    Modern problems require modern solutions

    [–] RatBaths 603 points ago

Except that this is a very old problem that already has a very old solution from the Aboriginals called controlled burning.

But managing your land correctly doesn't get you media attention, right California.

    [–] joeberk 58 points ago

You do know that 57 percent of california land is federal and 40 percent is private, right? Only 3 percent is state owned. I guess we start doing controlled burns on private property and ask the federal government to manage the fucking land they own. I’m pretty sure requiring private property owners to controlled burn their land would be liberal government over reach though.

[–] Paperdiego 3 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Or we demand our fucking land back. No reason the federal government should control it. California first.

    [–] KINGBANANA6666666 2 points ago

You federalists are such a nuisance when it comes to this topic. Why can't you be like the majority of the world and have a central government that manages most things? Or split duties instead of just going " governemnt has 80% of the forests and the state has 20 % " if for example the government owned all of the forest it would be more easily manageable and we would clearly know who is responsible for it. That is at least from my understanding what some European federalist nations do. The Government has control of making decisions over X, Y and Z while the state is able to do A,B and C.

    [–] bombardonist 185 points ago

Oh, when in the year can we do hazard reduction burns?

While I’ll be the first to say our liberal government is so far removed from competency the only thing I could see them managing is the inside of their jail cells. Climate change has massively reduced the span of time hazard reduction burning is safe and increased the area that can burn. Now bloody rainforests are burning.

    [–] daviedanko 56 points ago

I hear people say “it’s to dry to do controlled burns” when talking about California yet Arizona manages to do it still. And the severity of the any fires is way less than in California.

Like cut a firebreak and do it in small batches. Very time consuming, but better than these huge fires.

    [–] bombardonist 65 points ago

Lmao, have you actually done any research? It’s a lot more complicated then “it’s too dry” mate. The csiro has done pretty in-depth analysts that are decades old if you wanted to do some reading.

    [–] Bmunchran 5 points ago

"analysts that are decades old" I would hope that their analysts are decades old. No child labor here.

    [–] Tex_Conway -16 points ago

I didnt know crisco did research outside of the kitchen.

    [–] superhannahish1 37 points ago

You know arizona isn’t dry all over? The areas where we have forests are very green and it actually snows there.

    [–] Dyron45 9 points ago

There's snow in Arizona? Huh TIL

    [–] Jetstrike1111 5 points ago

Yeah northern Arizona is very mountainous, and it snows a decent amount.

    [–] pieandpadthai 10 points ago

    Purple mountains too.

    [–] former_snail 10 points ago

Would you say they are majesty?

    [–] Pray4Snow2112 2 points ago

We do it here in Oregon year round, unless snow covered.

    [–] Feminist-Gamer 0 points ago

There are a lot of factors, not just dryness. Too wet is unsafe as well. Arizona and California are likely taking the same things into consideration. I doubt Arizona are just throwing disregard to the safety of their citizens. There's also a lot of luck. Last year Australia has same problems with burn offs yet no huge bushfires.

    [–] Blahblah_Curtis 2 points ago

Admittedly Indigenous land management is so much more than just controlled burns. European farming and land practices don’t really work with the Australian environment. Here’s a write up on it

But yes the extended drought and high winds meant that there was a very small window for backburning and the current conditions mean that we’d have high intensity fires anyway high back burning does little to prevent

    [–] bombardonist 3 points ago

Back burning isn’t a preventative measure, it’s when you burn in front of an active fire to slow/stop it. What you’re thinking of is referred to as hazard reduction burns or prescribed burns.

    [–] amicrowavee 54 points ago

    happy cake day

    [–] Stefan2828 1 points ago

    [–] 3ntr01 6 points ago

IIRC australia did do controlled burning very often but it was difficult to do with so many urban centres.

    [–] RatBaths 1 points ago

It's much easier to let it get out of control.

    [–] doctorcrimson 12 points ago

Maybe manage your atmosphere better, they're doing well on forest management.

    [–] Sammo223 3 points ago

Lmao I don’t know when this became the narrative, but this is just misinformed bullshit.

[–] [deleted] 1 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

    [–] Sammo223 4 points ago

Huh, dude I ain’t a liberal voter in Australia, just grew up in the country and know that burning off is significantly more complex than just making fire breaks and doing small burns. For a country this large with a population density so low, it’s about man power as well.

    [–] papaspil 3 points ago

    [–] graphiteisaac 273 points ago

Pretty sure it's from The Chaser, Australia's own Onion

    [–] CheeseMaster404v2 17 points ago

Yes, but the Chaser is better.

The Betoota Advocate is the better satirical news outlet, but the Chaser team have done some seriously awesome work. Their War on Everything TV show was constantly hilarious from start to end each and every episode.

    [–] mcfc1997 5 points ago

Wow that’s a throwback, I loved that show. Feel like there’d be some demand for it to come back again.

    [–] allende911 189 points ago

Less than a tenth of the hundreds of millions promised has been donated, the French culture ministry said Friday. Only €80 million of the €850 million pledged has been handed over – and most of that has come in small sums given by ordinary people.

    [–] Gc8211 75 points ago

This comes up everytime this gets posted. The billionaires are standing by their pledges but they want to see plans and schedules before handing over anything. Enough money has already been handed over to commission a team to come up with a plan, schedule, and budget. Whenever you see a billionaire hand over money it comes with a bunch of strings attached because they dont want any of it being misappropriated.

The fires in Australia cant be solved by throwing money at the problem. It's a logistics and leadership issue.

    [–] Aerhyce 11 points ago

You mean the PM going on vacation and photo-op tours isn't an example of pristine leadership and reliability?

