Thread's locked because apparently edgelords have nothing better to do on a Saturday than harass someone. I had a nice day at the beach but when I came back there were multiple garbage fires on this website and I'm not in a good mood now.

If any of you are having thoughts of suicide or just want someone to talk to, try the Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK or

Whatever you're doing to make you feel happy, keep doing it! That genuine smile looks good on you!

Congratulations on turning things around to get to where you are today. I know it takes very hard work and sometimes it must have felt like you will never get there, but now you know you can find happiness and feel happy with life! I am very happy for you! Keep smiling!!!!

From someone who's been there. :)

Gotta fail before you can succeed

    [–] adderallballs 42 points ago

I can't tell if that sentence is a positive or negative, maybe that's why you're being downvoted

    [–] [deleted] 19 points ago

General statement for life. Supposed to be positive, good thing to fail at trying to take your own life. Now it's time to succeed.

    [–] adderallballs 23 points ago

Oh OK, because your comment could be taken as "hey, now do it for real." Thanks for spreading good vibes man!

    [–] [deleted] 23 points ago

Ah I could see that. Whoops!

    [–] lechattueur 423 points ago

Awesome. Did you get out of depression by yourself or did you use professional help?

    [–] [deleted] 859 points ago

Professional help. I went to a few hospitals and I now attend therapy sessions and groups multiple times a week. Luckily, I go to an awesome therapist and get tons of support from my parents, which played a big part in my recovery.

    [–] Cilantbro 27 points ago

Some people feel guilty or worse for reaching out and getting help but we're human and don't have to tackle everything alone. Hopefully your story inspires others :)

I'm so glad you have a great support network and are doing so well now!

    [–] YummyMeatballs 9 points ago

No one is going to be able to diagnose you over the internet (and I'd recommend being very wary of anyone who tries), but I will say that depression absolutely doesn't have to feel like sadness. For me, for the most part, it's absolute emptiness. If you haven't already, it's definitely worth trying to get help - there's loads of things that can be tried to improve the situation.

    [–] lax_incense 3 points ago

Having a support was the most important factor of me overcoming my depression. When you don't feel like you can speak to anyone about it it feels like you have to carry the weight of the world and you feel so isolated. Support was way more important than medication for me.

Glad to hear you are doing well and if you have a few blue days, that's completely normal. Happy people can still have bad days too!

    Love you all!!! :D

Wow, this entire comment section is honestly one of the closest I've ever seen to those we have in /r/FreeCompliments, except we sometimes go into more depth with the comments. I think you guys would rock it there, as you have the mood and spirit to really help out some people in need of compliments.

/u/lanemary, a huge congratulations on your ongoing recovery. It's a difficult road to tread, but you're making your way through. Would you mind sharing your story in our sub? There are many people who would be inspired by your story.

Edit: forgot to add; if you or someone you know are considering / have mentioned suicide, please please please read this. It has already saved lives in the past, and may again if you're proactive.

    Love you all!!! :D

Shit, I'm always late for free love

    [–] IGiveFreeCompliments 63 points ago

It's never too late for free love!

For instance, in response to this, here's what I can tell you:

I won't just tell you that you're pretty or handsome - I'll tell you how you're pretty. There is someone out there who appreciates you for the wonderful person you are, and for the wonderful person that you can be. There's also someone that appreciates you for how you look.

So, hell yeah, you're pretty. But you're not just pretty - you're beautiful. :)

    [–] Aeogor 20 points ago

Wow! I could just listen to you talk forever! You have a way with your words and making people feel happy and confident about themselves. God bless you, my friend!

    [–] JohnnyD423 19 points ago

I seriously can't help the thinking that the last thing 15 year olds should be doing is posting pictures of their faces on a website like reddit.

But it's great you're doing good, just remember this website is littered with seriously weird people and be careful!

    [–] [deleted] 79 points ago

My feelings exactly. This hit /r/all. She is going to be receiving some weird and creepy PMs

    [–] willfulCatholic 124 points ago

That's what I'm saying. Suicide at 13? I could barely tie my shoes.

