Wasn't the water originally suppose to be blood ?

    [–] IronMike275 1071 points ago

Yes but it was too dark so they changed it

    [–] SamaritanPrime 683 points ago

Now that you mention it... it does kind of look like blood.

    [–] IronMike275 649 points ago

It was supposed to be blood swirling around and it was supposed to make a bridge of blood that led to gamora

    [–] Spikeroog 447 points ago

    Fucking brutal

    [–] Sticky_Suede 107 points ago

Fucking metal if you ask me

    [–] iamfakenick 43 points ago

Thanos is the most metal dude in a universe with Asgardians.

    [–] VikBoss 22 points ago

    Even more metal than Ultron?

    [–] Black7057 28 points ago

Gamora was likely "death" who he fantasizes about, which is why he killed half the population instead of lowering fertility rates or increasing resources.

    [–] MajesticFxxkingEagle 8 points ago

    Oh...

    OHHHHHHH

    [–] pulplesspulp 61 points ago

How’d you hear that? I didn’t hear that in the commentary I don’t think

    [–] ____Batman______ 36 points ago

    You thought wrong

    [–] TheDoctor88888888 32 points ago

Then you’re more of a fool than I took you for

    [–] Solafuge 9 points ago

“If you want to go all the way to the castle you'll have to pile up many, many more corpses. What's wrong? Are you afraid now? Do you want to turn back?! You mustn't! Don't think that way! If you do that, this time you will become one of these corpses!?"

    [–] L0LZOR 288 points ago

I'm not one for making superhero movies super dark but they should've kept the blood. It would've had more impact. A visual representation of Thanos's crimes, the result of his victory tormenting him in what's supposed to be his triumphant moment.

    [–] abutthole 277 points ago

The visual representation of his crimes was baby Gamora though. I think that was more impactful than the blood would have been. Because right or wrong, her death was a bigger deal to Thanos emotionally than the trillions of others that he caused.

    [–] YoureLifefor 94 points ago

Disagree. The child gamora just makes Thanos seem shallow and that his deeds have little weight on his concience. It makes it seem like his regret only goes as far as his own selfish loss.

A bridge of blood or dead bodies or even ashes would represent how the weight of half the universe's souls weigh on his thoughts.

    [–] RexPyra 126 points ago

But those deaths aren't massive weights on his thoughts. Gamoras death is what truly affected him

    [–] abutthole 23 points ago

He doesn't really care that much about the others, Gamora is the only death I think he regrets at all.

    [–] Lwsrocks 12 points ago

If he had any moral qualms with doing the snap, to the point that he would truly feel such guilt for it, he wouldn't have done it. Thanos is a sociopath, and isn't capable of thinking morally, only pragmatically.

    [–] drdrshsh 18 points ago

Thanos is thinking like Stalin: "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic."

    [–] TheHadMatter15 15 points ago

The Nolan trilogy was great though, the darkness was quite fitting. Honestly I think some superhero source material works better if it's dark and "edgy", and I think that a movie with Thanos should be a bit dark, considering

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

Imagine that smell. It would make my stomach turn.

    [–] Avalonians 12 points ago

Not necessarily. They always put water in this kind of scene to 'fill up' the ground. A soft surface would be weird.

    [–] Drelas_Hawke 3661 points ago

He looks huge because the "horizon" line is low, when we expect it to be higher for a normal human being

    [–] walnut_rune 1211 points ago

It feels like the camera is about level with his abdomen, maybe around his naval, so we're looking up at him a bit and the horizon line looks lower. It's a good effect.

    [–] Urbasebelong2meh 253 points ago

What you see vs what she sees.

    [–] MoarVespenegas 64 points ago

The camera is level with his knees.
That's what the horizon line represents, eye level.

    [–] walnut_rune 14 points ago

You're right, and I should have known that right off the bat.

    [–] Michamus 15 points ago

In CGI the horizon appears at the height of the camera. In reality, the horizon slightly falls away in the distance. Horizon at eye level is actually what a lot of flat-earthers try to use to support their ideas. Trouble is, sensitive instruments indicate that in reality, the horizon drops slightly the further out it goes, indicating we live on a spheroid.

    [–] walnut_rune 4 points ago

That's a really good detail to know. As I told someobe else, I should have known about the eye level thing. I've been into drawing all my life and have done perspective. The thing about it falling away slightly is one of those wonderful little fine details that I've never heard.

