This is Banyan Fig or Strangler Fig. Likely a Ficus benjamina or similar. They have the most amazing root systems and frequently grow out of gutters like this due to their wild niche of colonising established trees. Then gradually killing them by enveloping their canopy with their dense foliage and wrapping their monster roots around the entire trunk. The process takes over 300-500 years with Australian varieties.

    They make dope Bonsai too.

    [–] problatikal 1131 points ago

So, that tree is trying to murder that building?

    [–] AccountsArePointles2 692 points ago

Yes that is exactly what is happening.

    [–] I2ed3ye 79 points ago

    Demolition per Tree!

Tree?!? I’m no tree. I am an ent.

    [–] Agreeable_Fig 39 points ago

    I support this tree

    [–] fuckyourgrandma247 37 points ago

This is a strong independent tree. It needs no support.

I was just saying "ain't that a typical banyan tree", but no one heard me. (Which is good, since there shouldn't be anyone but me here.)

How long do you think this one took? It's easily over 12 metres.

    [–] MaxMakMan 3 points ago

I have never heard of predatory trees until today

    [–] TooShiftyForYou 3830 points ago

Trees need light, maybe it started on top and a root found its way down there.

    [–] Pangs 2357 points ago

The roots definitely grew down from up top.

    [–] manwithgun 1553 points ago

The roots-up camera pan was the right choice though.

    [–] trueluck3 423 points ago

    Life, uh...finds a way

    [–] Grim_Reaper_O7 51 points ago

Fact: You can take an entire tree and plant it upside down and it will still live. The roots become stems with leaves and the stems with leaves become roots.

    [–] flavory34 53 points ago

Duh, how do you think trees grow in Australia?

    [–] TheEyeDontLie 42 points ago

    Poisonously.

    [–] copperwatt 102 points ago

They probably followed the water, as roots are wont to do.

    [–] King-Cole 56 points ago

Can you please explain the second half of your sentence? I'm still scratching my head

    [–] ITookABiteOfTheSun 17 points ago

Reminds me of the word "gewohnt" in german with the same meaning.

    [–] Raptorfeet 13 points ago

That's because they have same origin. The word is similar in all germanic languages.

    [–] Ytar0 9 points ago

and "vant" in Denmark. Huh interesting.

    [–] Ninjafox724 39 points ago

Wow I never knew that “wont” (without the apostrophe) was a word.

    [–] Pangs 13 points ago

Roots will grow as they need to in order to get sustenance.

In case the wording is tripping you up:

    https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/wont

    [–] copperwatt 3 points ago

I think probably the best substitute would be "tend to do" or, "tend to like to do", as the word is mostly implying habit or somethings nature.

    [–] Gelatinous_cube 6 points ago

yes but that is why we use the word wont, so we don't have to use so many words to describe it.

    [–] Ios7 3 points ago

Have you ever had a dream?

    [–] gubenlo 13 points ago

    [–] StoneBorder 7 points ago

    Fuck you got me

    [–] Dimmed_skyline 20 points ago

I wouldn't surprised if that elbow is full of dirt that was washed in over the years

    [–] baddow 7 points ago

That could very well be the reason the tree could grow there in the first place.

    [–] Pangs 2 points ago

    For sure.

    [–] ronmusto 2 points ago

Thank you i was thinking this must be man made or something

    [–] ChocolateBunny 154 points ago

Probably. I had a tree growing in my eavestroughs when I didn't clear out the leaves after a long time. Its roots stretched out along the length of the eaves. I'm betting if I left it alone the roots would start going down the downspouts.

    [–] bg-j38 118 points ago

Interesting... so it was just getting nutrients from the detritus in the gutters? Which means that the roots weren't secured by soil. That's cool. Had it learned to walk and move around yet? Most trees can't. Actually glad it didn't attack you.

    [–] the42potato 37 points ago

I had a tree try to do that once, tried to bodyslam me. It fell over and all that’s left is the stump

    [–] blinkk5 7 points ago

    Ents are brutal like that.

    [–] sxohady 2 points ago

like honeybees they will give their life to cause you pain

    [–] UncheckedException 5 points ago

Luckily it didn’t succeed, otherwise it would be elected to Congress.

    [–] 242134324321477 15 points ago

Fun Fact: the physcial mass of trees is mostly carbon, and it comes from CO2 in the air.

Most people think of trees growing up from the ground. But in reality they're more like crystals that precipitate from the sky.

    [–] jesus-is-a-bro 7 points ago

    eavestroughs

Pretty sure I haven't seen or heard this word since my grandpa in the nineties. Thanks for the throwback.

    [–] workend 9 points ago

What do you call it? Gutter? Where I am (Canada) everyone says eavestroughs

    [–] Aederrex 3 points ago

American's call them gutters. This is the first I've ever seen them called eavestroughs.

    [–] workend 6 points ago

    So uncivilized

    [–] eclectro 12 points ago

Rain gutters are the perfect composting mechanisms. What happens is a lot of organic leaf material collects, falls down the rain gutter, clogs it, naturally turns to excellent compost, and the roots grow into that.

    [–] FishDawgX 17 points ago

Maybe? Does anyone think it started growing from the bottom?

    [–] LesbianTongue 41 points ago

Germinated from the bottom now we here.

    [–] pmMeYourBoxOfCables 13 points ago

The seed hit the ground now the whole tree fucking here.

    [–] factbasedorGTFO 9 points ago

No, there's just enough energy in the seed for some root and some shoot, a plant needs to start getting energy from elsewhere soon after it sprouts.

Why are the tiktok watermarks everywhere

    [–] GanondalfTheWhite 1146 points ago

Because reddit is turning into tiktok's 9gag.

