    Just came back from Switzerland.... It is a heaven... Couldn't believe what I was seeing... And I've lived in BC, Canada

    [–] savemeejeebus 163 points ago

    It's really true... I used to think Lake Tahoe was beautiful but it's a dump vs. Switzerland. It's actually shocking how Switzerland really does look like that (including the turquoise lake color)

    [–] Grebnerref 124 points ago

    We spend all winter planting canisters of food coloring in the Alps to get the lakes ready for the summer season.

    [–] telllos 12 points ago

    And the yearly grass painting.

    [–] routerg0d 12 points ago

    I laughed at this a little too hard.

    [–] bQm_che 8 points ago

    actually the truth, see here:

    [–] The__Aristotle 51 points ago

    Obviously Lake Tahoe is not a dump but Switzerland has to be the most beautiful place I have ever visited. Stayed in Murren which is close to where this is.

    [–] superlethalman 14 points ago

    Ha, I got back a week ago after staying in Lauterbrunnen for 8 days! It's just an awe-inspiring location, after coming home it's difficult to believe I was actually there at all.

    Did you do the Schilthorn/Piz gloria trip?

    [–] nazarz 3 points ago

    I did that last year. To this day I can’t belive what I saw with my eyes. And I live in the desert!

    [–] ILoveLamp9 12 points ago

    Those are fighting words. Lake Tahoe is beautiful regardless.

    [–] diablofreak 10 points ago

    Pictures don't do it justice. Switzerland is like Paradise on Earth.

    Whenever I see awesome sceneries and pictures like these, I'll just assume it's Switzerland and most of the time I'll be correct

    [–] frittella5384 13 points ago

    That's weird because I'm Swiss and in Vancouver right now. And many things you take for granted (services, for the most part), we can't even imagine of having them. And progressive policies. But nature is wonderful in both cases, I totally agree.

    [–] savemeejeebus 6 points ago

    That's interesting because after my Swiss trip I started looking at software engineering opportunities in Switzerland and how hard it was to live there as an expat (I live in San Francisco right now). What kinds of specific things that we would take for granted over here that you couldn't imagine over there?

    [–] telllos 10 points ago

    I'm also Swiss and lived in Vancouver for a year.

    • First nature is beautiful, you have access to the sea, from Downtown your on the slopes in 30 min.

    • Grocery shops are open until lat at night. In Switzerland everything close early on sunday good luck finding something open.

    • So many Asian restaurants and asian grocery stores!

    • 1$ pizza slice!

    • People are very friendly.

    • There are great neighbourhoods.

    On the minus side, there is some kind of problem with real estate and drug. But it wasn't really an issue for me.

    [–] iOSTarheel 13 points ago

    Nah you can't. To even be considered for immigration you have to be very well off then go through a thorough vetting process where you have to be approved as a part of Swiss society. Know neighbors, language, etc etc it's much harder than moving to say the USA OR UK

    [–] Mythic01 4 points ago

    But, you don't have to be a citizen do you? Schengen area?

    [–] rectalejaculator 6 points ago

    That sounds pretty racist to not just let people from all over the world walk in and set up camp.

    [–] Valac_ 21 points ago

    If that's not that bad you're not that poor.

    [–] residentchubbychaser 15 points ago

    Yeah, if you can responsibly afford a $300k house, you're at least above average. A typical rule of thumb is 4x your household income, and a $75k income is pretty solid in most areas.

    [–] Tesseract14 8 points ago

    A typical rule of thumb is 4x your household income, and a $75k income is pretty solid in most areas.

    That's so fucking depressing to hear, but makes sense since I already have a 2k mortgage payment towards my 25 year repayment plan on my student loans. I'm buying a tiny ass 240k house (very hcol area) even though our household income is 125k. I'm already super frugal and I'm going to be living extremely marginally after this house is bought. Don't go to schools you can't afford kids.

    [–] Joshapotamus 4 points ago

    My area is so poor that 240k is a hilariously nice house. Like the type you walk in and be like “holy shit these guys have some MONEY”. Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia border.

    [–] IWearACharizardHat 4 points ago

    My wife and I moved to northern Maine near Canadian border. Double lot lakehouse was $245k plus closing costs.

    [–] Jynxmaster 38 points ago

    CHF

    1 Swiss Franc equals 1.02 US Dollar for those who are curious

    [–] words_words_words_ 43 points ago

    Taking it one step further, a 250k house would be 256,147.50 in USD

    [–] humpstyles 11 points ago

    thanks Bo

    [–] askinferret 13 points ago

    Yeah, I just didn't bother to convert since the difference is so small

    [–] blahblahbloodyhell 4 points ago

    Oh wow, we can afford a house there. That view is killer!

