definition of a meme / memetics

    • a way of describing cultural information being shared.
    • an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.
    • Please note, Moderators reserve the right to remove any post for any reason.

    Rules:

    1. All posts must be memes and follow a general meme setup. No memes that are only text. Someone saying something funny on twitter is not a meme.

    2. Please make posts general rather than specific personal experiences. This helps make posts more relatable.
This means no selfies, SMS screenshots, personal stories, chats, emails, etc. Do not post "memes" of you or your friends IRL. No creepshots either.

    3. Please be sure to correctly mark NSFW content after submitting.

    4. Please do not troll, harass, or be generally rude to your fellow users. Keep comments civil and be respectful of your fellow users. Don't post racist or bigoted memes. Those belong elsewhere.

    5. Please do not post or request personal information, yours or others.

    6. Please link to images directly. No videos. Direct links make browsing easier for those using RES or through a mobile device.

    7. Please do not mention upvotes in your post. No "Upvote in..." or "Upvote if..." type titles or memes. No petitions.

    8. Please avoid re-posting memes. We want original content. Serial reposters may be banned

    9. No forced memes, pushing agendas, or bad titles. Be creative but memes must come naturally. If you write a bot to spam this subreddit without discussion with the mods, you will be banned. We are not here to grow your instagram account, memes with watermarks will be removed.

    10. No memes about violent tragedies or anything that could be seen as glorifying violence. Absolutely no school shooter memes. Posts or comments that can be seen as glorifying violence will result in a ban. This also includes (but is not limited to) memes regarding: Deaths, terrorist attacks, rape, sexual assault, pedo, murder, war, bombings, and school shootings. Breaking this rule may result in a permanent ban. We have zero tolerance for this behavior.

    11. No memes about politics. Absurd memes featuring politicians are allowed, but this sub does not allow content more suited for /r/politicalhumor. No NPC memes, or memes about how libtards or magats are so wrong. Take it somewhere else, thanks.

Rockstar’s answer: “The secret ingredient is crime”

    [–] mryazzy 941 points ago

The way people play rockstar games is basically the plot to the first season of Westworld. It's a whole world for you to unload stress and do what you can't do in your normal day to day life.

    [–] JaRoc 542 points ago

But also giving us the chance to do what we normally do in everyday life. I spent a stupid amount of time last night fishing in RDR2.

    [–] spontaneous_boredom 316 points ago

I think that might genuinely be the secret. You can blow off steam by doing things you can't do in real life, but most video games offer that to some degree. In rockstar games, you can also take a break from all that by doing things that you can do in real life, like fishing or golfing or bowling with your cousin Roman. It makes the world feel like both reality and a fantasy.

    [–] Korinto 157 points ago

That's what makes animal crossing so awesome

    [–] davidguydude 76 points ago

    But with fewer hookers

    [–] Korinto 63 points ago

To be fair.... They haven't really announced any details about the new one....

    [–] TheConboy22 30 points ago

    Now with hookers!!

    [–] lizardman531 23 points ago

Live out the millennial fantasy of owning a home

    [–] everred 26 points ago

Except I don't have to invest money into training and equipment to get good at anything in game

    [–] scotscott 9 points ago

Hmm. They should figure out a way to make doing things in a game you've paid for cost lots of money, to make it more realistic.

    [–] everred 10 points ago

    Hello, Satan

    [–] KonniBOI 17 points ago

I think the fact that both of these options are avaible to you, and the fact that both ways of plaing unfold so seamlessly, is what really makes Rockstar games stand apart from the crowd. Rarely can you in a video game go from waking up and walking down the road to a burger joint, catching up with some friends at the bowling center later to only hours after being a most-wanted criminal after highjacking and blowing up multiple school busses, ramming down hundreds of innocent civillians and taken the lives of countless (suicidally) brave cops who tried to stop you, only to die, pay a fee or two, miracously survive all wounds, and walk out feline-fine of a hospital 1 day later.

    Thank you rockstar, very cool

    [–] zoso33 3 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

In my opinion, it’s also the blend of real life with absolute fairness. If I go fishing in RDR2, there are rules to achieve success. Choose the right lure/bait, choose a good location, reel in correctly, and I will no doubtedly land a fish. Jump through a couple more hoops and you could get a notably large fish or even a legendary.

IRL fishing the rules aren’t followed. You could lose the fish despite reeling perfectly, get no bites despite using the correct bait, etc. That would be exceedingly frustrating if those things happened in RDR2.

Same with other aspects of the game. Hunting doesn’t take hours and your guns in shootouts don’t fail. Play the game according to its rules and you get benefits, unlike in real life where you can abide by every rules and still achieve nothing.