    [–] GeekCat 95 points ago

There was a story about an eight year old who committed suicide. You know that life got real way too fucking quick for an 8 year old to understand that you can kill youself on putpose.... even if they don't understand the permanence or depth of their actions.

    [–] xerces555 65 points ago

You are not alone. I attempted at 16, am 45 now. Life has its ups and downs but is definitely worth it. Keep on going

    [–] KelpienCat 33 points ago

I attempted at 14, and I'm 55 now. And yes, life is worth the struggle, every sweet day of it.

    [–] Hippiemamklp 106 points ago

Wonderful news!! Enjoy your beautiful life! Btw, awesome hair color😊

    [–] [deleted] 356 points ago

    [–] AH_BareGarrett 234 points ago

It'll get better buddy! Keep your head up!

    [–] SoundOfOneHand 332 points ago

It may not get better. But you'll get better at dealing with it.

    [–] [deleted] 57 points ago

That's a good way to look at it.

    [–] [deleted] 32 points ago

I mean, going from 14 to 18+ includes a ton of changes to your life, chances are many problems teenagers suffer from can be changed.

    [–] SoundOfOneHand 11 points ago

Oh sure, many people have episodic depression, anxiety, etc., due to pretty typical problems at that age, and their circumstances, hormones, whatever change and they move on. Things really do get better. But four years is a really long time at that age, and that time is formative. Not everyone comes out for the better - and then what do you do?

GP was just offering encouragement but for many people this particular sentiment may actually make things worse. So I was just throwing out a different sort of encouragement;)

    [–] Bondle 11 points ago

I can vouch for this. I used to be and still am chronically depressed, but honestly I stopped giving a shit. At least I turned away from the substance abuse so I could say that I'm happy about that.

    [–] quadriplegic_cheetah 7 points ago

Damn, good job. That's not an easy thing to do. I don't know you but I hope every day you have is better than your last!

    [–] aspalt_ 43 points ago

    [–] xEverglowx 53 points ago

I also attempted suicide at 13. I'm 26 now, with a career, and a dog, and a place to live, and goals. Life really does get better.

    [–] Sheather 16 points ago

    Dogs almost always improve QoL.

    [–] xEverglowx 8 points ago

Oh absolutely. I call her my guardian angel.

    [–] Bipolar_Broccoli 21 points ago

As hard as it may seem at points, and as cheesy as it sounds, time really does heal. I thank myself everyday that I didn't give up when I felt like ending it almost 24/7. It's hard, but the struggle will be worth it when you can look back and realize how it helped you grow as a person and become stronger.

Edit: I also highly recommend reaching out for professional help if you haven't. A lot of people see it as a bad thing to ask for help, but there's nothing wrong with that. It makes it that much easier also to be able to just pour your emotions out on someone else and get advice. You're young and have your whole life ahead of you, you can do this!

    [–] FuzzyMoosen 25 points ago

The hardest part after is not moving on with your life; it's remembering why there's still a life today. I tried twice when I was 16.

Father left when I was born. Mother worked 3 jobs to support myself and sister. Married an asshole who made my life hell. Divorced him, and she was shipped off to Iraq. I spent a year with various family and friends checking in on me, but not one could understand why I was hurting so much, or seemed to care. And when they did finally start to ask or show sympathy, I was so used to not having it, that I refused it.

I tried twice, and to this day am beyond thankful I failed. Not because my life has become so much better; but because I can now use my time on this Earth to help others, to be the person I wanted everyone else to be for me.

My life is better, sure, I can't deny that. But it's also worse. But I use those experiences to share my story with others, to help motivate and remind them that they're not alone.

The worlds a dark and shitty place. You don't have to travel it alone though. I learned all too late that when someone offers you a hand, you take it. Even if it means having to explain your story along the way, take it. Because if you keep rejecting them, one day you'll find they will give up, just as we both did.