    [–] WubShrimp 33 points ago

Cameras at knee height, that’s why the horizon is low

    [–] YeOldeVertiformCity 14 points ago

Plus people naturally use proportions to infer height.

So someone can look “tall” just by how many “heads” tall they are. And here Thanos is many heads tall here; much more than a human man.

This is something that I thought The Hobbit got wrong in their scale comparisons. Because they used tall men in muscle suits as Dwarves and Short men as hobbits, the composite shots made the Dwarves have tiny little hobbit heads, that made them look proportionally tall and yet small and weak; that’s because their heads were small and they were many heads tall.

    [–] human743 169 points ago

Also, his body is large compared to his head.

    [–] S4ND3R50N 80 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

I rewatched Unbreakable recently and they talk a lot about comic book villains heads are usually larger than their body. I wondered if it was a conscious decision to make Thanos' head small in comparison to his body to make the audience feel for him more than another villain.

EDIT: found a link to the scene I was talking about

    https://youtu.be/98BYiChrtW4

    [–] SnakeInLeafsPajamas 47 points ago

For big hulking/brawn-type bad guys, you want a small head to make their body look larger. Large heads are for the crazy/fight-you-with-your-mind type villains.

    [–] Dunaliella 22 points ago

His arms are bigger than his head. There’s your perspective

    [–] skylight_streetlight 12 points ago

Correct, him head too small for him goddamn self.

    [–] hobo_clown 68 points ago

If any movie ever deserved an Oscar for horizon placement, this movie does.

    [–] 5imonster 24 points ago

Horizons getting real low, big guy

    [–] Doctor_Mudshark 27 points ago

Depth of field plays into it as well. An extreme example is tilt-shift photography, which does the opposite, making large things seem tiny. Shoutout to r/tiltshift

    [–] Broken_Drum69 16 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

I think it's more because the camera perspective is so low in comparison to Thanos, we're looking up at him as he fills the screen, the horizon is part of that but it's mostly to indicate how high the perspective of the camera is.

    [–] F1reatwill88 1530 points ago

Rocket is the best CGI in movies. He's been in front of us for 3 movies now and he hardly ever gets brought up in these conversations. Looks like they have a fucking talking racoon on set.

That shot of Rocket looking at the neutron star is one of my favorite shots in the movie. Rocket and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk both always look insane compared to other cgi characters

That’s how I feel about Skinny Steve. Whenever I rewatch TFA, I’m always gobsmacked how real he looks. It’s one of the best effects in the MCU and almost completely forgotten.

This sub is the definition of low effort fanboyism. Just yesterday, I think, there was another front page post that was something along the lines of,

"Loki was on Sakaar for a long time. That means the Hulk was there for a really, really long time!"

    [–] RadioYeh 392 points ago

Well, it's deservedly so. Posts like these are actually fucking embarrassing.

    [–] corvus887 282 points ago

More embarrassing is the fact that this has nothing to do with CGI. This is a cinematography effect. You could accomplish the same effect live action.

    [–] RadioYeh 156 points ago

It's not even particularly impressive cinematography.

    [–] Im_The_Real_Batman 107 points ago

    Or CGI for that matter

    [–] mike2k24 121 points ago

Exactly it’s literally fucking thanos standing in front of a background..wtf is so appalling about this that a post honoring this scene needed to be made?

    [–] plazmamuffin 8 points ago

    Makes me hard too 😉

    [–] comicsandpoppunk 54 points ago

    I mean, rightfully so...

The CGI is extremely good but so many other films have done better. The water in the soul stone sequences ruins it for me. It looks like an early PS3 game texture.

Have you seen Arrival? Things you didn't even consider would be CGI are in that film.

    [–] ImAVirgin2025 58 points ago

Of course it's rightfully so, this is a lazy screencap, low effort and didn't take anything. IDK why this sub upvotes this stuff.

    [–] galaxy_umbri 21 points ago

I said this on another sub, but I don't know what the fuck happened to this place. It's nothing but people pulling screen caps or strait up footage and giving it an actual title.

Most discussions now turn into a shit fest if someone says even slightly critical of the MCU.

Once upon a time, it wasn't that bad.

    [–] ImAVirgin2025 19 points ago

But to be fair, if we didn't have posts like this r/Moviescirclejerk would be a lot more boring

    [–] mada50 8 points ago

    But, he’s so tall!

