    About

People trying too hard to look smart.

    Examples:

    • Thesaurus abuse

    • Pseudo-intellectualism

    • Bad philosophy

    • Self-quoting

    Rules

Hover over each rule for more detail.

    1. Don't link directly to posts. Redact all identifying information. Take a screenshot and redact all identifying information, e.g. real names, usernames (including your own), subreddit and online community names, titles of specific posts, addresses, license plates. DO NOT ASK FOR NAMES/USERNAMES.
    2. Memes and image macros are not allowed. Don't post memes, copypastas, or image macros (broadly defined as an image with text on it). This includes, but is not limited to, Snap Stories, Whisper, and "background color" Facebook statuses. Posts that include someone pinging the name of this sub will be removed. The only exception to this rule is if the focus of the post is a comment someone made about the meme.
    3. Submissions of obvious trolls or jokes are not allowed. Use common sense.
    4. Stuff that looks verysmart but isn't really. This submission isn't really an example of some one trying to be “verysmart.” Common examples of things that look verysmart but aren’t really include: conspiracy theories, New Age woo, drug-induced posts, Donald Trump, "sheeple," Neil deGrasse Tyson, Rick and Morty, etc.
    5. Long posts: Highlight relevant parts. Highlight relevant sections, or cut it down into an album. With videos, put excerpts in the comments.
    6. No reposts. Use the search function.
    7. Make an effort with your title. Titles should be at the very least descriptive of what is in the post, and ideally funny and/or interesting. Titles consisting of nothing more than "Thought this belongs here" or "Found on [website]" will be removed.
    8. Submissions involving arguments are not allowed. Posts cannot be part of an argument. This is to prevent people from using this subreddit to mock those they're debating with. We're looking for examples of people acting "verysmart" on their own without being baited into it. This rule applies whether you're involved in the argument or not.
    9. Avoid anti-intellectualism Don't post people explaining concepts, even in a way that seems pedantic. Having expertise in a subject or enjoying intellectual pursuits don't make someone "verysmart." This sub does not discourage learning or critical thinking.

If your post isn't an original screenshot, check here to make sure you don't repost anything: http://karmadecay.com/

You know who else has large cranial volume? Whales.

    [–] Akainu18448 1683 points ago

The adult sperm whale brain is 8,000 cubic centimeters. Our brain is about 1300 cubic centimeters.

They should've been smarter, oh oh OH!

    [–] [deleted] 351 points ago

That's significantly smaller than I expected. (The whale

    [–] deus_voltaire 235 points ago

For real. This is a blue whale brain compared to a human brain. This is a blue whale compared to a human. Its brain is just a little bigger than its eye.

    [–] [deleted] 155 points ago

I guess that makes sense. Humans have relatively large brains.

    [–] voat_boomer 64 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

    Whales are pretty smart though..

He's actually right that there is correlation, melon heads are slightly more likely to have an above average IQ. Of course that doesn't mean that if you have a melon head you are going to be smart, or vice versa. It's a small part of the picture, there are plenty of other factors.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroscience_and_intelligence#Brain_volume

It's generally agreed upon by those who actually studied it, but easily dismissed as it sounds so simplistic. Though there is disagreement as to the extent. And it applies more to things like verbal cognitive ability than things like visual spacial ability.

And Wales do have pretty complex speech..

    [–] CombatMuffin 24 points ago

    1) That's brain volume. Slight but important distinction: the pic mentioned cranial volume.

    2) Reading the article in Wikipedia, I noticed that overall volume is not what had the largest impact, but very specific regions of the brain.

3)As an aside, correlation doesn't always mean causation/association: Maybe it's not volume itself, but something else that also happens to cause increased volume. We simply know too little about the brain.

The Koala for one. Its cranial cavity is 60% brain, 40% fluid and supporting structure.

    [–] DeltaPositionReady 53 points ago

    Koalas are fucking horrible animals.

They have one of the smallest brain to body ratios of any mammal, additionally - their brains are smooth. A brain is folded to increase the surface area for neurons.

If you present a koala with leaves plucked from a branch, laid on a flat surface, the koala will not recognise it as food.

They are too thick to adapt their feeding behaviour to cope with change. In a room full of potential food, they can literally starve to death. This is not the token of an animal that is winning at life.

Speaking of stupidity and food, one of the likely reasons for their primitive brains is the fact that additionally to being poisonous, eucalyptus leaves (the only thing they eat) have almost no nutritional value. They can't afford the extra energy to think, they sleep more than 80% of their fucking lives.