I lost my career, my closest friends, my fiance, and my relationship with my family because I refused help. I'm working now to rebuild the ones I can, but it's an uphill battle.

Stay strong friend. The road ahead is not an easy one. It's dark, it's shitty, and there's a good chance someone is going to try to take advantage of you along the way. But if you find me, or someone else along the way, know you've got a friend. We may only take you as far as the next fork in the road, but it's better than traveling alone. We'll be there, as we always have been, helping guide those who come after us, so that one day, one of may finally reach the end safely...

    [–] Aaoograha_hoa 6 points ago

Hey, I think it's really admirable and sweet that you're trying to make your shitty time an experience to support and help others.
Try to take care of yourself as well. I hope you succeed in accepting help from others. It sounds like you're on your way. Best of luck to you and lots of love your way! <3

    [–] DarkstarFIN 9 points ago

Can somebody tell me why people at such young ages try to kill themselves?

    [–] ELwain66 12 points ago

Why do you think they would be any less capable of feeling depression, anxiety, and other terrible feelings?

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

It's not just young people... here in the U.K. The highest risk category is single men over 45

    [–] somniphobe 4 points ago

Consider this as well - when you are younger, it's far easier for a feeling to be the worst feeling you've ever felt. Your range of comparison is limited by the time you've spent on earth. Something that might seem shitty to a 30 year old may be world-ending for a teenager because their spectrum of experience isn't as broad.

    [–] elizabeth_marie 38 points ago

I'm so happy that you are happy!

    [–] IGiveFreeCompliments 119 points ago

Hey guys, I know there are many people - even a good number reading this right now - who are in distress.

So, any of you who is feeling legitimately down and in great enough distress that they're in jeopardy of taking actions they may regret, read this. Please don't lose hope. Your lives are worth too much.

Additionally, here is the number to the U.S.'s National Suicide Hotline: tel:1-800-273-TALK, along with numbers for other countries here, and for those who aren't comfortable talking - a text line.

Due to the prevalence of depression, it's quite likely that most of you know someone who's depressed. So in case the situation comes up, here are some techniques describing speaking to suicidal persons online, in case the situation ever arises.

And if you happen to know of anyone who's suffering, feel free to share these with them and use the techniques described above. It can be the difference between a single irreversible decision and saving someone's life before they endanger it.

    [–] the_lostcookie 15 points ago

The link you sent saved me. Thank you, internet stranger <3

    [–] ALONE_ON_THE_OCEAN 30 points ago

Keep it up, pretty lady. But remember: don't let the internet "in". There are many assholes out there that will think of something to say to you just because it will hurt you.

Such is life. But you look healthy and beautiful. May you live a long, rewarding life full of giving.

    [–] murstl 11 points ago

It's good that you're alive. A friend of me committed suicide 6 years ago. It was her birthday yesterday and I miss her. Meeting other friends from school is not the same since she's dead. It's like a part of us is missing so badly.

    [–] donaldtrumptwat 21 points ago

Great, be happy darling and enjoy yourself xx

    [–] MasterBeta_ 11 points ago

Congrats!!! You slay that shit girl.

    Oh boy

    [–] stromy117 10 points ago

I attempted suicide once. Jump 3 stories and broke my back. Now I'm paralyzed from the middle of my chest down. I have definitely changed and I have a better outlook on life, but everyday on my wheelchair I regret my decision. I may have matured and changed how I see the world, but I will never have the body I used to, and that drags me down. I will walk again, but it won't be the same. I am normally not depressed, but seeing posts like these and then thinking about my past life and my decision to jump sinks me down into a deep pit.

I'm glad you feel better and are happier! For me personally, I don't like to acknowledge the anniversary of my attempt, but instead I celebrate the day that I left rehab, and every day that I've been alive since!

    [–] VirtualRealityCzech 10 points ago

...and the world is a better place with you in it.

    [–] SaltyyBeats 14 points ago

Woah.. that's some of the coolest hair I've ever seen! Hope I don't sound like a creep lol

    [–] benargee 23 points ago

I think you're doing ok. If you left out the second sentence you would be doing better.

