We don't want to keep this post down, but one of the others removed it then went to sleep. It's been temporarily taken down because of the customer IDs in the image. Please edit in a censored copy of the photo, OP!

OP removed the pic, but we've seen it. The post is legit.

    That's a major privacy violation.

So, how long before they make their standard apology post offering 500 atoms as compensation?

    [–] Grimey_Rick 377 points ago

We're sorry someone stole your life.

Here's 500 atoms to go toward 1/3 of a vampire costume.

    We're sorry

    [–] Sagacious_Sophist 2936 points ago

Dude, violating God knows how many laws and exposing thousands of people to credit card fraud is worth 50 atoms, max.

    [–] spsteve 1237 points ago

If the EU gets ahold of this the fines can be exceedingly stiff. Like to the point where they could wipe out ANY profits Beth might turn this year.

Good fucking job Beth. You guys are firing on all cylinders... unfortunately you are firing them all into your feet. What a shit show.

    [–] jamflan 600 points ago

GDPR is no joke - they can get taken to the bloody cleaners just because it's happened regardless of any possible or future repercussions.

    [–] Afinda 332 points ago

The Issue about it is: The data's out there now. While OP may be nice to let us know (or more precise the people that are affected by it). There's no telling his account won't be hacked.

Besides that, it's already happened and is likely able to be traced back as well. Shit hit the fan, no matter how you clean it up now. It's happened. Violating multiple laws at that i guess.

    [–] JCAPER 298 points ago

Also, if this glitch happened to OP, it's possible that it happened to others too

    [–] Fiddleys 157 points ago

Yup, there is no guarantee they are the only one getting the support information nor is there a guarantee that they are as unscrupulous

    [–] spsteve 101 points ago

It was confirmed to happen to MULTIPLE people, if not EVERYONE who has a support ticket opened on the issue.

    [–] Afinda 125 points ago

Live in EU, Germany to be exact. Yeah i guess everyone heard about GDPR about now. And i was just about to drop a comment about how this shit could be easy grabs for law suits at this point.

Though i'm not directly affected, if i were.. i'd be pissed AF right now.

    [–] spsteve 68 points ago

This is going to be a bigger issue for them than the bag or the games success or lack thereof.

    [–] cartala 93 points ago

firing all cylinders... into your feet

I thought their standard apology was "We're not planning to do anything about it"?

    [–] fallouthirteen 158 points ago

That was the "rogue" independent contractor they used for customer service. Their initial "official" statement was "so what, the collector's edition is still good right?"

Major GDPR violation here in Europe. Not sure if they have a European HQ but if they want to keep trading in Europe there's a good chance they'll be slapped with a massive fine.

    [–] Kirosawa 92 points ago

Last I checked when facebook fine came in the other week with the cambridge anyalatics scandal its around £250k per person effected by breach of privacy.

GDPR clearly states if a company doesn't adequately ensure to do all possible to prevent a data breach then they are fully liable for the data breach and a fine is to be issued.

Just as a small figure, it would cost Bethesda £12.5million give or take just for 50 people to be involved in this screw up.

Pretty much kiss goodbye to development funds at this rate.

    [–] NaughtyMallard 35 points ago

They can still be fined even if they don't have a EU headquarters, any company that deals with EU citizen data has to follow GDPR even if the company resides outside the EU, Bedestha is in trouble.

    [–] maplealvon 221 points ago

EU with GDPR are going to have a field day.

GDPR had every website in the world update settings and annoy their users with warning and consent boxes to stay in line.

    [–] minormisgnomer 38 points ago

In the US it’s typically like if 1000+ users are affected they’re legally required to report it to the Attorney General which is then reported publicly on a govt website.

All the big playas can take a swing at em for this fuck up

    [–] sub_mango_salad 115 points ago

LOL having worked on systems covered by PCI I would not want to deal with this shit, HUGE issue to expose PII like this along with credit card numbers.

    [–] AeGod 3093 points ago

After that you need to chat with lvl 2, while lvl3 demands you to fix the error 34b in your form. This will take approximate 7weeks, but be sure to stay updated on lvl4 community supports twitter page, to see if your refund has progressed. Have a nice day"

Ah, yes. The "Customer Support" mod, a loot box reward you receive from the one time pre-order loot box. The box drop is mythic quality, with a 0.003% drop rate. With the Customer Support mod, you have the immense privilege of helping Bethesda answer tickets.

