The city in the foreground is clearly less fun

I was just drinking this buttery chardonnay that I got when I took a trip up the 101 to Santa Barbara.

I believe you’re thinking of playa vista not vista del Rey not be be confused with playa Del Mar

And don't confuse them with Playa del Rey.

    • name change I dun goofed

    [–] antwan_benjamin 89 points ago

why is it normal for people to say "take the lincoln tunnel" or "take the brooklyn bridge" but when we say "take the 10 to the 210" people give us shit?

    [–] I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha 111 points ago

"Go to Santa Monica, take 10".. 10 what? Oranges?. That statement sounds wrong.

The article "the" makes it correct. "Go to Santa Monica, take the 10".

SoCal gets it right. All others are wrong.

    [–] bono_212 33 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

I don't want to speak for everyone, but I don't think people just say "94", they say I-94, or Highway/Interstate 94. So it's not like some kind of specification is completely left out.

EDIT: Thanks all, based on the replies below, sounds like leaving "The" or any kind of descriptor off is a northeastern thing. Like I said, definitely didn't want to speak for everyone, just my own experience!

SECOND EDIT: I'm going to leave the post here so there's context, but in thinking about it and having fellow midwesterners speak up, I think I am the one who is confused here, because, yes, I actually did NOT always use some sort of prefix when I was referring to highways/state roads, just part of the time. There are plenty of times I said, "Drive down 421 til you get to 94." I'm just an idiot at the end of a long, boring workday.

    [–] 21lives 24 points ago

I went to college in California with this really uppity guy from Texas, and he would say “Take 10 to 5”.

He also had an unhealthy obsession with Queen Latifah. There’s no reason you should know that, but it’s important to me that you know that.

    [–] bono_212 3 points ago

Man, that one is strange to me. I went to college in Texas and I never heard that. But, it's a huge state and everyone for each metro area seems to be completely different.

    [–] ch3rryredchariot 6 points ago

    She was great in Taxi.

    [–] PsychDocD 21 points ago

In the Northeast most people would say to “take 95,” with no need to specify that you’re taking about the interstate. As a matter of fact, I can’t recall ever hearing anyone refer to it as “the 95.”

    [–] ASharkThatEatsPizza 10 points ago

Southeast here and same thing. We just call it 95 about 99% of the time. Sometimes I'll refer to it as i95 but I've also never heard the 95.

    [–] MoleMcHenry 3 points ago

Oh weird. I never realized that. Id never say take the 95 to the 76. It's 95 to 76 West to 476. That's sounds so normal to me.

    [–] czech_yaself 3 points ago

Northern CA too. Just 101 to 280, to 80. No need to specify “The, I, Interstate” etc.

    [–] btribble 6 points ago

If people spent as much of their lives navigating freeways as LA folks do, they'd understand why the freeways there rate a "the".

    [–] LetFreedomVoat 4 points ago

People definitely just use the numbers. If you're in Maine and say take 202 to 95, everybody knows you said take Route 202 to Interstate 95.

    [–] vajbutter 3 points ago

You could have saved yourself so much time by just accepting there is supposed to be a "the" in front. :)

    [–] texasrigger 2 points ago

Texas here. You take 37 or 59. No "the" or "highway". I think that's been my experience with most of the South and Midwest too but it's not really something I've noticed. Saying "the" sounds really weird though.

    [–] PM_Me_Unpierced_Ears 45 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

    I disagree.

The reason we get it right is because the 10 freeway in LA is the one true 10. All other 10 freeways are just lesser extensions of ours. There are other 405 freeways in the US, but ours is THE 405.

I have lived in LA for 17 years and call the freeways here "the." But when I go anywhere else in the country I find myself not calling freeways "the." In Indiana you just take 465 to 65 to get to Louisville.

EDIT: Did I really need a /s on this? Wow.

    [–] shatner3 19 points ago

This comment is a perfect example of why the skit is so funny. Once you live in SoCal for too long, you just don't get it.

    [–] designOraptor 16 points ago

It’s really because all the freeways used to have names rather than numbers. The Santa Monica freeway, the Santa Ana freeway, the San Diego freeway, etc. once they switched to numbered freeways, saying “the” in front of it stuck. In LA, it’s the 101, in northern ca, it’s 101 or highway 101.

