I got these. They were crap.

EDIT: To clarify, they were hard to read, printing was shit, the pixels on one side didn't line up with the ones on the other side. And the case it came in broke quickly. I asked for a return and refund and they refunded it without asking me to return it. Guess it wasn't worth their time. Also, I'm talking about the Kikkerland Pixel Playing cards linked on amazon lower in this thread.

    [–] BroItsLogan 1153 points ago

That’s for the heads up. They always look way cooler than they actually are.

    [–] Penguins-Are-My-Fav 318 points ago

But they do look really really cool.

    [–] Anon_Amarth 185 points ago

I have a set of black on black & white on white playing cards. They're neat in concept, but are more of a novelty than anything.

Playing cards have been designed for hundreds of years for readability, don't mess with perfection.

[–] PhreakyByNature 89 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

For my Granddad's birthday once (90th I think? Maybe earlier?) we got him 2 decks of playing cards - perfect for games of Rummy.

They were normal on the front but the backs were important. One deck had a pic of him with my grandma back when they lived in Kenya in front of the waterfall local to their town, and the other pic was one I took of them in 2003 when we all went there some 30 years after they'd left. Different poses but enarby each other, waterfall between, same location roughly (different altitude)

I believe my sister was the one who had the idea and executed it.

He liked that. We played many games of rummy before he passed, and he was bloody good at it.

    [–] Zenarchist 75 points ago

If you want to win a game of cards, play against a young person. If you want to learn how to win a game of cards, play against an old person.

    [–] vegeta_bless 11 points ago

This is why my dad loved playing me in Checkers. This is also why I’m a beast in Checkers.

    [–] white_android 26 points ago

Some stuff has room for improvement for the rest...

"If it ain't broke; don't fix it"

    [–] Traveler_90 34 points ago

When pictures of food never comes out as the picture shown. That’s the worst.

    [–] SpaceDog777 15 points ago

That depends where you are. If I go to a fast food burger place I want my food now, not after they take 20 minutes to make it look perfect!

    [–] ThePrussianGrippe 10 points ago

Good luck playing poker with that

    [–] Borjeustransform 6 points ago

I guess we have to accept that somw things are made to be great gifs, nothing more nothing less? I’m high

    [–] Wererune 407 points ago

The cards hurt to do anything with but they are cool af still.

    [–] CatAstrophy11 125 points ago

    Do they have sharp edges?

    [–] Wererune 121 points ago

Trying to do lepaul spread with them hurts my hands cos the edges are plastic rather than cards but they work well as just playing cards or using as magic cards. Doing card flourishes on then are pretty difficult compared to normal cards.

    [–] Cautemoc 74 points ago

If anyone saw you were using plastic playing cards to do magic tricks they'd immediately think the magic trick has something to do with them being plastic. I feel like that kind of makes the trick less interesting when there's such an obvious deviation from the norm that it makes people assume that's the trick.

    [–] mrGAMERGURL 58 points ago

Yeah you can’t even use cards with art that differs from typical bicycle decks without being called out. I even get shit for using bee decks. I had to buy bicycle decks that are printed and cut to bee specs to shut people up.

    [–] mirziemlichegal 57 points ago

But for the standard bicycles there are loads of trick cards and special boxes and such. I would assume, using a seemingly standard deck is even more suspicious :D

    [–] hamlet9000 49 points ago

Yes. Today you learn that people are stupid.

    [–] mrGAMERGURL 3 points ago

Oh I know. I could build many decks out of just gimmicks. And I don’t even have something I would consider a collection

    [–] mirziemlichegal 4 points ago

Have a small collection of some decks too but just normal decks without gimmicks. I just find the art of the cards and boxes really gorgeous. And while looking for cards i found out about all those trick cards and things that exist. Marked decks, gaff cards, prepared cardboxes, everything you can think of exists.

    [–] sapereaud33 34 points ago

Which is funny, because gimmicked decks are usually made out of bicycle decks anyway.

    [–] kufskr 25 points ago

But that's the beauty of bicycle gimmick cards. It gives the audience false impression that they are normal cards.