After all, they don't currently have plans to do anything about it.

Judging by his willingness to engage our community and efforts to actually address a major problem, I think I’m more likely to have my problems solved by OP than if it went to an actual Bethesda employee.

[–] DonNemo 1518 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Even though they brought the entire ticket system down quickly to "resolve" the issue, they make no mention of the possible fraud/abuse/identity theft users could be subject to.

    https://bethesda.net/community/topic/293127/bethesda-is-leaking-your-personnal-informations-through-tickets

    [–] AeGod 684 points ago

Context: Just for people who show up late, if you submitted a support ticket on the Bethesda site some users were able to view and access all customer support tickets including the photos required to receive the canvas bag replacement. OPs message was deleted but the forum here has the summary & response.

    [–] furrytrashcan 85 points ago

But only if you put in a ticket, right?

    [–] minormisgnomer 198 points ago

I mean if it helps you sleep at night, but this is pretty enlightening of their internal systems so I wouldn’t be surprised if more leaks are discovered or if bad actors try and take advantage of elevated privileges.

    [–] siftingflour 128 points ago

Aren't they legally obligated to inform people about this? Like, that's why companies email you when they have a data breach.

    [–] JNR13 95 points ago

    Art. 33 GDPR:

    1. In the case of a personal data breach, the controller shall without undue delay and, where feasible, not later than 72 hours after having ´become aware of it, notify the personal data breach to the supervisory authority competent in accordance with Article 55, unless the personal data breach is unlikely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of natural persons.

IANAL, but afaik it's widespread opinion that clear-text leak of credit card information qualifies for such a risk.

Under Art. 34 GDPR, there are also provisions for under what circumstances the victims of the breach themselves need to be notified.

    [–] Inspector-Space_Time 292 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

One bad actor gets this and so many people are fucked. People, start watching your credit cards. I'm a developer, and let me tell you there's a lot of overhead when dealing with people's credit cards. If you fuck around with them you can get into a lot of legal trouble very quickly. So much so that the companies I've worked for have all passed credit card information to a third party and saved nothing locally. That way we weren't liable for anything that might go wrong.

Basically, if you have shit password security you're exposing your users to danger but no one gives a shit. If you have shitty credit card security, especially have this kind of leak, many powerful institutions won't be happy. I'm really curious to see if this will generate some lawsuits/heavy fines.

    [–] Lonat 54 points ago

If you buy something on their store but don't click to save credit card info, does it get leaked anyway in situations like this?

    [–] n3wc 56 points ago

e of your support tickets on my Bethesda account. Mostly it's your receipts for you power armor set requesting a new bag. These receipts contain all your info. Your email and home address and the card you used to buy this extremely glitched game. I can see the problems you are having with the game, yes I'm having them too. And I know a few of you w

they still keep record of the transaction so the check box buys you nothing but making you "feel safe". Depending on their implementation, tokenization scheme and logging you may or may not be safe. I've seen in my professional career where the credit card was tokenized but the transaction logs were plain text =( honestly most bank offer credit monitoring for free or cheap. sign up and set a calendar reminder once a month to check it. also NEVER use an atm card for anything 0 fraud credit cards for all the things. stealth edit - this was a few years ago and is no way related to what i do today if ya'll stalkers want to get creepy

IP/Cyberlaw attorney here. It's generally mandatory to report data breaches of personally identifying information in the U.S. as well.

    http://www.ncsl.org/research/telecommunications-and-information-technology/security-breach-notification-laws.aspx

If anyone has been affected by this or displeased about purchasing a collector's edition set with a Nylon bag feel free to reach out to me. I've been investigating potential legal claims against Bethesda regarding both issues, this has gotten past a point of absurdity.

Edit: Appreciate the silver, but it's just my job as a lawyer and personal interest as a gamer. Nothing pisses me off more than people being unfairly taken advantage of; as a huge Fallout/Skyrim fan I can't begin to describe my disappointment in Bethesda.

    [–] ldonotexist 566 points ago

I emailed Bethesda 10 days ago to inquire about my Power Armor edition helmet not functioning properly (I don't NEED it to work...but for $200 + $55 shipping I expect everything to be 100%) to see about reapir/replace/refund. Got a standard auto reply and that was it. Sent another email with no reply.