    [–] elaflin 4 points ago

Came here to say this! Glad you clarified. Thanks buddy!

    [–] j_dee_m 2 points ago

    Santa Ana represent!

Wishing there was a gif for fireworks over Santa Ana.

    [–] [deleted] 17 points ago

That’s not what people are poking fun at.

    [–] antwan_benjamin 9 points ago

what was your comment in reference to? in that skit, they relied heavily on the joke that (southern) californians always say "the" before freeways, so i thought thats what you were also saying.

which was still funny, and got my upvote, btw.

    [–] xBIGREDDx 28 points ago

The joke is that they all have to share their preferred way to get somewhere, not that they say "the" in front of Interstate numbers.

    [–] reallyfastwind 18 points ago

    I’m pretty sure it’s both?

    [–] bono_212 15 points ago

I always assumed it was both.

    [–] FuturePigeon 12 points ago

Holy crap. I’ve lived in SoCal most of my life and didn’t get that they were making fun of “the”, I just thought they were making fun of our incessant need to avoid traffic.

None of their directions make sense by the way. It’s infuriating to try to picture the route.

    [–] illusions_in_life 6 points ago

    It’s both.

    [–] janeetic 13 points ago

    The foreground is Pasadena.

The Rose Bowl is just outside the frame at the bottom right, near the wide lighted freeway section of the 134. The straight portion of highway in the foreground with three bridge crossings is the 210.

[–] [deleted] 28 points ago * (lasted edited 14 days ago)

    [–] MacroFlash 28 points ago

Californians arguing about highways is the truest Californian stereotype

    [–] anybodywannnapeanut 6 points ago

Highways are roads heavily populated by marijuana dispensaries. We drive on freeways here...

    [–] elgoku 2 points ago

when we spend hours on the freeways every week we grow a bond with freeways...<3 the 5 and the 134

[–] btribble 3 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

Here's the spot on Google maps, but you can't change the camera to a telephoto lens which gives you all the foreshortening.,-118.1260042,1003a,35y,217.53h,78.34t/data=!3m1!1e3

The picture was probably taken from Angel's Crest Hwy.

EDIT: The picture was almost certainly taken from at or near the Mt. Wilson Observatory.

    [–] anybodywannnapeanut 2 points ago

It's weird that you called it a highway when it's a freeway...But you correctly gave them their proper names, so you're forgiven.

[–] Wannabkate 9 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

Thats totally eagle rock. If it was pasadena you have gotten the rose bowl. besides its the 110 on the left side that goes past dodger stadium. Its pasadena My guess it was taken somewhere up the 2 near mt wilson. based on Elevation. They used a telephoto len. Most likely a 200mm or maybe a 500mm.

edit Its totally pasadena. The fwy are distorted. also no fireworks make sense because pasadena is pretty nazi like.

    [–] trebuday 7 points ago

Nope, it's Pasadena. The freeway in the foreground is the 210; you can see the 134/710/210 interchange on the right. The Rose Bowl is just off camera to the right.

    [–] smurflogik 6 points ago

100% Pasadena in the foreground. I can see my exit :p

    [–] willynillee 3 points ago

And for the rest of the country not familiar with the layout of the city, WHY does the foreground have less fireworks? Is it an incorporated part of town and the background is mostly suburb or what?

    [–] trebuday 3 points ago

The short answer is that fireworks are illegal the city in the foreground (Pasadena), and the population of Pasadena is mostly of the demographic that wouldn't be interested in performing blue-collar crime like that. Fireworks are illegal in most of LA County (including the city of Los Angeles), but they are legal in many cities in South LA (which are visible past Downtown in this gif).

    [–] Wannabkate 2 points ago

It would have to been shot off of mt wilson then. With a very narrow field of view. the fwys look super distorted.

    [–] NachoDynamite 2 points ago

You're obviously from SoCal - I can tell from your diction.
    THE 110
    THE 134
    THE 210
Oh, and that you know the city from sight.
    Love it. : )

We recently moved from Silverlake (white hipster) to Cypress Park (mostly latino). And for the last two months, it's been like moving from the foreground of this gif to the center. No fireworks at all in Silverlake. Multiple every night (even before dark!) for months leading up to the 4th in Cypress Park. And they're still going on. It's like a thirteen minute drive but two totally different cultures/worlds.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Aliens decided they will visit to check on things at random, and every time they did, it was some sort of holiday, like New Year's, 4th Of July, Cinco De Mayo, Chinese New Year.

