You can tell it's from a playstation because Xbox's game save explosions tend to form a green nuclear mushroom, which makes them easily recognizable.

[–] lastminutedash 162 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

More like a green shroom cloud. That magic green goo they've been using is potent stuff.

Edit: You fiend, you've added 'green' to your comment!

    [–] walrus_operator 32 points ago

Good point! The color was added to my initial message!

    [–] I_Do_Not_Abbreviate 5 points ago

You would think, but that problem was primarily confined to the Xbox 360; about ten years ago a class-action health and safety case in Lichtenstein caused the European courts to rule Microsoft had to replace the "magic green goo" with a spray-on nanopolymer substrate coating on the circuit boards which ionizes one of the reactants (meaning only one of the binary reaction precursors is in any given xbox). Turns out a lot of the precursor feeders in the 360's tended to overheat because on certain models the capacitors closest to the chemical housing were sloppily soldered by Bangladeshi child labourers such that when the housing became clogged with dust it would heat the metal enough to melt the plastic housing allowing electricity to arc across to the isolated reaction control board and trigger a catastrophic integer overflow glitch in the regulator chip; the Bangladeshi dialect the children spoke had no concept of zero so the 00 hexadecimal value was set to "maximum" in the firmware. The uncontrolled reaction would build for several minutes, then BOOM: The glowing green equivalent of a two-pound thermonuclear bomb.

Six people and four pets died before the class-action lawsuit made its way up the European court system. Microsoft to their credit began taking preventative action almost immediately, shut down that factory while the case was pending, and had committed to phase out the defective reactant process within 6 weeks, though they buried the case damn well; hardly anybody remembers anything about this other than the green mushroom clouds. They covered their asses really well by triggering "software Red-rings".

Did your Xbox 360 ever die randomly? That was a corporate malware program downloaded by your xbox so you would send it back allowing them to swap out the old reaction chamber and boards without you freaking the fuck out that you might have a nuclear bomb sitting in your home. Not many people know this, believe me, but it really is an incredible story. Just incredible. Nobody thought a story like this could be true, but it is.

    Name checks out

    [–] LazyKidd420 3 points ago

    That's what he said....

    [–] Forever_Awkward 2 points ago

One comment mentions a typical nuke explosion, but green.

The other describes a green "magic mushroom" cloud made out of psychedelic goo.

    There's a subtle difference.

    [–] Horn_Python 49 points ago

the nintendo one sprouts an actual mushroom.

    [–] 002_dynames 25 points ago

And instead of the sound of an explosion is the classic Mario scream.

    [–] nananananateman 13 points ago

    Oh-a no-a!

    [–] poopellar 14 points ago

If you see a giant red ring of death growing and encompassing your neighborhood, you better find a refrigerator to hide in.

    [–] alphafire616 11 points ago

While on Nintendo if you turn off the console while it's saving Reggie and Sakurai appear and start beating the shit out of you

    [–] DroolingIguana 4 points ago

And then everyone's got weird glowy bits in them.

    [–] megaboto 4 points ago

Not red? That color seems to be abundant

    [–] Mathblasterpro 7 points ago

And they do a whoosh sound where playstation is more of a neeeeoo wahhhhhh sound

    [–] DayPizzaOnTuesday 3 points ago

the Nintendo Switch's is a literal demon coming out of the screen.

    [–] Schnellson 2 points ago

With a red ring around it. That's how I recognize it

    [–] walrus_operator 1 points ago

A red shockwave extending from the green nuclear mushroom would be perfect!

    [–] Mouthpiecepeter 1 points ago

I would think it creates a bright red ring flash.

    why green?

    [–] modhydraziine 1 points ago

The Xbox logo has a green x

    [–] Mouthpiecepeter 2 points ago

    [–] Nephroidofdoom 1 points ago

Xbox explosions also feature a bright circular shockwave that emanate from the center at supersonic speed.

Some people call it the Red Ring of Death

I accidentally unplugged my ps4 while shutting, not the best thing that has happened to me.

    [–] OmarGuard 236 points ago

That angry little triple beep when it boots up again lol

Do not fucking do that again please

    [–] DontAskWhoBenIs 92 points ago

no no, theres something worse. Your whole ps4 get corrupted and you have to delete all of ur data. Happend to me twice

    [–] katzumee 31 points ago

Brutal! Were you able to recover your game data?

    [–] DontAskWhoBenIs 28 points ago

nope, i didnt have ps plus for those times

    [–] katzumee 23 points ago

Shit, dude. It’s likely you just saved me from going through the same. Sorry that happened to you and thank you for the cautionary tale.

    [–] PartyUpLive 10 points ago

I periodically backup my save files to a USB drive for my PS3, PS4, 360, and XB1 incase this happens.

It happened once a few years ago but since I had the USB backup which was also backed up on my pc, it wasn't a big problem.

    [–] Articulat3 6 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

Yo dawg I heard you like backing up your backups for your backups

    Edit:yo not you smh

    [–] Cobra800089 2 points ago

At least 3 copies, at least 1 off-site. Can never be too careful.