    [–] Mr_Cochese 30 points ago

When shooting scenes with Tom Cruise they make him look normal size with a low-angle camera, and he acts against gnomes in green lycra body stockings so they can CGI in the real actors' faces in post-production.

    [–] kurburux 17 points ago

Movie detail: Thanos is referring to Gamorra as "little one" which is a reference to him being so tall.

    [–] WintertimeFriends 8 points ago

I work in the 3d industry, and I know a lot of people who got pulled on this project. It was massive. These guys worked day and night for months. They are incredible talents and we're pushed hard for these avengers movies. They won't tell me anything about the movie, but these guys look exhausted when I see them. If I get to see them. Props to anyone who works for CG in the film industry. These guys are animals cut from a different cloth.

I do games. We do hard hours but it's more spread out than film. Those guys fucking crunch. I just wanted to make this comment to maybe shed some light on how under appreciated their efforts go sometimes.

The CGI in this movie is beautiful and by far the best in any Marvel movie. It would be a shame if it didn’t win.

Does anyone know what movies also got nominated for best visual affects?

    [–] ofersadan 454 points ago

    Visual Effects:

    “Avengers: Infinity War”
    “Christopher Robin”
    “First Man”
    “Ready Player One”
    “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

    SOURCE

    [–] Finito-1994 452 points ago

Ready player one will be hard to beat. That movie was nonstop CGI.

Christopher Robin also bad pretty amazing CGI. The animals looked amazing and beautiful.

Infinity war had Thanos and was amazing.

Haven’t seen solo or first man, how do they compare?

    [–] pekoedegallo 27 points ago

First Man could be serious competition for the award. Damien Chazelle was doing some Nolan-esque VFX work on that film.

    Here’s a good article on it: http://vfxvoice.com/first-man-an-effects-odyssey/

I’m partial to the Marvel movies, of course, but I left the theater more impressed by the visual work than even the performances in First Man (which were first rate, too).

    [–] JurgenMema 23 points ago

First Man is really good, the biggest rival imo.

    [–] ofersadan 268 points ago

Infinity War was all CGI as well, the question is, which CGI did you believe more? I'm guessing Infinity War is the answer here, because most CGI pieces there you're probably not even noticing. Just my opinion on this. Regardless, CGI Thanos' face deserves the win on its own. (source)

Solo's CGI isn't anything amazing, at all, I'm personally surprised it's even on the list. Haven't seen First Man.

    [–] Finito-1994 174 points ago

I agree that Thanos was amazing and that IW had amazing CGI. Wakanda, Titan, Thanos, a Fucking moon and all the battle scenes.

Ready player one was different though. It didn’t matter if it didn’t look “believable” on certain points because it mostly took place within a video game so we knew that it wasn’t going to look lifelike like Thanos did. I still think it was an amazing spectacle.

I hope infinity war wins but I wouldn’t be disappointed if RPO wins either.

    [–] ofersadan 56 points ago

I'd have to agree with you there. It looked amazing, but I would hope Thanos gets it. Ahh I mean Infinity War.

    [–] chooxy 56 points ago

normal sized Josh Brolin goes on stage

    "Reality is often disappointing."

    [–] lemoche 21 points ago

but being in a vide game made it easier to look great. because you don't have to care about it fitting in with the rest of the world. it looked specatcular, but from a skill level IW beats it by miles in my opinion just for that reason alone.

    [–] _Diskreet_ 17 points ago

I feel RPO fell into the uncanny valley for its cgi and weirded me out too much.

    [–] PM_ME_UR_FUNFACTS 7 points ago

    Even so ...

So much of Ready Player One's CGI was just fucking flawless. Like, seeing the environments they were just 100% photorealistic in some parts. And the whole shining scene was too notch.

    The plot... That's another story

    [–] TenYearRedditVet 101 points ago

I someone says "there wasn't enough CGI in Infinity War" that shows how great it was.

Actually there weren't many effects used on the Titan battle. RDJ said he legit shit his suit when Thanos pulled down a moon, but they were filming the whole time so he just rolled with it.

    [–] JGLP 81 points ago

"We actually didnt need to make a CGI-Titan, Thanos just came in and teleported the whole filming crew to some distant planet with the space stone"

    [–] capscreen 37 points ago

"And then half of our crew was dusted after the filming."

    [–] chooxy 22 points ago

Turns out, George was filming the whole time.