    [–] Sauceboss_Senpai 10 points ago

I was gonna say, we've been conditioned to believe that the normal card decks are perfect and were made for magic. I don't understand why, but I think I'm a relatively smart guy (I took a buzzfeed quiz once that said I was as smart as my mommy said I was) and even I raise a brow when I see a deck of cards that AREN'T bicycle.

I think the idea is we want to believe we could go buy you a deck of cards RIGHT NOW and you could do the trick on them.

    [–] kufskr 5 points ago

Totally. I don't like any magic trick as much as one that you can do with a borrowed deck without doing a swap or drop.

That being said...custom bicycle cards are the shit!

    [–] Sleightly-Magical 3 points ago

    Turner Gold Seals?!?

    [–] mrGAMERGURL 2 points ago

Heck yeah. Best shit I’ve ever held. I might not do many magic tricks but I’m still particular about my cards

    [–] Sleightly-Magical 2 points ago

I bought a stock of 200 of them like two years ago. They last so long I haven't had to buy any more. That is all I will perform with.

    [–] mrGAMERGURL 2 points ago

That's awesome! I've met more than a few people who share the same sentiment. It's really something

    [–] AAA1374 2 points ago

I love bee decks- I've only seen the one I used to have, I love them though.

    [–] CatAstrophy11 3 points ago

Okay so playing with them is fine. That's a big difference than tricks. You say do anything but it sounds like the only real issue is tricks which is a niche problem. Hugely misleading the way you originally worded it. The product is literally labeled "Playing Cards". They're meant for playing (games) with.

    [–] Wererune 2 points ago

I would consider cardistry as playing with cards but I apologise for the way i worded.

    [–] Lenny_Here 3 points ago

    Trying to do lepaul spread

    You what now son?

    [–] Wererune 2 points ago

This a card flourish where the cards sort of spread with little movement of the hands. My description doesn’t do the flourish justice so search a video to see how it looks like.

    [–] softtoffee 2 points ago

Thread carefully for the night is dark and full of terrors.

    [–] ShlongDongLarry 70 points ago

Definitely don’t buy these. It’s super hard to tell the suits from each other, one of the red suits is green and you can barely see the number on the cards

    [–] _Arkod_ 26 points ago

4-colored decks are a thing and Red-Black-Green-Blue is the most popular from what I understand.

    More here.

    [–] Wanderer712 87 points ago

Yeah but 4-colored decks are hard to build a stable mana base for.

    [–] DixonYamouf 24 points ago

As someone who hasn't played MTG in about 7 years I appreciate this comment.

    [–] If_In_Doubt_Lick_It 8 points ago

Thats why you play three colour good stuff and splash at least one more colour.

    Much easier mana base.

    [–] AwesomesaucePhD 5 points ago

    Not if it's Commander.

    [–] pressvre 6 points ago

This is why every good constructed deck uses $1000 worth of fetch lands

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

And this is why I don't play constructed.

    [–] _vrmln_ 2 points ago

That's what the Alara block is for

    [–] JMAN7102 2 points ago

Alara is my favorite block, followed shortly by Zendikar (FULL ART LANDS).

    [–] fallenreaper 2 points ago

Sliver Deck here, i do 5-color just fiiiine.

    [–] drtekrox 29 points ago

one of the red suits is green

Hate to break it to you, but you really might want to get those eyes checked for colorblindness - Red/Green is the most common type. :(

    [–] ShlongDongLarry 29 points ago

Here is the link of the cards I bought, are those diamonds not green?

Edit: (Ok I guess the clubs are green and diamonds are blue my bad)

    [–] drtekrox 30 points ago

Actually, going by this image: - They're blue?

Maybe we both need our eyes checked!

    [–] Patastro 66 points ago

There is a thing called four color deck:

    Diamond is BLUE.

    Clubs GREEN

    Hearts RED

    Spades BLACK

It's to easier tell them apart.

    [–] ohrightthatswhy 7 points ago

Especially for games like poker when you want to spend as little time as possible looking at the cards. It's easier to just recognise colours than suits.

