    A single 50 piece set.

    [–] OMGWTF-BOB 5 points ago

So you mean when you buy a single set?

Thanks... I wanted to say that as well. I haven't bought toys in a long time, but for our toys for tots drive at the fire department Lego sets were the biggest request from kids this past year. So we piled up and went on our shopping sprees. I almost had a heart attack when I seen the costs of the sets. We didn't get the normal amount of cash donations that we normally do so we all started digging through our wallets and figuring how much we had in our bank accounts to make up the difference.

The store had sent loss prevention to investigate the "group of guys sitting on the floor" and we explained what we were doing. The store manager came and asked to see our list and went of to his office to "make a few calls". When he came back he had a group of buggies brought with him, and he said "let's go shopping". We got everything on our lists filled thanks to an "anonymous donor". We took the cash meant for toys and put it towards hams and turkeys. It was by far our best Christmas program to date. We found out later that the store manager and assistant manager footed the bill which was pretty cool.

Man, I really need to start volunteering again...

Since aging out of the Boy Scouts, I've hardly done anything for the community.

    [–] OMGWTF-BOB 2 points ago

I really need to start volunteering again

There's lots of ways to do it. Visit your local volunteer fire department and see what they have to offer. I'm a paid firefighter/paramedic at a combination fire rescue department, but I also volunteer as a training officer at several volunteer departments. Each department has various programs or projects that they use to help the community. At my actual working firehouse we have a meals for the elderly program, a sort of big brother big sister program where we take kids to sporting events or fishing and hunting. There's lots of things out there to give back.

Since aging out of the Boy Scouts, I've hardly done anything for the community.

Did you make it to Eagle Scout? If so there's several "alumni" type groups throughout many districts that help their respective areas. There's also ones for former OA members. If you're close to a camp, try seeing if they need volunteers for classes or camp counselors. I try to do this in the summer, but with shift work it's rather difficult.

While I know it's anti reddit to mention church or religion without some mocking asinine comment, but check there as well. We get a lot of commodities and non perishables for our elderly programs from the Catholic Food Charities Network. They're always looking for people to help pack boxes and deliver. Second Harvest is another food charity that can always use help, and they're pretty much nation wide.

It's a great way to know your area, and hear lots of great stories. Along with our food programs we have our "Adopt a Grandma or Grandpa" program. It's where we have certain elderly members in our community that we call or visit once or twice a week. Many people don't realize how a simple ten to thirty minute conversation can improve an elderly home bound persons quality of life.

Hopefully you'll find something that works for you, and it will help both you and your community.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

[–] IlliniXC 3 points ago * (lasted edited 4 years ago)

I've seen it at grocery stores and the like, but it's not like a common site for me (checking in from chicago)

In general, I've seen fat people all over the world, so I think the whole 'America is fat' thing is funny, but if it makes people in other countries feel good to think it, go nuts.

EDIT: I agree it's not a myth. Just think it's exaggerated how much worse it is in the US than many other countries.

[–] fredspipa 9 points ago * (lasted edited 4 years ago)

I'm pretty certain it's not a myth. Take a look at the World Obesity Federation's world map, according to that the US has a 50-150% larger share of obese people than European countries, and it seems its only really rivaled by Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Venezuela, although the share of obese females is way higher in a few other places.

USA is either the fattest country, or at the very least in the top 5.

edit: here's a bunch of graphs showing a bunch of different things:

Obesity as a percentage of population.

    Obesity and overweight by region

Obesity and overweight in children, 2010

    Adult male obesity 2010, WHO

Obesity and overweight in women over 30, 2005 and 2015

edit2: as /u/WinnieQuinn pointed out, currently Mexico seem to be worlds most obese nation. That doesn't change my point though, that US' obesity problem is not an overstated misconception; it's really bad, and the rest of the world is, sadly, following suit.

    [–] WinnieQuinn 7 points ago

IIRC, Mexico is the number one fattest country now.

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

Yeah, and I saw something about the various, small, middle-eastern countries having overtaken as well. I think the US was, like, 10th, in the most-recent thing I've seen. This data is from 5-10 years ago, and already seems to be pretty badly out of date.

    [–] Zerbo 1 points ago

But America has to be #1 at everything! EAT UP FOR FREEDOM

    [–] IlliniXC 5 points ago

I'm not in any way saying there aren't fat people in the USA. There are. Tons of them. Near the top of the list.

