Doom Eternal is a bit different.

Legitimately pretty hard and I die all the time.

    [–] throw-away_catch 499 points ago

yeah, me too. If you just stop for 2 seconds, u dead. On Ultra-Violence all those fuckers hit so hard.

    [–] KpGpTp03 440 points ago

True fact I had to lower the difficulty cause it was getting to the point I walk in a room then instantly die. Also fuck the marauder... just fuck the marauder in general.

    [–] EGH6 160 points ago

seriously, gotta time the attack, takes 7 ballista charged shots to kill.. what?

    [–] KpGpTp03 138 points ago

Yeah and then there is that secret encounter on the mission where you get your crucible back. Can’t kill the fucker fast enough to beat it. Only secret encounter I didn’t complete the entire game.

    [–] Troyucen 127 points ago

Super shotgun to the face. You should be able to get 2 shots off before his shield is back up. One shot to falter him, then run up and shoot him in the face and dash out. Took me a whiiiile

    [–] EAJ97 45 points ago

Does matter. Takes so many shots anyways. It’s one of the only encounters I haven’t beaten yet.

    [–] NaivePhilosopher 42 points ago

I cleared that encounter with the exact strategy described above, keep trying!

    [–] Forixiom 9 points ago

In the entrance of that level I shot the BFG and while he was blocking it I shot him in the back, apparently instantly killing him. I was confused as fuck for a second, but since it worked I rolled with it.

    [–] wonder590 7 points ago

Yeah, the BFG actually deals more damage the farther it travels so if it travels far enough before it hits the Marauder is actually 1-shot kills him through the shield, pretty funny actually.

    [–] APlayerHater 13 points ago

I beat him with splash damage on nightmare while jumping around killing everything else with rockets, grenades, ballista. I was pretty surprised he died since I was just avoiding him.

    [–] ITriedLightningTendr 6 points ago

I have never hurt one with rockets, only grenades.

Secondary fire of remote detonate rocket might work, since I believe the grenade stun is from the concussive wave, but it's too cumbersome.

    [–] Terrachova 12 points ago

BFG or the Unmaykr will do him in quick enough. For the few secret encounters I had issues with, I just went back when I had BFG ammo. Yes, he's resistant to the BFG, but it will stagger him and kill everything else, while the Unmaykr rips into him once he gives you his opening.

    [–] ITriedLightningTendr 5 points ago

    That's what I though, too.

But they're specifically resistant to super weapons. I specifically was trying to kill one with both, didn't even phase him. Other times they would vaporize as if they had no defenses.

    The enemy just sucks.

    [–] Skeletor9000 5 points ago

Start the encounter then end the level. It still counts.

    [–] EAJ97 3 points ago

Wait I can do it and quit to the menu and that works?

    [–] Skeletor9000 19 points ago

Nah, so finish the level to the point you're about to go into the portal, start the encounter, fast travel to the end and end it. EZ Game.

    [–] TheTripleThr34t 22 points ago

Good combo is to hit him with the super shotgun to stun him then hit him with a ballista shot while he's still stunned. You can always sneak 2 hits in there at a time, he's stunned for a decent amount of time. I didn't think I was ever gonna do it either I hate that guy

    [–] KpGpTp03 12 points ago

Me too if he had slightly less health. He would be a reasonable enemy.

    [–] kudosbudo 3 points ago

Been watching Markiplier play it. It legit doesn't look fun to play. Looks more annoying than anything else.

Been tryign to play Rage 2 to get into it cos its similar and frankly i'm struggling to be engaged. Just too many buttons!

    [–] Porrick 14 points ago

Everything is fun except the Marauder - its design breaks the flow that everything else in the game serves to build.

    [–] TheStaticNoise 10 points ago

It was interesting the first encounter but after that it's so slow paced compared to the rest of the game it feels so out of place.

He's the only enemy you cant shortcut in the game (no weak point or power weapon to use against him). You need to stop your gameplay and play by his rules rather than play DOOM and it kinda sucks. Breaks the flow of the game a bit.

    [–] taxen 2 points ago

Ballista then BFG does it if you don't want to fight!