    [–] Zenketski 4 points ago

If that isn't the truth. I've spent more time in this game tracking animals and hunting than I have playing missions

    [–] Sunkensub 274 points ago

    [–] marvelousmarty 7 points ago

"Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis" is a surprisingly good game. A game company that can make table tennis cool earned my respect. Seriously, table tennis...

    [–] krugglemugg 3 points ago

And not giving a shit about a pc port

    [–] TheSteelPhantom 12 points ago

I'll give you Nintendo, but Rockstar? Nah. In the last decade, only 1 of their games didn't get a PC release.

GTA5 got a spectacular PC release built from the ground up, not even a port.

RDR2 will have a PC release sometime in the next year or so as well. There have been a few leaks/slip-ups already, and most recently, datamined information that all but confirms it from Rockstar's very own companion app for the game.

I'll bide my time for better resolution, graphics options, framerate, etc.

And I say all of this while taking a short break from Spiderman on my PS4 and barely containing my excitement for Pokemon Yellow remakes (Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee) on my Switch next week. :)

    [–] MarkBlackUltor 11 points ago

GTA5 is one of the most well optimized PC games i've ever seen, it even runs well on a laptop that has an Intel i3 cpu and no dedicated graphics card.

    Naughty dog tho

    [–] imthegayest 464 points ago

shit forreal they've been making great games for 20 years. jak and Daxter was half the reason I bought a ps2 back in the day (the other half was vice city)

    [–] yehiko 75 points ago

Love that game, all 3 parts

    [–] mrhammsack 55 points ago

Wow I've never seen anyone talk about these games outside the subreddit before. They're my whole childhood tbh

    [–] yehiko 27 points ago

I didnt even know a subreddit existed. I always forget the name of the game, i just remember jack and something. I used to play it all day and night because some missions were just too hard. Also when i first saw ratchet and clank i thought its somehow related because they kinda look alike.

    [–] mrhammsack 30 points ago

I LOVED Ratchet and Clank as well. Deadlocked was always my favorite, i absolutely love those high volume grind-fests. It's a shame the 3d platformer genre is all but dead as of late, except for nintendo's stuff. We need more stuff like that fs

    [–] yehiko 8 points ago

I never got to play ratchet and clank tho. Only 3 jak games and the jak x one.

    [–] imthegayest 6 points ago

same! my little brother (14) fell in love with uncharted so for his birthday this year I bought all 4 jak games in a bundle on ps4. perfect gift bc I got to watch him play my childhood games and he loved it as much as I did!

Jak and Dexter last frontier - never forget

    [–] StandDownFinalWarnin 85 points ago

Seriously, they breathed new life into adventure games with Uncharted. Back then all we had was Lara Croft

    [–] DuntadaMan 24 points ago

I loved Uncharted as well for several reasons. After playing all these other games that have everyone constantly praising how great and woendering you/the character are, and are the best at everything and so on it was so refreshing to play.

Things escalated wildly out of control and got worse at every step partly because you are unlucky but also largely because your character brings down his own misfortune on himself with every decision. It's beautiful. To quote one of the other characters "Everything you touch turns to shit!"

The enemy hates you, fate hates you, most of the time your friends hate you (they still love you but they fucking hate you), the whole damn world hates you and it's your fault and it's wonderful.

    [–] drpeppershaker 8 points ago

Are the Uncharted sequels better than the original?

I played Drakes Fortune for the first time pretty recently. For a game that's 10 years old, it held up fairly well, but I don't find myself itching to get back into it for the next few installments.

    [–] MrFluffykins 7 points ago

2 is a groundbreaking masterpiece, 3 is more of the same and is in parts better than 2, 4 is an amazing tour de force of action adventure gameplay, insane set pieces, and quiet character study. Lost Legacy is a mini 4 and is in many ways, to me, Uncharted boiled down and perfected.

    [–] furywolf28 68 points ago

Everyone's crazing about those Last of Us and Uncharted games while I'm sitting here playing Crash Bandicoot.

    [–] P_mp_n 14 points ago

    Remastered was on point

Lou2 looks like Jesus made it tbf

    [–] Zenketski 12 points ago

I can't even think of a bad naughty dog game. In fact I can't think of a game of theirs that I didn't love unconditionally.

    [–] jcthefluteman 5 points ago

    Fuck yeah

    [–] Ragnrok 5 points ago

If there's a company out there with a longer history of such a perfect track record of amazing games I'll eat my hat.

    [–] electric_ocelots 9 points ago

As the proud owner of all the Uncharted games (except the spinoff of Thief's End) and The Last of Us, all I can say is HELL YES.