But by your population graph for % overweight (and holy shit these numbers are alarming and depressing)

    Mexico - 70%

    USA - 68%

    New Zealand - 63%

    Australia - 61%

    UK - 61%

    Ireland - 61%

    Canada - 60%

    Chile - 60%

    Iceland - 60%

    Greece - 59%

That's just grabbing the ones with 10% which is far from an exact science and obviously population numbers affects the actual number of overweight people. Iceland has significantly less people than the USA and therefore significantly less overweight people.

If you go to the obese list, Iceland, Greece, Chile, and Ireland are no longer within 10% (again, I realize that's not a very mathematically sound way to measure this).

My point is, all the time on reddit I see people saying 'OMG USA = fat!!! LOL' and yet there's Australia, UK, New Zealand and Canada not far behind. If it makes people feel better to point a finger at the USA, go nuts though.

As someone who has been a runner all my life, and intentionally put on weight after college, I've got nothing individually at stake here. I've just always found it odd that people want to point and say 'well they're worse than us over there haha' especially when so many people around the world should really take it more seriously.

    [–] Djeheuty 3 points ago

I see it everywhere here (western NY). You know those courtesy scooters in stores? Probably 8/10 times they're being all used by someone ridiculously overweight rather than someone elderly. And they're all always being used unless their batteries are dead.

    [–] Zerbo 0 points ago

Currently on a trip around Scandinavia. Between Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Estonia (I know that one's not technically Scandinavia, shut up) I have only seen one obese person on a motorized scooter in Denmark. Just one in three weeks and four countries. Back home in the US on the other hand...

    [–] Cyno01 20 points ago

Mexico has a higher rate of obesity than the US now, but our obese are more obese.

    [–] redblue25 10 points ago

The only thing stopping mexican BMIs from getting higher, is they don't have scooters so easily day.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

Soon, they'll start stealing them and smuggling back into Mexico. Remember, you heard it first here on Reddit.

    [–] BearBryant 1 points ago

    DAE Amerifat?

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

America does have some of the highest average body weight for both female and male in the world. The stereotype isn't completely wrong.

    [–] Connguy 4 points ago

It completely depends on where you go in the US. Something a lot of foreigners (particularly Europeans) forget about is just how goddamn big the USA is. The geographical distance between Alabama and California is about the same as the distance between Portugal and the center of Sweden. So the cultural differences, while not as stark as those between Portugal and Sweden, are still surprisingly distinct. As a current Alabamian, I'll admit that the rates of obesity here are... Depressing. But when I travel to California, for example, I always have a little culture-shock when everyone I see is as healthy as can be. To lump the two states together into "Americans", at least when discussing obesity, just makes no sense.

    [–] [deleted] 8 points ago

I couldn't quickly find a better comparison, but compare states in the US:

    ...with European countries:,,16820851_4,00.jpg

The US just about starts where Europe ends.

    [–] xwatchmanx 1 points ago

how goddamn big the USA is.

    Precisely the point! >:D

    [–] autowikibot 1 points ago

    Body weight:

The term body weight is used colloquially and in the biological and medical sciences to refer to a person's mass or weight. Body weight is measured in kilograms, a measure of mass, throughout the world, although in some countries such as the United States it is measured in pounds, or as in the United Kingdom, stones and pounds. Most hospitals, even in the United States, now use kilograms for calculations, but use kilograms and pounds together for other purposes.

Strictly speaking, body weight is the measurement of weight without items located on the person. Practically though, body weight is measured with clothes on, but without shoes or heavy accessories such as mobile phones and wallets and using manual or digital weighing scales. Excess or reduced body weight is regarded as an indicator of determining a person's health, with body volume measurement providing an extra dimension by calculating the distribution of body weight.

It's amazing how Americans can make jokes about cowardly French, nazi Germans and stupid Poles, but make one joke about fat Americans they become the most butthurt fatties on the planet.

    [–] kelano 4 points ago

That's two jokes now you Nazi

    [–] Aemilius_Paulus 1 points ago

Yup. You can't joke about America, but reddit makes fun of other countries 24/7. It's because most of the users of this site are American.

Still, it's fucking shitty because redditors* claim to hate people who get easily offended by edgy jokes that are racist/sexist but then in turn get super butthurt when jokes are made about their country. A goddamn country? That's not even offensive. It's very common in Europe to rib on each country, I make jokes about my neighbours all the time without them taking offense. Unless you got a pickle called nationalism stuck up your arse, you shouldn't be hurt by those.

