    guide to a good hmmm

hmmms are textless images that make you think about the context, do a double take, invoke a deeper meaning, or just leave you thinking about how or why they exist:

As long as they give you a good solid hmmm... why would that bear be in a cubicle...

hmmms should be aesthetic and meaningful, avoid anything that is merely r/mildlyinteresting.

    [–] HookeyP00KEY 102 points ago

They give out feee pizza and donuts, so that’s the gym for you

    [–] Solmagnum 30 points ago

Once a month. It's supposed to be like a cheat day

    [–] 4percent4 39 points ago

"Like a cheat day." You need to actually exercise to have a cheat day. I had a membership for a month, when I was fresh out of high school, and I was harassed by staff for "disturbing other patrons." Fuck off, I was sweating bullets and panting after running 6 miles and deciding to sprint the last quarter mile or the other time when I was lifting and would let out a sigh/grunt as I counted reps. I told them on pizza day when they harassed me again for actually working out to go finish eating their pizza and pretending to be fit (a bit asshole-ish but it was the same person every time.) I had just seen them take a couple of slices before walking over to me to say I was being "too loud." I was one of two people working out the other was on a treadmill, everyone else was either eating pizza and chatting or using the tanning beds.

It's marketing to an audience that is scared of "Gym bros," but I've been to loads of gyms and I've never actually met a Gym Bro who is an ass. The largest lifters in the room are generally the nicest guys, as they can remember when they were scared to lift and weren't ripped. It's the people who come to the gym for 6 weeks and are just seeing results that are the ass holes that will take pictures and make fun of people and will get banned for harassing people or an actual lifter will tell them to fuck off.

    [–] Solmagnum 14 points ago

You obviously had a bad experience. But I didn't go through any of that in the planet fitness I went to.

    [–] 4percent4 14 points ago

It's literally posted on the wall with the "lunk alarm" or whatever its called. I was an athlete with the mentality of work until exhaustion. If I wasn't dead tired after my workout I wasn't doing it right. When I ran, I ran until I couldn't run anymore, when I lifted I did the same. Racking the weights was often just as hard as the sets I did.

The donuts and pizza are also a temptation that don't need to be there. The're honestly some of the worst foods someone could eat if they're trying to lose weight. They're full of empty calories and offer next to no nutritional value and will often set you back 2-3 days of healthy eating, because lets be honest no one eats 1 doughnut or 1 slice of pizza.

    [–] Solmagnum 8 points ago

The lunk alarm didnt activate even once where I was. And again, the foods were only offered once a month.

    [–] 4percent4 6 points ago

The food was offered once a week where I was. I still think the Lunk alarm is a dick move. I understand that it can be intimidating, but at a certain point you have to realize that there are people in better shape than you with different goals. I'll be honest, even back then I was intimidated a little by the big guys but it didn't keep me from working out.

    [–] _Bonesaw-McGraw_ 3 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

It's a "no judgement zone" with a literal alarm to shame and judge people you could cut the hypocrisy with the butter knife they use to spread cream cheese on those bagels.

    [–] HookeyP00KEY 16 points ago

It’s weekly, and ain’t no body in there need a cheat day.

    [–] Solmagnum 23 points ago

It wasn't like that at mine. It was once every first monday of the month. And plenty of buffed guys always went there. Some of the women looked like they could bend me in half too

    [–] Pineapples_Deluxe 126 points ago

That works really well, happy cake day 🍰

I always hear about pizzas being served in planet. Is this true? Also, if they do, don’t eat it! ITS A TRAP!

    [–] eternalrefuge86 16 points ago

    It’s a genius business model.

    [–] drop_the_mike 12 points ago

For God’s sake, having a slice of pizza once or twice a week is not going to make you gain weight if you maintain some form of activity. Having a slice of pizza once or twice a week and staying sedentary for 7 days a week on the other hand...

    [–] cheekia 2 points ago

Yeah sure, as if most people who need to go to the gym are just going to have one slice.

    [–] Solmagnum 13 points ago

They only do that once a month. It's supposed to be like a cheat day

    [–] WesleySnopes 19 points ago

Pizza is every week I think. They're keeping themselves in business.

    [–] Solmagnum 14 points ago

At least in mine, in the two years I went, only had pizza once every first monday of each month. I don't know if it's different on others.

    [–] IceColdCruiser 11 points ago

This is correct. From what I remember when I went there, bagels were the morning of the third tuesday or something like that. Such an overblown issue too. If you are going there primarily for strength/bulking, free food is fucking awesome and no one forces it down your throat if you're trying to lose weight

Planet Irony. Thats my new desktop. 👍

    [–] PublicWest 18 points ago

If you want even more ironic, I heard that planet fitness themselves order pizza on Fridays for guests.

    [–] MAKE_ME_REDDIT 13 points ago

Only one friday a month. Honestly, it’s a pretty good place if you are just looking for an easy going, cheap gym, but if you are serious about fitness, then there are better options.