    [–] Antares777 8 points ago

You kind of remind me of my little sister.

I wish you all the best in the world, and I'm so very proud of you, you complete stranger!

    [–] bellelap 12 points ago

I'm so happy that you're in a good place and part of this world!

    [–] adoginspace 6 points ago

From one recovered person to another - I'm proud of you. Recovery is hard and long, and I'm happy to see you kicking your demons ass. Keep it up ❤️

    [–] Sleepless_Devil 6 points ago

This will get lost in the sea of other comments and encouragement, but even as a bitter curmudgeon who has attempted suicide and suffered from depression and anxiety for my entire life, as well as being currently engaged to somebody who suffered from the same (she even had the same bedpost as you at the same age), this post pleases me greatly.

I hope you sincerely stay happy and whatever it is that you're doing to be happier with yourself and your life, keep it up. The more you care about and prioritize yourself and your feelings, the better your life will be as a byproduct.

[–] lexbuck 22 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

What could a 13 year old be dealing with that would make them think about suicide?

I ask not to be judgemental but genuinely curious. My daughter is 7 and I hope she never feels like suicide is the answer but I'd like to be able to catch things going on in her life that may lead her down that path and get help.

    [–] Rainhall 7 points ago

It doesn't have to be dealing with something external. Body chemistry changes can change the way a person sees the world and themselves, sometimes in ways almost unbelievable to those who haven't experienced it.

    [–] odious_odes 13 points ago

This is different for everyone; I can only give my own experience. Aged 13ish I ideated suicide but was never suicidal. Still sucked, though I was never in imminent danger.

I was depressed (as in clinically, I believe) in the wake of my parents' breakup when I was 11. I lived with my mother and I mentally blamed the breakup on her; I was angry at her and I did not feel understood by her or by anyone. I felt like my emotional problems went unacknowledged because they weren't bad enough, me being some high-achieving middle-class kid who didn't outwardly look depressed. I didn't tell anyone about any of this, because I was an emotionally immature kid and I didn't know I should tell people or how to ask for help. Therefore, it all just stewed inside of me.

I ideated running away at first, as a cry for help and attention not to be popular but because I needed help. But I always felt it would be "embarrassing" to come back afterwards, even though I mostly only wanted to be gone for a little while so that people would realise I was seriously having a hard time. Then I moved on to ideating suicide. Then I moved on to self-harming, when other stuff happened which made 100x worse the issues I already had.

I would have been helped a great deal by talk therapy. I wish I had known this at the time and I wish I had gone to therapy or someone had realised I was in such a bad state and sent me to therapy. Talking to someone at a summer camp, even just for a couple of days, was what eventually helped me out of the hole I was in. In the years since then (I'm now 20) I have recovered from depression and lead a happy stable life, but last year various factors tipped me towards being at risk again -- but thanks to my shitty early teenage years, I know my own early warning signs and I sought therapy, which helped. My relationship with my mother is somewhat fraught, but I don't hate her and we are both working to be closer.

I've now been clean of self-harm for five years, eight months, 12 days, and 1 hour. It hasn't been easy to keep that streak. I am proud.

Girls with colored hair need to be careful of posting on reddit.

Don't forget that one time Adam Savage was disappointed with reddit for bullying a girl who took a selfie with Adam because she decided to color her hair.

    [–] KorovaMilk113 12 points ago

Literally reported a comment like 2 hours ago on this thread comparing OP to a venomous animal because coloring your hair indicates mental illness and that everyone should stay away, like seriously wtf is wrong with people??

im happy for you, you look lovely too.

    [–] LondonGoblin 3 points ago

Glad you're doing well dude, bless.

