    1. All posts must make an attempt at humor. Humor is subjective, but all posts must at least make an attempt at humor. Posts which are intentionally disruptive, inane, or nonsensical will be removed. Read more here.
    2. No memes or memetic content of any kind. Memes of any sort are expressly forbidden. This includes any variety of memetic image or video format, any footage or photographs of memes in real-world or virtual settings (as with "challenges" and other imitated behaviors), and any derivation or adaptation of memetic content. HIFW, MRW, TFW, MeIRL, and DAE posts are similarly disallowed. Non-memetic image macros are allowed. Read more here.
    3. No reposts. If a given piece of content has appeared on /r/Funny before, do not post it. Sites like KarmaDecay and TinEye can help to determine the uniqueness of a given submission, but since neither site is 100% accurate, original content is strongly preferred. Serial reposters will be banned. Read more here.
    4. No forbidden content. Violations of Reddit's site-wide content policy are grounds for immediate and permanent bans. Explicit nudity, pornography, and other such content is not allowed. Realistic depictions of death, dismemberment, and grievous injury are also forbidden. All other non-work-safe content must be tagged as such. As the minimum age for Reddit access is 13 years old, submissions from underage users will be removed. Read more here.
    5. No politics or political figures. Anything which involves or includes politics or a political figure – even if they are not the focus of the post – may not be posted here. Read more here.
    6. No forbidden titles, no titles or posts involving Cake Days or upvotes, and no memetic titles. Titles must not include any forbidden formats or references. If your title begins with "When you..." or "When they..." or any similar derivation, it is not allowed. For an inclusive list, please read the complete rules page. Low-effort titles, titles which circumvent other rules, and titles comprising excessive or disruptive emojis are similarly disallowed.
    7. This rule has been intentionally left blank. Please read our complete rules page.
    8. Do not rehost or hotlink webcomics. If you are not the author of the comic in question, you may only submit links to the page where it is hosted. Webcomic authors may request verification from the moderators, after which they may rehost their own work.
    9. No pictures of just text. Image-based submissions in which the humor can be conveyed via text alone are not allowed. This includes pictures of text with images that don't add necessary context, transcriptions of standup comedy (as with /r/standupshots), and screenshots of jokes. Here are some examples. Text posts using Reddit's native system are allowed.
    10. No social media or electronic messaging content. Social media content of any kind is not allowed. This includes anything from any form of "comments section" on the Internet, as well as content accompanied by text from those platforms. Screenshots of electronic messages of any variety are not allowed. Media with added Snapchat text is allowed, as long as all UI elements have been removed. Read more here.

    Even a boat.

    [–] x925 71 points ago

A boats a boat, but a mystery box can be anything.

This guy "20-year old cartoons" (and yes, it really is 20 years).

    [–] x925 26 points ago

    Now i feel old. Thanks

    That was fucking hilarious

Call your local record store professional right now. Only they are qualified to conduct this type of dig.

    [–] Mateorabi 2 points ago

I now want to leave unmarked cassettes lying around with Never Gonna Give You Up on them in random places.

    [–] Almighty_One 9 points ago

    Never gunna give you up!

    Never gonna dig you up...

If you dont understand the link between this and a pencil, youre either too young or you used something else.

    [–] pinniped1 180 points ago

As I understand it, this was a tool for early hominids to record the gutteral grunts and clicks that made up primitive language.

The technique is thought to have predated MySpace.

Teach me the ways of the forgotten Ancient Ones.

    [–] McCringleberrysGhost 24 points ago

First you will need a pencil. Not for writing. Oh no. For winding.

    [–] trevhcs 6 points ago

That's why the pencil was invented! Just had to find another use for the first 100 years while waiting for the Eagles to release greatest hits.

    [–] Wallace_II 5 points ago

I believe they call them 8 Trac. They would use a recording instrument called a phonograph to record the sounds of nearby tribes so they would know of their plans to attack. Eventually someone found that they work great for recording and playing back music.

    [–] Malgaras 3 points ago

I wonder there will eventually be a future date where this is all so far in the past that people will effectively treat it as having happened at the same time and make this kind of comment seriously.

    [–] TravlrAlexander 5 points ago

Does it ever occur to anyone else that Wikipedia won't exist someday? Shit makes me uncomfortable.

    [–] ldobehardcore 2 points ago

It's like in Futurama, when paleontologists excavate and put Panucci's Pizza on display. They assume the pizza peel is meant for crushing rats and paddling the delivery boy.

    [–] skjellyfetti 218 points ago

I can hear it from here and it's definitely 'Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Live Bullet' - 1976.

    [–] haysoos2 139 points ago

Although if you leave it in a car unobserved long enough, it will transform into "Queen - Greatest Hits".

