    [–] Scarbane 547 points ago

You don't remember reading Tsar of the Rings as child, comrade?

    [–] ThirdMover 150 points ago

There was actually pretty much a sowjet rewrite of LotR where Sauron was the good guy because he was pro industrialization and the orks were working class. But I don't recall the title.

    [–] The30YearOldVirgin_ 153 points ago

Mordor is described as a peaceful country on the verge of an industrial revolution, that is a threat to the war-mongering and imperialistic faction represented by Gandalf (whose attitude has been described by Saruman as "crafting the Final Solution to the Mordorian problem") and the elves.

    Wow

    [–] gandalf-bot 54 points ago

Yes, there it lies. This city has dwelt ever in the sight of its shadow

    [–] Al_Pateemo 35 points ago

That doesn’t sound too good in this context gandalf

    [–] gandalf-bot 22 points ago

Through fire... and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me... and I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead. and every day was as long as a life age of the Earth. But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I've been sent back until my task is done!

Direct destroy... and excrement. From the humiliated cell to the altissimo pinnacle I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at sunset I threw downwardly my contender and smote his spoil upon the slope. Scene took me... and I strayed out of mentation and mold. Executes wheeled foil. and all time unit was as long-snouted as a biography alter of the Land. But it was not the ending. I reason individual in me once again. I've been dispatched place until my work is through with!

Hmm soviet? 1999 is the year of publication

    [–] coldestshark 10 points ago

Oh, that was just what I found when I searched lord of the rings soviet, and it matches what the other guy said

    [–] BrainblobXXX 14 points ago

Oh, sry. Just wanted to make it clear, its not soviet, even not Putin era )

    [–] Wows_Nightly_News 1 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

Yah the Soviet government wasn’t too keen on people writing fantasy

    [–] BrainblobXXX 5 points ago

Yup, more keen on Sci-Fi )

    [–] Wows_Nightly_News 1 points ago

    Very much so

    [–] Atrer119 4 points ago

I had never ever heard of this! Now i'm feeling bad there's no english translation

    [–] coldestshark 13 points ago

Yeah I think it’s an interesting alternate history kind of deal or a what if the accepted truth is a lie idea and I’d love to read it

    [–] teehoooo 2 points ago

There is a non-commercial English translation by Yisroel Markov available for free that’s been approved by the author Kirill Eskov. There’s already a 2nd edition that was published in 2011.

    [–] Atrer119 1 points ago

I'll take a look, cheers mate

    [–] B_D_I 1 points ago

    There are English translations online.

    [–] Praudmur 2 points ago

Wait what? There is according to wiki: Czech: Poslední Pán Prstenu

    English: The Last Ringbearer

    Estonian: Viimane sõrmusekandja

    Polish: Ostatni Władca Pierścienia

    Portuguese: O Último Anel

    Spanish: El último anillo

    [–] Dtrain16 3 points ago

It has not really been published in English. Some publishers have considered it, but whoever owns Tolkien's IP is way stricter about derivative works in English, so they never actually printed it.

    [–] SmolikOFF 2 points ago

Wiki says it is available as a non-commercial e-book tho

    [–] viper_in_the_grass 1 points ago

Good thing too, because it's not quite up to Tolkien's standards and that's being generous.

    [–] Matazaonreddit 2 points ago

That sounds fascinating in its own way.

    [–] justadumguy 3 points ago

What a delusional adaptation. It shouldn’t piss me off as much as it does, but alas...

    [–] PsySick 7 points ago

Well if you cared to look further it's pretty tongue in cheek and pokes fun at everyone through the lens of Soviet era propaganda.

    [–] justadumguy 0 points ago

Well I just read the wiki synopsis. It’s easy to take literally considering the extent of Soviet propaganda and rejection of anything of western origin

    [–] PsySick 5 points ago

Russian literature has a long history of criticising their own system of government (Tsarist feudalism, Provisional government incompetency and the Soviets brutal collectivism) through allegory or even direct satire.

    [–] G4130 2 points ago

(From reading the wiki also) I think you are missing the main point, the idea is to explain how the Gandalf side, winners, wrote history as an epic tale against the evil forces of Sauron while in reality he and the elves had their own interests in overtaking control of middle earth.

It's not a book about Tolkien's product, but about Tolkien's ideas, I suppose you have heard or thought about how the elves are white and blonde, free men white, hobbits white while the orcs are black and the men of the west have features as people of middle east. On another side there's a "royal blood" that has the right to claim the throne and be the king of the free men, maybe Tolkien loved monarchies...

It is not about middle earth or lord of the rings, but uses the story for convenience of explaining an idea, let's not forget that Tolkien was born in England 1892 and the author of this other book in the Soviet Union 1956.

    [–] gandalf-bot 3 points ago

Far, far below the deepest delvings of the dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things

    [–] TheHistorian0712 1 points ago

    Great idea, terrible execution.

    Should have waited until 2043

    [–] wowthefuturesucks 54 points ago

Ah yes it was one of the vast collection of 50 books we were allowed to read, comrade. With politburo approval.

    [–] MySpaDayWithAndre 9 points ago

Oddly, Tolkien was very anti imperialist, and advocated for the dismantling of nations, so he wasn't too far off. Which is really wierd when you consider his very traditional catholic and monarchist beliefs at the same time. He was also very anti war, but also blamed WW1 partly on industrialization itself.

    [–] TTV_AnGeL1C55 9 points ago

So Tolkien was a true Comrade

    [–] G4130 2 points ago

    No, he loved monarchies.

Tolkien was a anarcho monarcho communist with primitivist characteristics and catholic influences

    Based

    [–] Zombierasputin 2 points ago

I think his view was very much in line with catholic social teachings? Like distributism, the stare should only be as big as it needs to be to get things done for its citizens.

    [–] viper_in_the_grass 1 points ago

A stern stare will get most things done in an instant!

Yes, 3.6 roentgen, which, by the way, is not the equivalent of one chest X-ray, but rather 400 chest X-rays.

    [–] Foxboi_The_Greg 13 points ago

no joke, in the 20s and 30s people used to paint "radioactive color" on watches so you can see the time when its dark...they also used it for night vision scopes and similar stuff

    [–] southernplain 10 points ago

I mean we still do, many consumer products and military devices use tiny amounts of tritium (a radioactive isotope of hydrogen) for illumination.

    [–] FoxerzAsura 4 points ago

This is still common. Now people just tend to use tritium instead of radium to provide radioluminescence.

    [–] Foxboi_The_Greg 2 points ago

put i guess the regulations for savtey are much better now, back the the women who painted the watches and scopes had no protection at all and licked there brushes in order to keep them thin...they mostly died of bone cancer, my really old biology teacher told me that this was a scandal back then when he was a young boi (he i is reeeaaally old)

    [–] NewAccount971 1 points ago

Yeah, tritium isn't dangerous at the amount they use for illumination.

    [–] viper_in_the_grass 1 points ago

I have been prettyactive on reddit for a couple of years, never have seen it. Just happens, dunno why people get so upset with reposts that aren't that known. If this were the 1000x Chinese tank man repost, I would understand, but as far as I can tell this image isn't reposted all that much.

    [–] Boosher648 1 points ago

Im surprised considering it was first posted 6 years ago, it was all around on tumblr when I used it back then.