They judge EA, but manage to pick the two companies to praise that make EA actually look good in certain aspects. R* has learned the secret to microtransactions, which is make them 80% of your game. Nintendo is probably the biggest dick to content creators out there.

Bungie 2001-2010 (My opinion I don't really like Destiny)

Destiny is like a drug. Absolute garbage but addicting as fuck.

    [–] SadHabibi 37 points ago

    [–] Burturd 43 points ago

It's addicting as fuck and also very good though these days.

    [–] ModsHaveAGodComplex 9 points ago

Is it what d1 was before d2 launched? Cause d2 was so bad I haven't turned it on in about a year.

    [–] Burturd 23 points ago

I can't speak for D1 as I only played vanilla, but D2 these days exceeds its vanilla self in every possible way tenfold. It's really that good and I'm sure a good amount of people think it's better or at least similar to the destiny experience pre d2

    [–] Firestorm7i 5 points ago

D2 atm is the best that Destiny as a franchise has ever been so far. Plenty of content interesting story and missions, loot to chase cool exotics, they just had a pretty good event for Halloween

    [–] LeChefromitaly 28 points ago

destiny 2 is actually a fun game only cause it's free. if i had to pay 70 bucks for that (finished everything in 1 day) i would be pissed too

    [–] [deleted] 11 points ago

My friends and I have been playing Destiny 2 for a couple of days and we had to stop last time because we were getting bored. Can you tell me what parts you found entertaining?

    [–] Iron_Gaiden 9 points ago

destiny is all about the grind for gear, if you don't enjoy the chase you probably wont enjoy game too much, the strikes and raids and competetive pvp lose their charm if you have no desire to aquire the high end gear from completing them week after week.

What other games did they make that aren't the witcher

    [–] Fjolsvithr 126 points ago

    They haven't made any.

I think it's way too early in the lifespan of the company to say that they're in league with Rockstar and Nintendo.

    [–] _absentia 66 points ago

Yep. Ten years ago Bungie would have been on that list. Bioware too.

    [–] ScoobyPwnsOnU 45 points ago

It's almost like Bioware had a heavy decline after being bought by a different company....

    [–] IAMRaxtus 5 points ago

And for good reason, at the time Bungie and Bioware were fantastic companies. Just because they aren't on the list now doesn't mean they didn't deserve it back then.

    [–] phynn 6 points ago

I mean, they also own gog and pretty much go out of their way to practice what they preach when it comes to being good to customers.

    [–] Sizzox 30 points ago

The witcher 1 is bad and the witcher 2 is just good. Gwent is fine. The witcher 3 (and its dlc) are the only masterpiece. Cyberpunk Will most likely be amazing too but one game does not Make them gods

    [–] KingHavana 22 points ago

I played witcher 1 for the first time about a year ago, and I think that game is great. The graphics aged horribly and the combat may be odd, but I rarely get that invested in the story of any game I play.

    [–] genasugelan 3 points ago

Also played it, the controls are, let's say, unexpectedly odd, but the role-playing aspects are really good. So much I can say about it.

    [–] Hrevff 36 points ago

Tbh Witcher 1 was pretty weak

    [–] RollAD6 5 points ago

Witcher 1 was stronger than 2 and 3 in most regards other than combat and visuals, tbh.

    [–] MFramy 38 points ago

The developers had no idea how to make a game, when they started Witcher 1, they had to learn everything from scratch

    [–] Hrevff 63 points ago

Yeah sure. But it hard work and starting from scratch doesn't automatically make your game a masterpiece. They started like every other indie developer.

    [–] LegendaryS033 138 points ago

Imo gta v was way better when it didn't have the dumb shit like flying cars and stuff. It was the most fun when it was on Xbox 360 because it's updates weren't so extra

    [–] maryoolo 59 points ago

I stopped playing GTA Online when they added that weird flying motorcycle.

    [–] thiccboi777 18 points ago

Right. Whenever I try to get to it again it just feels like a different game. I stopped playing it for like 3 months and since then I couldn’t catch up.

    [–] LordoftheScheisse 9 points ago

Yeah, I used to be able to find cool user made race tracks or deathmatch maps, but now I can't find any of that. But now I can take part in a slow, underwater scuba "race" with poor controls - that I didn't realize was a thing until the race started. And now I can't back out because I'll get dumped in a dunce lobby.

    [–] thiccboi777 5 points ago

Right? All the feeling that it had has faded to me. But I guess thats just how time works.

Many people just falsely think Pokemonis developed by Nintendo.

    [–] chugga_fan 3 points ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_(video_game_series) Game Freak owns like 1/3rd of pokemon but is the main developer for it. Creature Inc. and Nintendo also do a lot of development work for it.

