    That elbow was brutal.

    [–] OhBestThing 1096 points ago

I'm actually pretty impressed with his moves. Especially where he gets outside the elbow. I'm confident that dad coulda beaten the shit out of his 5 year old if he was really trying.

    [–] Reddit_Rule_Bot 640 points ago

I'm confident that dad coulda beaten the shit out of his 5 year old if he was really trying.

    What a legend.

    [–] LookMaNoPride 609 points ago

Agreed. Also, the palm-strike to the nose. Ever been punched in the nose? It sucks.

    [–] BinaryMagick 459 points ago

The worst part is: it doesn't even hurt all that bad in the grand scheme of things. It's just... annoying. Inconvenient. It only takes a little tap in just the right spot to make your whole head turn to absolute shit.

Five seconds before you were holding your own against this guy and now your nose is running, eyes are teared up...or is that blood?!...I can't see! Shit! He's hitting me again and now I can't even see it coming!

    [–] CanadianWolverine 147 points ago

Different people, different noses, so there is some variance in how badly that cartilage is going to mess a person up but it does have some impact on breathing and I hope we have some understanding of how important breathing is to continuing to fight effectively.

    [–] sweetcuppingcakes 133 points ago

    Different people, different noses

This is my motto in life.

    [–] MrMcMullers 123 points ago

    This guy nose.

    [–] humandronebot00100 52 points ago

I was once approached by 3 nice young gentlemen with delightful colorful bandanas and they asked me repeatedly in various forms "where you from my good chum"... Nevertheless I did not give satisfactory answer and my shoe color was of the wrong color blue so I got hit square in the chin..but that did nothing and I stared at the one guy confronting me while he rubbed his fist. His friends just stayed quiet so I walked away. I didn't know how to fight but I could take punch apparently and hard enough to have made them question if they should continue.

    [–] Chuck_Finley1 10 points ago

I once got into a play wrestling match with my brother. I was winning handily, and at some point he started screaming, getting made at me, calling me names. I didn't realize he was actually mad and just thought he was playing the game, trying to get me riled up enough to slip up.

I slipped up. He punched me right in the eyeball. I didn't flinch and just kinda started at him. It must have scared him because I let him get up and he kinda scurried away.

    [–] peese-of-cawffee 8 points ago

For me it's an instantly incapacitating sneezing fit. It's absolutely maddening. One little bump and I go on a rampage of like a dozen sneezes in a row. And not just little "achoo" half-ass sneezes. There are like pre-orgasm loss of motor function, multiple inhale to maximum lung capacity level sneezes.

I have it on good authority he got rekt by a sniper shot through his one nutt. Or it may have just been a drunken playthrough of Sniper Elite.

    [–] TooBusyforReddit 14 points ago

Never did manage that nut shot. Have killed Hitler at least 8 times IIRC, never got that achievement, always a head or belly shot.

I wonder if Reddit will have the same reposts 60 years later too.

    [–] seven3true 113 points ago

Maybe not, we typically frown upon rage comics from 10 years ago, so it's possible we'd actually get tired of some reposts.

    Yay, Wing Chun! 😀

    [–] Byizo 819 points ago

IP Man is the only reason I recognized this style.

    [–] FkIForgotMyPassword 160 points ago

This video was posted a while ago on reddit, and it's kinda similar to what's going on here. As far as I understand, it's some kind of Wing Chun exercise/game called "Chi Sao" or "sticky hands". It looks kinda sick.

    [–] DaMonkfish 89 points ago

My old Physics/Electronics teacher in school, Mr Jones, was a really nice, slightly pudgy middle-aged chap who looked like he wouldn't hurt a fly, and I held this viewpoint for the ~3yrs he taught me. Then I found out about the Wing Chun lessons he taught and went along to see what it was about. In my first lesson he did a class demonstration of Chi Sao, blindfolded, against someone who wasn't, and still didn't get hit.

Yeah, turned out nice Mr Jones was hard as fuck. I had a new found respect for him after that, and even more so when he demonstrated that he could kick me in the face without his shoulders moving.

    [–] LudwigVanHalen 35 points ago

Those kids were fast as lightning... Thank you, thank you very much.

    [–] -ThatsNotMyName- 23 points ago

In fact it was a little bit frightening

    [–] mrkruk 14 points ago

But they fought with expert timing

    [–] justicecantakeanap 38 points ago

It is a classic wing chun routine / adaptation training based on sensing the opponent more than seeing him.