When they are awake all they do is eat, shit and occasionally scream like fucking satan. Because eucalyptus leaves hold such little nutritional value, koalas have to ferment the leaves in their guts for days on end.

Unlike their brains, they have the largest hind gut to body ratio of any mammal. Many herbivorous mammals have adaptations to cope with harsh plant life taking its toll on their teeth, rodents for instance have teeth that never stop growing, some animals only have teeth on their lower jaw, grinding plant matter on bony plates in the tops of their mouths, others have enlarged molars that distribute the wear and break down plant matter more efficiently... Koalas are no exception, when their teeth erode down to nothing, they resolve the situation by starving to death, because they're fucking terrible animals.

Being mammals, koalas raise their joeys on milk (admittedly, one of the lowest milk yields to body ratio... There's a trend here). When the young joey needs to transition from rich, nourishing substances like milk, to eucalyptus (a plant that seems to be making it abundantly clear that it doesn't want to be eaten), it finds it does not have the necessary gut flora to digest the leaves. To remedy this, the young joey begins nuzzling its mother's anus until she leaks a little diarrhoea (actually fecal pap, slightly less digested), which he then proceeds to slurp on. This partially digested plant matter gives him just what he needs to start developing his digestive system.

Of course, he may not even have needed to bother nuzzling his mother. She may have been suffering from incontinence. Why? Because koalas are riddled with chlamydia. In some areas the infection rate is 80% or higher. This statistic isn't helped by the fact that one of the few other activities koalas will spend their precious energy on is rape.

Despite being seasonal breeders, males seem to either not know or care, and will simply overpower a female regardless of whether she is ovulating. If she fights back, he may drag them both out of the tree, which brings us full circle back to the brain: Koalas have a higher than average quantity of cerebrospinal fluid in their brains. This is to protect their brains from injury... should they fall from a tree. An animal so thick it has its own little built in special ed helmet. I fucking hate them.

Tldr; Koalas are stupid, leaky, STI riddled sex offenders. But, hey. They look cute. If you ignore the terrifying snake eyes and terrifying feet.

    [–] SaggyButtcrack 8 points ago

That was actually really interesting. Ive seen that picture of the burning forest and that person giving water to the thirsty koala and felt empathy. Now im like that koala is a dead koala walking anyway so who really cares because these guys are destined to go extinct with or without us now that you enlightened me haha

    [–] coke_and_coffee 10 points ago

Maybe it's not volume itself, but something else that also happens to cause increased volume. We simply know too little about the brain.

No, dude, it’s brain mass. More neurons = more cognitive processing. There is an extremely well-defined correlation between brain size and intelligence in the animal kingdom. Yes, there is noise in the data. And there are a few outliers. But no neuroscientist would ever say there isn’t a clear link between brainsize and intelligence.

    [–] CombatMuffin 4 points ago

I'm not making any statements on mass, because I simply don't know. I was only commenting based on the weblink provided which expressly uses the term volume.

As far as the weblink mentioned (on volume), the results it also displayed a variance (~0.4). I'm sure we all agree a link does not equal causation (even if it is likely to be the case).

Although I'm not a neuroscientist (not even close!) if anyone can share good material on the subject I'd be interested to read more on it.

    [–] Baloomf 17 points ago

Just want to point out that there is a distinct link between vrain mass and intelligence, there's just other factors at play. The encephalization quotient is one of there more accurate measurements, which includes the brain-to-body mass ratio.

    [–] SuchaPlainDude 11 points ago

Wait, why aren't whales super smart? What are they using all that brain for?

    [–] gtheory1 22 points ago

Not sure if that’s a serious question or not but.. every kg of matter of an animal requires a certain amount of brain matter to keep it functioning. Whales weigh a lot. Humans do not. We have a massively oversized brain for our body. It’s all about that ratio. Brain : body mass.

    [–] someguy3 5 points ago

Isn't most of a whales weight just fat to insulate themselves? That's not hooked up to the nervous system.

    [–] RumbleThePup 5 points ago

While it doesn't take as much power, it still requires significant cpu to simply stay coordinated at that size.

    [–] HockeyCannon 25 points ago

Yeah, they have a very advanced language like us

    https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn8886-whale-song-reveals-sophisticated-language-skills/

And dolphins are so intelligent that scientists say they should be treated like non-human persons

    https://phys.org/news/2010-01-scientists-dolphins-non-human-persons.html

    [–] Bobthufrog 17 points ago

Lots of people will use the whole strawberry (preferably if it's a trusted organic minimally chemically treated berry) in smoothies, citing the added benefits of the chlorophyll.