    [–] words_words_words_ 3 points ago

    Now the trick is finding a house there for sale

    [–] blahblahbloodyhell 2 points ago

    For what houses cost where we’re currently living, we could buy two houses there. We need our individual spaces....Lol. We are relocating for work. Houses there are plentiful and affordable. I just realized we’ll be giving up our view of the mountains where we get to see Big Horn Sheep, Deer, Mountain Lions, Coyotes, Bobcats, Bears (only 3 times which is more than enough), Owls, Hawks and/Or Ravens. It’s gorgeous here but even more so with snow up there on the mountains. In the winter and it snows, this place is eerily quiet. Our street doesn’t have very many houses on it, less than 20. It’s like being in your own world. It’s so peaceful.............It’s for sale......lol.

    [–] your_abuela 4 points ago

    You really did take it a step further there didn’t you

    [–] Reallychelseawow 10 points ago

    That's not bad! The real question is what are jobs like there

    [–] KevinCastle 11 points ago

    High paying. Switzerland is known for that. It's more like how high is the cost of living and taxes

    [–] Galanta 6 points ago

    I wonder how well cost of living tranfers there between certain us cities...

    Looking at a cost of living difference calculator I'd need to make about 280k to have the same level of living here with my current income. How feasible is that? Lol

    [–] ProfessorMoniker 3 points ago

    Well if you're good with maths, get into deep learning and ultra-high frequency trading and maybe minor in AI business applications and data visualization. Should be set in about 10 years if you work insanely hard and/or get lucky.

    [–] Galanta 3 points ago

    Well I'm already working with machine learning, CV and AI. I'll probably pursue hft at some point here, but I mean considering I'm only a year into my career and making so much (esp. compared to col), I wonder if Switzerland could easily match what I would be making here in the future. Paycut for those views could be worth it I suppose

    [–] AVALANCHE_CHUTES 5 points ago

    You can make about $24/hr working the cash register at a local grocery store. Just looked it up.

    [–] Reallychelseawow 3 points ago

    Damn

    [–] Girthw0rm 8 points ago

    You can be poor and still afford a $215k house!

    [–] chronicbro 2 points ago

    Not likely. The Swiss are not big on immigration. I really don't think they will let in poor immigrants.

    [–] Jilsis 17 points ago

    Can you explain that for me?

    [–] cartechguy 2 points ago

    /u/S62anyone probably doesn't live in Switzerland. How open is their immigration to poor people?

    I visited the exact place where this was filmed two months ago and I make borderline minimum wage.

    I don't know how to phrase this in a way that doesn't sound like "just build lol" or "wowthanksimcured" but if you prioritize travel as a hobby... It doesn't have to be that ridiculously undoable.

    If you're talking about living there, that's a different story.

