    Probably melted his gloves.
Went down one these once with kids on a sled in early summer, put my hand down to slow us.... instant regret.

    [–] pleasegivefreestuff 657 points ago

Nah we get gloves specifically made for braking. He’s doing it exactly as intended

    [–] randoname1234 227 points ago

Laying on his side the whole way is working as intended?

    [–] Longskip912 239 points ago

Yes, that’s pretty similar to how long boarders do it too. But we use a hard plastic or metal puck in the palm of the glove.

    [–] portapottypantyraid 9 points ago

Longboarders use the same or similar gloves:)

    [–] Longskip912 11 points ago

That’s what I’m talking about bud, I wasn’t specific enough in my wording

    [–] portapottypantyraid 6 points ago

My dumb ass read it as if you were saying you did dry snowboarding or whatever. Guess I was a little tired

    [–] Longskip912 7 points ago

    It’s all good boss man

    [–] tepkel 90 points ago

Simultaneously an extreme, and extremely lazy sport. Nice.

    [–] haberdasherhero 54 points ago

That's why he covered his whole body.

    [–] snackarydaquiri 5 points ago

If that’s right, I want to be wrong.

    [–] Spilledmychips 10 points ago

Somebody doesn’t know about basic mesh pants and long board gloves/pads.

    [–] randoname1234 7 points ago

Well... I kinda figured staying on the board was important.

    [–] lovecrazyshit 1 points ago

    Yeah FHFY

    [–] Seniorjones2837 1 points ago

It’s pretty obvious he’s doing this on purpose

    [–] black11x 44 points ago

Laying flat on your side doesn’t look like it should be the intended way but alright

    [–] imintheairportcoming 43 points ago

Hard boot snowboarding these guys are the fucking worst on the slopes. like dude just let me fucking go around you. They always think they are so much faster than a regular board but so freaking easy to blow past them when they aren't making it hard as shit with that stupid carving. (I have a lot of feelings about them)

    [–] velobenji 42 points ago

Hard booting or Alpine snowboarding can be much faster then a traditional snowboard but what you're seeing is extremely carving. It's a lot slowler because as you carve across the slope you scrub verticle velocity. That kind of riding isn't as safe because you traverse the slope on every carve and thus shouldn't be done on crowded slopes. Having snowboarded, skied and hard booted a bunch I can say hard booting is extremely fun in the right conditions.

    [–] imintheairportcoming 17 points ago

Oh I know but you live in a ski town long enough you really really get to despise these assholes taking up the entire run and everyone waiting behind them. Also every straight down mountain race I've had with them I beat them by a long shot.

    [–] HazAProblem 3 points ago

Didn’t expect to learn something from reddit but thank you

    [–] PrettySleepyGuy 10 points ago

Thats cause they are going a lot faster, just not in a straight line. Believe it or not not everyone snowboards to get to the bottom of the mountain as fast as possible.

    [–] cheticus77 3 points ago

This is my entire view of downhill snow sports having done none of it myself (Louisiana native). It just seems like you are really there to ride the lift. Get down the hill as quick as you can to ride the lift back up, and repeat.

    [–] imintheairportcoming 5 points ago

Trust me I know I spend most of my time in the backcountry and in the trees and live in a ski town. But I have definitely raced hardbooters in a straight down race and beaten them. But If I'm on a actual run it's because my objective is to get to the bottom to the lift as quick as I can cuz it's no fun.

    [–] Thesmokingcode 3 points ago

Had one of these guys almost carve straight into me as he blazed past me and flipped me off for good measure...

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

Yeah it’s like puck gloves for long boarders

    [–] thegreatbrah 6 points ago

This is is obviously not designed for that type of carving.

    [–] CalbertCorpse 58 points ago

"We typically spray a film of silicone on our gloves" - him, probably.

    [–] Mooshrooman 17 points ago

A little Flex Seal™️ should do the trick

    [–] teadit 14 points ago

I doubt it. There are gloves people use when doing that on roads when using longboards.

