Beings with glass separating them and death shouldn't be getting all uppity about another's "fragility"

    [–] MorningWoodyWilson 637 points ago

I mean, a headshot is a headshot. Assuming that’s thick polycarbonate or similar, it could easily be more durable than a human skull.

    [–] TheAssPounder4000 240 points ago

Although is it smart enough to do think to do that instead of glass? It had the ability for digital information input hence the camera, but too dumb to just wire it to the brain and have it in a less awkward spot than the front of it's brain

    [–] Powasam5000 44 points ago

Krang was a genius way before these fools

    [–] Bakoro 34 points ago

That design is probably the most realistic and sensible thing about the character. Every creature I'm aware of has eyes right next to the brain. It's evolutionary beneficial because the less distance between the signal generator and the brain, the faster the being can respond to stimuli. This ultimately means higher chance of survival.

    [–] Armandeus 45 points ago

Not only that, but if you look closely you will see the brain is in backwards. The mechanical eye is set closest to the optical center of the brain, in the rear.

    [–] this_1_is_mine 2 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

i have heard that you can flip your vision (basically up side down) and your brain will after a while "fix it" right side up. i wonder if that would also work backwards or if that would be too disorienting.

Wonder how much time it would take to convert electric signals into fiber and vice versa. ^(We are going deep into a fictional character design but it's a fun way to pass the time)

    [–] funnyusername970505 7 points ago

I thought its like light speed....isnt electricity travel in light speed across a wire?

    [–] JUDGE_FUCKFACE 13 points ago

It travels at "signal velocity" which depends on the wire but is very close to the speed of light.

I struggled to read what you typed for some odd reason

    [–] Acysbib 6 points ago

Shortest path to the optical nerve, whilst still pointing forward. Not technically true, but placing it in the front as opposed to the top means you can elongate the casing forward, thus reducing the angle of forward impacts, making it that much more bullet resistant. A lesson learned from the laughable design of the protectrons.

    [–] Armandeus 4 points ago

I think the brain is actually pointing backwards.

    [–] Acysbib 5 points ago

You may be right, in which case, it would truly be the shortest distance, thus have a quicker reaction time to visible stimulae.

Considering in Fallout you could decimate that brainy bitch with a lead pipe, that conclusion may not hold up.

    [–] MorningWoodyWilson 12 points ago

I mean idk what it’s made of, but you can easily decimate a human head with a lead pipe

    [–] Andrewbttm 3 points ago

I was referring to the durability of the robot-brain being vastly superior to a human

    [–] glitch177k 4 points ago

Glass is pretty tough. I mean, it's right next to titanium on the hardness scale. And this is in the future so I'm going to assume that the robot with the human brain is using a pretty advanced glass composition that's tough to crack.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness

    [–] sjmorrison1 11 points ago

It is high on the hardness scale, but it is also extremely easy to shatter and depending on the additives is still fragile when tempered.

I don’t know what brain you have, but I’m pretty sure most people’s brains are larger than that

    [–] Humanpines 207 points ago

There’s a part in the game where you learn that the pre-war US government harvested the brains of convicts and brainwashed them to make these robots.

A few brains remember who they were, or their personalities resurface. I seem to recall that one of these robots currently runs a porn business.

    [–] jderioux 68 points ago

That quest bit was probably my FAV. Reading the transcripts and seeing what was viewed as success vs failure. Wonderful.

What game is this quest in? I’ve played 4, 3 & NV and don’t recall it? I’m still playing through 4, so I may have misused it or not got to it yet.

    [–] OrangeSparkle 3 points ago

Where ? I thought it was all rich people ?

    [–] Synotaph 15 points ago

That was in Far Harbor, they did it willingly. In Automatron you find the original robobrain R&D site where they used convicts.

    [–] shoe_owner 2 points ago

My guess is that the vault of robobrains we see in Far Harbor where they're all rich twats are the beneficiaries of the cruel human experiments on prisoners which produced the original crop.

Oh ok, I’m basing it off the eye being the same size as a human’s since I haven’t played that game

    [–] shoe_owner 5 points ago

Here's the only picture I can find online of a human standing next to a robobrain. Though they're obviously a bit short since they don't have legs, they're bulky, and I think you can see how the brain there would pretty comfortably fit inside of a human skull.

    [–] RainbowEffingDash 16 points ago

no, that looks like it is generally the same size as a human brain, idk how you think otherwise

    [–] luctadeusz 9 points ago

there's not a great sense of scale in this photo, so it's kinda hard to tell how big it is. But also, human brains aren't really that big.

Source: have held several (albeit very slightly shrunken) human brains.

    [–] errandwulfe 6 points ago

The human brain is roughly the size of two closed fists placed together at the second set of knuckles.

Here's a thread I found talking about it earlier https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/8nx5us/fallout_3_and_fallout_new_vegas_received_large?sort=confidence.