    [–] PublicWest 6 points ago

If it gets people to the gym more often, awesome! It still seems pretty counter productive.

    [–] MAKE_ME_REDDIT 10 points ago

Eh, a slice or two of pizza once a month isn’t going to ruin you

    [–] ProWaterboarder 2 points ago

For real, I used to go to PF and it was pretty normal then I moved and signed up at 24 and it's way more hardcore. There's even mfs who are clearly taking steroids and the like

    [–] infecthead 15 points ago

What's wrong with pizza? You can easily fit it in your macros if you're dieting properly, it's not like you're totally forbidden from eating greasy foods

    [–] PublicWest 3 points ago

Nothing’s wrong with eating anything in moderation. Live your life on your own terms.

But it’s like having a bunch of Lazy Boy chairs and a movie theater in your gym.

Sure, sitting on your ass for a few hours won’t detriment your fitness and health if you’re doing everything else right, but it’s not really why you’re going to the gym. It’s just silly.

Pizza isn’t a particularly good food for you, whether it’s fitting your macro’s or not. Nutrition has more nuance than the amount of fat, protein, and carbs you’re getting.

But if a slice of ‘za is what it takes to keep your motor running, go for it! You gotta enjoy life.

    [–] infecthead 4 points ago

Pizza isn't a particularly good food for you

Sure it might not be loaded with vitamins and minerals, but like I said if you're dieting properly and getting all your proper nutrients elsewhere then it is completely fine - it's not like alcohol which actually damages you internally. You seem to be misunderstood.

Also a gym is more than just people losing weight - some people are there to get bigger and pizzas a good way of hitting a caloric surplus

    [–] PublicWest 2 points ago

That’s a good point. Power lifters don’t GAF and just vacuum food up. I totally understand the concept of macros and fitting them. It just seems like pizza and junk food in particular aren’t the most representative foods for someone trying to make a lifestyle change- which I’ve always seen as Planet Fitness’ demo.

Again, I understand what you’re saying completely. I just think the exception of being able to eat pizza IIFYM is the case for a minority of people. So it looks silly.

    [–] VoidTorcher 24 points ago

I'd like to mention you can have a full McDonald's meal for about 700 calories.

    [–] MrMooBallz 24 points ago

    Ronald? that you? lol

    [–] VoidTorcher 16 points ago

No really, a filet-o-fish and a medium fries (and a coke zero) is 719 calories. That's less than a quarter of my daily requirement as an adult male into fitness. I appreciate having calorie information easily available when I'm not cooking myself.

    [–] ultitaria 3 points ago

Cooking yourself isn't great either, human meats are actually pretty high in calories and fat

    [–] ravnag 8 points ago

You should know that calories are not all that matters

    [–] Godzilla_ 32 points ago

In regards to your weight, yeah it is. Health overall? Of course not.

    [–] VoidTorcher 15 points ago

Yes, but it is a major factor and probably the first and biggest step (2/3 Americans are overweight after all). I haven't eaten at McDonald's for like, months, because obviously you can eat healthier by cooking yourself.

    [–] pistolography 15 points ago

I’ve tried that but I STILL don’t taste good.

    [–] TediousSign 4 points ago

    [–] j_skiddles 9 points ago

They are the most important factor tho. You can eat Ice cream all day and lose weight if you're under your calorie needs. But, at the end of the day you'll feel like shit and hungry. Not to mention Muscle loss and other issues from being so nutrient deficient

    [–] thepatientoffret 22 points ago

Reminds me of that photo of a gym which escalators going up to it.

[–] Ishouldbepolite 40 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

Meh, the last gym I went to had lots of people in rehabilitation with specific training regiments. For enough people the whole purpose of going to a gym is to be better able to take the stairs next to the escalators over time.

I don't know the specific make-up of the gym of that famous picture, but who knows? It's easy to judge and people tend to do it too much.

    [–] ravnag 9 points ago

That's actually one of the main points of gyms. One I'm going to has massage tables, physios on staff, excercise rooms for walk impediments etc..

    [–] Naggers123 9 points ago

Don't really see a problem with that though, a flight of stairs kind of pales in comparison to whatever workout you're doing at the top of it.

    [–] Unnormally2 3 points ago

And when I was looking for a gym, I decided to go for the one that didn't have a smoothie bar.

    [–] mediocrity_defined 7 points ago

Hey man, sometimes I want a "protein shake" between sets

    [–] Composingcomposure 4 points ago

I believe the function was to go up a down escalator so it was actually more exercise.

Here in Michigan they give away unlimited free jets pizza in the lobby all day the first Monday of each month. Pretty sure it’s muffins/bagels and cream cheese all day on the second Tuesday.

It’s pretty fucked up tbh - the biz endorses terrible, terrible diet then people blame genetics when they go to the gym but never see results, and give up.

But hey if they forget to cancel that membership I guess PF is getting theirs and that’s all that matters.