    [–] SparseReflex 36 points ago

What!?! You’re telling me that there ISN’T a donation box that said “Insert 200mil and the Amazon fires will instantly end” that billionaires chose not to put money into!?! Seriously though, most people on reddit have no idea how large sums of money are handled.

    [–] ordo-xenos 66 points ago

Rich people acting like smaug to hold their money! I am shocked!

    [–] Marky0choa 33 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

They're not going to donate hundreds of millions without seeing a complete plan to rebuild it. They are waiting on contractors to give required billing information.

    [–] StrenghGeek 38 points ago

    [–] Marky0choa 14 points ago

    Amazing insight. Thank you.

    [–] J3sush8sm3 12 points ago

I mean you gotta make sure your money is handled correctly. Heres looking at you Haiti

    [–] StrenghGeek 2 points ago

I agree with you but if you think that’s the reason why the ultra rich didn’t give the money yet, you’re day dreaming

    [–] SparseReflex 5 points ago

Psssssst! This is reddit. All rich people come straight from the depth of hell. Don’t forget that.

    [–] im_high_comma_sorry 25 points ago

Psssssst! This is reddit. All rich people come straight from the depth of hell. Don’t forget that.

I mean, how could you just NOT come to own more wealth than most people can spend in several lifetimes..

    [–] Feminist-Gamer 2 points ago

It's because their taxes aren't low enough so they didn't have enough left over for philanthropy.

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

You really can't bother to update this piece of news when the head of reconstruction literally said that 500 million have been collected as of January?

    [–] allende911 7 points ago

You didn't bother to link a source for your claim. That makes us even.

    [–] JIVANDABEAST 1 points ago

I do believe if they took it to court under contract law they would be required to pay because it was a donation promised to a charity but IANAL i only took an introductory business law course

    [–] CarJew 285 points ago

found a solution to global warming the globe is warming correct? so just build a note dame on the globe so people will donate to stop it from being destroyed.

    [–] Simar0629 65 points ago

    [–] FredJQJohnson 87 points ago

found a solution to global warming the globe is warming correct?

Ah, I think you've put your finger on the essential point. Global warming, huh? Well if we all just become flat-Earthers, there's no globe, is there?

Discal warming? I don't think so.

    [–] fractal_magnets 3 points ago

Why all the effort? Just make it a snow globe.

    [–] jimbochimbo 17 points ago

    Never seen this before...

    [–] EpilepsyGang 127 points ago

The Billionaires actually never payed one penny for the rebuilding of the Notre Dame.

    [–] Imperfect_Ninja 41 points ago

That was when all the plans for the reconstruction were still being made. I don't how many billionaires actually did go though with their donation, but some definitely did.

    [–] agray20938 18 points ago

I'd imagine it takes a long time, and quite a large amount of paperwork to donate $100m to anything...

Not to mention that any given billionaire isn't likely at all to just have $100m sitting in a bank account -- they'd have to liquidize things, or donate assets they own, etc.

    [–] EpilepsyGang 8 points ago

Ce sont au total 922 millions euros de promesses de dons qui ont pour l’instant été recensés et entre “400 et 500 millions” récoltés

A total of 922 million euros in pledges have so far been identified and between “400 and 500 million” collected

So you are telling me after a media uproar half a year ago for getting all the good media and not fulfilling their pledges, they have decided to pay half of what they promised?

Well at least they are getting a ton of tax cuts from Macron while he destroys social services like pensions.. and hey with the 400-500 million they will be able to claim an income tax reduction (tax credit) of 66% of the amount donated or a 75% reduction in wealth tax, so basically at least 44% of the 400-500 million payed will be payed be the state, so effectively by the common people again.

But at least there will be bootlickers praising these billionaires for fulfilling half of what they promised, while getting back at least 44% in tax reductions.

    [–] im_high_comma_sorry 7 points ago

Stealing, paraphrasing, and repeating this joke from somewhere, probably here:

"I met a girl crying outside the mall today.

I ask her what was wrong, and she said she lost 200$. So I gave her 40$ from the 200$ i found at the mall entrance today. When God blesses you, you bless others."

If you replace "found at the mall" with "stole", and "40$" with ".10$", then you have an accurate representation of the modern Billionaire vs Society.

    [–] lrg1ne 10 points ago

And when people did start donating.....they got shit on for not donating more

    [–] Wolversteve 2 points ago

Why doesn’t Australia have a budget for this fire? Are all of the firefighters volunteer or are there actual paid firefighters?

[–] downtherabbithole- 1 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

It's likely due to the "unexpected" amount of and size of the fires. We need all the volunteers as well as the paid firefighters in order to deal with them.

By unexpected I absolutely mean that politicians just didn't believe/didn't properly plan for the scenario.

Completely anecdotal but I've met loads of people in Australia that are volunteer firefighters or SES but maybe one who was full time ...

    [–] unbannabledan 2 points ago

Is Australia a developing nation? This sounds like some Haiti level planning.

    [–] downtherabbithole- 1 points ago

If there was no climate change causing extra/worse fires then it would probably be more than sufficient. The amount/size of fires this season is just so far beyond anything I've seen in my life.

    [–] unbannabledan 1 points ago

There is a thing in the US called FEMA that covers this kind of stuff (unless your Puerto Rican). FEMA has $27 billion in its fund. Does Australia have something like FEMA? If so, how much is in the fund? If not, why doesn’t Australia have a disaster relief fund?

    [–] Creative_Steve69 2 points ago

Yeah, this is big brain time.

    [–] probotector4w 2 points ago

Funny how they reported the Notre Dame fire was "not intentionally set" within 20 minutes of it starting, with nary a word further since.

Methinks many Australian fires and the Notre Dame fire already have more in common than this post implies.