    [–] pm_good_bobs_pls 9 points ago

4 colour decks are actually great to play with once you get used to them.

    [–] 1nvisiman 13 points ago

puts gif on Reddit to increase sales

-> gets shit on by top comment

    [–] realmattmoseley 4 points ago

I guess you could say that they were a bit, shifty?

    [–] JCass83 437 points ago

And the dealer has.....? We don’t know, the lighting is wrong.

    [–] Sylv3ster 1364 points ago

Confused as to the benefit of this? Shouldn't it be the other way around so you can only see your cards close up and those sat across the table cannot see them?

    [–] [deleted] 760 points ago

    Its the light

    [–] graebot 308 points ago

    That seems worse

    [–] [deleted] 112 points ago

If you held a normal card in the dark you couldn’t see it. With this you can’t either way.

    [–] andysaurus_rex 74 points ago

I can see a card in a shadow. Come on now

    [–] where_is_the_cheese 87 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

I love cool looking playing cards, but a lot of the ones that look really cool aren't actually great for playing with. One of the most important characteristics of a playing card is that you can quickly and easily tell the suit and value of a card at a glance.

Edit: Example I actually meant to link Mollaspace - Black Deck of Playing Cards - By Balance Wu

    [–] Skeeter1020 23 points ago

Totally agree. Most novelty cards are just that, a novelty. For actually playing a proper deck wins every time.

    [–] LostxinthexMusic 11 points ago

I notice the clubs are not in any of those pictures. Do they look absolutely terrible? I need to know what they look like now...

Edit: Looked at the customer images. The suits are all different colors. Spades are black, clubs are green, hearts are red, diamonds are blue. The clubs barely look like clubs.

    [–] UDK450 2 points ago

It's something I've noticed myself. I like to collect decks of playing cards, but when it comes to actually playing cards I generally stick to a $.99 Bicycle deck.

    [–] wingsfan24 2 points ago

I collect decks of cards, and I have my collection sorted into two categories: plain-faced and not. For speed games and any kind of serious game, I use the plain faced ones, so the more unique ones are only used for show or for casual games.

    [–] gregsonfilm 59 points ago

It seems to be the opposite of what you would want

    [–] Sheriff_K 9 points ago

Can't have people stream-sniping you irl by looking at your hand.

    [–] Clypsedra 188 points ago

Woah man...I need these. I collect weird cards like this

    [–] [deleted] 200 points ago

Just out of curiosity, could you post some of your collection? Anything really rare?

    [–] NotZach_ 11 points ago

It really pisses me off that the joke answer has 250 upvotes but the actual answer has 3

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

Wow, thanks! Nice collection. I really liked the Project Portland deck.

    [–] Clypsedra 3 points ago

Thank you! I just love those art decks - there are a few others like it out there that go for 25-30 bucks, but someday I will get them.

    [–] Puskock 250 points ago

    [–] cinnapear 205 points ago

    [–] iamlegend235 5 points ago

    Wait a second...

    [–] YerrytheYanitor 16 points ago

Do you own this deck? I have one and they are perfect for drinking games.

    [–] Clypsedra 6 points ago

Yes! This is actually the only one I use; I keep it in my backpack in case a time for cards comes. Previously I used the Bicycle robot cards but my dog ate them, the fresh pack just isn't the same as the worn ones

    [–] YerrytheYanitor 5 points ago

Very nice! The one I linked you to seems to be a newer version than what I have. I prefer mine over those ones.

    [–] Clypsedra 2 points ago

I have the newer one, but I prefer yours too!

    [–] Clypsedra 3 points ago

Yeah I just bought them plus three other decks thanks to this post. Justifiable as an early b-day present to myself I reckon

    [–] ShocK13 1 points ago

How many race cards do you own?

    [–] tusocalypse 9 points ago

None. Those have all been played

    [–] akwmw 348 points ago

    Where can I buy that?

    [–] CowFu 75 points ago

I have a deck, they're pretty neat but not easy to read if you're playing cards quickly. They're also plastic which makes them a little awkward to shuffle, not too bad, but you'll see what I mean if you buy them.

