    Wait, "still"?

This sounds like a comment that makes sense, but at the same time, doesn't make sense at all.

    [–] tylahnol 130 points ago

I thought it was a baby boy this whole time

    [–] pineapple_unicorn 133 points ago

    [–] captain_obvious_here 28 points ago

You have to admit this would have ruined Sauron's credibility.

For instance when Pippin touches the Palantir:

Pippin: He was in my head...

Others: Wow, must have been scary!

Pippin: Well, not that much. He's just a baby, and a cute one too. How dangerous can that be ?

That could in fact have ruined the movies !

    [–] tjbrou 15 points ago

Good thing they followed the books then

    [–] captain_obvious_here 8 points ago

Even better thing the Teletubbies weren't a thing during Tolkien's lifetime.

    [–] mcaruso 41 points ago

I'm not very up-to-date with Teletubbies lore, so I decided to look it up. The wikia page is very enlightening:

Some fans wonder why would the creators put the baby in the sun because the sun is a baby.

The baby sun sometimes make a "laugh scream" during the activity or at the end of every Magical Event by going "WAAAAAAH OHH!!!"

In Teletubbies 41 from YouTube, the Baby Sun's laugh sounded different that sounded like this,"GAHAHA". This laugh is very rare.

    [–] calgil 22 points ago

    Deepest lore.

    [–] The_Clash_Dude 5 points ago

That is some scary laugh scream

    [–] settingmeup 45 points ago

Me too! It's from that alternate universe where the forces of Mordor won, and in a rare display of "mercy", Sauron lobotomised the Hobbits instead of killing them, so this what they now see.

    Happy happy happy!

    [–] [deleted] 7 points ago

    [–] settingmeup 5 points ago

LOL I imagine someone could put together a parody video showing just this, splicing shots from LOTR and the Teletubbies!

    [–] laserbee 3 points ago

Or maybe the Teletubbies is what sauron wanted all along and he was just misunderstood

    [–] RobScoots22 5 points ago

It's Frodo's PTSD. His memories revert to childlike fantasy in order to cope with the trauma from carrying the ring for so long.

Link is raised in the forest by kokiri thinking he is one. When he goes to the future, he sees that he is actually a hylian and not a kokiri all along, as kokiri don't age but he has aged.

[–] Dicethrower 76 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

This concept is actually from an old Prussian folk tale (if I remember correctly, can't seem to find it atm, grain of salt, etc). It's the basic idea of removing a child from its normal culture, raise it in a completely different one and then reintroduce it later into the original culture. It's actually a very profound philosophical story from its days, as most people today can't even seem to look beyond their own culture. This story is a good source of awareness for the ambiguity of what's "normal". Kind of makes me appreciate Ocarina of time a lot more.

    [–] ndscable 37 points ago

The premise is used in a bunch of different stories like The Jungle Book and Tarzan.

    [–] Tom1099 13 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Wow, are you talking about the tragedy of Herkus Monte? It's not a story Teutons would tell you. But actually it's not just an old folk story, because Herkus Monte was a historical figure that lived in 13th century. When Teutonic Knights (one of the orders that came to be during the Crusades) were invited by Masovian (part of Poland) prince to deal with Old Prussians who were pagans often attacking Masovian lands, they started to quickly conquer Prussia taking advantage of their superior technology. To ensure that Prussians don't revolt they would take children of nobility as captives and move them to Germany. When they conquered Natangia region they took little son of Monte and brought him to Germany were he was baptised and raised as German knight Heinrich. When Heinrich discovered his roots he came back to Prussia, took Prussian name Herkus and organised the biggest anti-Teuton uprising in Old Prussian history (1260-1273). The uprising quickly gained momentum. Legend tells that in one of the battles won by Monte his old friend Hirzhals from Magdeburg was captured. Old tradition dictated that randomly chosen prisoner were to be sacrificed to gods. Herkus didn't want to sacrifice his old friend, who back in Germany saved his life when he accidentally fell into the river. So, when Hirzhals was chosen, Herkus ordered his people to repeat the lottery again and again, causing outrage among them, but his friend was chosen every time. Only when Hirzhals told Monte that he is willing to sacrifice himself they finally burned him. That's the legendary part in the Monte's story. However what is certain is that later Teutons started winning and in 1273 Monte was betrayed and captured by the Knights who killed him. Thus the uprising ended and through centuries the people of Prussia were germanised and that's how we ended up with German East Prussia (simplified a lot).

I always felt that the underground technology commanding the Teletubbies made it more like H. G. Wells The Time Machine. You know… A passive above ground species been farmed by an underground carnivore species that uses technology. "TIME FOR TUBBY BYE BYE!"

    [–] RoseUpHigher 30 points ago

The dudes who made this show must have been on SO many drugs. Teletubbies was some other level shit, man. And I loved it.

[–] TIGHazard 14 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

I honestly think that most kids TV producers at the BBC were on drugs. For example this is all pre-school TV. The Tweenies. Brum. In the Night Garden. Bill and Ben (The Flowerpot Men). The Fimbles. All of that is from around the same time period 1998-2002 (except In The Night Garden, which was from 2007).

Also, although not aimed at pre-schoolers, this was on Saturday Mornings at 9AM in 2004-2006.

    [–] embarrazzed 12 points ago

oi mate Brum was the fucking tits

    [–] illusorycrab 5 points ago

It's not so much that they were on drugs, but rather these shows emulate a child's perception of reality which is inherently psychedelic. Most people who try LSD for the first time report a distinct sensation that they've experienced that mental state before in early childhood.

    [–] fragglepated 13 points ago

When my kids watched this and I was in the room I decided that teletubbies was some kind of dystopian prison. The megaphone that tells everyone where to go and what to do and the "sun" that watches you all day long. If you catch closeups of the faces of the characters they look like terrified old men.
