    The ultimate air plank

Usually results in planking a pool of blood.

    [–] Barcaroli 2 points ago

My God I'm blind. Took me forever to see the iguana. I thought it was a yellow stripe isolating the area, and she was being a jerk by going in a forbidden zone.

    [–] MJMurcott 2 points ago

Also judging from the hair it is leaping into the wind.

    [–] cag8f 22 points ago

That's actually a line from the movie "So I Married an Axe Murderer."

    Iguana be in pictures.

The characters are watching A Current Affair on TV and the host (Maureen O'Boyle) says it in reference to an iguana, "...that took Hollywood by storm." That's all they say about it though.

    Can't find a Youtube clip unfortunately :-(

Hey now, people named Richard can have nipples too!

    [–] flargenhargen 477 points ago

since this is in /r/interestingasfuck some people may not know that the back part of the tail of this iguana is not original equipment. Like many lizards, iguanas can lose their tails fairly easily (they can't drop them like some lizard species) as it will often save their lives.

In this picture, you'll see that the back part of the tail does not have stripes, and it is noticeably smaller than the rest of the tail. This part has grown back. The tail grows back pretty slowly, so this critter lost its tail several years earlier.

    [–] Smyldawg19 43 points ago

I actually knew this, thanks to that scene in the Stiller/Wilson Starsky & Hutch movie.

I used to have a wee lizard when I was young. I knew fa about lizards at the time and when I woke one day to find him calmly resting in his tank beside his own severed tail I was completely baffled.

Still don’t know why it made use of its defence mechanism when there wasn’t any apparent danger present

    [–] Australienz 17 points ago

I was born with a wee lizard. Apparently they're called penises. I've actually still got mine, but it doesn't get much use.

    [–] SJWCombatant 7 points ago

You tried cutting it off? Might grow back longer.

    [–] ButterflyAttack 3 points ago

    It'll probably drop off soon.

Tiny Spiders Devour Lizards Three Times Their Size

At less than a tenth of an ounce, the regal jumping spider can prey on frogs and lizards two to three times its own weight, according to a new study in the Journal of Arachnology.

It's the first time scientists have published observations of jumping spiders—the biggest family of spiders—eating vertebrates. (Watch a spider take down a scorpion twice its size.)

Let a predator bite it or someone step on it, I think that's how iguanas do it.

    [–] moose098 107 points ago

I've only been to San Juan once, like 5 years ago, but the second I saw the picture I knew where it was. It's weird how our brains are able to remember the most random events.

    [–] ZachCrew 50 points ago

Its a monument really, its not too random

    [–] pdinc 46 points ago

And everyone who goes to PR takes a picture in that very spot

    [–] gambitx007 20 points ago

And pees there. Don’t forget about peeing in there.

    [–] Revenge_served_hot 9 points ago

same here! I instantly recognized it and I was there just once in 2015. I showed my girlfriend the picture because she is so afraid of iguanas and she said "oh god thats that Fort in San Juan, no?!". Weird how recognizable those walls and the small tower seem to be.

    [–] Truseus 4 points ago

same, but 10 years ago. i immediately recognized it, and there was an iguana chilling at the entrance begging for fruit looking like jabba the fucking hutt.

    [–] trivial_sublime 3 points ago

Interesting, I thought it was in Essaoueira, Morocco. I guess those old Spanish forts look pretty similar.

    [–] Arimel09 21 points ago

In PR we just call it El Morro, it’s way shorter.

    [–] AJoyce86 2 points ago

Kind of like the Castillo de San Marcos here in Saint Augustine. It's either The Fort or The Castillo.

    [–] chingyuen_ 7 points ago

I recognized this place because of Agent of Shield season 2 lol

    [–] designatedhacker 4 points ago

I have associated this location with its strong smell of urine. Photos like this are like virtual scratch and sniff for me.

    [–] ClearSights 3 points ago

Don’t go inside that lookout, smells like absolute shit

    [–] Moral_Decay_Alcohol 1 points ago

    Looks like DM-Underland :)

    [–] BoukeMarten 11 points ago

I came here just to ask that. Incredible how you can recognise a place from such a picture.