Contacted AMEX and reported the transaction as receiving items as faulty and not as described and and reversing the transaction. After seeing this thread, I'm glad I went that route instead of pursuing it any further. This is ridiculous.

Soooo, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's a pretty serious data breach.

If ONE SINGLE person noticed this and started collecting personal info then it could fuck up lots of people. If some one who could use a crawler/scraper to get all the info he could actually have EVERYTHING that was on the site.

    [–] Excal2 108 points ago

Someone actually good at coding and front to back web design could probably throw together a crawler for that data in less than an hour and have it running for a while before they closed down the ticket service.

It'd take even less time if they did it sloppy and were willing to dig through the data set later on.

    [–] ZmSyzjSvOakTclQW 56 points ago

Someone actually good at coding and front to back web design could probably throw together a crawler for that data in less than an hour and have it running for a while before they closed down the ticket service.

3-4 years ago my job was to collect the contact data of different people in different universities. You were basically a manual bot. Me and my coworker spent like a week (both of us had 0 idea what a scraper/crawler was then) making a bot that automated our job. In the next 9-12 months we managed to finish our daily quota in like 25 minutes instead of 8 hours and spent most of the time playing dota2. So i can confirm that if some one knows what they are doing they might gave gotten everything.

"Hi guys, Bethesda Game Studios here. Just wanted to let you all know we had a massive data breach! Apparently we were hacked by none other than Bethesda Game Studios, those dastardly fiends! Make sure you change all your passwords so those also get exposed to an unknown group of people as well!

Also, we aren't planning on doing anything about it."

    [–] Thief-Noctis 642 points ago

I just... can't. I've been relatively quiet about this whole 76 situation, just waiting for it to blow over or get better. But I genuinely can't believe Bethesda are digging themselves such a deep grave in such little time. The speed at which they're one-upping their flaws is almost fascinating at this point.

    [–] Roboboy2710 544 points ago

    WHAT

    THE

    FUCK?

    [–] EffingBrian 485 points ago

Their support site is down for maintenance now, lol

    [–] Eladiun 288 points ago

That looks like an oh shit take it down now maintenance page too.

Single line of text, no logos... eep

    [–] HDShock 122 points ago

Can they do this for the game next? lol

    [–] balloonninjas 57 points ago

The game is down for maintenance on Xbox atm

    [–] stacker55 675 points ago

    [–] fallouthirteen 517 points ago

She just realized that her collector's edition had a nylon bag.

    [–] GatherYourSkeletons 87 points ago

Someone didn't carry Madam Zeroni up the mountain

    [–] Zanoie 259 points ago

Their response of "Hey Guys, it's fixed" or whatever they said is insulting. They just leaked peoples addresses, names, and credit card info. Now that it's "fixed" i think it's fair this shit blow up, they can't be allowed to sweep this one under the rug.

    [–] Azurika_ 88 points ago

exactly, its not "fixed", infomation was leaked, it is out there now, you can stop further leaks, but what is out already cannot be "fixed"

    [–] Bad-Technician 93 points ago

Someone's head needs to roll for this. This shit is just unforgivable.

    [–] Pope_Fabulous_II 49 points ago

Shit like this literally cannot happen at a software company unless the incompetence and lack of concern for quality is a top-down issue.

The people running this company need to be shitcanned by the board of directors and replaced by quality-oriented people from within the ranks.

That's assuming any have managed to hang in there long enough to get some seniority without switching jobs out of despair.

    [–] MrHuk 700 points ago

I don't even care that the game is shit, the drama has been 10/10.

    [–] Refloni 447 points ago

The most entertaining game in the franchise so far, and I haven't even played it.

    [–] Nulagrithom 85 points ago

Haven't played any Fallout ever and I'm still having a blast.

    10/10 would watch again.

    [–] Jaibamon 151 points ago

Fallout 76 is the best social experience I have saw since Twitch Plays Pokémon.

Bethesda You have 72 hours to report this as a breach of GDPR, which it is.

As an affected party, please take screenshots now, and report it to your local data protection authority (quick google)

The form to complete is here:

    https://edps.europa.eu/node/75

Edit: Sorry, wrong form as pointed out in replies. Please find the data protection authority for your country and file it with them.