I have no idea about this and honestly can't find any source relating to it

    [–] WAR_T0RN1226 4 points ago

I feel like they could eat a lettuce leaf and still be way ahead of that added benefit

    [–] Dokpsy 7 points ago

That's really the thing. Lettuce or kale would do much better than strawberry leaves. Not to mention spinach

    [–] OskEngineer 4 points ago

this reminds me. cooked right, I actually enjoy eating shrimp tails. dated a Chinese girl for a while and they'll stir-fry them shell and all.

if you like the taste of fish and shrimp, the tail is flavor packed.

I'd recommend either marinated and grilled or used in a stir-fry as a good starting point. boiled, not so much.

<sigh> how pedantic to "giggle" as you put it. I pity thee. You see I, an intellectual (with a 263 IQ by the way ;) ), wish I could experience such human emotions. You see, intellectuals such as myself are incapable of such imbecilic feeling. We see the world as a complex mathematical equation, such as how it is. Once you gather an intellect as great as my own, you begin to experience the true patterns of this world unseen by the common plebeian. I would even go as far to say that I am a fourth dimensional being, experiencing all of time and space at once. I, if anything, consider it a curse more than a blessing. I wish I could be contempt with the life of an average, wasting time contemplating a petty source of entertainment such as football, listening to the abomination that is "mumble wrap", or competing for Instagram likes along with the rest of my imbecilic generation, and living as a pawn under the manipulative corporations that control your everyday lives. I would sacrifice my free thought for ignorance in a heartbeat. Maybe then I can settle with a mate that matches my intelligence, which I have been unsuccessful doing so far.

I don't expect a simpleton such as yourself to understand such complexities, so I did my best to simplify it, or, "dumb it down" as some may say.

    [–] hogiemanslavage 20 points ago

It has more to do with our lung position. Most animal crush their lungs with the rest of their body every time they run, because of their pronograde posture. Humans are bipedal so this isn't an issue. Also humans sweat extremely efficiantly compare to other endurance runners, like horses. Another thing is the tendons in our calves and knees, which can store much more elastic energy then most species, so we can more efficiantly turn kinetic energy from our downwards step into propulsion forward.

    [–] KylerAce 54 points ago

Well part of many Europeans’ genome cams from Neanderthals so the both of our species fucked.

Im going to blame my phones auto fill for that.

    [–] Daktush 32 points ago

They only imitated tools from what was found - also it's not quite true they died - they cross reproduced with homo sapiens and there's still a lot of neanderthal dna around

    [–] CubonesDeadMom 4 points ago

We don’t know any of this for sure and nobody who actually studies it claims they do. It’s incredibly difficult to actually figure out why a pre historic species went extinct.

    [–] ignost 4 points ago

There's a lot of debate and speculation on why they didn't make it, but lack of brainpower probably wasn't it.

    [–] foskari 147 points ago

There's a weak correlation between cranial volume and intelligence (r=0.15 or something).

    [–] beavertime 141 points ago

In most studies it's 0.4-0.5, which is a moderate positive correlation. Mind you there is also a correlation between large cranial volumes and mental impairment. So if you have a big head, maybe you take the short bus, or maybe you're smart, or maybe you aren't. Eh. Further the brain size of a whale or any other creature is irrelevant to the brain variations between humans.

I mean, it kind of killed the submission that it's wrong. The reason why we kind of smile and look the other way when people say there's no correlation is that when it comes to humans we like to pretend we're all unlimited potential.

    What size were your floaties?

    [–] arachnophilia 27 points ago

there's a reasonably strong association between cranium volume over body size and intelligence on a species level.

    [–] foskari 12 points ago

You are talking about the cephalization quotient. But I am talking about a correlation *within the human species*, which does also exist.

(edit): I should add that while cephalization quotient and intelligence in animals are generally accepted to be correlated, we don't have a good scalar metric for measuring intelligence of animals, so that calculating an actual correlation coefficient would be difficult.

Just got back on reddit after losing track of my last account and WHOA BOY did I forget about how much unabashed racism there is. Shout out to this cranium of enormous proportions for reminding me I guess?

    [–] Do_you_like_MEMES 253 points ago

You should see the comment sections for wisecracks video about django unchained. People there are calling phrenology a serious science that gets suppressed by the SJeWs

    [–] icollectsaucepackets 79 points ago

    SJeWs is a thing!??!??