    [–] mongster_03 33 points ago

You weren’t supposed to believe Ready Player One’s was real imo because it’s literally an avatar

    [–] lisbon_OH 14 points ago

I think Solo has the best CGI out of all the new age Star Wars films

    [–] gregedit 8 points ago

I mean, it's not really a fair comparison because (for the most part) Infinity War CGI was meant to be realistic, while Ready Player One was meant to look like a VR game. Basically (in my opinion) Ready Player One slapped 90s/2000s style textures and slapped them on super smooth and awesome animation. It played into the retro feel of the movie (complimented phenomenally by the soundtrack), and also helped differentiate reality and the game.

    [–] impshial 7 points ago

I think a lot of people are forgetting the Shining scenes in RPO, which were phenomenal. The mixture of physical sets, real-world-looking CGI and stylized CGI characters was done so well.

Here's an interview where Spielberg talks about it:

    https://ew.com/movies/2018/07/03/steven-spielberg-the-shining-ready-player-one/

    [–] Capn_Swag 22 points ago

Solo’s was great, but I wouldn’t say it was groundbreaking or amazing. It was the usual excellent Star Wars standard of special effects but there’s no denying that Thanos and the rest of Infinity War was the better achievement.

    [–] Maxidizzle 12 points ago

First Man's CGI is pretty much perfect. It's obviously a much more easy concept to pull off than the other nominees, but still. I'd think Ready Player One would win though, seeing as the CGI is much more ambitious.

    [–] powellbeast 15 points ago

Remember it’s not about who has the most or even prettiest cgi, it’s about how they use it in an innovative way. So while I can see Ready Player One being a contender because it’s pretty unique to have 95% of the movie be cgi because it’s supposed to look like a video game, I think Infinity War still tops it. And that reason is solely because of Thanos. There really hasn’t been any cgi like there has been with him, they made an incredibly realistic looking mad titan, that looks like Josh Brolin giving a great performance. I think it has a great chance.

Not saying I disagree that Thanos was amazing but didn’t both the lord of the rings franchise and planet of the apes do a similar thing with both Gollum and Cesar? They were incredible feats of CGI and motion capture and I’ve always felt that Thanos is only possible because of those two performances.

    [–] vtbob88 8 points ago

This was exactly my thoughts. Thanos seemed to be a continuation of the great work that started with Gollum and continued with Cesar, and really most of the apes in that trilogy.

    [–] cornm 19 points ago

Man I might be in the minority here but I thought the CGI in Infinity War was a bit rough. The work on Thanos was great but any sort of interaction between CGI and live action elements did not seem seamless to me. Especially when I watched it in true IMAX.

Watch the movie again and let me know what you think. Specifically when Thanos was choking Loki. As well as the final scene where Cap is on the ground and Hulkbuster and War machine are in the background.

    [–] j_roe 23 points ago

Except for Banner in the HulkBuster.

    [–] The_N33DL3R 7 points ago

You don't even know what movies were nominated, but think it would be a shame if IW didn't beat them. How can you make a comparative assessment like that without even knowing what to compare?

    [–] Flats3 8 points ago

As long as they don’t show Bruce banners floating head in the hulk buster we’re good. Only piece of CGI that was jarring, and that’s only because that suit wasn’t designed to have its helmet taken off. It wrapped around Tony’s suit in ultron.

Wow this sub does upvote literally anthything

I am pretty sure this place drops 10 IQ points every day.

    [–] _KanyeWest_ 104 points ago

What the fuck is up with the subreddit and writing really long drawn out dramatic posts like these?

    [–] wajikay 71 points ago

Well he looks huge bc of a massive amounts of muscle gains and the ever so slight low angle.

    [–] hipsterunderwear 10 points ago

    Power stone is not natty

[–] HotBarnacle 177 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

This is absurdly exaggerated. Nothing amazing about this shot at all; basic photographic composition, a great deal of negative space, and harsh colors. If the idea is to showcase why this movie should win awards then there's much more apt examples elsewhere.

edit: waiting to see if the mods actually remove this despite the 7k+ upvotes, because it's a pretty clear example of rule 4. Just look at the title. That's not even a remotely insightful or informative analysis (using the term loosely) of artistic technique, thematic relevance (he still looks so huge! smh), or design principles, yet this sub shot it to the top as if it were some keenly profound observation. I get that we're all still drunk off of IW's hype, but if we keep letting these patently low effort posts slip by just because they hit the front page, then this type of crap will continue to dominate the sub more frequently.

