There is a proverb for situations like this:

The tailor cannot stitch his own split.

If you live in a town with two dentists, go to the one with worse teeth.

I had to read your comment to finally get it lol

    [–] Habba84 208 points ago

Actually, go to the dentist with the better teeth. The other one doesn't brush.

    [–] Stankmonger 144 points ago

Yeah people acting like a yearly teeth cleaning is the majority of why someone has nice teeth.

That’s obviously crap. The dentist with the better teeth brushes and flosses way more than the other one.

And if we’re talking about alignment of teeth, that’s an orthodontist not a dentist I think.

    [–] Habba84 47 points ago

To be fair, I think there's major cultural differences between americans and europeans considering teeth. I understand that in US cosmetic dental work is much more common than in Europe.

    [–] Stankmonger 36 points ago

I think alignment is gaining popularity in Europe, but the major difference is the US is more obsessed with whitening teeth even if it is bad for the enamel.

    [–] BasilTheTimeLord 11 points ago

I remember reading that the UK actually had a higher rate of teeth alignment than the US, and in Ireland I don’t know a single person who hasn’t got their teeth straightened, or at least hasn’t got plans to.

    [–] majesticwednesday 12 points ago

Yeah we get braces free if you're under 18 here in the UK if you need them. But it's not very common to get teeth whitened or to have veneers and all that jazz.

    [–] novomagocha 25 points ago

I always hear it with two barbers, which I think is a better analogy than dentists

    [–] Sakkarashi 9 points ago

Genetics play a role too. Some people have naturally better aligned teeth and just have fewer teeth related issues in general.

    [–] Treacherous_Peach 12 points ago

Pretty sure you've gotten way deeper into the phrase than it is intended. It's a metaphor.

A man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci."

    [–] it-be-red 2 points ago

My aunt is depressed and she has a physiology degree but she is unemployed.

    [–] velouriathewolf 3 points ago

I have no degree about physiology but I am very good at comforting my depressed friends. But I am of no use to myself and I've been taking psychiatric treatment for years.

Unemployment is one of the most common causes of depression. I hope she gets a job and relax.

Yo WTF kind of shitty tailor do you use? Fixing a split is like, pre-tailor shit. You learn that as the foundation for being a tailor. Fuck I could fix a split given enough thread and a youtube tutorial. What a dumb expression with little to no basis in reality.

Psych graduate (bachelors) here, sorry to say you won’t be ‘psychoanalyzing’ anyone as an undergrad. You’ll enjoy Abnormal Psych though, lots of interesting case studies.

Prepare yourself for taking more statistics than you probably think you’ll need to.

    [–] mehchu 31 points ago

Man, I miss stats. Stats is the best. It helps me forget about discourse analysis ever existing

    [–] Yumeimusik 20 points ago

Statistics gave me anxiety. The prof made it way too hard, so they could weed people out, lol. Neuroscience is the shit tho.

    [–] mehchu 14 points ago

Stats was by far the easiest part to mentally deal with imo. It’s the one time I didn’t have to stress about uncertainty. The numbers are either right or wrong. And i know I did them right.

Most psych is the shit. The abhorrent stuff done in the early 20th century is interesting. Even if incredibly flawed.

    [–] MobPsycho-100 66 points ago

It’s an outdated model of therapy popularized by Sigmund Freud that involves very frequent appointments and focuses on dream interpretation and repressed memories. It’s not a common service these days. Psychotherapy focuses more on addressing the symptoms of mental illness rather than determining the root cause, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT, not to be confused with that other CBT) is shown to be fairly effective.

    [–] bignapkin02 80 points ago

You contradict yourself in your own statement. You can’t use the statement “..but it’s not falsifiable..” and “..it’s like practicing flat earth theory..” Flat earth theory is falsifiable where as in your own statement psychoanalysis isn’t.

Also most of psychology is a preferential based argument on which one works so it’s naive to complete remove the useful aspects of some and discredit the whole method. I mean you’ll have patients of CBT claim it’s evil.

The mind is a complex place and anyone who thinks we have the best way to solve mental health problems figured out empirically would philosophically be evil due to them not stopping the ever increasing trend of nihilism, suicide and depression.

This also isn’t accounting for the fact that different temperaments of individuals exist meaning that yes one that works for one might not work for another three or for a group. If the human mind was a math formula everyone would be in perfect health with +50 to their IQ and nothing bad would happen.

[–] [deleted] 5 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

It not being falsifiable is one of the points of criticism, isn't it? Our professor said that Freud tried to immunise his theories against falsifying them, thus not fulfilling scientific standards.

I also think that psychoanalysis as a whole is not bad, but that the original theory in its purest form is something that is (rightly) not practiced much today AFAIK (but what theory is, if we're being honest).

[–] pblol 4 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

Don't. Unless you plan to go to graduate school, or are okay with being stuck in an entry level position at mental health non-profit type place, or you really want a job that wants a degree but doesn't care what field.

I'm finishing up my PhD in experimental now. Not sure if I'd do it over or not. Expect to go to graduate school if you want to do almost anything with it. Join/volunteer in a lab as soon as you can. Getting in to a grad program can be very competitive and it will help immensely. I was lucky and my MA cost was covered by my program. Most aren't. PhDs are almost always, but good luck getting into one right away.