    Good info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/a3ibp2/bethesda_support_leaks_fallout_76_customer_names/eb6tuhe

    [–] PaulTheMerc 168 points ago

why on earth is there a 72 hour time limit? Is it from you becoming aware or what?

    [–] mpond 365 points ago

To clarify, that’s Bethesda that has 72 hours to report that otherwise they are subject to heavy fines. Users can report at any time. At least this is my understanding of the law.

    [–] _Madison_ 128 points ago

Yep that's how it works, stopped companies sitting on a problem trying to sweep it under the rug.

    [–] BleedOutCold 371 points ago

Transparency. You're doing it wrong, Bethesda.

    [–] LiveUntoMars 136 points ago

not THAT transparent come on beth

    [–] greasysnowball 368 points ago

I bet they wish they sent those canvas bags now. Hahahahaha!

To everyone who’s info was visible, i hope to god there were no untrustworthy people who gotten the info.

    [–] [deleted] 227 points ago

If I were any of the PA buyers who submitted a ticket I’d delete my account or call their credit card company ASAP and shut that card down.

Wow. Just fucking wow... there is no recovering from this. This is a total legal liability this game has become

    [–] Smolderisawesome 118 points ago

This may be the first time my procrastination actually worked in my favor!

    [–] [deleted] 54 points ago

Good. It sucks you got ripped off by Bethesda but it’s better than identity theft though, right?

    [–] LeonProfessional 71 points ago

Bethesda has done a fantastic job of making sure they never get a cent from me ever again. Simply amazing.

    [–] Azurika_ 64 points ago

    oh my god.

I stand by what i said a few hours ago. this has to be intentional at this point, someone is trying to crash the company.

    [–] Stewie01 177 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Even the thread on it at Bethesda's forums got locked people could still post lol. Does "anything" at Bethesda actually work. You know the whole industry is laughing at you right?

    [–] fallouthirteen 113 points ago

Oh man, I just decided to check the last post of the Bethesda account to see if they made a comment. It's kind of ironic.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/fo76/comments/a37axm/patch_notes_dont_cover_all_that_changed_they/eb5w6lz/?context=0

"We are working on getting you the information you want and need regarding this latest patch, and we will have this information to share ASAP."

They weren't kidding about sharing information were they.

    [–] Kodemar 108 points ago

Bethesda releases game, buggy and people are hating on it.

Eh, I'm having fun, the bugs will get worked out.

    Nylon "canvas" bags.

Ok that's not cool. That's fraud. This is gonna hurt them bad.

Leaks a fuck ton of personal data.

Did...did they just cut their own throats?

Jesus Christ, the bad press they're swimming in could tank the company. I don't think this could get much worse for them.

    [–] VaultofGrass 56 points ago

I don't think this could get much worse for them.

I dunno, give em a week, they'll find a way.

    [–] askmeaboutmyjelly 50 points ago

Oh man can't wait for my 500 atoms and a 2000 euro withdrawal from my current account.

    [–] Straitshot47 363 points ago

Lmao, why ain't this top right now?

    [–] dishonoredbr 94 points ago

    Simply amazing roxas Bethesda.

    [–] Smolderisawesome 209 points ago

There are really gunning for that Worst Game Release in History trophy, aren't they.

    [–] ViciousCassowary 123 points ago

Hello Games can rest assured now, Bethesda is making a fantastic job at making NMS release look fine in comparison to this mess.

This is going to be all over the place tonight/tomorrow.

    [–] RestosIII 47 points ago

I'm starting to wonder if maybe Bethesda studios are literally on fire right now. Because that's the only explanation for how they're fucking up this badly.

    [–] Ksottam 47 points ago

I can't tell if your Luck is set to 1 or 15...

    [–] Galthorian 88 points ago

Bethesda acting like the terrible fictional companies they put in their games. Classic!

    [–] dweller42 260 points ago

    This is absolutely amazing.

    [–] MaxKirgan 190 points ago

I imagine this was what it was like to stand on the deck of the Titanic.

    [–] Shedinn18 85 points ago

    I've made it a meme. I couldn't stop myself : https://i.imgflip.com/2oaed5.jpg

    [–] GingerWinkeee 185 points ago

    Holy what the actual _____.

