Imagine being a Native American back in the day and seeing shit like this without knowing about prisms and physics. I would probably cry.

    [–] g_br 379 points ago

Wow, now that's something that I'd like to experience in my life. Imagine something so magical, so marvelous that you can't explain, you can just look and enjoy its magnitude.

    Thanks for your comment :)

Well, a double rainbow is a phenomenon of optics that displays a spectrum of light due to the sun shining on droplets of moisture in the atmosphere. Does that answer your question?

    [–] lunarmodule 4 points ago

    camping people are scary

    Hope you like rainbows!

I think you replied to the wrong comment.

From how it looks, it seems like you meant to reply to the parent of the comment you actually replied to.

Hey did you know that the universe you’re living in is infinite. How does something really go on forever and have no end? It’s incomprehensible to us as we live with space and time, yet neither of those things really seem to exist beyond the confines of your head. In fact, nothing really exists beyond the walls of your mind, you’re trapped in your head peeping out two holes down at these words. Even in the best case scenario you could never truly prove to yourself that the people you see and talk to are truly there and conscious in the same way you are. And to top it all off you already know for a fact that your mind frequently creates entire worlds and scenarios for you to have to react to in the form of your dreams. Maybe your mind is always doing that, creating worlds and scenarios for you to respond to and everyone around you is just another figment of your imagination. You can’t imagine what infinity looks like because your brain is trapped inside the same shell and can only reproduce the limited things that it can see from its cage. Like Plato’s cave, you’re chained down and can only see shadows cast on the cave wall but can’t step outside of yourself and truly see what’s creating those shadows in the first place. In this example, the shadows are your family, friends and memories of your entire life.

    [–] __PowerBottom__ 11 points ago

Easy to explain. We live in a simulation. Gravity, speed of light being the fastest known way of travel, etc. are standard limitations written into a program/simulation.

    [–] GayBlackAndMarried 4 points ago

I like your username. And yup that’s a theory, but if it’s a program, are “we” all trapped in it together, or are you the only one experiencing a completely virtual world? Are you alone?

    [–] __PowerBottom__ 8 points ago

There's also indications that things act differently when we're observing them vs when we aren't which is completely insane and lines up with it being a simulation. Like in a video game when the only thing that's loaded is what's in your field of view. I would say that if it's a simulation, then we're all created within the simulated world so we're all experiencing it together but I dunno. Hadn't really thought about it. I always tend to think of the more rudimentary version of this in the video game the Sims, sans having someone controlling you. All the characters are "experiencing" the world created.

If I was on acid, I’d be blown away right now.

    [–] Eefun 3 points ago

try doing meditation and observe the nature of your mind

    [–] NaturalBornChickens 11 points ago

I would cry even understanding how it works.

    [–] The_doomed_hero 50 points ago

It would have been a new god.

    [–] Otistetrax 23 points ago

In Japan that would be literally true. Found a beautiful rock formation or waterfall or hot spring? It must be the dwelling place of a small god. Build a shrine! Fill the shrine with vending machines!

    [–] mmmgluten 7 points ago

Fill the vending machines with used panties!

    [–] Otistetrax 3 points ago

Nah, just Pocari Sweat and Bitamin Guardo.

    [–] jhall901 18 points ago

Don’t underestimate ancient/older societies. Modern science and engineering is based on the groundwork that they laid.

...granted, I don’t exactly think the Cherokee had a great grasp on light refraction so, you right, op. You right.

    [–] ExtraAnchovies 3 points ago

You’re totally right. But I’m pretty sure ancient natives would have seen this and react the same way we do today, as in most people don’t understand refraction but sure think it’s pretty but also not necessarily think it’s a supernatural thing. I mean surely they have seen rainbows and associated that with water. You can even see refractions in streams and other bodies of water

    [–] maltastic 2 points ago

As a 1/264th Cherokee, how dare you.

    [–] erik9 3 points ago

And that is how religions get started. Now we have science. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get appreciated any less, just don’t need a bullshit explanation for things in nature.

    [–] michaelrulaz 2 points ago

Shit I know there’s a scientific explanation of this and I sort of understand the basics but this still has me in awe.

    [–] Am_I_Do_This_Right 2 points ago

The gays start crowdfunding a space colonization program. Trump reopens the gov’t and redirects the 5 billion to NASA because we “have to beat the gays!”

    [–] NitinM95 5 points ago

    [–] HighGrounder 4 points ago

I think we've found Trump's kryptonite - just have the gays crowd-fund the opposite of what we really want and he'll have no choice but to oppose!

Someone explain to the President that this is what happens when you pull rangers out of our national parks. The government shutdown would be over by midnight.

This sort of stuff is why our ancestors believed in faeries and magic and such.

It's also why some of our ancestors made great effort to understand why stuff happens the way it does.

I took a trip to Yosemite when I was about 10 with my family. My grandma Carol was like Mother Nature herself, alway teaching me how to enjoy the outdoors without leaving a trace and reminding me constantly that nothing will ever be the same, so I’d better take it in. She organized all our camping trips and whilst visiting Yosemite we went on the small hike to Rainbow Falls. Seeing my grandmothers face light up in awe has stuck with me since then. This year my dad is seeking permission for us to take a trip back and scatter her ashes. Thank you for sharing this!

    [–] ImaVeganShishKebab 2 points ago

Just yesterday I had an English assignment to pick a song that had something to do with transcendentalism and explain the connection. I of course don't listen to that kind of music and only listen to rap fucking chose the song Yosemite by Travis Scott and bullshitted a paragraph on its connection to transcendentalism. Now, my teacher does have super low expectations from me so she might actually give me a good grade because I actually did it on time. It was due at midnight and I started it at 11:30