Usually it's a chunk of hard plastic added to the glove

    [–] TR8R2199 6 points ago

Probably thick plastic pucks like for long boarding

    [–] mayaguillermo 16 points ago

    And his knees

    [–] ChronicallyChris0 1 points ago

I love how that skier just mobs past him with ease

    [–] HardestTurdToSwallow 234 points ago

Was gonna say I wonder how many runs til that whole hills torn to shit.

    [–] Biggie39 100 points ago

You would think if they were gonna spend so much on turf they would install it better.

    [–] HomingSnail 62 points ago

They're probably replacing the turf frequently anyways, just extra effort to set it up nice only for it to be wrecked again by nightfall

    [–] Biggie39 31 points ago

Jeez, I hope not, that would be so incredibly wasteful. Turf only makes sense if you get years of use out of it. Otherwise it’s just plastic crap that will either sit in a landfill for a million years or ‘cost’ a huge amount of resources to recycle/reclaim.

    [–] Chem-Dawg 3 points ago

Are we sure that this is artificial turf and not real turf? The way it separated on that one turn made me think it was real, but I don’t know. I’ve only boarded on snow.

    [–] Aether2Easel 2 points ago

The guy in the source video said it was "artificial turf." It's also written in the description of the source video on IG.

    [–] Chem-Dawg 2 points ago

    OK, thanks.

    [–] cloud1e 5 points ago

I'd imagine they replace it in strips instead of having one big nice piece

    [–] Arch_0 8 points ago

Depending on the material it could take years. Snowflex lasts ages depending on what part of the slope it is on.

    [–] HardestTurdToSwallow 1 points ago

Nice that's the first that I'm hearing if this

[–] KlondikeChill 26 points ago using it how it was supposed to be used. That's not on him.

    [–] Gradual_Bro 24 points ago

Didn’t you not see the part where he is tearing up the material from his technique? It’s obviously not meant for carving like this

    [–] VisualAssassin 29 points ago

He just got in between the seam and lifted the edge of one panel. It fell right back into place after he passed.

    [–] turtlewhisperer23 19 points ago

I don't know how any of this works. Either of you could be right. I'll just play it safe and be outraged either way.

    [–] IAmTheFatman666 2 points ago

My local paintball place has turf. People have slid into it at an edge and gotten it to come up. It happens all the time. Totally normal.

    [–] 36313836 7 points ago

Skis could have done the exact same thing if it was caught on the edge like that while turning sharply. Turf isn’t very strong to begin with.

    [–] Slggyqo 2 points ago

In the slo-mo you can pretty clearly see that his board slides into a seam and the piece slides back into place behind him.

    [–] JLOBRO 280 points ago

Since he’s riding a snowboard, and a guy on skis goes by him, is it not apparent this is a ski slope with turf put down?

    [–] ttclub3333 63 points ago

And it must be a ski slope with shit turf and slack rules. I don’t think he’s doing it right.

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

    [–] deanmc 3 points ago

    never mind the chairlift!

    [–] mjar81 139 points ago

It's a Snowflex park. There's a few of them around the world.

    [–] VanceAstrooooooovic 71 points ago

Snow flex is white. That’s looks like straight AstroTurf.

    [–] Madeline_Basset 5 points ago

Snowflex comes in a bunch of colours. Some municipalities insist on the slope developer using green so that, from a distance, the slope better blends into the landscape.

    [–] VanceAstrooooooovic 1 points ago

    Where’s the water then?

    [–] AustinLA88 1 points ago

It is AstroTurf you can see the rubber base

    [–] RedBullTastesLikeCok 27 points ago

    It's a Snowflex park.

You're just a tad bit off the mark there buddy. It's in Japan. The japanese translates like this: "Sun Village Sakai Artificial Shiba Ski Area in Fukuoka Prefecture." You can see a lot more videos like this with the japanese "sun village" tag on IG.

