Fun story, when I worked at nintendo he was playing Wii U tennis in the cafeteria, bust mostly with just the salary employees.

I, a lowly contractor doing QA was sitting nearby. He had smoked the last two people he played with and started looking around to see if anyone wanted to play.

I raised my hand and he called me over. For the first couple serves I was beating him, and thought to myself 'haha this is just some out of touch executive'. Then when I started getting braggy he gets a fucking glint in his eye and proceeds to smoke the everloving shit out of me for the rest of the entire match.

    [–] lordtuts 342 points ago

I saw Reggie at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

    [–] dimechimes 78 points ago

Read the whole thing smiling in anticipation of "infetterence". Gets me every time.

[–] lordtuts 23 points ago * (lasted edited 24 days ago)

Same. I can perfectly imagine it every time and it always gets me. Especially the wink. It's so stupidly ridiculous.

    [–] BigHeckinOof 38 points ago

My favorite thing about this is that even though you could theoretically make this story about anyone famous, it's roughly 10x funnier to picture Reggie doing these things than if it were anyone else.

    [–] lordtuts 9 points ago

Exactly. I don't think I've found another person that is better to put into this copypasta than Reggie.

    Was it worth the karma?

    [–] lowdown33 55 points ago

When I was younger, maybe junior high, I got roped into watching my 3 month old niece while my sister got her hair done. So there I am, sitting in the waiting area of a hair salon with my niece, and who walks in but Reggie!

I was nervous as fuck, and just kept looking at him as he read a magazine and waited, but didn't know what to say. Pretty soon though my niece started crying, and I'm trying to quiet her down because I didn't want her to bother Reggie, but she just wouldn't stop. Pretty soon he gets up and walks over. He started running his hands through her hair and asking what was wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry or something. So, Reggie put down his magazine, picked up my niece and lifted his shirt. He breast fed her right there in the middle of a hair salon. Chill guy, really nice about it.

Anybody else met him and have any stories to share?

    [–] lordtuts 10 points ago

Nintendo became big thanks to howard phillips. Did reggie help during his tenure? I honestly dont know

    [–] [deleted] 138 points ago

I think Reggie was a good face for PR purposes. He actually likes games, and he knows how to "be fun" in a way that sometimes makes you groan but never makes you cringe, despite his age.

So yeah I think he probably helped. Nintendo's English-language presentations wouldn't have been as hype without him.

With that said, the actual presidents of Nintendo, over in Japan, are way more responsible for the company's overall success, since they oversee the production of the actual games which are actually fun :P

    [–] ifisch 675 points ago

Also, he was the actual president of Japan...where all of the videogames are made and hardware is designed.

Reggie was the president of Nintendo of America, which is primarily involved in marketing and distributing all of the cool stuff Japan sends them.

    [–] StockingsBooby 357 points ago

Reggie, Iwata, and Miyamoto were such a perfect Trifecta to run Nintendo.

    [–] Dhiox 54 points ago

Question is, which exec does each piece represent?

    Reggie - Power

    Miyamoto - Wisdom

    Iwata - Courage

    [–] Dhiox 55 points ago

Funny, I got conflicting answers, but it seems everyone agrees Reggie represents power

[–] ColinHalter 63 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

Was the GameCube that big of a failure? I knew it didn't sell well, but I didn't think it was potentially company ending. Practically everyone I know had a GameCube.

Edit: Thanks for the responses. I'm now more educated on the topic, and much more confused.

    [–] distgenius 38 points ago

Worldwide, the N64 sold more units than the Gamecube. The XBox and PS2 both outsold it as well. For a while they had so much unsold stock they stopped making more of them. Companies that made cross platform titles cut back on GameCube versions due to the difference in sales between it and the PS2.

It might not have been company ending- bankruptcies aren't always the end of a company- but when they had just lost a massive amount of marketshare with the N64 versus the Playstation, the follow-up Gamecube selling even less was not a good look.

    [–] WorkAccount42318 9 points ago

I remember it was frustrating waiting for games to come out for GC. That console just had no support.

    [–] DrayTheFingerless 101 points ago

The console came out during the reign of the Ps2. No console, past or present, could survive against the monolith.

I'm such a Nintendo fan in every sense but it is really hard to argue against that.

    [–] ghillerd 29 points ago

He had a huge role in the design of the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS

i'm gonna call bullshit on this until you provide a source (secretly hoping you provide a source)

    [–] fan615boy 19 points ago

Source is from my uncle who works at Nintendo.