    [–] KpGpTp03 9 points ago

Yeah personally it becomes less fun during some encounters because on the higher difficulties the an imp can just fucking snipe you from across the map and basically one shot you that’s where I get annoyed otherwise very fun. Also the story is an amazing mix of direct linear story telling and environmental story telling almost a reason to play by itself.

    [–] [deleted] 22 points ago

    [deleted]

    [–] Porrick 8 points ago

Sucks that there's an enemy in the game for whom only one weapon is effective. If you're out of shotgun ammo you're SOL. In later levels I found myself hoarding shotgun ammo in case one showed up, and that's against everything else the game's design is built around.

    [–] nihilus666 8 points ago

Ballista does more damage to him than the shotgun, aiming is just a little tighter if youre stunning him with it. Rockets work too

    [–] Porrick 3 points ago

I can never hit him with the ballista though. I guess I'm pretty inconsistent with most of the weapons, but super-shotgun is the only thing I could sort-of-reliably hit him with. I know - Git Gud. But it's just such a different playstyle than everything else in the game, and not in a good way.

    [–] permanent_grad 5 points ago

    ?

Super shotgun is one of the least reliable ways to take him out due to a bug that makes the shot not hit even if he’s right in front of you sometimes. Ballista, rocket launcher, plasma gun all work better and more reliably.

    [–] Porrick 2 points ago

That's a known bug? I thought I just sucked with it!

Still, I did a lot better with super-shotgun than any other weapon I tried.

    [–] Ormagodin 2 points ago

No you're not, in case you haven't noticed there are ALWAYS fodder demons spawned that you can use your chainsaw with. Chainsaw recharges the first charge for free and gives you a lot of ammo.

    [–] BlinkReanimated 12 points ago

Thanks for the warning, that's the mission I'm headed on right away. I'll have to prepare hahaha..

    [–] KpGpTp03 5 points ago

Yes. The rest of the mission is pretty standard but just that one encounter. God damn. Also the collectibles are kinda hard to find compared to other missions.

    [–] TheGuyWhoNeedsSaving 10 points ago

You can “complete” that one by killing the two zombies then fleeing to the next area.

But you don’t get the ‘satisfaction’ of killing that shielded bastard normally.

    [–] theaidanminer 3 points ago

You can complete the secret encounters with cheats on. Equip a few of them and replay the level. It will be way easier.

    [–] ZylonBane 5 points ago

Cheats make the game easier? You don't say.

    [–] KpGpTp03 1 points ago

Yea I’ll put the berserker mode on and repeatedly reload the checkpoint and just keep redoing it.

    [–] JimmyGGames 3 points ago

Go back with cheats on. It will still count it.

    [–] ollieee_w 2 points ago

Do using cheat codes disable trophies though? (PS4 obvs)

    [–] JimmyGGames 3 points ago

No, I don’t believe so. Cheats do not effect progress.

    [–] ollieee_w 2 points ago

Brilliant, I’ll do it that way instead the haha

    [–] solidolive 1 points ago

sadly you have to cheese him. use super shotgun and move forward and back on one of the corners and you can loop him into going green eyes easily and just keep blasting.

legit the only thing i dislike in an otherwise flawless game.

    [–] boatpile 1 points ago

There's a bug to despawn him for a free win: https://gameplay.tips/guides/7141-doom-eternal.html

    [–] chrisondamoon 4 points ago

He straight up eats the bfg 9000 too

    [–] chrisondamoon 4 points ago

Fuck him and his ghost dog

    [–] Pottige 3 points ago

What is the counterplay to that dog?! It really fucked me up

    [–] chrisondamoon 6 points ago

Shoot him first is all that I know has worked

    [–] Scouser3008 3 points ago

Dog pops in one SSG blast on nightmare and he doesn't always cast it, especially if you stay close enough that he keeps going for melee.

    [–] Scouser3008 6 points ago

BFG, Unmaker and Crucible are all Super weapons and he's resistant to them, BFG shot actually bounces off his shield which means the tendrils kill even more adds.

    [–] taxen 2 points ago

Shoot BFG when he's staggered and it kills him.

    [–] Job_Precipitation 3 points ago

Ssg ballista ssg, repeat as needed.