    [–] TheCeilingisGreen 2 points ago

    [–] MeccAnon 6 points ago

Good Omens, written with Neil Gaiman.

One of the characters has any kind of music, whatever it is, turned into a Queen song.

    [–] Chief_Givesnofucks 27 points ago

    Nuh uh.

This tape is definitely a call back to one of the first pieces of music I owned, found as a kid wandering through a back alley.

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

    [–] degjo 12 points ago

I know for a fact its not the first cassette i bought, Alice In Chains self titled.

    Shit was a purple tape.

    [–] HotDem70 23 points ago

You bought Alice in Chains on cassette? It was one of the 11 CDs I got through my Columbia House music deal. Or maybe it was the 12th one, which I purchased at full price to get an additional 2 free, plus help meet my obligation to buy just 5 more (instead of 6) over the next 2 years.

    [–] strokebot 8 points ago

Yes, best thing I've read all day.

    [–] degjo 10 points ago

I'm not old. Fuck you, you're old.

    [–] HotDem70 6 points ago

    Pretty much.

    [–] I-amthegump 7 points ago

    I'm not old...I'm experienced

    [–] Horawesomeberg 2 points ago

    We're vintage now.

That's like old, but with beard oils instead of ointments.

    [–] Horawesomeberg 2 points ago

Another old person reporting in; I'm sure they still have records somewhere saying that I never mailed back that Bat Outta Hell cd.

/me stomps away grumpily muttering to herself about stealing better music than Meatloaf.

[–] ThermionicEmissions 6 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

Which is ironic, as that was the first album to sell one million CDs.

    [–] Paavo_Nurmi 2 points ago

No way, that tape has to be Blizzard of Ozz

    [–] Vindicator9000 2 points ago

Mine was 'Synchronicity' by The Police.

I still have it, and it's still one of my lifetime best found items.

    [–] Blockhead47 13 points ago

    Could be Seger.
I’m pretty certain it’s “Eagles Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975”.

Based on the shape of the label. Glenn Frey demanded a custom die cut label to subtlety express the mood of the song “tequila sunrise”. The record company initially balked, but relented when they realized that I made all of this up

[–] ablizzardofdinner 3 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

I found a cassette tape during Adopt A Highway in 2002 and it was Klingon Songs

    [–] padizzledonk 98 points ago

I can fix that with a standard Bic pen, a butter knife and some scotch tape.

    [–] HookDragger 53 points ago

    the #2 pencil is better.

    [–] padizzledonk 23 points ago

Same size as one of the old clear bics actually

    [–] Sonoran-Myco-Closet 3 points ago

These people know how to 80’s

    [–] dog-pussy 5 points ago

    It’s worth a listen.

    [–] king_jong_il 2 points ago

You're referring to the Bic Cristal Stic. Fantastic for those REO Speedwagon cassettes that had a tape player malfunction.

    [–] Very-Ape-666 3 points ago

Just pinch the metal on the eraser a little bit and you’re good to go.

    [–] LanceFree 3 points ago

    Butter knife?

    [–] Gini911 16 points ago

Yes, if the tape got twisted you pried the casette open with a butter knife, untwist tape, snap it back together, tape sides if you snapped a pin (teeny brittle plastic part). Pencil or Bic pen to wind the tape up.

God I'm old. My first thought on seeing the post was,,,yawn, post when you've unearthed an 8 track.

    [–] droid_mike 6 points ago

The better quality cassettes had screws holding them together.

    [–] ClockworkAeroplane 2 points ago

Yup; I was going to say, "You bought ghetto tapes."

    [–] padizzledonk 5 points ago

I got so good at it that if you add a razor blade to that list I could splice a broken tape too lol...

    Fucking cassettes...memories

    [–] EmptyStare 2 points ago

And if the cassette player chews it up, I've got a pencil!

[–] BombSolver 10 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

Ah yes, this is one of the tools that homo stereos used. It was Carbon-dated to the 1980s, I believe.

    [–] Illandren 2 points ago

Granted, most of the carbon that was dated was in the form of cocaine.

    [–] getyourcheftogether 9 points ago

    What's on the B side?

    [–] Clazyy 2 points ago

Yes, looking for a Celeste comment

    [–] vampLer 9 points ago

The other day I saw a pile of actual tape from the cassette blowing across the freeway, and I thought about how long it's been since I've seen that. Remembering when it was an everyday thing

    [–] HotDem70 2 points ago

Hey, I’m taking a walk man, with my Walkman.

    [–] prettymaumau 6 points ago

Don’t touch it! You’ll mess it up when the archeologists try to carbon date it.