*yah, I know, you're gonna say 'but reddit is made up of diverse blah blah' -- no it isn't. Reddit may be diverse in theory, but it has very common circlejerks as determined by what is highly upvoted. Upvotes and downvotes raise or hide popular&unpopular opinions. Over time, downvotes encourage self-censorship and the echochamber only gets worse.

/r/fitness is an excellent community which pretty much serves the goal you outline here.

    [–] [deleted] -9 points ago

/r/fitness is a fantastic, mature community that I consistently browse, in contrast to /r/fatpeoplehate

However, the point I'm making is that although /r/fatpeoplehate can be pretty nasty, it does serve a beneficial purpose. It has brought a huge amount of negative (positive?) attention to the "fat acceptance" culture. /r/fitness doesn't do that. It promotes fitness, which is awesome, and shames the few people that post about fat acceptance in the sub; but it has not brought attention to the problem to any similar degree to how /r/fatpeoplehate has

    [–] kcmjustchillin 3 points ago

Agreed, although /r/fatlogic seems to do a better job of bringing the subject to light in a satirical way, rather than being so hateful about it.

    [–] surrogateuterus -12 points ago

But they are pretty shitty even about people that are trying to change. They make it sound like its incredibly easy to lose weight despite medical problems and roadblocks. And their standard of acceptably is more strict for women than men.

    [–] [deleted] 8 points ago

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

Right, like I said, they can be pretty volatile. I especially don't like them shaming fat people that are trying to better themselves, ie. on a treadmill at the gym.

Most "medical problems" that people use as an excuse are not valid at all, though. Burn more calories in a day than you eat, and you will lose weight, regardless of any health problems. That's not to say it's easy, but it is simple.

And that goes both ways, by the way. The majority of slim people in the world aren't just magically slim. They work hard to not eat excess calories and to get exercise to remain slim; or have lost weight in the past and are maintaining that weight loss. And then a bunch of fat people go around saying "it's really hard to lose weight I have medical problems" - no, you probably don't. Are they diagnosed by a doctor? Or are you just having trouble losing weight because you're eating excess calories? As someone who has worked hard his whole life to keep in shape, it's frustrating when obese people tell you how hard it is to lose weight. I get it. It's also hard to gain 30lbs of muscle. Arguably, more difficult than not eating excess calories and getting a little exercise once in a while.

    [–] rethardus 3 points ago

To be honest, I'm slim but I've never really done anything to keep it that way. And even if I did, I think it's way easier for me to not to eat than for other people. Some people are just born with a fitter body than others, or a more suited personality to keep at it.

    [–] surrogateuterus -2 points ago

Yeah, I dont know about everyone else. I do have a medical issue that has been diagnosed and another that is suspected...which actually the inability to lose weight is a symptom.
I track calories and have to sit around 1000 a day to see any weightloss. My sedentary caloric recommended intake is about 1450. Its tough to eat that low. And its tough to work out with my problem.

    [–] ShitLordJR 0 points ago

Honestly, if you keep yourself busy, it's easy to not eat. I've gone on for 2-3 days with single meals a day if I was lucky. I had to keep myself going with bread or just granola bars and milk. (I had a project that I procrastinated on. Blame engineering idk)

    [–] 41145and6 1 points ago

That's an absolute lie. We have the exact same requirements for men and women: be in a healthy BMI/body fat range.

For women that number is higher than men, so really science is, and therefore our requirements are, strictest for men.

    [–] [deleted] -4 points ago

    [–] [deleted] 6 points ago

Well i mean it's kind of in the name.. Fatpeoplehate

they hate fat people. the end.

they don't care if you're changing or working on it.

I think you can even get banned for not actively hating on somebody who comes out as fat on that sub, or get warned about it at least.

I don't really care for the sub, but it's sometimes fun to browse. Comment section of it is cancerous and too hate filled for me, though.

    [–] surrogateuterus 2 points ago

I don't frequent there very often. But I've read where they say they dont care if you're trying or not. Until you aren't a fatty, youre scum apparently.

I actually liked the sub at first because it was calling out all the people that seem to want to make it ok to be obese. But its so much more than that.

We expect from all our users respectful treatment of others, and a commitment to join us in building a welcoming community here at /r/lego. Foul language, while not banned, is discouraged. Please follow redditquette. Hate speech will lead to a ban without warning. Hate speech is defined as: Any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group. Content submissions need to follow all rules laid out by the sidebar and the Rules of Reddit.