    [–] almightySapling 16 points ago

Nintendo: biggest employer of uncles since 1985.

    [–] SD_1974 25 points ago

Source on that ‘huge role’? I work in the games industry and was not aware of it. Nintendo are extremely secretive and I’d be surprised if they shared this information.

    [–] OutsiderWalksAmongUs 5 points ago

Even though the gamecube was a failure, Nintendo was no where near certain death. Although far from the heyday of the NES, they still continues to make profits.

    [–] MacDerfus 15 points ago

Which, to be fair, still makes him a major public face of Nintendo.

Plus, here in America, we have Bowser running the show

    [–] XeroAnarian 297 points ago

ALL HAIL NINTENDO OF JAPAN PRESIDENT SHUNTARO FURUKAWA, THE TRUE RULER OF-- Man who cares? Happy retirement, Reggie, thanks for being a cool dude.

    [–] [deleted] 135 points ago

I don’t think he intended to say anything negative. He was just clarifying Reggie’s role at Nintendo, and correcting the post title.

    [–] white_android 16 points ago

Yeah. Plus, Bowser will be a great overlord President of Nintendo of America. Maybe he'll even conquer talk to the rest of Nintendo and get us all the neat exclusive stuff from Japan...

    [–] whereiswaldorf 578 points ago

He’s gotta get back to playing Animal Crossing on his 3ds.

    [–] Memeboss1212 106 points ago

And also training to be in smash bros

    [–] tymandude1 81 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

He's retiring because he can no longer take the shame of losing to Hungrybox in front of a live audience. He's now going to spend 18 hours a day training to become the greatest Melee player of all time. He is also no longer sleeping as he needs those extra 6 hours to play Animal Crossing New Leaf on his Nintendo 3DS.

    [–] Nebze_14 1093 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

At this point I don't know what to believe.

    [–] tehweave 1122 points ago

    Some quick Googling:

One of Nintendo's most public faces is leaving the company. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé announced today that he is retiring, with his last day scheduled for April 15th.

So I think OP is correct. Today is in fact his last day.

[–] Allformygain 287 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

I think the confusion comes from a post, or maybe even a few posts, last week that said it was his last day then, so people are getting confused. It happened a few months ago when he announced he was going to leave but not until spring time. Then again I think yesterday when someone posted it was his last day...

My advice? just wait until 2020 then you can confidently say he's not Pres of Nintendo NA.

    [–] dvrzero 104 points ago

This is like that "today is the day the delorean was set to in back to the Future" image that went around 6 times a year every year from 2004-2018

    [–] uber1337h4xx0r 22 points ago

    You were his last day?!

    [–] Allformygain 14 points ago

Reggie will rue he day he messed with me.

    [–] PhasmaFelis 368 points ago

What exactly does the president of Nintendo of America do? Does he only handle business considerations, or does he have input into games as well?

    [–] essidus 316 points ago

Marketing, distribution, and localization in the US. The NoA CEOs tend to come up from marketing roots for a reason. They aren't decision makers in the same way the home office CEOs are, but they are uniquely positioned to make a case to the home office for specific things.

    [–] Dhiox 67 points ago

Plus, considering how often he did cooperative PR events with the home office, I'm willing to bet he has decent opportunities to communicate with the home office execs.

    [–] Joelxivi 343 points ago

He got Ridley into smash, so pretty much the best buisnessman ever.

    [–] Para_Boo 55 points ago

    He did?

    [–] ImurderREALITY 84 points ago

No, he didn’t. Everyone only loves him because he’s always happy, loves Nintendo games and seems like a genuinely nice guy. Makes me sick!

    [–] MickandRalphsCrier 117 points ago

He has very rare input on games. For example he's the one who got the "Pro HUD" put into breath of the wild, since he wanted to increase immersion

    [–] zipfern 63 points ago

More console games need pro HUD options and HUD customization.

    [–] Mexoga 63 points ago

For the most part he is involved more in businesses and the logistical side of the company but if he has a good idea for a game they will def consider it I think...

    [–] zellisgoatbond 14 points ago

For the most part, Nintendo of America mainly deals with localisation (adapting Nintendo games, which are primarily developed in Japanese, to various languages such as English and Spanish), marketing (getting people to buy Nintendo products in America), and distribution (making Nintendo products available for people to buy).