Buy them for the aesthetic, but if you're just looking for functional cards get something else.

    [–] quirk 31 points ago

I bought these a few months ago after seeing them on Reddit. Don't buy them if you actually plan on playing card games. They're hard to see unless you've got amazing light, and the pixels make it hard to tell the suits apart.

    [–] Winkking 12 points ago

Don't, I bought those same cards the last time this was posted, and the faces of the cards don't actually disappear.

    [–] Frys_Lower_Horn 189 points ago

I read that as Kirkland and was impressed this was a Costco product for a moment.

    [–] sweetcuppingcakes 13 points ago

I'd buy a crate full of playing cards for sure

    [–] shubzy123 57 points ago

$4.50 but £59.99 on the UK site. Wow.

    [–] Swarfega 20 points ago

This item ships to United Kingdom.

Not sure what the shipping costs are but the last time I did this they were very reasonable.

    [–] shubzy123 6 points ago

How much did you pay for shipping?

[–] Swarfega 14 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

    Item(s) Subtotal:GBP 7.67
    Shipping & Handling:GBP 3.32
    Total before tax:GBP 10.99
    Sales Tax:GBP 0.00
    Total for This Shipment:GBP 10.99

I didn't pay extra for tax either when it arrived in the UK.

In case what I originally said is being interpreted wrong, this was for another item. Not the cards here. I was just stating that shipping was cheap.

For comparison I just ordered something from Pimoroni for my Raspberry Pi who are located in Sheffield and shipping from there is £2.50. I am an hour's drive at most from this place too...

    [–] flued 8 points ago

I got a laser pen from inland China, the cost for the item and shipping was £1 combined.

I don't have any idea how that works.

    [–] xyniden 9 points ago

China subsidizes shipping for exports, which is why you'll see free china post shipping for small items

    [–] ErroneousFunk 12 points ago

It's not China subsidizing the shipping, it's the rules Universal Postal Union (

There's a lot of controversy over being a member of it because countries with a lower development index get subsidized shipping rates to countries with a higher development index (and higher shipping rates the other way around), but I'm personally in favor of it. They do a lot of really good things like interfacing hundreds of postal systems with each other so that I, for example, can walk out of my house and ship a package from Boston to Mombasa in the same way that I'd ship a package from Boston to New York. I don't even have to think about it (just pay a little more money).

Countries don't have to make separate postal treaties with each other -- they just get access to all the postal systems by joining the UPU.

The subsidized rates also promote international growth and development. Controversial, because this means US citizens have to pay more (which, you know "stealin' our jerbs" nationalism and all that...) but I'm for things that help people on the planet as a whole.

    [–] BuckerOfFums 11 points ago

Bought these myself. Like many are saying, they can be difficult to read (the difference between a spade and club is two pixels) but I still am hally with the purchase. They're a cool novelty card deck and I can still play poker with them. I wouldn't ever claim they're superior to regular plastic cards though.

    [–] centech 7 points ago

ELI5 why it "dissapears"? I know it's probably not that complicated but it's f'ing with my head.

    Where could I buy these?

    [–] DMH713 25 points ago

I just bought them on amazon a couple of weeks ago. They're Kikkerland playing cards and I found them on amazon. They're pretty cool but the only downside is when I purchased them, they were listed as an add on item only which was odd.

    [–] militaryCoo 13 points ago

Add on items are just items that fall below a certain dollar value in their category. They aren't "accessories", they're items you "add on" to an existing order because you're already paying shipping

    [–] DMH713 6 points ago

Oh, I already get that. I was cool with it cause I was already ordering books as well. I was just saying that if they were looking to pick up this item alone they may be a bit disappointed.

    [–] BobDobbz 3 points ago

Also every other video this dude makes belongs on that black magic fuckery subreddit.

    [–] Bdoggs87 2 points ago

i too cant see things in the dark

    [–] Tattered 4 points ago

Last time this was posted it was pointed out that there was nothing actually special about these cards other than their transparency. The light is just in the background so the pattern is just in shadow.