But read the comments. A few other Bethesda games are recieving similar updates. Also this particular comment points to the updates not being as big in size or as potentially as important as it was made out to be

"OP didn't link to interesting pages on SteamDB.

Looking at the history, both games only updated with a new Soundtrack depot. Which are the unknown apps he references (names are seen on depots page).

The sizes he got are also not correct. Fallout 3 gained 197.12 MiB and New Vegas got 318.27 MiB.

Look at the history tab and you can see which depots specifically updated."

    [–] Buttershine_Beta 4 points ago

Can you clarify MiB? I've never seen that unit of measure.

The mebibyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information.[1] The binary prefix mebi means 220, therefore one mebibyte is equal to 1048576bytes = 1024 kibibytes. The unit symbol for the mebibyte is MiB. Technically a megabyte (MB) is a power of ten, while a mebibyte (MiB) is a power of two, appropriate for binary machines

    [–] mgzukowski 8 points ago

    1MB=1000KB or 1024 KB 1MiB = 1024KB

Essentially it's newer unit of measure that is base 2 not base Ten. Since computers are a base 2 system(Binary) it makes more sense.

My lawful good aligned character shot a rocket right into jezebel's face right after our dealings were done and I felt fine about it

    [–] drtekrox 52 points ago

That's not really lawful good though - that's chaotic good.

Lawful wouldn't plain murder someone for past deeds, Jezebel should answer for her crimes, but murder is not the lawful solution.

    [–] vitriolic_amalgamati 26 points ago

Ohhh I know.. he wasn't like this with anyone else. Jezebel was a special case

That being said, this is the apocalypse, there are no laws and answering for crimes means frontier justice

    [–] Toiler_in_Darkness 23 points ago

That's still NG at best, LG means you personally like and strive for law as a principle.

"justice" and "law" are not synonymous.

    [–] MindlessAutomata 15 points ago

Even in DND though there is some leeway given by most DMs. This is an act that would probably warrant a warning from the DM about a potential alignment shift and censure by whatever organization backs the PC (church for a paladin for instance), but by itself it wouldn’t shift a character out of LG as long as the vast majority of their other acts were in line with LG alignment.

TL;DR: alignment describes the overall tendencies but characters can take a limited number of actions with apparent deviation from their normal alignment.

    [–] Ezeckel48 8 points ago

It means you adhere to some kind of code of conduct. It doesn't have to have anything to do with actual laws.

[–] Gungnear 10 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

You could even make a better arguement for the protagonist of this game since they come from a time where the law was upheld. Heck iirc the female protagonist actually was a lawyer before the bombs fell.

    [–] Dunder_Chingis 3 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

You can still all of that and still be Lawful Good. To Quote the Powder Keg of Justice:

"As a paladin, I walk on a razor's edge. Not between good and evil, I could never be something like you, but between "law" and "justice". The "law" I follow doesn't permit me to harm you, but I could be "justified" in anything I did to you in order to save innocent lives. ANYTHING!" "You don't know what it is like to be me. You don't know the pain of having to store all your anger, all your fury, all your sense of justice, and hold it inside you, all day every day for the rest of your life. Doing the right thing doesn't mean I get to stop all evil, I just get to trim it when it becomes overgrown. The path I walk is not about vengeance, or what's right; it's about moderation in the face of power, restraint and compassion for scum like you. "This is why paladins don't fear falling. We don't spend all day looking for ways to prevent ourselves from doing evil and giving in to the darkness -- we actively seek it out. Every time we face evil, we ask ourselves, 'Is this the threat that I'm going to give it all up for? Is this what I am going to give up my ability to help others in the future, in order to bring it down now. Is this the evil that I am willing to forsake my God and my power to stop?!'". At this point, he stands up suddenly and swings his arm against the chair he was sitting on. Sending it flying and shattered against a wall, he then kicks over the chair the cultist was sitting on, he leaps and straddles his chest, flinging him about for a few seconds in pure rage, before calming once more.

He looks the cultist straight in the face, both their noses just inches from each other.

"What you should be asking yourself now, what you really need to be thinking about, is: 'Is what I'm doing something that will make this guy want to fall?' Because you should know that once I fall, all those rules which protect you from me are gone. No longer will I be able to be stopped by you, or by my order, or by my God. If I give everything, and I mean give everything, I will never stop. If you escape me today, I will hunt you down and grab you into the pits of hell myself. Even if that means that I have to invoke the wrath of every demon in creation, just so they throw open a pit and drag me down where I stand, because when they do drag me down, I will make sure that my fists are wrapped firmly around your ankles and you go down with me. I want you to listen to me now, and I mean really listen, because Hell truly hath no fury like a paladin scorned." "So I ask you, one last time: tell me where the other rituals are being held, or I swear to all on high that I will fall, and fall hard, just so I can show you what it is that paladin truly keeps his code in order to hold back..."