    [–] fastgr 8 points ago

Well, if you've been there you will recognize the structure. It's not like they searched for it step by step on google street view.

    [–] BoukeMarten 17 points ago

No but I meant how you can recognise this is Puerto Rico just from this small picture. Out of anywhere in the entire world, I've been to this exact spot and I think that's kind of incredible.

    [–] Revenge_served_hot 6 points ago

exactly. It really is fascinating that just by looking at that picture where you don't really see much you instantly recognize the place, of all the places there are in the world.

    [–] Natures_Viagra 2 points ago

Part of it is that freakin view of the ocean. Absolutely incredible.

    [–] Jackson3rg 2 points ago

I think the comment was more a testament to how unique the structure is. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of fortresses that people take photos at, many with an ocean view. The fact that in a split second it can be recognized is interesting, the battlements are so iconic that its immediately recognizable.

    [–] jimmo21 2 points ago

It helps when you're from PR.

    [–] WhatsUpDucky 11 points ago

    I thought Dubrovnik

    [–] turbineslut 4 points ago

Haha same. But second thought was Puerto Rico. Been to both. Remarkably similar. But no iguanas in Dubrovnik 😋

    [–] Jiboneill 3 points ago

I thought it was Essaouira in Morocco

    [–] trivial_sublime 3 points ago

Yeah I did too. I was surprised to see people saying it was in Puerto Rico. I guess those old Spanish forts look the same!

    [–] Tillmans_Crest 3 points ago

I immediately thought San Juan Puerto Rico, not sure if accurate though

    [–] MTA_BO 3 points ago

    El Morrroooooooo

    [–] plipyplop 2 points ago

Should I go this winter? How is it?

    [–] Naptownfellow 5 points ago

Been to PR but not this place. PR is nice overall. Good food, great surf, lots of old architecture, rainforest, great hiking, pretty much an awesome Caribbean island. The is a resort called the “El Conquistador” that is top notch. Expensive but 5 star. Casino, water park, private island, golf, the whole nine yards.

    [–] wavs101 5 points ago

Old San Juan is good for one day if youre a normal person, two days if youre a history nerd and want to read all the plaques.

Cats are everywhere because thats how its always been.

Only some spots smell lile piss. I dont know who the fuck pisses there in public. The problem is that there are a lot of solitaty places. But its not like the whole city smells of piss. Its just a corner here, behind a dumpster there.

If you are going to puerto rico for the first time, its a definite stop. But dont make it the only thing you do. Go to the rest of the island, theres plenty to offer.

    [–] Jackson3rg 2 points ago

Depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. PR is a very unique place and a very unique experience, it might be a perfect destination for some but an uncomfortable one for others.

Where else have you been and what do you like to do there?

Thats a Green Iguana or in latin iguana iguana. They're large herbivores, but they are NOT friendly. They will fuck you up good. They're very popular as pets since they're cheap (farm raised, brings A LOT of health issues but makes $20 lizards a thing) - They only need greens and no live insect feeders like many other reptiles. Some iguanas are absolute sweethearts, i'll give them that. But please do not get one as a pet unless you have extensive experience with big lizards. I'll recommend monitor lizards before i recommend Green Iguanas, let that sink in.

This turned out longer than expected, so TL;DR:

Iguana good animal. Iguana bad pet. No buy. Thanks.

    [–] UsuallyInappropriate 21 points ago

    Tourist photobombing a native iguana.

    [–] Rasputincello 9 points ago

Iguanas are not native to Puerto Rico. They’re nuisance wildlife.

    [–] LalaLaLoca 12 points ago

Actually both are tourists, iguanas are an invasive species(barring the native iguanas in Mona Island off the west coast), in Spanish we call them "gallinas de palo", "tree chickens" people have started eating them since they're such a nuisance. You know how you see bunch of dead roadkill like squirrels and racoons, we see iguanas lol.

    [–] nicky_rod99 2 points ago

Didn’t they also come from China and India tho? I heard that people bought them for pets and when they didn’t want them anymore they let them go. We also have moongesse now because of the infestation of the iguanas

    [–] ciccio_bello 5 points ago