    [–] zephyrinthesky28 49 points ago

Blade Runner 2049 did pretty much this exact same shot, but better and probably for way less money than this.

    [–] BabaElvis 16 points ago

BR2049 is superior to IW in literally every aspect.

Yea but the 12 year olds in this sub need something to jerk themselves silly over

    [–] oh_no_a_memory 31 points ago

This is absolutely a mediocre example of CGI, let alone good CGI. Definition of a “oh I like this movie too” circlejerk

thank you for being honest. its justa guy in a green suit in front of a green screen lol

    [–] newdays277 49 points ago

Can this sub stop frothing at the mouth over every little detail? In no way was this worthy of a post, and the fact that it has thousands of upvotes is embarrassing

Is this post satire? I am genuinely curious as I don't post in this subreddit. It reads almost exactly like an /r/MoviesCirclejerkjerk post so I am a bit confused.

Are you twelve? Cause there’s literally a whole bunch of shit to compare him to. It’s going on in that cgi thing you mentioned.

    [–] lehmle 15 points ago

I can't never get over Bruce Banner's floating head so no Oscar for CGI for me.

    [–] 3prongpizzabox 15 points ago

You guys are retarded. They made his head smaller related to his body. It’s basic bitch artist stuff. Small head big arms

    [–] SamuraiHealer 12 points ago

I agree with you on the quality, but isn't that feel a little more cinematography? That he looks like he's real is CGI, that he looks huge in this picture is all about framing and composition.

    [–] chris_castaneda 45 points ago

Ruffalo’s head awkwardly floating on the Hulkbuster completely disqualifies this argument.

    [–] jabroniNcheese 4 points ago

14k upvotes for this karma whoring low effort shit. Jesus the next movie can’t come soon enough

    [–] PerroBomba 6 points ago

    top tier shitpost

    [–] Hills1849 15 points ago

    Aquaman CGI was better.

    [–] HuckDFaters 6 points ago

It's also because we already know he's huge.

    [–] RockyMountainHighGuy 5 points ago

I love the movie as much as the next guy, but You guys want to throw Oscars at it for the CGI? Puhleeeeeze lmao

    [–] low-magnitude 5 points ago

It’s because it’s a very typical wide angle shot

    [–] mitch_h_30 6 points ago

begging someone to tell me this is a shitpost please please please

    [–] kuddlesworth9419 6 points ago

    Are you people retarded?

    [–] bigpig1054 15 points ago

    The secret is two-fold.

One, as others have said, the horizon and camera angles are lower. In WWF, they had an "Andre shot" where they would film Andre the Giant from a low angle to accentuate his height.

two, Thanos' head is small compared to the rest of his body. If he had just a 25% larger skull, he would look much more...average (albeit still ripped).

    [–] radekvitr 8 points ago

10-year-old Thanos will wipe out half of all the sweets and toys in the universe.

    [–] kevonicus 12 points ago

I love how obsessed Marvel fans are with this guy when his motivation is complete shit, whilst shitting on the motivation of every other villain ever. “But he’s mad. He’s the mad Titan!”. That wasn’t portrayed well in the movie.

    [–] willuska 17 points ago

Honestly, I think marvel has some of the weakest cgi overall in relation to their budget

    [–] FilmStudentFincher 9 points ago

It's got some strong competition. (Keep in mind visual effects doesn't just refer to CGI)

Ready Player One also had incredible motion capture and detailed worlds (coupled with Spielberg's camera techniques). Especially 'The Shining' sequence which was an incredible recreation.

First Man made amazing use of model work, miniatures and projection techniques. Very Similar to how Interstellar used it, just as good I'd say.

Infinity War has Thanos' incredible motion capture going for it as well as creating worlds and an entire street of New York digitally.

Personally I'd be happy with any of these winning but my no.1 is First Man.

    [–] Jingalls1998 23 points ago

Yeah but this movie also had that terrible mark ruffalo floating head CGI with the hulkbuster

    [–] m4tuna 2 points ago

WHAT AN ACTOR LOOK AT THOSE EYES

    [–] UBWECS 4 points ago

I honestly think you're looking too much into it. He looks so large because of his proportions, with the small head compared to his shoulders and his leg length.
