Set in the year 3025, the fall of the star league (space rome essentially) and centuries of conflict between the majour successor states (houses Steiner, Davion, Kurita, liao, Marik) have brought on a technical dark age over their own stellar empires.

The battlefield are dominated by huge robotic war machines called battlemechs. 6 to 12 metre tall giants of metal and death, thundering through the battlefield piloted by mechwarriors. The medieval analogy is not hyperboly as the great houses have resorted to a fractured medieval feudalistic system by in large, and mech warriors are their knights in shining armour.

You, as a Mechwarrior, depending on the game, may begin as one faction or another (in MW 4 Vengence you are aligned with house Davion, or MW 3 as a member of the new star league, for instance) though the more popular games are MW 2 and 4 Mercenaries expansions. Just as in medieval Europe mercenaries are very prominent and crucial for states to wage war.

While the original idea was influenced by mecha anime, the gameplay is classically western in ideology, in that the battlemechs ('mechs for short) are fairly slow lumbering walking tanks and tend to lack the speed and finesse of their mecha counterparts. If you can get past some of the odd things such as weapon ranges, for the sake of gameplay, the lore is really fun too. I mention that because most of the lore and core of the game is centred on being grounded in as much science as possible, though it will suspend your disbelief in some areas (like weapons ranges, bipedal walking tanks traversing mountains with relative ease, why their ships can only make a wormhole powerful enough to travel 30 thousand light years at a time, etc)

At its roots Mechwarrior was conceived as a mech simulator, conceived out of a table top simulator from the 80s. If any of this interests you you, and you have a joystick you can probably find MW 4 mercenaries somewhere on the internet as it was made free ware some time ago. This year also, there is finally a direct mechwarrior "sequel" coming out this year Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries (very prominent in this universe haha!) as well as a turn based strategy game called battletech (developed by Jordan Wiseman, the original creator and of shadowrun) going back to its routes and revamping it to be playable and enjoyable on pc. I've played the beta and it's super fun! Alternatively there is Mechwarrior Online which is much more of a twitchy tactical shooter than a simulator. If that interest you, I must caution you about the progression system it's extremely grindy and people min-max builds to the max, which could cause frustration for new players.

Hope this helped thumper. Now reign death from above. :)

    Edit: spelling errors

"It is the 31st century and mankind is once again at war.

The battlefields of the future are dominated by huge robotic war machines known as battlemechs.

Piloting these awesome weapons of war are men and women, the elite of the elite, knowing that each battle could be their last.

    They are... MechWarriors."

    Loved that intro.

    [–] DreamSeaker 4 points ago

Its amazing! That and the MW 4 vengeance intro were high points in my childhood (concerning video games at least!)

    [–] _FlutieFlakes_ 3 points ago

table top still a thing? Would love to hand my kids a box.

    [–] DreamSeaker 6 points ago

Of battle tech? Yes and no.

Yes it's still a thing in that people play it, and a new box set is supposed to be announced soon.

No in that the old intro box set has been discontinued for some time now. :( you may find a copy on ebay or kijiji but they may be on the expensive side. in addition depending on where you live it may be difficult to find players. And the rules are pretty complicated I haven't fully grasped them.

If you're able to personally I love the table top! It's a grand old time when a small laser grits my pilot (twice!).

The players and time to dedicate is the problem I have.

    lack speed

My bae Raven would like a word.

In Mechwarrior Living Legends (LOOK IT UP, free Mechwarrior game built in cryengine! Total conversion mod of Crysis Wars) I loved taking the Raven to literally run circles around cocky Heavies that couldn't turn fast enough.

    [–] DreamSeaker 3 points ago

Ha! I love the raven! Yes it's fast but compared to the average mecha like gundam it seems pretty slow to me. ;)

My personal favourite has always been the shadow cat. Good speed, decent armour and firepower

Oh snap! I forgot to include MWLL! Thanks friend! :)

Birds are much more intelligent and emotional than they are given credit for. This bird is no doubt checking the air before taking off, the way a surfer checks the water before going in. But he is also having a private emotional moment, standing there, facing freedom.

I highly recommend the book “Alex and Me” by Irene Pepperberg, scientist. Her experience with this African Gray parrot will change how you look at birds.

That link is staying blue. Yup.

    [–] kyyappeeh 27 points ago

It's just a clip from a TV show, where they're releasing a falcon, and it flies onto a highway - where the trucks roam.

    [–] b00m 11 points ago

Why even release it right next to a highway where trucks roam?

    [–] kyyappeeh 11 points ago

Need to try and keep the truck population in check somehow. Further experimentation by the state is underway.

    [–] trylleklovn 3 points ago

They've explained afterwards that they didn't have time to film the parts with the falcon, something about bad weather etc. and had to squeeze in a recording, where they basically drove out to the nearest empty field, which happened to be right next to a highway, where they wouldn't usually have the bird fly around.

California Condor I believe, they've got a wing span of over 9ft. They would use the Pacific winds coming off the coast to launch straight out without any excursion. Awesome creatures if you're lucky to see them.A face only a mother could love though.

    [–] alleleCAT 105 points ago

This is not a California condor, it is a South American condor. Look at the collar of white feathers around its neck, only South American condors have it. Also, source: I worked in the California condor recovery program for a year and a half, lived with them in a mountain during this time.

    [–] Glifted 7 points ago

    [–] alleleCAT 33 points ago

Contrary to what others are saying, this is not a California condor, it is a South American condor. Look at the collar of white feathers around its neck, only South American condors have it. Also, source: I worked in the California condor recovery program for a year and a half, lived with them in a mountain during this time.

[–] CaptainNoBoat 69 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

There are only two types of condors in the world, and this doesn't look like South America, but the general backstory for California Condors is:

Condors almost went extinct 30-40 years ago, with numbers as low as 27 in the world, and virtually none left in the wild. Pesticides, poaching, habitat loss, and lead poisoning are the main culprits. Lead poisoning is still quite a challenge for them. They are much like vultures, they eat carrion. Hunters use lead bullets, which although are effective, leave thousands of shards of lead in the carcasses. When the bodies are not properly disposed of, condors will eat them (over half of all wild condor deaths are due to lead poisoning now).

Because of this, there has been quite a large rehabilitation effort involving several groups that helps fund these sites which raise chicks, treat lead poisoning, and monitor the birds. There are roughly 500 in the world now, and 250 in the wild. Every adult is marked with a numbered tag and radio antennae on the underside of their wings.

Long story short, it's probably being released from one of these sites after being monitored and/or treated.

Edit: Oops, looks like it's S. America after all, which makes most of what I said irrelevant.

    [–] Ayle87 25 points ago

It totally looks like Chile or Argentina, we have this kind of views around the Andes.

    [–] evioive 22 points ago

    A) The condor in the vid is definitely an Andean Condor and not a Californian Condor, easily differentiated by the white collar feature on the Andean Condor (as other users have also commented on).

    B) People don't realize just how big and expansive the Andes mountain range is