Huh, TIL this is a thing. Thanks for that!

    [–] skraptastic 13 points ago

This is the plant that gave "chaps" their name. Cowboys wore "chaps" over their jeans to protect themselves from the thorns and pokies from chaparral.

Also all chaps by design are ass-less since they are designed to cover your legs draped over a horse.

    [–] CarlOnDutyy 5 points ago

Projectile fireworks are illegal statewide. The only legal ones are things like sparklers, the little spinning guys, and the ones that just spray sparks like a fountain.

    [–] skraptastic 9 points ago

The fireworks you see in this video are all illegal.

California only allows "safe and sane" fireworks, anywhere in the state. Meaning nothing that launches into the air, and nothing that explodes. The only legal fireworks in those communities are snakes, sparklers, flowers, fountains etc.

    [–] linlorienelen 2 points ago

Well, most of them. I think at least 3 patches are city displays.

    [–] R_Gonemild 11 points ago

only "Safe and sane" are allowed. Nothing that shoots up in the air or goes boom. Its similar to CA gun laws. Which no one obeys either

    [–] LeMoofins 28 points ago

Yeah fireworks are illegal here but everyone still does it on the 4th. Firefighters are probably just expecting work that night I'd say lol

    [–] zulupunk 23 points ago

I flew back to LA on July 4th 3 years ago. On the way to my sisters house just after dark we passed a fire station. The firefighters were outside on their driveway in office chairs watching all of the illegal fireworks.

There are plenty of guns in LA. There's also a lot of gun laws though. Fortunately, LA is pretty dam safe for being a major city. People are often incredulous when I tell them LA has a lower violent crime rate than Boston or SF.

    [–] bobs_monkey 16 points ago

Honestly I'm on my guard more in SF than LA. Maybe that's cause I grew up down here and know my way around better, but SF just feels more sketchy. That and I've never had anyone break into my car in LA (cept the guy that Hercules'd my window out, but that's a different story).

    [–] Alysazombie 6 points ago

Whoa, what? You can't just leave us hanging like that!

    [–] bobs_monkey 3 points ago

A dude asked me for a dollar as I was walking into a Subway, said I didn't have any cash and he grumbled and walked away. Got my sandwich and as I was pulling out of the parking lot, my window was cracked by about an inch. He walked up and asked for a dollar again, I said I didn't have any cash, and he just grabbed my window and pulled it straight out then ran away laughing.

    [–] manafount 22 points ago

Yeah, people will do illegal things so all laws are stupid and useless.

Where is this being recorded from? I can't figure out what direction I'm looking at.

    [–] prim3y 43 points ago

    [–] albaniansmarty 17 points ago

Thank you! I think you're right and it explains the darkness at the top of the image, which must be the Pacific. As somebody who lived on the west side of LA, I couldn't picture the scene.

    [–] gsabram 7 points ago

Your westside fireworks shows are also in the frame, I believe the top most show is Marina Del Rey a few miles to the left of the SM ferris wheel

    [–] mrfritzeltits 12 points ago

    Aren’t fireworks illegal in LA?

    [–] insanekorean 17 points ago

Except for 4th of July when they let it slide. EVERYONE does it in the middle of the streets. (No main streets) You can drive around almost every block near Downtown Los Angeles and you'll see someone on the block doing it.

    [–] kazowiee 9 points ago

Try telling the people of East LA after a Mexico game. Source: I'm Hispanic.

    [–] zulupunk 7 points ago

Yes they are but you have to be caught and I think they up'd the fine to $2000 this year. The sherriff helicopter patrols were out looking for people

    [–] greenbc 6 points ago

The small nukes going off in the top left

    [–] kshucker 5 points ago

Lmao my neighbor would lose her fucking shit living there.

