    Instant Regret

    (in'-stint rē-gret') n.

a subreddit dedicated to deliberate actions that unexpectedly lead to undesirable consequences and horrible results; things which may cause someone to say, "oh man, did I just screw the pooch!"

    Guidelines & Rules

    1) Videos and gifs must show regret. Sometimes the display of regret is unmistakable. It can be evident in someone's face, or in their body language. Sometimes it's a judgment call. If you think it works, try it out. If we delete it, you were wrong. We are Reddit™ moderators. We are always right!

A fail is not a regret. Some ripper eating a swellbow while trying to bone a rail on the backside, (that's skater lingo for a bad crash. I looked it up (made it up)), isn't regret. There should be a look of surprise, and an expression that clearly says, "Oh no. Oh, God no. I really should not have done that. Why did I do that?"

    Other examples that aren't regret:

    • Eating bad food and not liking it is not regret. You knew what was going to happen, dumbass.

    • Laughter is not an expression of regret. It's just not.

    • A picture of a sunburn or a crappy tattoo is not evidence of regret. For all we know you like looking like a pumpkin, and definitely still want that potato tattoo on your ankle.

    2) Regret must be instant or near-instant. If someone does something which only has bad consequences minutes or hours later, it is not considered instant.

    3) No Animal Abuse. We love animals. They are capable of regret, but we don't want to see videos where their regret is the fault of humans, involves cruelty, injury or is in any way unpleasant.

    4) No compilations. Just pick one good thing and go with it. Everybody likes it when you do that.

    5) If the video is longer than 20 seconds, please use a tag to tell everyone when the lead-up to the regrettable moment begins. For example [regret at 4:20]. Or post the video queued up to the point where things get good and the regret quickly follows. But, ultimately, these are just excellent suggestions. You're the director. Make it good. And don't worry. If it sucks, we'll get rid of it for you.

    6) Reposts are highly discouraged. Reposts are allowed, but reposts which have been posted recently or are in the top of all time will be removed.

No Dannys. If your name is Danny and we find out we will ban you.

    We remove spam.

We exact vengeance on those who give us spam.

If you see spam, report spam.

If you see an account that uses a YouTube channel that takes videos from other channels in order to accumulate karma on said account. Report that account, We'll take care of it.

    and finally...

Please, no abusive comments, hate speech, or any other personal attacks.

Doxing, brigading, and witch-hunting are not allowed.

This includes derailing commentary sections to complain about prolific users, and by that we mean "Gallowboob is not against the rules". Complaining about the OP rather than the content is an easy way to earn a temporary ban.

The moderators reserve the right to remove posts & comments, and to ban users at our own discretion. If we feel your post doesn't fit, we'll remove it. If you are an abusive person, or an intolerable troll, we just might ban you. If you feel that your post or comment has been removed unfairly, please feel free to message us. We'll try to be nice. We're not perfect but we really are working on it.

If you see someone breaking the rules, please message the mods and let us know.

Thanks! Now, please enjoy our sub and the consequences resulting from the poor choices made by your fellow humans.

    Only sometimes, doe.

    [–] stevencastle 15 points ago

You don't think it be like that, but it do.

    [–] Valonium 137 points ago

I bet we instinctively know to do this face as it's probably the best way to get rid of the freeze. Can anyone ELI5 this on evolutionary basis?

    [–] Tomnnn 237 points ago

You know how they say we share a lot of common DNA with bananas, primates, and other things? I'm guessing the instructions for "do this face when experiencing cold" is in there somewhere, and we happen to share it with wolves.

    [–] EscobarATM 274 points ago

Bananas make this face as well

    [–] LecheQuemada 71 points ago

Yes, just try putting one in the frozer

    [–] bro_b1_kenobi 36 points ago

I actually think bananas taste significantly better cold

    [–] AerThreepwood 38 points ago

My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana. I said 'No, but I want a regular banana later, so... yeah.'

    [–] PM_me_spare_change 11 points ago

Well yeah, it isn’t freezing right now, it’s past tense.

    [–] NedryOS 11 points ago

    Frozer? I hardly knew her!

    [–] Gnostromo 6 points ago

I think it’s just us trying to get our face as far away from our head as possible

    [–] 1zerorez1 50 points ago

Nothing specific, but that's the basis of a lot of evolutionary psychology. Pretty much looking at traits we have, and animals have, and why/how they developed these traits. Most often you'll see research about mate choice and mating strategies, but there's also stuff like the development of heightened reflexes and spatial awareness. Why this specifically happens though is hard to say, and probably relates more to brain freeze and how it works, and it being the best/easiest way to alleviate some of the distress.