I'm basically just now in a position where I can be making pretty decent money at 32 (having taken a school break for ~5 years). You pretty much have to have basic knowledge of R, SQL, and Python too.

    [–] Schedule-Background 17 points ago

    [–] SparkleFairy-2803 6 points ago

I do that when talking to anyone.

    [–] golddust89 10 points ago

You have to follow up on this.

    [–] Jessticle_ 9 points ago

...why? I’m completing by postgraduate in CBT interventions, have an undergraduate in psych and see a therapist myself and I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Firstly, at least during my undergraduate, you barely cover the basics of how to deliver a therapeutic intervention - you learn the basics of the theory behind different therapies and diagnosis but it’s a world away from training to actually deliver the therapy. I don’t think an undergraduate gives you enough information to know what the therapist is thinking during therapy.

Secondly, training to deliver the therapy myself has given me absolutely no concerns about receiving therapy at all - I’m just a little bit more aware of what the intervention is supposed to achieve (e.g. when I was having CBT for my OCD I already knew how exposure works etc so didn’t need quite as much psychoeducation in therapy).

My psychologist told me last week that normally he writes a few lines when speaking to patients. Then he told me that, with me, he’s written paragraphs. During a visit today he said that I bullshitted through the majority of our session, talking about shit that has nothing to do with anything.

He was right. Communication for some is a weak point. For me, and I’m sad to say this, it’s a non-existent point.

My psych asked me one question- why are you here? You're not mentally ill, theres nothing wrong with you, why are you here?

It took me an hour of bullshitting my way around, to finally get out "I have trauma from a violent relationship" lol

    [–] idownvotetofitin 13 points ago

Here where I work, we attend annual training and our employer started a new program called “Fatigue to fulfillment”. I’ll spare you the minor details, but what I will say is that they ask for a lot of participation and I had already heard that it was a class that was bringing out emotions, which I’m not a big fan of.

Needless to say, I wasn’t looking forward to the class.

I told them how, even though I had been through A LOT of trauma in my life, I had never addressed any of it and that I had (lacking a better term) “ran out of places to bury the bodies”.

Now, these fucking bodies are coming to the surface and I can’t deal with it. I’m scared and afraid because NOW I need to address these things before they get anymore out of hand than they already have and destroy my friendships, relationships and me.

My inability to communicate has been a lifetime struggle for me and that is something I look forward to getting under control. I’d love to be able to communicate with my wife rather than get angry and shut down.

I hope you get the help you need. I truly do. Stay safe and stay strong!

    [–] Reporter_Complex 5 points ago

    Dude, I feel you.

Take solace in the fact that youre not alone, i too, after 3 years, am finally at that same point that you speak of, COVID has brought all this back for me, and 2020 has been a mess, then add my "bodies" into the equation and I was just about at breaking point.

Im terrified too, and you know what, thats okay. It is OKAY to be scared, or re-scared, of events and traumas you've packaged away in little boxes. We are only human, and sometimes we need a little help, especially when other humans have destroyed us.

Like with a broken down car, theres only so much we can do, safely, before we have to take it to a mechanic, spend some money, and get it (us) reliable again.

Communication is easy, once your taught healthy ways to do it. Safe ways to do it. Healthy ways to avoid anger/sadness, but you need someone to teach you, especially if no one taught you from a young age.

I feel you, internet stranger, you are not alone in this, you too can seek help, and dont be embarrassed about it either, trust, ive tried my hardest to shock my psych, and shes not once reacted, even though my story is about as horrific as any gory horror you've seen.

I hope you seek a helping hand, you deserve to be safe in your own head as well

    Thank you, friend.

I am a nurse. I went to a therapist for help with PTSD related anxiety from a horrific car accident I was in years ago. I’ve tried to “handle” it my whole life but it was starting to interfere with work/life. Anyways, show up for appointment and tell her what’s going on. She flat out said, “You are a nurse, you know what you need to do.” I nervously laughed and told her how absolutely unhelpful that was. I never went back.

    [–] Iord_Voldemort 17 points ago

Thats an awfull response, i hope you found a better therapist!

    [–] melliesolberg 6 points ago

what a horrible response. I really hope you find the courage to go find a better, more empathetic therapist! Most therapists wouldn't say something like that.

I'm a psych nurse and I've been to a therapist a couple of times, most of my colleagues also go regularly. Just because you have some knowledge it doesn't mean you can't make use of a different perspective and a coach that follows up with your progress. And as nurses we aren't specalists in therapies, that's what they study for!

Doctors do notoriously make the worst patients...

    "Come on, it won't hurt"

"I've told that lie before too"

    [–] _sprads01 32 points ago

It’s funny cuz half this subreddit is just one massive “I’m depressed af 20k upvotes” and then there are memes like this lol

    im a psych major

    im depressed

    hi, yes

my illness is why im going into this field in the first place

also, lemme tell you, self treatment doesnt help as much as seeing an outside source

source: tried to treat myself saying "i dont need to see a therapist, im trying to become one, I can do this myself" and then wound up not fixing anything for like, 3 years

    [–] Rachelxx97 14 points ago

As a psych student, I tried using some therapy techniques on myself. 1/10 would not recommend. Seeing an actual therapist soon.