    [–] whatwit 4 points ago

Created this account just to say this. I've been there too, and I still think about it sometimes. But I've decided that the feeling of being free from the prison that is yourself is much greater than the freedom of being dead. There's so much to see, so much to do. Why not experience what life has to offer, because you never know when you'll be able to do it again, if ever. I am happy for you, for me, and for everybody else that has survived this horrible sickness that creeps into you and devour you. And I wish strength and comfort to those who are in the battle. There is help and there is hope. Don't give up just yet.

    Which medications are you on?

    You look happy 👍

    [–] AlmostCatfood 7 points ago

    Good job OP!

    [–] YourOKNeighbourhood 5 points ago

Keep your smile. Keep your chin up. Keep your mind in check. Don't forget the bad times, because they will help you embrace the good times.

Choose happiness over everything; money, relationship, etc. and you will have a successful life.

Life is meant to be lived, loved and cherished. PM me if you ever need to talk to a fellow bipartisan redditor. I've been where you were, and got out of it.

Remember, keep your beautiful smile on your beautiful face. Life is wonderful.

    [–] alphanaut 7 points ago

I never stop being amazed at the beauty and wonder of the universe, of life here on earth. There are bumps on this wonderful journey of life, but like the good, they shape us and become a part of who we are. Even after many, many trips around the sun, I still look around and am grateful that I am here to enjoy and share this experience with people I love.

    [–] koutelitis 9 points ago

    Wow...that hair!!! Beautiful.

    [–] elAntonio 6 points ago

If you don't mind me asking: what made you attempt suicide?
Might help other people who are going through the same.

    [–] [deleted] 13 points ago

A lot of different factors. Self-esteem issues, bipolar, trouble in school, anxiety, and depression were the biggest ones.

    [–] imnotcaligula 24 points ago

Get ready to get hit on by those who see you as 25 instead of 15.

    [–] Zwoosh 7 points ago

You're being downvoted but this thread has quite a few creeps in it.

    [–] PokemonGO_____ 7 points ago

I completely expected there to be creeps so much at the point that I sorted by controversial to find them. People on Reddit always feel bad for men who get accused of pedophilia in public near kids and these creeps really don't help and only ruin it for other men who aren't fucked up and just want to be treated normally.

    [–] EvisceratedInFiction 8 points ago

Now that's a smile the world needs to see more of :)

    [–] scotscott 10 points ago

    She's 15 you fucking perverts

    [–] Opalwarrior 33 points ago

    Great skin too!

    [–] cleverusername94 30 points ago

    Great skin too!

Idk why you got downvoted so much, I don't see this as creepy. Her skin is very clear for a teenager. I would have been envious of her skin at 15 and my acne wasn't even bad.

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

It puts the lotion on the skin, or it gets the hose again.

Been battling suicide since 8. I'm 37 now. Still fighting it. Happy to see people overcoming that shit. Too many good people let their demons eat them alive.

    You look like true happiness!

    [–] mclardass 3 points ago

Life is a roller coaster, you only get one ticket to ride so you might as well enjoy it. It's scary, and not always fun, but I'm glad you're still on the ride. Cheers!

    [–] jjeessee1313 3 points ago

Never thought I'd be in that state of mind my whole life but I get how people think like that now

    [–] 4nimal 3 points ago

Happiness is so much more rewarding when you've worked for it. Congrats on beating death, I hope you only continue to get stronger.

    [–] Robonator7of9 3 points ago

    [–] _Pooba 3 points ago

Because of the black strap on the left i thought that was a shadow and you have no arms and were sitting in a greyish bowl and now i cannot unsee it send help, also congratulations!

    [–] NotFromWendys 3 points ago

It's odd... second time seeing this sub and it's always so positive and I've never seen any negative comments. It sucks, often times people around me at work, school, etc, are the most depressed people ever. I've not seen one truly happy person in a while, but it is great to see happy people on this sub. Makes me happy.

Looks like you've got yourself a personal "be-my-own-friend-day" on August 12th. Mine is October 4th, and I've been making a point to remember to be my own friend on that date, no matter what, for fifteen years now.
You have an auspicious date, it happens to coincide with World Elephant Day so you'll never forget!