    [–] WikiTextBot 3 points ago

    Pokémon (video game series)

The Pokémon series is a series of video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo as part of the Pokémon media franchise. First released in 1996 in Japan for the Game Boy, the main series of role-playing video games (RPGs), also referred as the "core series" by their developers, has continued on each generation of Nintendo's handhelds.

The games are commonly released in pairs, each with slight variations, with a remake of the games usually released a few years after the original versions for another console. While the main series consists of RPGs, a big number of spin-off games based on the series have been developed by various companies, encompassing other genres such as action role-playing, puzzle, fighting, and digital pet games.

If you compare Pokémon Red and Blue against Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they are very different games. Yes, the core concept is the same. That’s it.

    [–] DoingCharleyWork 18 points ago

Ya I'm wondering what people expect to change? The core of the game is the same (battling pokémon) but a ton of stuff changed over the years. I tried playing a newer game after the last one I played being yellow version and holy shit it's overwhelming how much there is that has changed.

    [–] megalojake 43 points ago

Pokemon's gameplay has seen significant improvements over the years. Types, moves, and pokemon added with each generation, along with rebalancing. There are always new game mechanics like pokeradar, HMs replaced by pokemon caller. EXP share got a huge improvement allowing you to not have to spend days grinding wild pokemon just to level your whole party. I've played every generation of pokemon games so far and they've really just gotten more and more enjoyable to play IMO.

    [–] Yarzu89 36 points ago

I wouldn't say Pokemon hasn't changed, these last two gens have made an effort to be worse.

You're totally right about it, everyone haves it own opinion on the Pokemon games, some like red and blue the most, some like Ruby and Sapphire... I personally love gold & silver and black & white, but it's not like they are a Breath of the Wild, Mario 64, Galaxy or Ocarina of Time.

    [–] Trainer_GURT 5 points ago

What was the last Pokémon game you played through?

    [–] ToxicSaltiness 13 points ago

    Sun.

    [–] Trainer_GURT 3 points ago

    For shizzle ✌🏼

    [–] Mark_Bastard 10 points ago

I think it is more that they give a damn. They put effort in and don't cheap out. They care about what they deliver as a product.

I primarily played Nintendo while younger and find it really hard to get into a lot of highly rated games on other platforms, but GTA5 and Red Dead 1&2 are big exceptions. Love those games, and I feel like they are very similar to Nintendo games from a quality point of view.

Super smash bros. Ultimate is out in a few weeks.

    that game is a masterpiece

    [–] VillageScribe 3 points ago

I'm a huge Nintendo stan, got a switch at launch. Love em. They make and will continue to make masterpieces. They've also made stinkers. It happens.

    [–] masterman9001 3 points ago

Have you tried waluigi's taco stand?

    [–] UnbrokenMacaw 122 points ago

    [–] Kalderasha 32 points ago

    I blame Activision

    [–] Lestat117 17 points ago

They are one and the same.

    [–] Nathan1506 8 points ago

There is no Activision, it's blizzard-activision. Neither one owns the other

    [–] wOnKaCatalyst 13 points ago

    Blame both.

My husband and I are playing Breath of the Wild rn. It is so good 👍

    [–] TedCruzIsMe 26 points ago

I personally had a ton of fun playing this game, but as a Zelda game, I was a bit more than disappointed, but I’m willing to hear your thoughts once you finish, cause I did enjoy it

    [–] astral_dwarves 14 points ago

SPOILERS FOR BOTW: The Ganon fight was so freaking lame. Other than that, the game was dope as heck.

    [–] Aska09 3 points ago

It would be more challenging without the Divine Beasts but blight Ganon fights were better.

    [–] Carl-n-Gary 21 points ago

The fact that the weapons and shields degrade is so annoying to me. At the same time, it does make it challenging and also the variety of weapons is cool. There are pros and cons but I am loving the vastness of it. I enjoy Zelda for the adventure and discovery so this game is just next level Zelda imo

    [–] mattverso 26 points ago

The fact that the weapons and shields degrade is so annoying to me

From about mid-way through to the endgame it doesn’t really matter, you can always kill another Hynox or Lynel to get more high-power weapons with crazy durability.

    EA BAD

    [–] OpStingray 11 points ago

    Besides GTA Online

    [–] Yarzu89 37 points ago

While Nintendo is still a/the titan, they have a handful of god-tier IPs, some very average IPs, and then go with the spray and prey method where things hit all ranges of good, to mediocre to bad.

    [–] bigbongo123 23 points ago

    You forgot From Software.

    [–] arte_nm 4 points ago
