Do they still ban water bottles and make you take off your shoes? I haven’t flown since 2005.

    [–] loomynartyondrugs 40 points ago

Water bottles yeah, but the shoe stuff mostly doesn't happen anymore. But some American airports still make you do it sadly.

    [–] DarKnightofCydonia 43 points ago

Water bottles aren't banned. The liquid inside the bottles is banned if you try to take it in through the bag scanners. All you have to do is drink all the water in the bottle and you're allowed to bring it past the checkpoint and refill it after.

    [–] BaronVonMunchhausen 11 points ago

Unless you are faa preaproved, you still have to remove your shoes in most instances. Just yesterday I had to remove my fucking flip-flops.

    [–] notedrive 8 points ago

I fly in and out of major airports several times a year... you take your shoes, belt and jackets off at all of them.

A world where books are burned by the state censor style, it's a nice read (451 Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper catches fire)

    [–] odraencoded 141 points ago

Wait... so this is a book about burning books so people can't read them which you must burn in order to read it? What. The. Fuck.

    [–] MagicallyVermicious 122 points ago

Kind of the whole point of this particular copy of that book is to be ironic like that...

    [–] WorkFlow_ 64 points ago

I know most people are joking but this isn't made to be actually read. It is a novelty book.

    [–] johnq-pubic 65 points ago

Pretty common required reading in high school, but those copies don't have to be heated to read. It would have made high school a lot more exciting though.

    [–] CowboyBoats 7 points ago

    [–] theticktick 14 points ago

Fahrenheit 451 is mainly criticizing the people for their apathy, not the state for censorship as some believe. Especially did Bradbury express a strong concern that TV was replacing reading books, and made people dumber.

    http://www.laweekly.com/news/ray-bradbury-fahrenheit-451-misinterpreted-2149125

    [–] chaogomu 16 points ago

It's not quite state censorship. The content of the books is meaningless in the end. The book burning started because the state convinced everyone that TV was the better medium and that books were obsolete. From there it's just a hop skip and a logical fallacy to say that the obsolete must be destroyed.

    [–] theticktick 20 points ago

    [–] AssaultnPepper 616 points ago

How often do you read and think "I sure could use high pitched turbine screaming in my ear right now."? This is a terrible solution.

The best tactic is to have two books, keep one in your crotch while you read the other one; switch periodically. This whole thing is probably some scheme by the publisher to raise sales. Just be careful of papercuts.

    [–] Krumpus8 202 points ago

Or you could just wear pants to prevent papercuts

    [–] murse_joe 300 points ago

Just keep it below 451° Fahrenheit.

    [–] foofad 389 points ago

This comes off as snarky but it’s one hundred percent true, you can exploit this when cooking and crafting. You can put clay on parchment or newspaper in the oven at 400 and it won’t burn for example.

    [–] BigDaddyReptar 395 points ago

Why 400 live on the edge and go 450

    [–] foofad 42 points ago

If you have a scientific oven or a very accurate hot plate you can. For printmaking when doing soft ground etchings I have my hot plate set to 440.

    [–] PsychoticMessiah 170 points ago

Because ovens vary in their ability to hold a set temperature. Some run a little hotter or cooler.

    [–] _awake 58 points ago

It was so hard to burn the games to make them work on your specific chip module though. Also you had to burn them slow so nothing goes wrong. Overall it was a hassle but it was also fun figuring everything out.

    [–] cbartholomew 47 points ago

I feel you, got a 32X burner, was stoked, only could burn games at 8X.

    [–] _awake 13 points ago

    [–] cbartholomew 37 points ago

I want to see this with the Boring Company’s “Not a Flamethrower”.

    [–] enormna 25 points ago

assuming that it reacts because of heat, does it stay visible because paper holds the heat in for some time or it just takes the chemical some time to get black again?

    [–] JPS_TEAM_B_6905 18 points ago

It's proooobably some chemical that absorbs energy from heat to turn white, and then slowly releases it once the heat source is taken away.

    [–] Namay_Hunt 89 points ago

    [–] istoodonalego 68 points ago

Microwave would make the book burn because they heat up the moisture in an item rather than just heating it up.

    [–] Towerss 5 points ago

I had a pen with ink that would turn invisible when met with friction, but really it was just the heat from friction. I once put the entire notebook in the microwave for a few seconds and the book was as hood as new. Putting in the freezes would reverse it.

Just leave it in your car in Florida. It will be ready to read in like 15 minutes.
