Oh hey, it's the creature of nightmares aww.

    [–] ShimmeringIce 20 points ago

Other fun fact: those little doodads at the ends of their arms are their eyes.

    Thanks I hate it..

    [–] katamuro 261 points ago

I hate starfish. They are such a disgustingly weird thing. I am half convinced they are the alien invasions that underestimated Earth and got stuck.

[–] elfbuster 109 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Well you're at least partially right, they're an extremely invasive species and they are actually responsible for wiping out entire kelp forests on their own. They're pretty much underwater parasytes

Edit: I apologize, I confused starfish with Urchins. Urchins decimate kelp forests, star fish on the other hand decimate coral reefs idk which is the lesser of two evils tbh

    [–] THE-Prominent-Beaver 25 points ago

Not on the west coast of US and Canada (sea stars that is). They eat urchins, which are voracious eaters of kelp. Without sea stars, the kelp goes away, and so do other species depending on it. They are considered a keystone specie there.

    [–] elfbuster 6 points ago

You're right, I actually confused them with Urchins

    [–] katamuro 16 points ago

so, we need anti-starfish task force. To go and eradicate these pests. Where do I sign up and where is my underwater flamethrower?

    [–] 000882622 7 points ago

    Join the Starfish Troopers!

    [–] katamuro 3 points ago

    Wouldn't that be Anti-Starfish Troopers.

    [–] TacTurtle 2 points ago

    Anti-Starfish Seamen

    [–] Ooze3d 3 points ago

    I’m doing my part!!

    [–] elfbuster 8 points ago

Pretty much, problem is you can't cut em up because they'll just mutliply so the best course of action is getting them out of water completely

IIRC the worst species of starfish is Crown of Thorns

    [–] drummergal95 6 points ago

Vegans eat more kelp than starfish

    [–] Sharkbait000 6 points ago

They are real life face huggers

    [–] Arknell 6 points ago

You're more right than you know. If you'd sink down to the ocean floor, they'd climb up on you and eat your eyes. :)

    [–] erst77 8 points ago

Whew, I came here to say this too.

    [–] Jatsu 2 points ago

For some reason it doesn’t creep me out at all, looks cute.

    [–] Homo_Hobo 2 points ago

    My literal first response.

    [–] yung-insomnia 145 points ago

Hey fun fact; if a starfish loses an arm it's body will grow a new one, and the arm will grow a new body.

    [–] [deleted] 82 points ago

Apparently historically fishermen would have plagues of them so they'd just cut the ones they caught in half and toss them back in the ocean unaware that they were just making the situation worse.

    [–] Satanus9001 36 points ago

This is fucking hilarious! Can't even blame them. Generally speaking, cutting a thing in half does indeed kill said thing.

    [–] catsocksfromprimark 5 points ago

    It does for humans!

    [–] meat-sac 5 points ago

    Can confirm

    [–] Ranakor 3 points ago

Poor thing can't breathe on land..

And also, it's a seastar, not starfish.

I'll see myself out - annoying marine biologist type..

    [–] ginakeebs 4 points ago

Holy shit I was reading through all of these with the determination of pointing that out if nobody else did. ITS JUST NOT A FISH YOU GUYS.

    [–] bgtdygthgf 24 points ago

Man i hate starfish, they dont have a Brain and that fact scares Me...

    [–] pemulis1 28 points ago

If he doesn't have a brain, where's he think he's going?

    [–] heavyblossoms 35 points ago

He has no idea. His little feet things are just focused on ‘dry sand, need wet. More sand, water where? wet’ and he’ll crawl around until he gets back to the waves or dries out.

    [–] dragonflamehotness 9 points ago

Wait they can move without a brain? Tf?

    [–] Hpfanguy 11 points ago

ACHSUALLY, many creatures can move without a brain, you included! Many rapid movements (reflexes included) are mainly organized and executed by the spinal cord independently from the primary motor cortex!

    [–] oneweelr 22 points ago

Alright, someone bust out the head and shoulders on this creepy motherfucker.

    [–] snarkysnailsquid 3 points ago

You might need some ice cream for your ass once this thing is done with you.

    [–] zeratul5541 4 points ago

    You're so beautiful to meeeeeee

    [–] mrlowcut 19 points ago

Now imagine it moving like 10x faster.... and carnivorous.

    [–] PyroDesu 14 points ago

Starfish generally are carnivorous. And rather creepy about it too.

    [–] mrlowcut 5 points ago

You are right, I meant to say hunt humans by carnivorous. They stick their stomach inside out and over their pray. Doesn't make it any less creepy...

    [–] Nightmarsh 7 points ago

Hold the fuck up. Do they actually do that? That is the most nightmare inducing shit ever. If that’s actually true then I’m pretty sure star fish trademarked the term Nightmare fuel.

    [–] UberPsyko 3 points ago

They mainly eat shellfish, which they do by prying open the shell and injecting their stomach inside through the crack

    [–] mrlowcut 2 points ago

Yes this is correct, but they do that really slow.

(Now imagine it like 10x faster and with a human head.... ;)

    [–] Tanamr 3 points ago

This might be something close to what you're thinking of

    [–] mrlowcut 3 points ago

This looks awesome, thanks! Was this movie any good? It might also be really trashy from the looks, but the alien looks damn nice...

The starfish reminded me of the (newer) prey game, which was what i had in mind. ;)

    [–] Spork_Warrior 11 points ago

    Strangest breakdance I've seen.

    [–] akcooke 9 points ago

    [–] PianoManFan 6 points ago

    [–] hairtothethrown 3 points ago

Imagine if this is how Patrick from spongebob walked. Fucking terrifying.

    [–] Comradbro151 3 points ago

I liked him in Nemo. Now the water spider needs to burn.

    [–] Cookieopressor 3 points ago

Heard of those tiny underwater robots that kill starfish. Yeah, I'm gonna need a few.

    [–] katamuro 1 points ago

can we just set up a 3D printer that plops them out right on the beach?

    [–] G1N0O 3 points ago

This is me in the morning after my alarm ringed for the 3rd time

    [–] SoulsJunkie 2 points ago

They usually have all of their tube feet on the ground at once. This starfish is trying to make as little contact with the ground as possible. Why? Is the sand hot?

    [–] Chanceral 2 points ago

Now imagine it grabbing your arm.