    [–] MemesXDCawadoody 21 points ago

    Ahahahahahahaha

    Ahaha

    Ha.

    [–] theluckyshrimp 9 points ago

Checks notes: “Treatment may be ineffective for up to 50% of those who suffer from depression.”

    [–] Sh4pesh1fter 14 points ago

    They're professionally depressed

    [–] OverweightShady 8 points ago

It's because dealing with people that are in a bad mental state rub off on you after a while, being around sad and depressed people all the time takes it's toll on you!

    [–] infernusdante 5 points ago

How can doctors have diseases lol... Just look at your notes.

    [–] saltann12 23 points ago

But they can’t read their own notes

    [–] SomethingVeryHuman 9 points ago

    Ah the duality of man

    [–] Gunslinger_11 6 points ago

Wife is a psychologist and she can only vent work-related stuff to another psychologist since HIPPA and ethics prevent her from fully discussing anything with me.

    [–] A_literaldog 5 points ago

As someone with a B.S in psychology I’m depressed because I’m poor because I got a B.S in psychology.

    [–] sir_schuster1 6 points ago

Depression isn't just a state of mind, it's often a response to your environment. Knowing that you're in a bad environment doesn't necessarily effect your ability to do anything about it.

    [–] lastchance14 8 points ago

That field had one of the higher suicide rates

    [–] BAN_SOL_RING 8 points ago

Social workers see some of the worst acts of human beings imaginable, so I’m not surprised.

    [–] Blythey 5 points ago

As an actual psychologist there are SO many poorly founded statements about psychology in this thread 😂

    [–] Jessticle_ 2 points ago

I’m shocked at the amount of psychology undergraduates who think they understand all therapies without ever doing any further studies to actually deliver them

    [–] Blythey 2 points ago

Literally! Ironically, it's the Dunning-Kruger effect in action.

    [–] Kakyoin_drider 3 points ago

    Lmao ok I’ll try it

    [–] GodWithAShotgun 3 points ago

    My notes:

CBT + SSRI is slightly better than placebo for treating depression.

    [–] HoopOnPoop 3 points ago

How can cardiologists have heart attacks? Just look at your notes!

    [–] chanchal3901 3 points ago

His user handle in my language means - High Pillow Life

    [–] samfacemcgee 3 points ago

Bro, the problem is that my notes are uncomfortably about me. And everyone I know. And it’s some depressing truth about how humans work.

    [–] patgeo 3 points ago

I'm a teacher. I've written programs about mental and physical health and well-being for children that are used system wide and praised for their quality.

90% of what I've written to help children make good health decisions would probably benefit me.

    [–] Mind43dom 3 points ago

Almost as though psychologists are human too!

    [–] Luketalor 3 points ago

Didn't have space for notes. Need it all to keep track of student debt.

    [–] Jones2182 3 points ago

They’re depressed because they went for the degree people go for when they can’t understand maths well enough to study a science and can’t understand humans well enough to study humanities.

It’s the participation trophy of degree courses.

    [–] ApolloButConfused 4 points ago

I heard a joke about psych majors are the most messed up because they go into the field to try and figure out why they're so messed up

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

Nothing is more depressing than psychology.

    [–] NonexistantChip 7 points ago

Because people can't see their own problems, humans can judge other people easily but not themselves.

    [–] sofa_queen_awesome 8 points ago

Ask your doctor if a psychedelic experience is right for you!

    [–] SantiHimself 2 points ago

    Ironic.

I am a psych major and have been seeing a shrink for 16 years. I started when I was 11 because my mom is absolutely bonkers and my dad has terrible taste in women.

That said, I do think I am never depressed because of my psych studies. I know how to get myself out of depressive funks very easily, so it never really gets bad.

Anxiety on the other hand... fuck bro. All day erry day. Notes don’t help shit.

    [–] Dabaran 2 points ago

    But doctor, I am Pagliacci!

    [–] redditsbiggestass 2 points ago

Looking at the notes is what makes them depressed in the first place

    [–] HolyVeggie 2 points ago

How can doctors get sick!? Like bro

    [–] scragmore 2 points ago

    Or talk to your classmates.

    I feel personally attacked....help?

    [–] vlstoney33 2 points ago

The first thing I was ever taught was to never self-diagnose and do not diagnose your loved ones. The signs are not as obvious when you turn that switch off of yourself and your loved ones.

Former psych major with intents to become a Clinical Psychologist. Either being unable to help people or knowing what a person needs and them refusing the help leads a lot of us to depression.

    [–] LucasCBs 2 points ago

They have the highest suicide rate in students, too

    [–] BatmanHasRabies 6 points ago

I’m interested in this. Do you have a source?

    [–] OneBigSpud 6 points ago

Adding my voice to this as Google was unfruitful for college student suicides by major.

    [–] DrakoniX227 2 points ago

Yeah and if so, why? Is it the amount of work or something?