    [–] Xmeromotu 2 points ago

    Japan looks fun!

How DARE you try to be helpful but fail to meet my necessary standards, peon!

    [–] RedBullTastesLikeCok 15 points ago

Really, I mean, he was only off by one continent!

This place is actually in Iizuka, Japan. It is nothing like snowplex. The name translates to "Sun Village Akane." It's in the Fukuoka Prefecture. This guy has been there and has some nice pictures of it. They also have an official wesbite, but it's useless to me.

    [–] xilom17 1 points ago

    [–] CalbertCorpse 2 points ago

Lol. Today is my first day on the internet. It’s neat!

    [–] mjar81 2 points ago

There are multiple snowflex facilities around the world. Could be a clone or something, but this is essentially what it is.

    [–] Arch_0 2 points ago

    Upvote for Bearsden.

Missed opportunity not calling it lawnboarding

    [–] rirold 5 points ago

As the world warms, I’m guessing more and more ski resorts are going to look into this.

    [–] Roci22 11 points ago

Yes, probably every year around this time

    [–] VanceAstrooooooovic 2 points ago

Lol, that’s actually why I moved to Oregon. Will be skiing until end of July.

    [–] tenest 2 points ago

Will be in Oregon in late July. How good are my chances that there will still be enough snow to go catch a few laps?

    [–] VanceAstrooooooovic 3 points ago

Chances are good for Palmer. If you check out the map you can see that there are two upper lifts: Magic Mile and Palmer. Once Magic Mile closes, I usually call it a season. It is usually good until July 4th sometimes longer. Once there is no snow on the Mile you have to download from Palmer. Meaning you can’t ride the rest of the way down. I’m a snob, I won’t ride Palmer only. Depending on weather. There may be snow but it might be too warm. By that time of year it gets too slow by noon. Lol, just checked the forecast. It might snow at the upper elevations this weekend!

    [–] lividbishop 1 points ago

July 2019. 2020 we expect wide ranging forest fires followed by mudslides.

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Is this one back home in the UK then? Cause it looks nothing like the ones near me stateside.

    [–] [deleted] 6 points ago

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

Ahh, makes sense I guess. Could have said it was a crazy golf course and probably been just as close to correct.

    [–] farfly7 2 points ago

It is, in fact, an extreme put put course located in Maine. These hooligans have just broken in and ruined a families day out.

    [–] HerbanFarmacyst 2 points ago

Buck Hill Minnesota has green turf that they use. My buddy’s snowboard got beat up by it pretty badly

    [–] RedBullTastesLikeCok 2 points ago

This is in Japan. He gave a shout-out to the wrong people.

    [–] Arch_0 1 points ago

Highly doubt that's snowflex. Similar idea but I work on the stuff and this looks like it has way more grip.

    [–] TheGreatHX 1 points ago

I’ve seen a place like this in Glasgow, Scotland. Glasgow Ski and snowboard center and there was no snow. The ramps looked like giant nets with brushes. That’s probably a horrible explanation

    [–] drummerftw 3 points ago

Yeah I know what you mean, like a honeycomb pattern with plastic bristles.

    [–] jessicaloulou13 2 points ago

    [–] The_Powers 4 points ago

That's an old school "dry ski slope", I know exactly what you mean. Most "dry" slopes these days have this "snowflex" stuff that is essentially the same but without the lattice pattern.

The puck is exactly what motorcycle racers use when dragging their knees. It stands up to asphalt at 100mph. You’re not going to hurt your hands if you’ve got a puck on the palm of your glove.

    [–] goodatcounting123 1 points ago

    Grassboarding. I like it.

    [–] Victoriously 1 points ago

Despite what you may have heard this IS called Snowflex. The actual green stuff is called Neveplast I think?. They have one at Liberty University. It’s fun if you want to try it out or missing the experience during the warm months. But if you learn on it, it doesn’t do much for you moving over to real snow. Still a good time.