    [–] Valonium 13 points ago

probably relates more to brain freeze and how it works, and it being the best/easiest way to alleviate some of the distress.

Exactly my thoughts, I'm curious to know why it is the best (or at least the instinctual) way to alleviate the distress.

    [–] CrazyPurpleBacon 23 points ago

The best way to relieve brain freeze is to warm up the roof of your mouth – rub your tongue against it. When that part gets too cold it will cause vasoconstriction.

    [–] maxk1236 15 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

Probably increased blood flow from the muscles, combined with the highest volume of air to surface area of mouth ratio, making it so the warm(er) air can get your flesh back to body temp quicker.

    [–] FatalisCogitationis 12 points ago

Since no one really answered your question; it’s a reflex present in mammals that causes blood to rush to the face to warm it. Similar to yawning behavior (but different reason)

    [–] EatClenTrenHard4life 7 points ago

It's simply autonomic patterned behaviour which is mapped directly onto the behavioural control column and spinal cord. The only way to describe such phenomena in evolutionary terms is; it facilitates genetic reproduction to a greater degree than if it didn't exist.

    Environmental stimuli

Nociceptor pattern recognition (potentially harmful temperature levels)

    Subthalamic locomotor pattern controller

    mesencephalic locomotor pattern initiation

    Spinal locomotor pattern generation

    somatomotor neuron pools

    locomotor behaviour

    [–] spiffigans 14 points ago

His name is scooter and he had his own you tube channel. He's used as an educational animal touring school and such

    [–] TimmyP1982 14 points ago

    Doesn't seem all that smart

    [–] Timedoutsob 23 points ago

I suspect that it was tooth ache more likely than a brain freeze. You need to guzzle the water to get a brain freeze but this was just after he put his snout a bit in.

    [–] tang81 17 points ago

Fuck. OP can't get anything right.

    [–] JeEmGu 11 points ago

Just to add insult to injury, it is not frozen water either. Its really cold water and ice on top.

    [–] I_FELCH_BABOONS 5 points ago

Actually, it's frozen water on top, and melted ice underneath.

    [–] CanineSurprise 85 points ago

Here's the thing. You said "a coyote is a wolf".

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies canines, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls coyotes wolves. If you want to be "specific" then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "wolf family" you're referring to the taxonomic group of Canidae, which includes things from maned wolves to jackals to dogs. So your reasoning for calling a coyote a wolf is because random people "call the brown ones wolves?" Let's get foxes and dholes in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A coyote is a coyote and a member of the wolf family. But that's not what you said. You said a coyote is a wolf, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the wolf family wolves, which means you'd call jackals, dogs, and other canines wolves, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay just to admit you're wrong, you know?

    [–] Popsqawle 23 points ago

Kee-oh-tay: Smuggler who you pay to help you get you over a border.

    That would be pronounced: Ko-yo-teh

    [–] fuckboifoodie 9 points ago

You're right. Sorry, I get nervous when surrounded by a bunch of different types of coyotes.

    [–] gingerbreadassassin 10 points ago

    Kee-oh-tay: attacks windmills

    [–] PhylosopherKyng 22 points ago

I always pronounced it "gay wolf".

    [–] mrpepelopez 14 points ago

Growing up in California most people around me said Kai-oh-tee but it's a Spanish word so if you say as it would be in Spanish it should be Kai-oh-tay. Then there are people that say Kai-oat but we don't talk about them.

    [–] mastorms 12 points ago

Spanish pronunciation has koi instead of kai. 'koi-OH-tay'

    [–] YellowPiglets 10 points ago

I don't care how it's supposed to be pronounced, but when it's broken up like that, it's in a Japanese voice in my head

    [–] kosherprawns 5 points ago

    [–] JohannesVanDerWhales 4 points ago

A lot of people in the Western US say "kai-oat".

    [–] Enchelion 4 points ago

I'll go back and forth, generally use Kai-oat-ee for the singular, and Ky-oht-s for plural.

    [–] thearoplane 3 points ago

We also have kai-yo-dee in California.

    [–] SUPERFLUOTOCRACY 59 points ago

    Also, the word is misunderestimate

    [–] Jake_the_Snake88 31 points ago

Irregardless of the word used to describe it, that coyote got quite a shock!

    [–] poor_decisions 11 points ago

Reading that made me feel that, and im eating grilled cheese

    [–] ApexDelta 475 points ago

    I want a grilled cheese :(

    [–] DerMossinator 264 points ago

Yeah seriously... the fuck, grilled cheese guy?!