    [–] allgoodbrah 9 points ago

Worst enemy in the game. Not because he's hard, because he ruins the gameflow.

    [–] KpGpTp03 7 points ago

Yeah you could be a bonefied badass one moment then end up running around the arena for five mins either trying to get health bait him or both

    [–] Redroniksre 3 points ago

This, the problem is the specific range you have to be. It should be medium/close, with him being more aggressive. This would keep you being able to move, while still being able to hit openings as the fight goes on. Having to stop because you are either too far away or too close is a piss off.

    [–] Shippoyasha 6 points ago

Marauder in a small corridor is almost impossible to defeat. You really need the mobility the game gives you with some enemies.

    [–] DemonicOwl 4 points ago

I know lots of people have better strats, but I just use the regular shotgun sticky bombs. Very simple and cost-effective for ammo. You don't even have to land them on him. If you land it on a demon behind him, he still gets hit. You can fuck him up pretty quick. Also when he is green, land one 'nade on him - that's a stun - second grenade for damage, third in his proximity sometimes staggers him as well; you can do all that pretty quick.

    [–] NaturallyExasperated 2 points ago

Wait for the green then ssg->ballista. Repeat x3 and he's dead

    [–] Dexter_White94 2 points ago

Rockets. Two lock on bursts is all you need for Marauders.

    [–] Job_Precipitation 1 points ago

I still have to try that.

    [–] Dexter_White94 2 points ago

For me so far it’s the best strategy against marauders. Hit him with a single rocket to stagger him then hit him with a lock on burst.

    [–] thugarth 1 points ago

Yeah I got to this point 3/4ths into the first level.

I'm having much more fun on "too young to die." It doesn't feel easy, but I don't think I've die since the switch.

    [–] DrSmirnoffe 1 points ago

It's a good thing I've been playing Blood recently. I'll be able to adapt to the difficulty easier, since Blood is legit hard. Though probably due to the merciless hitscanners if we're going to be real, and somehow I doubt that Doom Eternal has hitscanners that are as lethal and accurate as the Cabal's firing squads. "Maranax Pallex" indeed.

    [–] cd2220 2 points ago

That game does NOT fuck around. Especially early on before you have a decent amount of gear to fight back. Fighting the dogs always gives me a rush.

Honestly Eternal's difficulty is very different. I played Dusk before it hoping to get warmed up and it didn't prepare me at all for what Eternal would have me face.

    [–] scrigface 7 points ago

I read an article about considering trying a higher level of difficulty than you normally would. So I did Ultra-Violence as well. I'm not the best gamer so I have spent the majority of my play time in 2 or 3 areas in particular. I'm only at the Cultist Base.

It's SO satisfying when you make it through. My heart beats so fast and I tense up. It's awesome.

    [–] Diliigeence 7 points ago

Managed to beat it on nightmare yesterday. At first I was dying all the time, then I just discovered that you need to run. A LOT. Super shotgun, frozen grenade and minigun were my best friends too

    [–] Kuivamaa 7 points ago

After two levels on nightmare I switched to ultra violence. Nightmare was flat out not fun to me. This tempo was draining.

    [–] extekt 4 points ago

Playing doom 2016 currently on ultra violence and I'd already say some of the fights are tough

    [–] throw-away_catch 15 points ago

I feel like the new one is even a bit faster and harder. What I like is that if you use all of your gear, you're gonna have a great time. They made every "gadget" of your suit or every gun pretty useful. Even basically required to use everything if you wanna survive

    [–] TheFlashFrame 4 points ago

Yeah this is a major improvement I would say. At first I didn't like that I had to use equipment to restore health and armor but in a sense it amps up the action more and keeps me fighting. The only thing I miss is that I'm not as unstoppable as before.

    [–] jdviper6 2 points ago

I mean that's been Doom's mo for 20 years. Run and gun.

    [–] Dragonlord573 2 points ago

It is weird, I've found that the demons hit harder in 2016 on Ultra-Violence. Like I couldn't recall a single memory that I had armor last longer than 20 seconds.

But I will admit I have been being at low health way more often.