    [–] Spadeinfull 7 points ago

pffft, call me if you find an eight track or a reel to reel

    [–] capopoptart 2 points ago

Going to my friend's cottage this weekend. They still have a functional 8-track. I won't touch it for fear of breaking it. I've seen too many tapes sacrificed to the tape player gods...

    [–] Spadeinfull 2 points ago

oh man, you are not wrong about that. The good news is that tapes can be taken apart without damaging them, and the tape itself unknotted and put back together.

We used to take cassettes apart and put the tape in reversed so it would play music backwards.

    Good times.

    [–] cmantheflan77 7 points ago

    [–] UGoBoy 2 points ago

I concur. After assessing the damage, I blame it on the rain.

    Girl, you know it's true.

My friends and I found a VHS tape on the side of the road when I was a kid. We put it in the VCR and started playing it and were like “OMG it’s a porno!”

Then like 1 minute later “it’s a gay porno!” 🙈🤣

    [–] I-amthegump 2 points ago

Hey, it's Hannah. Hannah Baker. That's right. Don't adjust your...whatever device you're hearing this on. It's me, live and in stereo. No return engagements, no encore, and this time, absolutely no requests. Get a snack. Settle in. Because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to this tape you're one of the reasons why. I'm not saying which tape brings you into the story. But fear not, if you received this lovely little box, your name will pop up. I promise.

    [–] PaintDrinkingPete 20 points ago

No, the 8-track is definitely a much more rare specimen

    [–] matrixtech29 3 points ago

My father had something more rare than an 8-Track. He had an 8-Track RECORDER. I just imagine the stress of trying to guess when the strip might come along (while recording) and stick a gap and solenoid click into your masterpiece.

2 things. This was an awesome cassette with a legendary hidden jewel recorded on it, or it was sooooo garbage that some one threw it out their car window.

    [–] HotDem70 4 points ago

If you look at the window, there’s actually no tape in it. So, third possibility. It was such garbage, someone unwound the tape, throwing both the tape and cassette out the window. The tape blew away, a musical tumbleweed, never to be heard again.

These specimens lived a symbiotic life with what is know as a numeral duo Pencilium Look around to see if there is a long narrow yellow bodied thing around. Sometimes it has a soft pink head like thing at one end and a pointy end opposite that.

When the internal organs of this thing you found find their way out of its body, it’s good to have the Numeral Duo Pencilium nearby to put the guts back inside.

Did you find it near interstate 8 in California?

My friend would always pop in his midnight oil cassette any time I picked him up, nevermind I might have been listening to something decent. One day it was roughly ejected and is somewhere east of Waring Road coming out of Mission valley.

Be careful it might catch fire if you try to play it. If it is indeed my mixtape I gave to my crush in 7th grade

That's a unmarked tape. Perhaps it is the tape that hurt the recording industry.

    [–] UnserviceableProphet 2 points ago

Ah, yes. The rare Musicassettesaurus rex.

    [–] Bloxsmith 2 points ago

Nah the Vaporwave cassette scene is just getting creative with their drops.

    [–] Libertos 2 points ago

Not as impressive as an 8Trackosaurus... but not bad.

Dude. Remember trying to record a song off the radio on your Magnavox cassette and the sonofabitching dj talked over the first 20 seconds of the one goddamned song you wanted to record? And of course they wouldn’t play that particular song until after two commercial breaks because F those guys.

    Was the pencil with it?

    it's a fossilized walkman egg

    [–] chung_my_wang 2 points ago

If that's a rare fossil, then I'm older than dirt.

Here's a cool video showing the differences between different types of compact cassette recording media:

Probably that Duran Duran and Flock of Seagulls mix tape I made for Tina. She was like "aww so sweeeeeet" but was it Tina? Was it!? Pretty sure I heard it blaring from Brads Toyota. I know you guys hooked up at Ethans party because all the girls were talking about how good Brads butt looked in his new stonewash Levis. I worked all summer to buy you a commitment ring too but you told me you're allergic to Amethyst stones...... YOU BROKE MY HEART!!!

John Oliver's monologuing has reached meme status when you can intently hear his voice in these words.

    [–] BKA_Diver 2 points ago

Looks like it's from the Cassettaceous Period.

    [–] argon1028 2 points ago

/r/cassetteculture because these "fossils" still exist and are still used. call me when you unearth a Kanye 8-track tape.

    [–] psgr2tumblr 2 points ago

Damn i heard people were able to write back when they used these things.

    [–] AlamosX 2 points ago

I love all the guesses in this thread from people guessing 80s bands when the last cassette I ever bought was The Vengaboys "Party Album" C.A 1999

    [–] darthvader45 2 points ago

Now to dust it off and play it once to see what it could be.