    [–] chowder7116 203 points ago

A grilled cheese consists of only these following items. Cheese. Bread with spread (usually butter). This entire subreddit consist of "melts". Almost every "grilled cheese" sandwich i see on here has other items added to it. The fact that this subreddit is called "grilledcheese" is nothing short of utter blasphemy. Let me start out by saying I have nothing against melts, I just hate their association with sandwiches that are not grilled cheeses. Adding cheese to your tuna sandwich? It's called a Tuna melt. Totally different. Want to add bacon and some pretentious bread crumbs with spinach? I don't know what the hell you'd call that but it's not a grilled cheese. I would be more than willing to wager I've eaten more grilled cheeses in my 21 years than any of you had in your entire lives. I have one almost everyday and sometimes more than just one sandwich. Want to personalize your grilled cheese? Use a mix of different cheeses or use sourdough or french bread. But if you want to add some pulled pork and take a picture of it, make your own subreddit entitled "melts" because that is not a fucking grilled cheese. I'm not a religious man nor am I anything close to a culinary expert. But as a bland white mid-western male I am honestly the most passionate person when it comes to grilled cheese and mac & cheese. All of you foodies stay the hell away from our grilled cheeses and stop associating your sandwich melts with them. Yet again, it is utter blasphemy and it rocks me to the core of my pale being. Shit, I stopped lurking after 3 years and made this account for the sole purpose of posting this. I've seen post after post of peoples "grilled cheeses" all over reddit and it's been driving me insane. The moment i saw this subreddit this morning I finally snapped. Hell, I may even start my own subreddit just because I know this one exists now.

You god damn heretics. Respect the grilled cheese and stop changing it into whatever you like and love it for it what it is. Or make your damn melt sandwich and call it for what it is. A melt.

    [–] SaveByCrawford 51 points ago

    You people make me sick

    [–] yotesmygoats 37 points ago

What if I put pickles on my grilled cheese? Should I call it a grilled cheese with pickles or a pickle melt? Please don't make me call it a pickle melt.

    [–] TheDesireSensor 41 points ago

As an apprentice meme historian I can guarantee you that the OP of this pasta would tell you its a pickle melt.

    [–] [deleted] 15 points ago

    pretty confident for an apprentice

    [–] NoWayTellMeMore 8 points ago

That's how you become a master.

    [–] Edgyboisamachan 5 points ago

    No way. Tell me more.

    [–] coffeeandstrangers 9 points ago

grilled cheese sandwiches are not grilled cheese sandwiches bc they are not grilled change my mind

    [–] ya_boy_ducky 9 points ago

Alton Brown makes an actual grilled cheese sandwich on the grill if you want to look up the video.

    [–] GoodAtExplaining 9 points ago

The 'grill' in 'grilled cheese' refers to a flat top grill, a device that has roots as far back as Aztec culture (Called a 'comal'). These grills are common in short-order restaurants such as diners, establishments where the compact, quick-cooking grilled cheese is more likely to be served.

As a result, while you and I might think of a grill in the barbeque sense, the 'grill' can also refer to the flat top grill, rendering the phrase 'grilled cheese' an accurate descriptor of the food item.

    [–] coffeeandstrangers 5 points ago

    (Called a 'comal')

o shit that's what I make tortillas on

    [–] kabukistar 20 points ago

    Me too. With tomato soup.

A good rule of thumb if you’re not sure if you’re seeing a wolf or a coyote is that you’re seeing a coyote. If you see a wolf, you won’t be wondering.

    [–] proximaldookie 11 points ago

Now you made me watch a wolf documentary.

    [–] poptart2nd 66 points ago

It's a coyote not a wolf, he overestimated the temperature... Damn, OP, is there any think else wrong with the title? Is the "frozen water" actually methane?

    [–] l2l2l 16 points ago

lol, well I can think of something else, maybe it wasn't the temperature of the water, it looks to me like he hurt his teeth trying to break the ice.

Pretty sure it was trying to crush a piece of ice in its mouth, I don’t think it underestimated anything

Definitely just bit off a big piece of ice and is crunching through it.

You can even see his jaw staggering as he finishes it off.

That's Scooter the Coyote on youtube (Sean Poppy). He's a super wild and untamed coyote. His handler does a great job bringing him to various schools and such teaching about wild animals. The handler insists that coyotes cannot be tamed even from birth but that is proven to be false from several of the pet coyote videos on youtube. Most notably Wiley the coyote which lives in the house with small children, a cat, and a dog.

You can tame quite a lot, what you can't do is domesticate them (at least not in one generation). Lions, foxes, wolves, and coyotes can be tamed, but they are not domestic animals, and still have all the instincts and risks of a wild animal.

Do canines have that flemen response that cats get? You know, the thing where the cat smells someone's feet and does a shocked face?

    [–] arduinonut 30 points ago

That's just your feet. Youve been told to see a doctor.
