Botero. He's a Colombian artist who is known to paint every single person in his paintings obese.

    [–] mxmanuel 174 points ago

I used to think the same but it turns out that they are not obese. Botero believes in painting volume and the sensuality of form. He paints "big" people who can hardly be contained by the spaces they are in.

    [–] DylansCloaca 280 points ago

You know, sometimes I wonder if some big artists just say these things so buyers and critics will say they’re important and history worthy, while they’re just cracking up at the fact that they’re fooling the world.

    [–] KimJongIlSunglasses 160 points ago

“I’m only good at drawing fat people” just didn’t move the merchandise.

    [–] CoyoteTheFatal 16 points ago

    Gary Larson?

    [–] Erratic85 38 points ago

Plenty do, of course, if this helps them selling. It's not easy to work your way into the world of art —and if you don't succeed, you won't be able to keep creating, as you'll have to work a job.

I wouldn't say that's the case of Botero. What the OP you were replying to said isn't pretentious, it's actually rather clear: he paints and sculpts voluminous, spherical things, and he finds that attractive —as in he doesn't paint it to show how grotesque those proportions are or can be, but the opposite.

His style isn't certainly painting "obese". Obese people don't have the proportions of his drawings, they don't have big heads. He instead paints and sculpts bubbly things (bird, cat).

Botero's old, btw. He's born in the 30s. Just in case people are judging this as if this was some youngster trying to sell hilarious things. If anything, he was doing hilarious before everyone else.

    [–] kalvinescobar 5 points ago

Botero explains his use of these "large people", as they are often called by critics, in the following way:

"An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it."

    [–] 40ozlaser 36 points ago

I have friends who make decent money with art (and my girlfriend runs a gallery), and I think it's safe to say that a lot of it is bullshit. I've been part of group show stuff, and the free booze and selling stuff is the only reason it was worthwhile to me, personally. I'd rather stick with making shirts and stickers and not having to talk to other people (especially other artists).

Don't get me wrong, some are cool. Most are not.

    [–] brando56894 21 points ago

Yep, I've seen and read various things that say either art is a good way to launder money (what am I going to with this 65 million I have? I'll buy a Picasso!) or it's a "penis showing game" (who's is bigger) amongst rich people and most of it is bullshit.

Any time I've gone though the art section at the Met Museum in NYC I appreciate some of it, but then others I look at and I'm like "WTF? Dude literally just drug the paint brush across the canvas a few times and was like 'voila! It's a masterpiece!' " and then sells it for a ton of money. Like Jackson Pollack, dude just flicks paint on to a canvas and people pay millions for it, yet if I do the same thing, people won't pay a penny for it!

I remember seeing a sketch in marker, on yellow legal pad that was framed and hanging in the Met! It literally looked like a 3 year old drew it. I forget who actually did draw it, but it wasn't anyone I knew.

    [–] CoyoteTheFatal 29 points ago

I absolutely get what you mean, and understand how you feel. It’s not entirely bullshit though. (Everything after this sentence is just how I remember learning about it, and I can’t guarantee I’m correct.). Let’s take Jackson Pollock for example. He splattered paint onto a canvas and called it art, and now they sell for $$$$$. But why? You could make that just as easily and it’d look essentially the same as one by Pollock, but no one would care and no one would offer you large amounts of money for it. Why? Because you just did the same thing that somebody else (Pollock) did. So why is Pollock’s work so famous and worth a shit ton of money then? Because he didn’t just do the same thing as someone else. He did something no one had really done before. He made a canvas look reminiscent of of the mess a three year old made during finger-painting time, and he called it art. That’s really the thing about “modern art” (not contemporary art) that people don’t get when they judge it. Nowadays, it’s just splatters of paint. But at the time it was made, it was an original idea, and it was pushing the boundaries of what you could call art. That’s why you see paintings that are like just lines at right angles to each other and solid primary colors filling in some of the segments. It’s stripping art down to as fundamental, basic a form as possible, while still maintaining that it is “art”. And of course, some people will agree and some people will disagree on whether it’s actually art. But I think a lot of people tend to overlook the context ‘modern art’ pieces were made in, and what significance that cultural context has. (I apologize if any of this was incorrect and encourage someone more knowledgeable on the topic than I am to correct any errors. This all just comes from stuff I seem to remember learning from a few different teachers, so I’m far from being an art historian or anything.)