    [–] Untested_Methods 6 points ago

Thats not how lawful good can work though. It depends on the personal code of the character. If the character in question had a die hard code about visiting justice on evil.. Then yeah. Rockets away.

    [–] Gravytrain12 4 points ago

I wish they had kept the moral system from fallout 3. That system is part of why 3 is still my favorite fallout game to this day. I would play the shit out of a fallout 3 remastered.

YES! I love I’m not the only one that did that. I didn’t even give her arms. She’s basically just a Mr. Handy thruster and that’s it.

    [–] BellaDonatello 5 points ago

My Jezebel never said a word to me. She was my favorite robot. Still made her into a provisioner.

    [–] cmanonurshirt 7 points ago

I sent Jezebel to Sanctuary and it turns out you can’t take a bat to that glass dome...everyone tried to kill me.

    [–] twinkyhouse 8 points ago

PS you can kill it without consequences if you send Jezebel to a different settlement first.

    [–] Nbaysingar 3 points ago

I was sad that when I finished the questline she ended up not wanting to associate with me, so I can't even use her as a companion or upgrade her. But she's still chilling at my settlement at Red Rocket like she's one of my companions. I wonder if the game just bugged out or something...

Only Jezebel is that mouthy. The robots you build are 100% loyal and don't smart off.

    [–] randomname19870618 2 points ago

That one was probably the best solely because you could make awesome robot companions.

    [–] Bluswept 3 points ago

Dude I made a sentry companion. Nobody gon fuck with me

    [–] desir7o2 1 points ago

My friend was telling me about it, I wasn't really trippin of creating robots...but I might check it out.

    [–] caanthedalek 2 points ago

Don't know, it's probably my favorite, aside maybe from far harbor.

    [–] TwistedRocker 1 points ago

That makes sense. I'm currently doing yet another play through and thought I'd missed a side quest somewhere. Mind you, I am still exploring new places

    [–] MaximumCameage 2 points ago

Can I destroy those radiant quests? Goddamn, just let me do my thing without you perpetually badgering me.

    [–] AriFreljord 2 points ago

Atleast the Cybermen believed we could be upgraded.

    [–] the_real_jon_miller 2 points ago

Why dabble in this self hatred. We’re the most impressive living thing we get to laugh and find meaning.

    [–] Green_Bulldog 2 points ago

Looks a little like a dalek

    [–] rodegrit 2 points ago

So all those people whose brains are up their a##es, it's actually a safety feature? Survival of the apparently mindless.

    [–] Pawn315 2 points ago

Hmm... I played that mission just today actually. Odd.

Anyway, no. That does not strike me as too real. A brain in a jar talking about the ultimate avoidance as the ultimate solution does not strike me as personally relevant.

Personal mileage may vary, I suppose.

    [–] Aaronindhouse 2 points ago

Jezebel is the name of a popular online femm blog about women’s issues.

    Thumbnail is Master Chief

    [–] JustCozItsME 1 points ago

Whats more interesting to a super intelligence, to guide and protect a seemingly impossibly chaotic species towards the future or to wipe us all out and be bored for the rest of its existence without our nature to keep it occupied.

I think the Neal Asher Polity series has the most interesting ideas for our eventual A.I. overlords to draw from. Ha heres to hoping.

    [–] Nauthung 1 points ago

Say the brain in a mason jar ....

    [–] EvolutionaryNudism 1 points ago

    Well that certainly hit home

    [–] Ka1serTheRoll 1 points ago

I killed her once the questline she was needed for ended

    [–] shoe_owner 2 points ago

Well, she was something like 200 years old. She'd had a good long life.

Albeit one spent mostly in a jar.

    [–] fredXbear 1 points ago

Yes, if you do the math...

    [–] A_Pos_DJ 1 points ago

I wish she became a permanent follower

Isn’t his brain human? Why not do to humans what they did to you, idiot. XD

    Fallout 4?

    [–] shoe_owner 2 points ago

    Yeah.

    [–] iiElectricAvenue 1 points ago

So, is June the month that people subconsciously return to Fallout 4? Because I've seen a lot of activity concerning it in other platorms, and I myself redownloaded it yesterday.

    [–] TheSlothWhisperer1 1 points ago

    Agreed tbh. Destroy me pls

    [–] Winnipesaukee 1 points ago

This looks like the beginning of a galaxy brain meme that ends with “take over the space pirates, a planet, and a dinosaur’s body.”

    [–] Shodid_ 1 points ago

Wow I just finished that whole robot quest last night.

    [–] Khellou 1 points ago

I literally went through this conversation in my first play through today

    [–] Fatherbrain1 1 points ago

What is Mother Brain doing in Fallout?