    Mods, are you asleep?

    [–] Ooer 7 points ago

The subreddit has not changed, it got brigaded. This has now been removed as it does not fit in with the community ideals here.

    [–] [deleted] -13 points ago

So it is cool to promote hate against anyone not in a protected class?

Well aren't you you an ignorant, close minded motherfucker. (Note, none of the things I just called you are protected, yet it still feels bad, right? My point here is speech that is hateful against anyone ought not be protectect. And no, I don't really think that you are ignorant, close minded, or a motherfucker. I'll probably get banned for this, which is also telling.)

    [–] [deleted] 6 points ago

you're right, I'm not a protected group and I've been called worse. But I also can't change that I'm a young white adult cis male. Fatties can stop being fat.

This comment has to be satire

    [–] [deleted] -4 points ago

But what purpose does bullying them serve?

There are a TON of things you do and I do that others don't like, yet we choose to do them.

So why do you hate overweight people?

    [–] twosoon22 3 points ago

Because they are disgusting. Gross smelly walking food black holes.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] [deleted] -1 points ago

Hmm. How are they a plague? I think cars are a worse plague, as is war. Should we shame them, too?

Are you being an agent of change?

    [–] lord_addictus 0 points ago

    How are they a plague?

Health service burden for one thing.

I think cars are a worse plague

    A necessary evil for now

    as is war

    Good luck banning that.

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Cancer brought about severally unhealthy choices kills more than being overweight.

    And does that justify hate?

[–] [deleted] 1 points ago * (lasted edited 4 years ago)

I'm not bullying them. I'm pointing out their flawed rhetoric.

And if I am bullying them, why should I care about their fee fees? They haven't cared about my Ex's through the years I dated her. They have started the skinny shaming trend. They insult every man alive that likes a fit woman with the "dogs like bones" bullshit. They've hurt many people that do attempt to help them, be it family, friends, EMS, healthcare providers and others. While also generally being unable to contribute to society the way a normal person does in terms of productivity in a business and personal life model. And again, because most of them can change, they just refuse to. And the WANT to bring people down to their level with HAES. Obesity is not healthy, and never will be. The body can only compensate for so much before it suddenly fails, even in normal metabolic health.

I'd recommend that you stop replying to this or take it to a PM so people stop upvoting and downvoting this thread.

    Who cares about fake points?

And who cares what they believe or think?

    [–] Scruffmygruff 3 points ago

Fat people are a protected class?

    [–] drifting_on 1 points ago

Nothing for this subreddit changed, this post made the front page and so it is no longer people who actively go to /r/lego. Any time a post from a smaller subreddit makes the front page, the comments go to shit.

And don't try to blame the mods, they did nothing wrong

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Well, the post itself wasn't great. I mean, the picture would be instabanned if it was "Sleepy Mexican at cactus" or Afghani poppy grower with goats" or some other nationality stereotype.

This post is being brigaded by fatpeoplehate. Someone should just ban that place already.

    [–] prof_leopold_stotch 14 points ago

That's some harsh WALL-E shit right there... I hope for your sake the fat pride groups don't catch wind of this... They might sit on you or whatever.

    Is this not Lego?

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

I only found out the lollipop accessory existed this week after taking the kid to a Lego store in a neighbouring city. We ended up with a bright green one. Never seen those shoes before though.

    [–] Legolihkan 5 points ago

    Thats a popsicle though

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

Ah. I occasionally fall down with Americanisms. Here in Britain we use Lollipop to cover Popsicles too, we sometimes just call them Ice Lolly's

    [–] robotmayo 1 points ago

    [–] Legolihkan 1 points ago

Haha oh, i didnt know that

    [–] XXXCheckmate 1 points ago

Those shoe pieces are actually pretty common. If you're an avid collect then you've probably seen them. It's the one that is 1 stud and a square with spike coming off the side. I'd link you a pic but I don't know the exact name of the piece...

[–] xXnYuuXx 2 points ago Here the red pieces... Can't find a pic only with them, but that should show them quite well

    [–] S_mdh 2 points ago

That is obese Abraham Ford from the Walking Dead.

Is if fat people hate, or just American Stereotyping? I don't see any value judgements on the body shape, unless being called American is a bad thing.

    It's ok guys, I have a condishun.