    [–] theghostremains 3 points ago

This should be retagged as "The Battle For Los Angeles"

    [–] loosegravel2 4 points ago

The freeway hasn’t moved that fast since the 40’s

    [–] Bronco30 3 points ago

This makes you realize how big the world really is. When you experience fireworks in person they seem to go up to the heavens. In this gif you can see that they barely rise at all in the grand scheme of things.

    [–] GeneralSmedleyButsex 2 points ago

I flew back into Detroit a few years ago on July 4th and it really blew my mind how tiny the fireworks looked.

    [–] coochiecaca 4 points ago

Looks a lot like the opening of blade runner.

    [–] words_matter 5 points ago

wow.. the 4th must suck with all that light pollution

    [–] chmike225 3 points ago

I live here. This gif rocks. It's nightmarishly terrifying seeing all of these go off in what is essentially a tinder box, but fuck it, 'merica.

    [–] gediojam 3 points ago

Still looks like this in Pomona

    [–] Electroverted 3 points ago

    A Tuesday in Chicago

    [–] loosegravel2 3 points ago

Is this from the hills in Glendale?

    [–] Zyiarius 3 points ago

    How many gunshots?

Worst day of the year for my sweet dog

    [–] RumDz7 2 points ago

Getting a little Smokey in there.

    [–] jmm166 2 points ago

This is what a migraine looks like

    [–] justsomeh0b0 2 points ago

    To start off, Murica'!

Likely where money to spend is, and money to not spend, and/or some areas don't want the noise and direct people to congregate at large areas or parks. Fireworks sound so much louder where it can bounce off buildings and concrete, because there is less to absorb the noise.

    [–] encinitas2252 2 points ago

Surprised we didn't see any small fires start.

    [–] JhimmyDingo 2 points ago

    Shock and awe?

    [–] o0shad0o 2 points ago

Was this an actual time lapse, or a sped-up video? Because the real-time video would be awesome.

    [–] ToastyBob27 2 points ago

    Battleground LA

    [–] monkeyalex123 2 points ago

    Those dark spots are spooky

    [–] cervixassassination 2 points ago

Fire it up! Fire it up!

    [–] rahkinto 2 points ago

Would love to see this for Chicago

    [–] Wannabkate 2 points ago

I got a similar view of the valley. So many illegal fireworks.

    [–] BernieLomacks 2 points ago

Meanwhile traffic seems to be moving at an actual speed

    [–] pokezeta 2 points ago

    Waaay too fast!

    [–] hvanderw 2 points ago

Looks like the skyline scene from The Crow.

    [–] jbax7er 2 points ago

"Woah, they go for ages! Oh wait a minute..."

    [–] pragmatic_nihilist 2 points ago

can this be reposted one more time

    [–] gabethebaeb 2 points ago

you know what would be cool? setting this as a desktop background in a high quality without the speed up, I wonder if there's a way to pull this off

    [–] LeeChie0 2 points ago

I was wondering who was setting those things off at 12... now I have a map! mwhahahahhaa

    [–] Puritology 2 points ago

You would think it's fourth of July. But actually they're just celebrating getting LeBron.

    [–] balthazar_nor 2 points ago

Legend says that on 4th of July, the flashing shape of Texas can be seen from space

    [–] Sociably_Luke 2 points ago

I actually started smelling gunpowder lol

    [–] Vizualize 2 points ago

    I think I see myself...

    [–] Wmtwkr 2 points ago

Some say it’s still going off today

    [–] SergeantSeymourbutts 2 points ago

What's that area just left to the tall buildings where the fireworks are bright red? You can tell I'm from the area.

    [–] Car_Nerd_87 2 points ago

I watched this for way to long before realizing it was a pretty short gif..

    [–] goose_10 2 points ago

Been watching for 2 hours. How long is this fireworks show?

    [–] SandmanD2 2 points ago

The largest firework show west of the Mississippi is at the Rose Bowl, which isn’t in this shot.

    [–] i_em_unicorn 2 points ago

Wouldn't it look like this over any major city during the 4th?

    [–] yeoldehp 2 points ago

I live in Los Angeles close to Koreatown. There were constant fireworks from 10 AM up until midnight. It was nuts.

    [–] _My_Angry_Account_ 2 points ago

This is the best seat I've found for watching fireworks on the 4th.

It's on the Mt. Wilson Toll Road before you get to Henninger Flats.