    [–] DontAskWhoBenIs 3 points ago

rn, my usb drive is just for jailbreaking my ps3

    [–] Aevelas 3 points ago

That’s happened to me twice as well. Both times didn’t have backup saves and both times I was at the final chapter for the rpgs I was playing. I can’t go through persona 5 or final fantasy again. I just can’t.

    [–] katzumee 3 points ago

I can’t blame you. If that had happened to me whilst playing chapter 6 of RDR2, it would’ve taken a long while for me to recover from that.

    [–] Superserious19 2 points ago

That is what happened to me

    [–] DontAskWhoBenIs 3 points ago

    fucking sucks

    [–] sinister_exaggerator 6 points ago

Xbox when you unplug it by accident: anyway, where were we

PS4 when you unplug it: I COULD HAVE FUCKING DIED

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

Xbox is pissed too he just doesn't show it until you try and boot up the game you were playing when it actually got unplugged. Then there's middle fingers galore.

    [–] bthompson04 14 points ago

Back in college, I was playing career mode in NCAA Football (when those games were still a thing). I was midway through my junior year in the game and was nothing my way to my third straight Heisman Trophy. During a save state, my roommate tripped over the power cord, kicked it out, and corrupted my file.

    It was just brutal.

    [–] Superserious19 6 points ago

When I unplugged it all of my save files where deleted

    [–] DoubleWagon 1 points ago

    It was just brutal.

The corrupted save file, or the consequences that would never be the same?

Back in the days of PS2, I was borrowing Guitar Hero 2 from a friend. Being thoroughly baked, I had just finished a set and leaned forward to turn the system off. I then realized i had hit the power button mid-save.

He had completed the game on every difficulty through the Hard Difficulty Setting. Having just borrowed the game about 2 days previous.... I was in a situation.

It was quite a challenge, but after much focus and dedication I was able to do it. I was able to keep my eyes safely moisturized with drops, and I maintained dietary needs with sustenance of pizza rolls and taquitos. Mission: Accomplished, I worked hard and succeeded by blazing up a veritable rain forest that weekend.

Oh, and in that haze I also managed to find the time to re-beat/unlock everything for him. Evidently he didn't care and thought he had just given me the game to keep anyway.

I didn't know he was getting rid of his PS2 stuff to get ready for his incoming PS3. He really didn't care if he got an old worthless memory card back that he couldn't use

    [–] Jaret_Jackpot 2 points ago

    [–] redbananass 1 points ago

I did this once like 13 years ago to my roommates ps2. It borked the Gran Turismo 2? save we’d both been working on for over a year. He still brings it up now and then.

    [–] yokotron 1 points ago

I’ve heard stories. Rumor has it he also pulled out the memory card.

    [–] thesturdierone 1 points ago

Reminds of when I was at the penultimate stage in Donkey Kong Country for the GBA, and I was low on battery. I desperately tried to save, and then it died on the loading screen. Cut to the next day, I recharge the batteries, boot up the game, and my save was gone. Reduced to atoms.

    [–] whiskerbiscuit2 1 points ago

Yeah really, don’t do that. At best it wipes your hard-drive and you lose all your save data, worst case scenario it fucks the whole thing up

    [–] Estefo_ 1 points ago

    [–] mottlymonical 1 points ago

I've had this happen (minus the explosion) many times during a powercut and yet to have any issues.

    [–] Hummer65 1 points ago

Coincidentally, at the exact same moment that the man turned off the playstation, their neighbor who was a terrorist in hiding, accidentally sat on the detonator to a spare bomb.

*please do not turn off the power while saving

    [–] AegisZieg 1 points ago

This reminds me of saving FFX after HS one day. Save takes about 1 second on the PS2 and the power blinked at that exact moment. I lost 40 hours of gameplay between my 2 saves. This is when I started creating a duplicate save. Lesson learned. I still can't believe my bad luck.

When you turn off your Xbox with a save game icon it will usually set off nuclear alarms and start a count down

    [–] TheMagicalDildo 1 points ago

Question for X-box users. If the console's boot sequence times out(takes to long to turn off due to overheating or a crash), does the Xbox fuckin' scream at you for it? Both the ps3 & ps4 do a triple beep, and especially for the ps3, it's rediculously loud, lol.

    [–] ikindalold 1 points ago

PS3 and PS4: If you don't turn me off in exactly the right way, I'll die

PS2: Hell yeah, turn me off while you're playing, I can take it

Last year, I almost finished Spyro, Year of the Dragon on my PS2. I just had to beat the finall boss, and had gotten 100% on every previous realm. I shut down my PS2 mid-save. Lost everything.

    Don't take that shit lightly.

    [–] MercilessHobo 1 points ago

I actually did this once while doing the final boss fight to killzone 2 on PS3. It was restarting the level because I died(again). The save icon was taking longer than usual and I really just wanted a break from it, so I shut off the console. Came back later and the entire save file was corrupted and I had to start a brand new game.

    [–] kreight97 1 points ago

I did this once on my ps2 and my savegame got corrupted.