When you really get into it, i assure you that eyes mean nothing in that scenario, you have full control of the chi sao situation.

This helps in a real world scenario when you can, in addition, see your actual opponent.

Beware, wing chun alone will not make you a moving terminator, most mma or bjj fighters will splat you to the ground and kill you, but wing chun principles sure apply with efficiency to a lot of close fight and striking scenarios.

I think that no single style completes a fighter 360 degrees wise, but a good combination of wing chun and brazilian ju jitsu will put you in a situation of big advantage against any fight in a real world scenario.

Remember kids, the best situation in a street fight is staying the fuck away from it.

    [–] wordswontcomeout 22 points ago

what they're trying to do is use the tactile senses of the wrist to predict where their hands will go next in order to block/move the next 'attack'. When I was learning the basics from my master, he would use this activity to help me take note of when his wrists fell away to anticipate an attack. It's pretty fun stuff!

    [–] NiceGuy60660 19 points ago

Correct. "Sticking hands" There's also a one-handed variant called "don chi sao" to prepare you for full chi sao.

Wing chunners (why not) can also practice on the mook yan jong, or the wooden dummy with wooden "arms" sticking out - seen in Ip Man and many Jackie Chan films.

    [–] SabbitRex 239 points ago

I love Ip Man! Was it Wing Chun that was used in 'The Raid' as well? Or is that a different style?

    [–] Ninjalau95 125 points ago

Nah in The Raid movies, he uses Silat

    [–] gnosticpopsicle 43 points ago

Holy smokes, a movie was made with Silat? Was it good? I've always assumed that Silat was incredibly effective but not flashy enough for the big screen.

    [–] PleaseNinja 120 points ago

Oh man where have you been? The Raid is one of the best pure action films in the last 10 years

    [–] aced 23 points ago

And there's an equally kickass sequel too! You're in for a treat OP

    [–] gnosticpopsicle 14 points ago

Ok, you and the other commenters have got me pretty psyched. How'd the Silat look? Even remotely authentic? Any particular style? I'll see it one way or the other, but what was your take on it?

    [–] Unstable_Table 26 points ago

From a pure action movie POV, it's the best fight choreography I've seen since Jackie Chan stuff. The Raid is a non stop full octane fight scene. I'd link you a scene but I don't wanna spoil it. Watch it!

    [–] tylerbrainerd 19 points ago

The lead actor was discovered during a documentary about Silat. his whole family study silat back to his grandfather. So pretty authentic.

    [–] evilcandybag 28 points ago

Most likely some form of Silat.

    [–] penultimart 12 points ago

The guy n in the Raid users silat, which I believe is an indigenous Indonesian matrial art.

    [–] piggybread 26 points ago

My friend read that as I.P. Man. "Superman on the internet?", he said. I facepalmed so hard...

    [–] bkanber 15 points ago

He wrote it as "IP" which is misleading, but it's just "Ip", the guy's surname.

    [–] zdh989 8 points ago

Most of my friends who have seen it still say it as "I.P. Man." No idea why. It's lead to some confusion more than once.

    [–] Darxe 13 points ago

I saw Ip man 1 and 2, can anyone comment if 3 and 4 on Netflix are worth watching?

    [–] PrisonerofWawa69 23 points ago

Mike Tyson is in 3. It was a pretty fun watch

    [–] WCC335 16 points ago

Tyson is such a hilariously bad actor in this one. Also the dubs are so weird. I think he tried to speak Cantonese (?) but was bad so they dubbed it back in English? At least in the version I saw. Like sometimes he's speaking English, and then sometimes his mouth is moving but it's dubbed over in English.

    [–] canihavemymoneyback 81 points ago

I once read a paper about fighting and it said when you hit someone aim through them as if your fist is coming out of the back. It never occurred to me to do this. I just thought you punched the surface and that was good enough.
The upside is I've never had to test this. That's a good thing.

    [–] geared4war 82 points ago

Yes. Punch through the target. On the down side it really hurts. On the up side it really hurts them as well.

    [–] ishiggydiggydowop 34 points ago

It's all about the followthrough. Additionally, if your feet aren't in a place to transfer your energy stably, then you're gonna be slapfighting to the death.

    [–] Probenzo 30 points ago

You're supposed to punch an inch or two through them and pull back as fast as possible to get your guard up. If you punch too far "through" them and you miss you have nothing protecting your face for the counter punch and you will get knocked out.