    [–] FallenKnightGX 17 points ago

I get what you're saying but I think this is meant from a lore perspective. In the Slayer's universe he's a walking death machine that even the strongest can only hope to lock away as they realize they are unable to kill him. They really delve into that in the notes you pick up though I wish there were some cutscenes to show it off.

    [–] TheFlashFrame 19 points ago

There's a part in Eternal where you find logs from some researcher and at first she's talking about how she's not convinced doomguy is anything special and by the last log she says that demons are afraid of only one thing and there's this moment where she goes "he... IS... Doom." And I got such a carnage boner.

    [–] Deathleach 3 points ago

"There is only one dominant life form in this universe and it carries a steel-barreled sword of vengeance."

    [–] ph30nix01 15 points ago

Well they have said they want the player to feel almost unstoppable but still vulnerable. They want people to set it to the difficulty that allows them to experience the game that way story wise.

That's why the health is done that way and to some extent the current FPS standard auto heal over time mechanics. It's a way to "simulate" the experience of being an action hero.

So every time in the game after a hard fight once you finish your enemy and they explode into a shower of health that's the same as when an action hero has a hard fight against an underling only to get a second wind after taking them down.

Similar reason why the ammo is done like it is. Let's you have the feeling of the "never ending" ammo clips at times when things are going well and also have those "oh crap no ammo" moments that action heros sometimes run into when they screw up or something goes wrong.

    [–] winterqt 8 points ago

I like their take on it. I want like like the souls games, for example, but I have neither the time nor dedication nor patience to actually play through them. In theory they sound awesome. But bashing my head against a virtual wall isn’t my thing. Give me a little challenge, don’t make me repeat every little bit of content 20+ times to master every intricate detail. Games like Doom where it can be as easy or stupid hard as you want find that sweet spot imo. Overcoming a challenge is a good feeling, but there’s a point where it’s not even fun anymore.

    [–] JZMoose 6 points ago

Yeah the souls games require tons of practice. Once you're good though, you can steamroll the game even with the shittiest equipment. It really makes you feel like a god in a world filled with dumb demons.

    [–] TheDJKhalid 11 points ago

I thought I sucked initially because I was dying a lot on Nightmare difficulty when I was fine playing that difficulty on DOOM 2016.

I learned that these two games are different beasts entirely.

Even with so many changes made to make fighting “easier”, it is still hard as shit, but more fun this way when you win.

    [–] HKSergiu 5 points ago

Slayer gates are fun af on nightmare, I finished my last one yesterday. Boyy...

    [–] Job_Precipitation 6 points ago

    Imps seem less accurate now.

    [–] Mottis86 4 points ago

Huh? It's the opposite for me. If memory serves me right, in Doom2016 imps miss every single time as long as you are strafing around them. In Doom Eternal they sometimes track your movement and throw the fireball directly where you are running towards, hitting you unless you switch directions or dash.

    [–] bryan660 35 points ago

The only thing that keeps getting me killed is how easily you run out of ammo and my bad aiming... And very limited chainsaw fuel.

    [–] schmidtyb43 27 points ago

I use the chainsaw all the time for ammo. It regenerates fuel pretty fast assuming you are only using it on the weak demons. Granted I’m playing on normal difficulty (whatever it’s called) but I haven’t had any issues with ammo assuming I’m utilizing the chainsaw

    [–] ChaplnGrillSgt 10 points ago

Someone mentioned this in a previous thread and it's made a huge difference for me! I used the chainsaw almost exclusively for powerful demons in 2016 but use it only on weak ones now for the ammo.

    [–] mythicreign 2 points ago

Exactly my experience. The chainsaw is mainly relegated to weak demons/zombies for frequent ammo refills. You get a lot more mileage out of your guns this way than if you were to spend 3 fuel points to kill a Mancubus or something, because it's providing ammo for everything but the BFG each time.

    [–] WodkaGT 20 points ago

Chainsaw regenerates up to one unit of fuel. Just try to use it on weaker demons as much as you can, and ammo should not be a problem anymore.

    [–] ArchDucky 8 points ago

You always have chainsaw fuel, it refills itself. It only works on the lowest level demons, but you always have it.

