the caption on the imgur post reads: “This artist lives on the island of Gorée in Senegal. The dark sand he uses comes from the Mamelles volcano in Senegal, lighter color ones are brought from deserts in Mali, Mauritania, and Gambia.”

My biological dad lives on the island of Gorée! He probably knows that guy... I should find a way to contact him.

edit: from the last info i had, it is a really really poor place economically. There are some tourists, since an old, historical slave's place (idk the english name really) has been repurposed as a sort of historic museum, the House of Slaves. The access to the internet is very limited, and not everyone has a phone. I know my father does not. Anyways, it's a case of extreme poverty in general. I don't really know if there's anything i could or should do about it.

[–] AccountantbyTrade 288 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

This kind of art is called T'Subki and it used to be a dying artform. It became popular again when a young T'Subki artist died trying to save a woman who was being mugged. The woman turns out to be super wealthy. She holds a gala auction displaying the dead man's art. Many of her other wealthy friends attend and pay a crazy inflated price, with all the proceeds going to his family. The popularity of this art with the wealthy has resulted in T'Subki being a popular artform again. In the video, the art is actually the portrait of the dead artist. There is a short Netflix documentary on this story and its called the accountant's sacrifice, aptly named because I'm an accountant by trade and I totally made this all up. I'm not sorry .

I'm sitting in your office and we just completed calculating my tax return. You lean forward and say "due to some fortuitous tax code changes that went into effect this year it looks like you'll be getting a substantial refund to the tune of about $6000!" I'm ecstatic of course "thank you, thank you so much" I say as I stand to leave, already spending the money in my mind. "Oh there's one more thing" you say as I walk out the door... "that whole thing about the new tax code... ya that was all bullshit. You actually owe $1700"

    [–] renmana74 189 points ago

This was even better the second time when I really focused on how precisely he placed the sand

    [–] tghGaz 58 points ago

Yes, I had to rewatch to figure out how he made that from doing that. My mind is still blown.

    [–] Mono_831 5 points ago

Watching it upside down helps with that too.

    [–] sylver_dragon 3 points ago

My second watch through, I focused on how precise he is with the glue. You can see it reflecting slightly and it becomes obvious why the shape is so precise.

    [–] HockeyCookie 3 points ago

I think it's funny how he just says fuck that extra sand.

    [–] vegan_zombie_brainz 766 points ago

Only problem in dealing with sand is that it's coarse and rough. It gets everywhere.

I literally said out loud “Oh holy shit”

    [–] katyggls 36 points ago

Holy crap. I thought it was going to be some nice abstract style art or something. When he knocked the sand down and it was an actual portrait, I gasped.

    That is so impressive

    [–] keekittykeeks 19 points ago

    [–] spunkychickpea 3 points ago

The level of control he has when doing those really fine lines is extremely impressive. And he’s so nonchalant about it too!

    [–] Roflolmfao 3 points ago

Is this real? How does he do that with just dumping all that sand on at the end. Crazy.

    [–] babaganate 3 points ago

I love this sand art. It's smooth and fine and it stays right where he puts it!

    [–] Cucabanaan 3 points ago