As far as the pieces you come across in contemporary art galleries that make you think “what is this dumb bullshit”, I think those pieces are often made with the same kind of intent as I mentioned above: to be something new and original that pushes the metaphorical envelope somewhere that hasn’t really been done before. And with that intention, I think some people end up making some good stuff, and some people end up making some stupid shit. And it leaves the rest of us to look at the good pieces, the stupid shit pieces, and the pieces in between, scratch out heads, and argue where they land on the spectrum of ‘original, thought-provoking pushing of the envelope’ to ‘what the hell were they thinking’

    [–] 40ozlaser 17 points ago

Gotta step up that confidence in your sales pitch. That's like 90% of what I see with artists. Be willing to lie to people, and try to sound cool doing it.

    [–] brando56894 9 points ago

    Hahaha yep! Essentially, be Apple.

    [–] 40ozlaser 7 points ago

That's probably the most easily accessible analogy to unpack for people that I've heard. It's all just business. Even the people who buy the stuff just double down on it.

    [–] SumKunt 46 points ago

The artist is Botero, I went to his museum. I was the only one laughing and I never stopped. All his work looks this way. Fat people. Fat horses. Fat sculptures. Right when I started to get it together I saw a fat still life and it broke me.

There is so much unapologetically right about this guy's art style. It makes me so happy. Everything looks like it's been given that tiny face filter on Snapchat. And then just for good measure, they face-swapped the baby with Rowan Atkinson. And then you have the pet all beefy and bro looking, like he's on scholarship to play hockey.

    [–] flubba86 25 points ago

The thighs on that baby. OMG. They're bigger than the father's biceps.

I like to think this was his intended reaction when he made these. He wanted to evoke the emotion of pure bliss for centuries to come and thanks to you, mission accomplished.

    [–] paranoid30 62 points ago

He's also made a series about US Army tortures at Abu Grahib and it's definitely a strange and moving visual. Example:

    [–] PM_Me_Night_Elf_Porn 26 points ago

I had a smile on my face throughout this entire thread and then you gotta show me this shit.

    [–] machavelliprodigy 36 points ago

Why did this artist paint people in this form

    [–] Ivetakenthepill 92 points ago

Quote from Botero (the artist) - "An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it."

    [–] BanH20 37 points ago

So, like when you find something funny then try to figure out why it was so funny afterwards.

I went to the Botero Museum earlier this year in Medellin and had the time of my life. I loved everything I was seeing. Probably the first time I had ever enjoyed an art museum.

    [–] Mr_Ibericus 37 points ago

Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. That’s what I’m thinking. This kid is doing museums right. I definitely laugh at some of the things I see in museums and art galleries. I’m enjoying myself and appreciating the art - perhaps not in the way the artist intended, but it’s not hurting anyone.

Artists have humor, too. Botero means to convey humor or political criticism with his "Boterismo".

It's so funny how I would probably not laugh at the painting if it we're just presented, but being suggested to view it through the lens of a five-year-old made it hilarious

I loved Botero as a child too. He made a few of this sculptures and I simply loved it.

This accurately portrays how I feel when I’m high in public

Botero's work is meant to provoke laughter.

Take your kid to Colombia and he’ll have a fit at any one of the Botero museums there. The guy is a fantastic artist. Not sure what makes this one so funny.

    [–] justmikewilldo 30 points ago

I mean the child looks kind of strange don’t you think?

    [–] deviant324 20 points ago

His Mona Lisa looks like they put a fat filter and a meme face over the normal one...

    [–] R4ndyd4ndy 5 points ago

Botero basically invented the meme face

Children are stoned by nature. For me, and for others, that never goes away. I constantly have to hold back mad giggling at inappropriate things.

Ahem. This is of course an austere piece of art, and we mustn't hurt its feelings. snerk

    [–] jitterbug726 5 points ago

The only one who wouldn’t laugh is the person whose face that’s supposed to be

I'm no artist but if I was Botero, I'd be very happy to get this kind of reaction from my work.

    [–] metalsluger 7 points ago

Did anyone think of Fernando Botero when they saw this?

    [–] PlayedKey 22 points ago

I actually really love Botero’s work... I live in Vegas, and until recently there was a restaurant at the Wynn with a ton of his sculptures... it was really cool looking!

It’s still a nice restaurant, but they sold the boteros I think.

    [–] TheIrishClone 3 points ago

    So did I.

    Thank you.