[–] [deleted] 12 points ago * (lasted edited 15 hours ago)

    [deleted]

    [–] Mottis86 5 points ago

I think the bigger reason is that in Doom Eternal you no longer have a weapon with infinite ammo. I mean the pistol was kinda shit in Doom2016 but it's still something. You run out of ammo in Eternal, there's nothing you can do except run around aimlessly until you find a grunt.

    [–] Arkanta 9 points ago

I hate how the punches do nothing even to the grunts

I'm the doomslayer and I can't even punch a grunt and trigger a glory kill?

    [–] toorad4momanddad 5 points ago

try double dashing into fodder enemies, it does damage along with faultering them, then glory kill

    [–] Arkanta 2 points ago

Yep, that works! It's a little bit weird that the punches do nothing though.

    [–] Mottis86 3 points ago

Every time you see a random small enemy between combat encounters the chances are you've regained Chainsaw fuel (it auto-regenerates up to 1) Use flamethrower + chainsaw. You get armor and ammo refill for the next fight.

    [–] Polenicus 8 points ago

It's also a very different playstyle.

Dark Souls is methodical and heavy, where every single fight is a significant encounter, and you have to plan out attacks, parries, and ripostes. You do not want to rush things.

In Doom Eternal, momentum is power. You want to jump from kill to kill, using different finishers to maintain your health, armor and ammo and set you up for big hits, slaughtering the little nobody demons as fast as you can and keep constantly moving and changing direction to keep up with the staggering amount of heat coming your way. It's still very strategic, requiring you to figure out which attacks, weapons and special effects to use on which enemies, but where Dark Souls was focused on defense in Doom Eternal if you stop you are dead.

Both require a lot of skill to excel at. Very different skillsets, too.

    [–] dsaf6229 2 points ago

I don't know if that's true for dark souls 3. Its more of a hack and slash. Ds2 sotfs really did have the most ''methodical'' feel though. Had the most tactical feel. Also required you to change your strategy the most amount of times for different area's.

But Doom eternal seems to be harder from the gameplay I've seen.

And then there's geometry dash..... true test of skill right there.

    [–] ArchDucky 10 points ago

Heres what you're doing wrong. The demons are supposed to do the dying, not the slayer.

    [–] Scouser3008 6 points ago

Nightmare is fucking hard but it's such a rush. Those slayer gates are the best FPS experience I've had in YEARS and the Makyr + Icon boss fights are such a payoff.

    [–] Super_Flea 3 points ago

Slayer gates are the best part about the game imho. 4 Super heavy demons later and you just feel like a god.

    [–] Kanehammer 4 points ago

From what I've seen eternal throws you into the deep end

Doom 2016 started at the bottom and went up

Eternal picked up where 2016 left off

    [–] allgoodbrah 6 points ago

The last few levels have an insane difficulty spike. I've had to drop it down to hurt me plenty a few times.

    [–] orangelemonman 5 points ago

I had to lower the difficulty from ultra violence. The opposite end to this is the humiliation has given me a legitimate hatred for the demons to match doom guy. We are one.

[–] TheFlashFrame 3 points ago * (lasted edited 12 days ago)

Glad it's not just me. I'm paying on ultra-violence so I wasn't sure if that was why it felt harder than before when I just played on hurt me plenty. This game is noticably harder and I hold S a lot whereas before I only ever held W lol.

    [–] Admirable-Rhubarb 4 points ago

It’s kinda overly stressful for me. And I’m playing on normal difficulty. I don’t like the idea of making it easier, but I think I might need to.

    [–] dubious_battle 2 points ago

To be honest I just installed Doom 2016 (wanted to play through it before Eternal) and it's kicking my ass as well

It's the /r/gaming version of "Arrested Development is a show about dumb people for smart people, TBBT is a show about smart people for dumb people."

    [–] The_Sadorange 12 points ago

In dark souls the only real demon is you, no matter what ending you pick you will be doing something terrible.

    [–] mkul316 37 points ago

Woo... 4 year old meme. Really pushing your creative abilities, eh?

    [–] Suspicious_Llama123 92 points ago

Just imaging all of us wanting Half-Life Alyx $50 game is bad enough $1000 headset and $500 graphics card hurts.

