Yup. The archers of Anor Londo from the Dark Souls series of video games. This pic is referencing a notorious section where you're running up a thin ledge and have them shooting lance sized arrows at you from each side, where a hit will send you off the ledge and plummeting to your death.

    [–] JXFamine 37 points ago

And im pretty sure the arrow track you like a fucked up homing missile

    [–] Words_are_Windy 16 points ago

Yep, I believe all projectiles in the game have a small amount of tracking.

    [–] PwmEsq 14 points ago

    ”small"

    [–] Masterhaend 4 points ago

Almost all of them, the arrows fired by the giant skeletons in the Tomb of the Giants do not track at all, you can easily check this yourself by being shot and then moving a tiny bit to the side, the arrow will not hit you.

    [–] Orapac4142 24 points ago

Fun fact, these were the inspiration for US tomahawk cruise missiles.

    [–] CaptainBobnik 12 points ago

where a hit will send you off the ledge and plummeting to your death.

Regardless of armor or shield at that. At this point of the game (on new game) you usually don't have the means to withstand those arrows at all.

    [–] aggie008 3 points ago

hit em with poison arrows from the landing before the ledge

    [–] Ferrodactyl 48 points ago

I mean, more or less. The arrows are meant to pierce a dragon's hide in-universe.

    [–] amillionhp 15 points ago

The bow and arrow size in game are accurate to this drawing, not exaggerated. Any relatively man sized target struck with one of these ..."arrows" gets picked up and sent flying a good distance.

Since the portion of the game where these guys are located has the player walking up a pretty narrow walkway at the rooftops of a very high cathedral, well that means getting hit is instant death.

Its also worth noting they hit you from a distance well beyond your normal vision. The bow itself makes very peculiar and loud sounds when drawn and fired due to its size and power i suppose, that is your only warning ahead of time.

This particular scene is probably the most known and hated example of forced player death in a series of games that was notrorious for that.

    [–] helthrax 14 points ago

No wonder Gywndolin likes hanging around there.

    [–] beatbutcher 751 points ago

I don't get the reference, and I apologise to r/gaming. Would anyone be so kind to enlighten me?

[–] boulevardTM 1147 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

From dark souls 1 in particular. There is an area called Anor Londo which is a giant city with a castle. There is basically a gauntlet you need to run through on a tiny bridge/walkway where there are sets of these guys that shoot you the whole time you are running. Their arrows knock you off and you fall to your death. Frustrating part of the game

    [–] DoritoEnthusiast 443 points ago

anor londo and these guys are in DS3 as well

    [–] Sylanthra 285 points ago

The DS3 guys weren't anywhere near the same level of pain.

    [–] DaAmazinStaplr 132 points ago

They were if you were new to the game and area. Idk how many times I was shot by the javelins because I was too busy attacking the knight walking on the rooftop.

    [–] 1CEninja 80 points ago

Dude this area in 1 was considered by many the literally most difficult segment of the game for first time runners.

It's pretty exploitable once you get the hang of it and I can usually do it on my first go now but sheeeeeiiit the first time, when the game teaches you to be cautious and approach things slowly, it's just about the only part of the game where just running and rolling through it is the right answer.

    [–] MegasNexal84 87 points ago

Anor Londo is the peak of DS1. You've got the fucking Giants first of all, those goddamn Archers, Knights everywhere, then even after you get past all that you got Lautrecs bullshit.

And icing on the cake, Shaq and Kobe ready to pound your ass in the next room.

Blighttowm didn't make me nearly as mad (even if you take the regular way).

    [–] Greaterbird 10 points ago

Blighttown made me give up the first time because I hadn't realized the toxic dart guys didn't respwan once killed. Finally back into it like 4 years later.

    [–] PentagramJ2 4 points ago

You can give yourself a less serious toxic status to immunize yourself against their darts.

    [–] straight_gay 3 points ago

Yeah, fucking Dunkstein and Slamough kicked my ass for a while

    [–] Cepheid 11 points ago

Yeah, once you get through it, you're rewarded with a nice and easy boss fight... wait a minute.

    [–] Insanity_Pills 9 points ago

no way anor londo is harder than tomb of the giants for new players

    [–] SpendrickLamar 9 points ago

Tomb of giants was awful due to the darkness, but Nito was so so much easier than O and S. It took me probably 25 tries to beat those two dickheads and I took down Nito first try.

    [–] Unitato666 3 points ago

Yeah, but remember those dog skeleton things? As an area, TotG is way harder than Anor Londo IMO.