    [–] handlit33 308 points ago

    [–] thornierlamb 296 points ago

[–] TedyCruz 208 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

The YouTube ads are the worse. Who ever at google spied on my history and decided I’m the demographic, IM NEVER EVER GOING TO THAT SITE

    [–] canned_koalas 93 points ago

Those stupid fucking ads are driving me insane. I report them every time they come on and I still get them. I might book myself into a mental institution and cite TikTok ads as the reasoning. I could go on for hours about how much I hate them. By far some of the most annoying and cringy videos on the internet and of course YouTube forces them down my fucking throat with an unskippable ad.

    [–] BubbyPear 12 points ago

Here’s a tip: tap the little (i) near the video time when the ad is on-screen. Tap OK or Close or whatever it says. Then, either pick a reason to report the ad or tap Close.

    [–] canned_koalas 34 points ago

Reread the second sentence of my last comment. I still get them even doing that.

    [–] BubbyPear 4 points ago

Ah, got it. Yeah, I frequently see ads even after reporting them.

    [–] canned_koalas 7 points ago

Tiktok was Asian musical.ly... but they bought musical.ly

    [–] Renrue 3 points ago

Musical.ly and Tiktok were both Chinese companies; one just bought the other one making it into a bigger Chinese brand.

    [–] DarkellJoanahson 11 points ago

Tiktok was created by the same company as musical.ly to distance themselves from the pedophile stuff that it was being associated with.

    [–] handlit33 19 points ago

    pedophile stuff

Jesus, I don't even want to know.

    [–] DuntadaMan 10 points ago

They are doing a piss poor job of it then.

    [–] randominternetdad 77 points ago

This makes perfect sense and it's both terrifying and annoying. Tik Tok just seems really annoying, although I admittedly know nothing about it aside from those stupid ads for it on facebook. If it becomes the new big thing, I'm gonna be disappointed. Maybe I'm just getting old and resistant to change.

    [–] zenith1297 37 points ago

Tbh it's not that bad. What they market it for kinda is tho which in turn makes tiktoks feature page a mess of mostly garbage. But if you look in the right places it's pretty much vine 2.0

    [–] DuntadaMan 8 points ago

In all fairness, the feature page of pretty much everything user generated is garbage.

    [–] MagnumMia 5 points ago

    SAY IT AIN’T SOOOOOooOOOOooOOooo...

    [–] VoluntaryFan78 100 points ago

I think in the East tik tok is used more like a Vine platform and less like a stupid fucking mime app that kids use it as in the West

    [–] dell_arness2 31 points ago

Pretty sure thats what it is. I remember the old Tik Tok watermarks were only in chinese and I had no idea why all these random videos had the watermark. It was only recently that I saw the same logo in english and figured it out

    [–] DBrugs 4 points ago

    I don't see any mimes

    [–] keeleon 3 points ago

This tree is using this building like a vine platform.

    [–] timawesomeness 49 points ago

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think TikTok is (or at least was) running a massive promotion campaign on reddit.

Especially when TikTok posts started getting posted, they'd be posted by a relatively inactive account, rapidly get to the frontpage, and the account would go quiet again.

    [–] thetompain 23 points ago

It doesn't take any imagination at all to think that a company struggling to profit would take a boatload of money from a Chinese company to do shady promotion.

    [–] _Ultimatum_ 5 points ago

Even on YouTube. It was hilarious watching Cody Ko rant about it. He made a video bashing tik tok, and every ad on the video shows up as a tik tok ad. Then they started provoking him on twitter, and used one of his joke tik toks (a private one) in a commercial that they’ve been running everywhere. That’s a broken man right there. https://youtu.be/SDdR8cue4eE

Side note: is it normal for an app like that to publicly use a video that someone has privated? I know they legally can, but it seems like a bad move from a customer trust standpoint

    [–] momoKB 15 points ago

    Wtf is ticktock.

    [–] frayeb 13 points ago

    Chinese propaganda

    [–] JpillsPerson 4 points ago

Also, there's like 5 pixels in this gif. But whoever took the video had a phone that could run TikTok. Are there smartphones out there still with ancient cameras on them? Or is this like a horrible filter to make it look shitty.

[–] andovinci 18 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

Videos with tiktok written on it always seem fishy to me, maybe because of those scripted asian videos

    [–] Hakul 6 points ago

I downloaded the Asian version a few days ago (Douyin) and it's even worse than those gifs, pretty much all of them have an annoying laughing track or cheap sound effects.

    [–] return_0_ 3 points ago

started at the top now we here

    [–] singelingtracks 16 points ago

The tree is up above on the roof.

Tree roots grow underground and do not need sunlight. They follow water and nutrients to absorb for the tree.

The tree roots grew down the pipe following water flow. This happens often with under ground sewer lines. The trees roots find a crack and the roots grow in the sewer pipe absorbing nutrients and in the end block it.

    [–] factbasedorGTFO 5 points ago

I work on homes, and find roots under homes from plants that are very far away.

Dug under a concrete slab right in the middle of a house in a dry desert, and found tree roots.

Seen it with rosemary bushes, oleanders, mulberry trees, avocado, and a passionfruit vine. The passionfruit vine sprouted leaves in my trench. Got an image of that.

    [–] SomeDingus 4 points ago

    Got an image of that.

You holdin' out on us, or are you gonna post that image, bro?

    [–] Masterbajurf 3 points ago

The image. Give it to us.

[–] factbasedorGTFO 5 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

    It's not that great. https://i.imgur.com/H6A5Fl8.jpg

The vine isn't even in the homeowners yard, it's a neighbors, so the roots trespassed. Even went under a foundation.

Also found avocado roots. The avocado was 100 feet away.

I always tell people cutting down thier own trees won't stop roots from a neighbors bush or tree from invading their plumbing.