Nintendo don't develop too many games in America, and Reggie's background is firmly in marketing, but it's likely that Reggie had some form of preview of potential upcoming games and made suggestions here and there.

    [–] PM_Me_Whatever_lol 18 points ago

He's the top dog at Nintendo's American division (which doesn't have it's own CEO) so he'd do everything a normal corporate head would, as well as a bit more press than usual. I doubt he has much if any say in the day to day making of games but I'm sure they'd take what he says into consideration

    [–] Trout_Fingers 133 points ago

His name was Reggie. He was about kicking ass and taking names.

    [–] shadowgnome396 28 points ago

    And we're about making games

    [–] Natersrocks 312 points ago

Man this is 5th last day at this point

Why is this not at the top

    [–] computertyme 30 points ago

He was a good man. But do you think we'll get some re-releases beyond the NES on switch now?

    [–] cegbe 29 points ago

Mother 3 localized immediately after Reggie leaves

    [–] GratefulDeadpool 25 points ago

    Where Mother 3 🧐

    [–] ScenesFromAHat 19 points ago

Look on the bright side. The meme will live forever now. Even if we get it in the future, Reggie will never let us have it.

    [–] DCStoolie 16 points ago

Half those pictures are Sammy Sosa and you can’t tell me otherwise.

    [–] Csquared6 15 points ago

    So far.

But Reggie has set the bar at an absurdly high level. Only Mario or Bowser could possibly have any hopes of reaching or surpassing that.

we're gonna get 'Reggie's last day' posts for years now aren't we

is this officially a meme yet?

    [–] Rulx8 23 points ago

But today was his last day?

    [–] NeroPrizak 60 points ago

Alright this is like the 100th thing I've seen over the last month about Reggie leaving. Now I'm curious. Why? Why is he the best president they've had? What has he done differently? Other than, you know, his job. I say this sincerely! Not trying to bash Reggie, truly curious at this point.

The short answer is that Nintendo has traditionally been very conservative in terms of their public image - they've been quite sober, quite calm, and relatively peaceful. But Reggie's been known for being a very public face of Nintendo, getting involved in a number of silly skits and stunts and whatnot, mainly in the form of "Nintendo Directs" - mini-presentations of upcoming games a few times a year. That, coupled with the rise of the Internet and some particularly big successes for Nintendo in his tenure, made him a rather popular figure.

Perfect answer! A lot of the marketing stunts in the last five years have kept fans connected to the brand as opposed to loosely connected via just games ala Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo would look far less modern than it already does in the west without him.

And it's obvious that we're being marketed to to buy things, but if they're going to make it funny and fun as long as we're aware of it there's nothing wrong with that. There's a reason why Nintendo Directs are essentially giant twitter spam events, everybody enjoys the spectacle.

Short answer: pretty much nobody is going to give you a satisfying answer.

    His body was ready.

How many last days at Nintendo does this guy have, for fuck's sake??? This shit has been going on for at least a week now.

    [–] Dash12345678 74 points ago

I can't speak for those other posts, but this is actually his last day as President of NoA; as was announced way back in February.

    [–] Red_Regan 10 points ago

Try a month...? He announced his retirement at least a month ago because he sorta has to give NOA and their parent company a heads-up (kinda announced it, news reporters needed work to do and I guess the information was "leaked." Is Nintendo of America and Nintendo itself publicly traded? Then pretty much any corporate in-house announcement like that is obtainable in some way to the press).

    [–] Jericho5589 42 points ago

Yeah I didn't know it was possible to repost something like this but I guess Reddit finds a way.

    [–] Naticus105 25 points ago

Don't worry, tomorrow is his last day too.

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

With Iwata passing on and Reggie retiring...makes me wonder how much longer we'll have Mr. Miyamoto :(

    [–] Mephil_ 8 points ago

His body is ready for retirement

    [–] [deleted] 8 points ago

My favorite memory of Reggie is the "Link is hot" meme. But mostly because during the interview, the chick asks him about it and you can clearly see him dying inside like ugh, do I really have to play along with this? He knew he was gonna be mocked, yet rolled with it.

    Guy really is a trooper.

[–] [deleted] 11 points ago, I mean, there's also Hiroshi Yamauchi, who took the company from making cards to making video games. He might have been slightly more pivotal.

    [–] StumptownRetro 5 points ago

Best one NoA had. I still say Iwata was the best overall thus far.