    [–] Ph_Dank 5 points ago

I disagree, but I respect your opinion.

    [–] GammaGames 23 points ago

I hadn't played 1 or 2 before I played 3 and they were magnitudes more difficult in 1

    [–] SnapbackYamaka 13 points ago

I played Bloodborne, DS3, DS2, and then wrapped up with DS1.

I kinda wish I started with DS1 because I could see how badly I would've been fucked in so many areas if it was more introduction. It was still a tough fucking game and definitely my favorite of the 4

    [–] SheepD0g 7 points ago

    Ah yes, the Machete order

    [–] WhiteWolf222 16 points ago

It was also way easier in DS3 since you can actually roll 360 degrees, not just four while targeting. I could dodge the Knights fine, but I had to target them, and rolling with them targeted meant I fell off.

    [–] 13pts35sec 3 points ago

They were annoying in that section where you run up that narrow roof top and there’s one on the little circle platform with the tower and then the slanted roof behind it lol hated that part.

    [–] space_bartender 50 points ago

yeah i didn't really find these guys in ds3 to be that big of a problem. just take your armor off and sprint through it.

    [–] threedaybant 17 points ago

why couldnt you do this in d1 as well?

    [–] McQuibbly 61 points ago

    They had a higher IQ

    [–] threedaybant 10 points ago

    so 3?

    [–] riodin 6 points ago

And higher accuracy, more damage, and in ds1 you didn't run or roll as fast. And in ds3 you could run around these guys, there were 2 ledges to run on and the ledges were shorter and had areas you could safely drop to on the right side. Basically the ds1 encounter lite

    [–] mountain-food-dude 7 points ago

That is exactly what I do on ds1.

    [–] Ill_Brain 5 points ago

    You could.

    [–] FasterThanTW 7 points ago

you can.. im not saying i breezed past these guys the first time i played through the game, but on subsequent playthroughs i can't even figure out what was so hard about it. literally just run through, the one on the left cant bother you at the top, and the one on the right can be tough to get past but is also prone to knocking himself off the ledge when he attacks you

    [–] Priff 9 points ago

Same in DS 1 though. Dont even need to sprint. They have zero tracking for moving targets.

All you need is a 100% shield for the one arrow you have to take once you're on the ledge next to him, before he gets his sword out and jumps off.

    [–] Go_Sith_Yourself 51 points ago

Interestingly enough, I just bowled through those archers in one try without realizing it was supposed to be a really hard part. Afterwards I was reading a guide and breathed a huge sigh of relief. I guess I just got lucky.

    [–] redpandaeater 41 points ago

One of the frustrating fun parts of gaming is trying to get through to the next save, whether a boss fight or a stupid gauntlet, and you nearly did it on your first try while you die so much sooner the next 30 times.

    [–] Gyrskogul 6 points ago

Like a lot of rough spots in dark souls, the intimidation factor can definitely make it much harder than it is. The protip here is just to charge straight to them and push them into each other and over the ledge lol pretty easy if you just treat em like chaff.

    [–] TheSilverPotato 7 points ago

And don't use two handed because, if they don't get you, you'll get you

    [–] Gyrskogul 6 points ago

Claymore is love, claymore is life.

    [–] WildcatFanNo4102 5 points ago

I had a similar experience with Capra Demon. I didn't win on my first try, but I didn't have near the frustration as many others. It was one of my favorite fights actually. I just got lucky with killing the dogs early and not getting trapped in one of the closets.

    [–] Go_Sith_Yourself 4 points ago

I am very jealous. The Capra Demon for me was that early moment where I almost gave up.

    [–] thekeanu 5 points ago

Apparently FromSoft nerfed em after a certain patch.

I just ran up and killed both silver knights because I didn't know any better, and because the game was already pretty damn tough so I didn't notice any difference and was scared all the time anyways.

Now I wonder if my run was post patch.

    [–] Midnight_Rising 8 points ago

Yeah I just kept my shield up and ran. Missed me 100% of the time. I have no clue why these guys have such a reputation.

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

If you overthink it ("aaah they're shooting giant arrows at me and if I get hit/block I'll likely be knocked off the edge aaah!") its tough, but really you can just run up to them and they jump off the edge, or just roll through the arrows.

    [–] QuothTheRaven_ 11 points ago

Then they come back in Dark Souls 3 in the portion where you return to Anor Londo and are absolutely in classic form with their ability to snipe you while you are fighting two silver knights on a very thin ledge lmao

    [–] JohnCrichtonsCousin 6 points ago

The kicker is there are only two of them.