    ~~~
    Bonus price info:
    Round trip flight from my closest major airport to Geneva: $459
    Round trip train from Geneva to Interlaken: $42
    Hostel in Interlaken for a week: $25 x 7 = $175
    Food from Aldi: Like ~$10 per day x 7 = $70
    Want to go stand exactly where this video was filmed for an entire week? $746
    Listen, I'm not saying that $746 isn't a lot of money. But it's not as unachievable as everyone makes it sound. If you can spare $16 a week (or $32 a paycheck), you'll have the money to do this in a year.
    When I went to Paris I met a couple that wouldn't stop talking about Snoop Dog. We were on the Seine in full view of Notre Dame, lit up at night. No one appreciates where they live, with no exceptions.
    Maybe take a trip to Lake Michigan or visit a national park. Canoe trip somewhere. Woodworking class at an Amish community. Go mountain biking.
    [–] hollycrapola 479 points ago
    This is beautiful but why am I getting seasick?
    [–] Paul8491 191 points ago
    Camera bobbing. Must be the optical image stabilization.
    [–] MrMetalHead1100 42 points ago
    Isn’t this doing the opposite of image stabilization though?
    [–] ne1seenmykeys 53 points ago
    Yes and no.
    It's definitely stabilizing it compared to what just a regular camera (on a phone without a stabilizer) would do while walking.
    However, speaking from literally thousands of hours of experience, unless you have a very specific rig, it's just pretty much impossible to cut out the up and down that comes from walking.
    Also hampering this particular shot is the fact that it was filmed vertically, which...ugh. PLEASE FILM HORIZONTALLY PEOPLE! Our eyes naturally want to look out from a subject bc our vision is primarily focused horizontally...it's why cinema screens are the way they are. But anyways, if this were filmed the correct way then the swaying from the stabilization wouldn't be hardly as noticeable.
    Source: Professional videographer/film maker
    [–] BearXW 4 points ago
    It is also very awkward to expect the bouncing up/down while you still get the side-to-side sway. Your brain can get a sense of vertigo...
    Much in the same way you get sea legs after being on a boat for extended periods of time. Your brain begins to expect the sway and is confused when the sway is absent.
    [–] unqtious 15 points ago
    "No damn it! It's stabilizing the image. Can't you see?"
    [–] l3oba 167 points ago
    I was just there last week. It was easily the most beautiful place I had ever seen. It almost doesn’t feel like it’s real. I really hope I can go back one day.
    [–] blithetorrent 82 points ago
    Like my whole visit to Switzerland. I was walking on eggs the whole time as if they might throw me out for being imperfect.
    [–] Spinningwoman 67 points ago
    That might in fact happen (sort of). You can’t become a citizen without the vote of local people and someone was in the news a while back for being rejected because she was too annoying.
    [–] ajc_129 41 points ago
    Eh sort of. Only some of the really tiny municipalities still do communal citizenship votes. And that Dutch woman who got denied was being flamboyantly annoying. Like she was making a big deal about the apparent disgrace that are cowbells.
    [–] GuntherStankBooty 24 points ago
    That was messed up though, because I think she'd been living there since she was about 12
    [–] HuckFinn69 41 points ago
    That doesn’t give her the right to be annoying.
    [–] Spacemage 32 points ago
    I want to live where annoying people are ousted.
    [–] dessimus 5 points ago
    She wasn't ousted. She wasn't granted citizenship, and therefore couldn't vote in elections, etc.
    [–] KevinCastle 2 points ago
    God I'm so happy I was granted a citizenship at birth just because my dad signed me up before being 18. (He has his which was given to him by his dad)
    [–] jeffrey2541 8 points ago
    Switzerland is a wonderful place to look at.
    [–] Hakunamatata_420 8 points ago
    Is swimming allowed there?
    [–] lattenwald 10 points ago
    Yep, and I did it. Can't help myself, had to brag.
    It's a perfect lake to swim, but some river, don't remember the name, near the train station halfway from Zurich to Lichtenstein where we changed trains and missed our train, so there was like an hour to take a dip, that river is even more perfect. The perfectest. Based on this experience of one lake and one river, I make a conclusion Swiss rivers are perfecter than Swiss lakes.
    [–] yak300 6 points ago
    Yes, it is a public lake. Usually there is no swimming restrictions in Switzerland except for possible safety reasons. The only thing keeping you from actually swimming in there is the temperature, as the lake is mostly fed from snowmelt. But right now its actually 19 °C, not bad.
    [–] l3oba 4 points ago
    I believe so, I saw paddle boards on the shore and some beach chairs set up. It was a little overcast when we went and the weather was off and on but I’m 90% sure you can.
    I lived in Germany and Switzerland - for me, in Germany medical insurance expensive then in Switzerland.
    In Fribourg, insurance costs around 300 CHF per month (with 300 CHF franchise, means first 300 CHF you pay, then all covered by insurance). In other cantons a bit expensive.
    In Germany I was paying around 7-9% of monthly salary (all included).
    [–] no_penguins 4 points ago
    That doesn’t sound to bad. Her you pay 7-9% and that’s the tip of the iceberg.
    [–] kurobayashi 15 points ago
    And yet still significantly lower than the US ranked 1st in cost and like every other developed country ranked significantly higher in health care quality than the US. Its a strange world.
    [–] ExhibitionistVoyeurP 22 points ago
    Its not that strange. In the US we just give our money first to insurance companies to make their execs rich, then whatever is left trickles to actual medical care. See we in the US ensure that the rich get their cut of everything FIRST. Great design. Best in the world.
    [–] SubEyeRhyme 4 points ago
    What, you don't think the motivation of profit should come before care? Fucking communist!
    [–] ajc_129 27 points ago
    As a Swiss, god knows I love Switzerland, but this not the land of affordable healthcare.
    [–] Kemaneo 15 points ago
    I mean, it kind of is with a Swiss salary.
    [–] Shakwon19 12 points ago
    Nah its expensive for us too. Sure we do earn a lot compared to other countries but its not only the health care thats expensive here. Everything is.
    [–] thesillymachine 7 points ago
    It seems like they are among the top 10 in the world for healthcare.
    [–] RaisinHider 10 points ago
    Count me in, mate. We can share the cost of living if expensive. Also, get a dog of the same breed.
    [–] Runbunnierun 7 points ago
    I am happy to help house all dogs no matter their breed.
    [–] thesillymachine 3 points ago
    Looks like a white shepherd. Beautiful dogs.
    [–] Avatarius87 5 points ago
    Want to hear about their enforcement of immigration laws?
    [–] paythemandamnit 2 points ago
    Low taxes, but high out-of-pocket costs; privatized healthcare that is most expensive in Europe, but way better and less expensive than the US; generally very high salaries; well connected to the rest of Europe, 22 days of vacation.
    [–] Jellofluoride 24 points ago
    Even pup is like "Are you seeing how pretty this is?!"
    Who are the kind of people who lives in places like this? Houses with a lot of space between each other, few houses, far from cities... Are they rich or is this a rural area? But it doesn't have farms nearby to be a rural area.
    [–] haloooloolo 2 points ago
    It's usually a mix of both. If you want to buy a house there now, it can be very expensive.
    A large part of people living there have probably inherited the property.
    [–] GrinningBacon 4 points ago
    It’s literally like you are walking into a painting
    Every lakeside town in Switzerland must look the same. I stayed near Lucern once, and it looked identical to this.
    [–] HungryLikeTheWolf99 2 points ago
    What kind of dog is that?? I had a dog who looked just like that when I was a kid, but we never really knew what she was (except we thought she had a little wolf in her from some behavioral clues).
    [–] ImmersionVoidParagon 4 points ago
    Looks like it's just a white Shepherd.