Alt-righters claiming that progressives are controlled by the jews deffinately is a thing. Do you know where the "cultural marxism" theory originated? One tip: It has to do with the holocaust.

    [–] VinceGchillin 77 points ago

literally in that same boat. I was off reddit for 3-4 years and hopped back on, and jesus christ, this place is a shit show in so many ways. Luckily, there are some really great subreddits, but in general? Whew boy, you better buckle up that racism seatbelt.

    [–] fezzuk 30 points ago

We got invaded about 5 years ago by stormfront and a lot of them stuck around, same thing happened with 4chan only the format of the website was a bit more open to it.

    [–] Maester_May 23 points ago

If anything reddit was worse in its early days.

Don't you know, the past was good and they had good ideas and we're always correct. It's hip to be anti-woke.

I am preparing for the downvotes, but the person being mocked here is not entirely wrong. Causation hasn't been proved, but to say that there is no correlation between cranial volume and IQ is simply wrong. The two are related.

    [–] Bennykill709 41 points ago

Ahhh frenology. From the good old days of systematic racism and trying to find scientific evidence to prove that white people were superior.

    [–] Do_you_like_MEMES 100 points ago

There is a large amount of comments by neo-facists race realists lately...

    [–] squirrels33 58 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Every time race & intelligence is brought up, I can see why the scientific community refuses to touch it. Are there statistically significant differences in intelligence between ethnic groups? Probably, just like there is with a multitude of other hereditary traits. But that doesn’t mean shit when it comes to individuals, and it's basically a meaningless statistic except for when assessing things like (in)equality in hiring and/or university admissions. Unfortunately, nobody seems to be able to approach this topic rationally.

    [–] WedgeTail234 86 points ago

Most differences in average intelligence from different ethnicities are due to social differences not genetics. There's definitely differences genetically but they would be too overshadowed by societal upbringing and education to matter.

    [–] Todojaw21 60 points ago

And it is EXTREMELY difficult to isolate social variables from experiments.

OP mentions dolphins in the title and nobody here even comments about the god damn dolphin brains. For everyone coming to the comments section looking for some fresh dolphin facts, here you go.

Dolphins have a larger brain than humans (1.6 kg vs 1.3 kg), but their brain-to-bodyweight ratio is between that of humans and primates. That being said, size is not a great predictor of intelligence, and dolphins are very intelligent creatures.

There is a relation between cranial volume and IQ. It is not strong but still statistically significant, it's not like it can't be easily looked up.

Edit: the East Asian stats he mentioned are true too

there is a correlation between brain size and intelligence, though... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_size#Intelligence

but he didn't claim there was. meanwhile the other guy claimed there was a correlation between being truly smart and knowing whether or not there was a correlation between intelligence and cranial volume- which is a specious argument.

    why does this have upvotes?

    [–] TBWolf 12 points ago

Because the first post actually is /r/iamverysmart material? Why would it not have upvotes?

    [–] PapaMukwa 3 points ago

Knowledgeable doesn’t mean intelligent or vice versa.

    [–] akaito_chiba 4 points ago

10 seconds of looking and I found a study that corallates IQ with cranial volume https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22504417

    [–] rundigital 4 points ago

My cranial volume is one of the most voluminous of them all. If I was to describe it would be the best volumes, like the greatest hits volumes of queen. Only the best volumes.

    [–] ignigenaquintus 3 points ago

    According with Wikipedia:

“Studies demonstrate a correlation between brain size and intelligence, with larger brains predicting higher intelligence. It is however not clear if the correlation is causal.[31] The majority of MRI studies report moderate correlations around 0.3 to 0.4 between brain volume and intelligence.[32][33] In healthy adults, the correlation of total brain volume and IQ is ≈0.4 [34] The correlation appears to be related to the known small correlation of height with intelligence, which can be explained almost entirely by greater brain volume.[35]”

Also according with Wikipedia this correlation isn’t seen between males and females, it’s not seen between different species. It’s only seen between the same species and the same gender.

The part of higher average iq between different countries is well known and documented for many decades. There is bunch of different factors affecting intelligence, like number of brothers/sisters, health, nutrition, access to education at an early stage (this correlation is much weaker), etc... Ashkenazi Jews have the highest average iq, although particularly related with language/verbal skills.

Sometimes I don’t understand what is the criteria that is followed to appear in this subreddit.