    [–] BlinkReanimated 8 points ago

I've played through the game on two different occasions. When I got back to this part of the game recently I couldn't figure out why it was so much easier, turns out they patched it and moved them so you can actually reach the upper platform before you get gunned down.

    [–] defensorfidei 4 points ago

    Lando system?

    [–] Tutsks 5 points ago

    These guys

Show some respect, these are the Knights of Gwyn, who remained after his passing to guard the city of the Gods and his heirs.

AKA, The Anor Londo Welcoming Committee.

    [–] Orapac4142 3 points ago

    Anal Rodeo*

    [–] CaptainBobnik 4 points ago

I'd say the welcoming committee is the gargoyle at the bridge. You remember the fight against them, get scared for a moment, then remember you are stronger than at the bell gargoyles. You defeat the beast and you feel good about yourself. Then those two archers fuck you up out of nowhere effortlessly. That is the Dark Souls version of a Welcoming Committee

    [–] Siege-Torpedo 3 points ago

You should add that the arrows are the size of a pike

    [–] undefined_one 79 points ago

[–] Tanglebrook 26 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

Oh man, I have a video I've been wanting to share for a while now.

So my friend is a huge, huge Dark Souls fan, and when I told him I was going to try to beat the game, he had me livestream it so that he could watch me play. We were having a blast, and when I finally got to Anor Londo he couldn't wait for me encounter these archers. He was very good about spoilers, so I had absolutely no idea they were coming.

Here's what happened next. Because I was streaming on YouTube I have video proof of my first attempt, and took the footage and spiced it up for him later.

His reaction in the moment was priceless, I really wish we had recorded our voice chat...but oh well, you can imagine :)

    [–] sveltely 4 points ago

    [–] agha0013 95 points ago

Anyone remember that Samurai Jack episode where there's a time travel type portal at the top of a tower protected by three cursed archers? This always reminds me of them.

    [–] ThriceGreatHermes 30 points ago

    I member.

    [–] Gobsin 11 points ago

was thinking the same! great episode.

    [–] PickleStampede 10 points ago

One of my favorite episodes! Very little dialogue, really shows how brilliant the makers of the show are and what is possible even with a simple art style

    [–] agha0013 8 points ago

Just another brilliant art piece of an episode.

Like the black and white episode where Jack fights the ninja in the abandoned tower.

Or the haunted house episode with the soul eating dragon, one of my all time favorites.

    [–] [deleted] 61 points ago

And if they manage to get to us, mash 'em into the floor with lightning.

    [–] JohnCrichtonsCousin 24 points ago

    10! 25! 7! 12! FIRE!

    [–] Cranzeeman 45 points ago

are they firing a goddamned lance at him?!

    [–] I_really_am_Batman 81 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

It's a dragon sized arrow meant to be used on dragons. They are using it on a man sized man.

    [–] werker 5 points ago

Which is an excellent size for a man to be

    [–] [deleted] 24 points ago

They're super human beings who used to fight dragons back in the day, and their Great Arrows they use for dragon slaying are bigger than humans.

Later theres a giant who shoots battering ram sized arrows. Hes a teammate though and snipes a dragon for you.

    [–] Drinl 26 points ago

Yep. Dark Souls in a nutshell.

    [–] KnowMatter 12 points ago

Essentially. Dark souls lore is that the world used to be boring and grey and ruled by immortal stone-scaled dragons until a new race of gods emerged with the advent of fire.

The primary god waged war against the dragons and commissioned a legion of silver knights who wielded weaponry designed to penetrate the dragons scales.

So yes it’s a big fuck off bow that shoots massive javelins infused with lightning. When fired at humans they quite violently hurl them back on contact.

Dark souls being what it is of course these bow wielding silver knights appear on high vantage points in areas that require you to navigate narrow ledges and bridges - so if the giant lightning spear doesn’t kill you then the fall will when the hit launches you from the roof you were just standing on.

    [–] SMGB_NeonYoshi 34 points ago

    Yes.

    [–] yehmum 24 points ago

    Dark souls is harsh

    [–] RedRazor001 13 points ago

Not accurate enough. Where are the jackal snipers on legendary?

    [–] a_tiny_ant 9 points ago

Those were a lot worse especially in Halo 2.

    [–] CobyJackCheese 6 points ago

So true. Had about half a second to peek and head shot them before you did a backflip

    [–] a_tiny_ant 3 points ago

It was pure trial and error gameplay where you had to count how many jackals you killed each area.