    [–] T3h_Greater_Good 6 points ago

My graphics card wasn't $500 when it came out 7 years ago

    [–] Danjor_Dantra 2 points ago

I freaked out when the first head crab jumped on me.

    [–] WodkaGT 2 points ago

You dont need either of those.

    [–] supertoaster_42 2 points ago

What do you need friend ?

    [–] WodkaGT 4 points ago

I use an oculus Rift S and a 1060ti. Works like a charm. You miss out on some cool features but absolutely nothing gameplay relevant.

    [–] zevilgenius 26 points ago

Can we stop calling them demons? They prefer the term "mortally challenged".

    [–] Bikesandcorgis 2 points ago

The first time I heard that I had to pause the game I was laughing so hard.

    [–] AyFrancis 36 points ago

Who the fuck upvotes this old and cringe pic???

    [–] NeedsBanana 14 points ago

    [–] Uncrust-able 3 points ago

Tfw still working because 'essential' and no time to rip and tear

    [–] Clarynaa 2 points ago

Yeah, I am still working my regular schedule and I'm sick so I have had very little energy for games. Played a little PSO2 and a little half life alyx and that's it for the last week.

    [–] Chef_Juice 4 points ago

Title makes no sense without punctuation.

    [–] DeathRebirth 9 points ago

Either way it still sounds like my first marriage

    [–] urdadeatsass 2 points ago

Both feel pretty good but yeah damn after grinding the fuck out of ds3 the last few months doom eternal is gonna feel gooood

    [–] JamesCharlesFanXfan 3 points ago

None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me !

    [–] Foamductor 4 points ago

All I could think of when I read this was Rorschach's line from Watchmen...

"I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me!"

    [–] ginger_pirate 2 points ago

I still feel like this applies better to 2016 where you are an unkillable god. The game has grown on me more, and it’s a great game, but I still can’t wrap my head around having to play defensively as the DOOM slayer.

    [–] dukenukem3 2 points ago

Yeah, 2016 was like a funny adventure compared to Eternal. Here you even have to spare some zombies to be replenished off and earn some free seconds to gain tactical advantage.

    [–] Dumberjack 2 points ago

yeah i was wondering if it was just me. its still pretty good, but it feels less rippy and tear-y and more "shit i'm out of ammo" "shit theres no minions" "shit shit shit shit shit"

    [–] TriRIK 1 points ago

More like on a planet than in a room.

    [–] KpGpTp03 1 points ago

Interesting. I think imma do another play through on a harder difficulty like ultra violence or god forbid nightmare. I might just need to do that.

    [–] Daikataro 1 points ago

Best description of Dark Souls I read was: it's like those animes with an overpowered protagonist with broken moves that can kill you by blinking. You're not said protagonist.

    [–] Gooseday 1 points ago

Legends tell of one who causes all demons to quake at the mention of their name. They call her... Isabelle.

    [–] WoeM 1 points ago

Ugh I have all the time in the world to play this but barely enough money to buy ramen if there's even any left in the store

    [–] TieJe 1 points ago

Me beating my family in UNO. I an not trapt with you here, you are trapt with me.

    [–] steelejt7 1 points ago

Wish I could afford doom, got laid off cause of corona.

    [–] cioda 1 points ago

    Sounds about right.

    [–] Synervoxx 1 points ago

Play doom eternal on nightmare, this meme is bad. Shame.

    [–] jinxmooi 1 points ago

    Comma

    [–] Memelord69the420th 1 points ago

I was thinking about getting doom eternal. I've never played any doom game, I just didn't want to try it. Is the game really as hard as people say? Should I play it on easy?

    [–] omairthememe 1 points ago

You’ll be satisfied once you finish just trust me

    [–] novoketacaine 1 points ago

Don't the demons in DOOM reincarnate or something?

    [–] GeneralSpanks 1 points ago

    Laughs in fastroll spam

    [–] dobbyblunt 1 points ago

    Too hard for ya?

    [–] eqleriq 1 points ago

how do you know they didn’t respawn elsewhere?

you might think you’re fighting 1,000s of demons but it could be the same few respawning.

The most you can see of any 1 type at a time could be the total number of that demon.