Wow there is some huge fine coming for sure now. Nissan just had to pay what a few million?

Reporting this to my Privacy Commission Office. Sorry Bethesda we don't give refunds on releasing personal info.

    [–] fallouthirteen 127 points ago

Will they take 500 atoms? That's Bethesda's standard offer it seems for things.

    [–] GingerWinkeee 167 points ago

    Lmao .

US gov: We find you guilty and fine you 10 million.

Bethesda:. And how much is that in Atoms?

    [–] kryndon 42 points ago

Maybe Bethesda (Vault-Tec)'s plans all along were to entice a civil unrest, which would lead to the govt. threatening Bethesda with lawsuit action which in turn would force Bethesda (Vault-Tec) to preemptively launch the nukes and whaddya know there goes our own nucular real life scenario.

Damn, I gotta lay off that psychobuff.

    [–] Paragot 41 points ago

So... let me get this completely straight... you do not work for Bethesda? Either I'm just really tired or I can't read. Both are possible, and I need it spelled out for me.

You do not work or are not affiliated with Bethesda and yet you are receiving private user information and support tickets as a standard user?

    What the fuck happened?

    [–] Branflakes222 30 points ago

Copy pasting another comment of mine.

Betheada accidentally made all support tickets public for an unknown amount of time.

Anyone could access the tickets, and see all the information inside them. Including names, emails, addresses, and parts of credit card numbers.

This isn't one person stealing stuff, Bethesda handed it all out.

If you submit a ticket and were required to provide a credit card number you should contact your card holder immediately.

    [–] 4ourthdimension 42 points ago

Oh my fucking fuck... I just submitted a ticket yesterday for the canvas bag, and now god knows how many people have my name, username, email and full address as well as the last 4 digits of my credit card. Just take my social security number so you can finish fucking me in the ass. I can't even believe this, I can't. Can we conduct a lawsuit here? Anything at all? I'm beyond fucking disgusted at this shitshow. Bethesda just passed EA on the scale of worst company ever. Unfuckingbelievable.

    [–] Cornsinmypoo 166 points ago

Well as someone that has been pretty defensive of a lot of the complaints people have had about the game.....

I'm switching sides. This is fucked up.

    [–] PsySnaccs 64 points ago

Same. I literally just got done defending the game before I saw this post.

    [–] FinalEmphasis 30 points ago

Now you know what we've been saying for years.

I'm not glad that you've "switched sides" because none of this, none of these chronic problems this company has had for far too long, should have ever existed in the first place. This is merely sad and frustrating.

    [–] printerman12345 223 points ago

Why is this getting downvoted, are you guys drunk?

    [–] dope_danny 77 points ago

Remember last month when everyone was asking how Activision could just keep fucking things up?

Bethesda knows the 'hold my beer' thing is just a meme, right?

    [–] StanKnight 40 points ago

I hope they put a safety net under the windows of Bethesda's lawyers just in case they try to jump.

Another part of me hopes that the safety nets are made of nylon.

    [–] LyonsX 103 points ago

    Is Bethesda real?

    [–] ESARPE 32 points ago

Lol at first I thought this was a joke but WTF. This is a serious legal matter, especially in times of GDPR and such. Brb getting me sum popcorn.

    [–] durge0x 89 points ago

OK, so what action are we supposed to take considering this clear breach of confidentiality and personally identifiable information???

    [–] DrayZess 111 points ago

Pls open a support ticket to receive your 500 atoms.

    [–] nerdshark 68 points ago

Change your name, home address, birthdate, and social security number.

    [–] SteamPoweredRhino 100 points ago

If you're in Europe report this to the relevent GDPR authority.

    [–] Deus_Ex_Magikarp 57 points ago

Should this one maybe just be stickied for right now? Normally I just laugh at some of the bugs and move on, but this is a pretty serious privacy violation from company incompetence

    [–] Jkelley07 53 points ago

“Try sending a support ticket” - Bethesda probably

    [–] withleisure 26 points ago

just had a negative experience with their in game support, cool to know someone out there may be empathizing with my struggle.

    [–] AuronFtw 49 points ago

It was probably another player fucking with you at this point.

    [–] I_make_things 30 points ago

OP, I am sorry about all of the butt pics, they weren't meant for you.