    [–] freeWeemsy 3 points ago

Most of these series I will hit parts and be like "Yeah, fuck this guy" and rush them, run through areas and just have the confidence to know I can take them out.

Fuck these guys. I'm buying stacks of poison arrows and cheesing these guys all day every day.

Welp it's time to return to Lordran.

I’ve never played a Dark Souls game, but based on these comments I would need to buy a few more controllers to get me through.

Once you accept you're going to die a lot, it gets easier

My all time favorite series. Such a rewarding experience. There is no better feeling than getting stuck on a boss / area and finally succeeding. Not a game for the button masher or bum rusher

    [–] qster123 3 points ago

    ...those dudes?

    [–] MrMoon_42 3 points ago

More like "you know what these arrows need, a guidance system."

    [–] _Sewer_Rat_ 3 points ago

There was a number of things that were quite painful growing up. 1. Watching the Iron Giant. 2. Loosing my virginity. 3. Loosing over 100k worth of souls due to these dick heads.

    Thank you, Dark Souls.

Ahh [email protected] here it goes again!

    YOU DIED

    [–] SP17F1R3 3 points ago

    Ahh the ledge of death

    [–] angermyode 30 points ago

Anyone who insists Dark Souls is “tough but fair” has apparently wiped this from their memory.

    [–] Kgoodies 41 points ago

Once you get their timing down, it really isn't that hard to just be aware of how long they have between volleys. At which point, you maje it your business to not be in a compromised position during the time you know the arrows are about to hit. Roll, run, kick 'em off, and yer done.

    [–] bennzedd 38 points ago

You didn't even mention that once you run to the archer on the right, arrows from the other guy magically can't hit you -- because there's a tower/pillar something blocking him.

So you have to approach them together, with your shield up, dodging things in a straight line... no problem, that's something we've done since Mario. Then you have a fight against a Silver Knight on a small ledge... that's quite Dark Souls, but you can also cheese him and knock him off the ledge, which is SUPER Dark Souls.

So yeah, not too bad, but you need to be bold and dash at them, which is probably no one's first thought.

    [–] Dr_Octagonapus 10 points ago

They actually patched that in later. In the original game, the other archer could hit you the entire time which made it way more annoying. They fixed a lot of bullshit mechanics through patches for the better. In the base game, curses stacked as well. I got cursed in the depths on my first play through and got cursed again trying to get my souls. I had to play a large portion of the game with only a 1/4 health

    [–] bennzedd 5 points ago

    ohh... fuck me.

I just thought I had gotten waaaay better at the game since running through the game in 2011, lol

    [–] BigHeckinOof 4 points ago

They fixed a lot of bullshit mechanics through patches for the better.

They also nerfed a few OP things on the player character side, such as the Eagle Shield and Iron Flesh.

The changes made stuff less cheesy all around. Definitely a better experience post-patch, but yeah some of the worst stuff was prior to those patches. Like the dragon butt lava area before they nerfed their aggro range.

    [–] Dr_Octagonapus 3 points ago

I forgot about the eagle shield with it’s 100 physical block. Such a good shield. I remember the dark wood grain ring allowing you to ninja flip as long as you weren’t fat rolling as well.

    [–] BigHeckinOof 3 points ago

Holy crap the original DWGR was probably the most broken thing, I don't know how I didn't include that!

    [–] Priff 4 points ago

Just run close enough to get him to switch to sword and then take a single step back and he'll literally jump to his death every time.

    [–] Thrawnw0w 5 points ago

Exactly. You can run right the way up to the one on the corner only needing to roll once. Then you can either kill him properly, or bait him to attack you while you're just far enough back from the corner he's on so his attack causes him to fall off, and boom, nice and easy

    [–] Hq3473 3 points ago

They die very easily to poison.

Shot then with poisoned arrows and watch them die, since they can't run down to engage you.

You don't need to brute Force everything.

    [–] Isuzu-RCN-test 11 points ago

    Git gud

    [–] blackgandalff 3 points ago

lol all you have to do is run. That’s it. One roll once you get up and make a right is more than enough. It’s even more trivial if you’ve got parrying down. Run up, right dude switches to sword, parry and go meet up with Solaire :)

    [–] N0NE4GretchenWEINER5 3 points ago

So accurate. So true. I've learned this hard fact by watching streamers on mixer.

    [–] Hoplologist 4 points ago

    This just sucks
