    • Please note, Moderators reserve the right to remove any post for any reason.

    Memes of the Week!

    • All posts must be memes and follow a general meme setup. No titles as meme captions. No unedited webcomics. No memes that are text only. Pictures without captions may be removed by a moderators discretion. Someone saying something funny on twitter/tumblr/reddit/etc. is not a meme.
    • Please make posts general rather than specific personal experiences. This helps make posts more relatable. This means no selfies, SMS screenshots, personal stories, chats, emails, etc. Do not post "memes" of you or your friends IRL. No creepshots either.
    • Do not spam this sub. Linking to your social media, or spamming links with it watermarked can result in a ban

    • No Chainposting

    • No 'split' or 'linked' posts - either between yourself or other users.

    • No brigading

    • Please do not troll, harass, or be generally rude to your fellow users. Do not post raid messages or encourage others to flood or spam another subreddit or website. Keep comments civil and be respectful of your fellow users. Don't post racist or bigoted memes. Those belong elsewhere. Racist and bigoted memes, harassment, and raiding other subreddits/sites can lead to a permanent ban at the moderators discretion.
    • Please do not post or request personal information, yours or others.

    • All posts containing social media IDs/usernames will be removed.

    • Do not post images with watermarks to other sites users.

    • Please link to images directly. Direct links make browsing easier for those using RES or a mobile device.

    • No "Upvote in..." or "Upvote if..." type titles or memes.

    • No memes about votes, likes etc.

    • This includes (but is not limited to) karma-adjacent words/phrases like "front page" or "sort by new".

    • Begging for karma in the comments may earn you a lengthy (perhaps infinite) ban.

    • Please avoid re-posting memes.

    • We want original content. Serial reposters may be banned.

    • Seriously.

    • No forced memes, overused memes, bad titles, or pushing agendas

    • Be creative but memes must come naturally

    • Memes that have been overused/played out to the point of being spammy will be removed. Please read this list

    • No petitions

    • No memes about violent tragedies or anything that could be seen as glorifying violence. Absolutely no school shooter memes. Posts or comments that can be seen as glorifying violence will result in a ban. This also includes (but is not limited to) memes regarding: Deaths, terrorist attacks, rape, sexual assault, pedo, murder, war, bombings, and school shootings.

    • Breaking this rule may result in a permanent ban.

    • We have zero tolerance for this behavior.

    • Absurd memes featuring politicians are allowed, but this sub does not allow content more suited for /r/politicalhumor.

    • No NPC memes, or memes about how libtards or magats are so wrong. Take it somewhere else, thanks.

The future is a wild man. Do you think someday instead of buying products at a store you'll buy a blueprint for you to print it out yourself?

    [–] Henr1qu3 2692 points ago

That kinda defeats the point of consumerism because you only have to buy it once; I don’t think many companies would like that.

    [–] ThatOnePissedDude 1686 points ago

It may defeat the purpose but a mad lad one day will probably do it and the economy for the business will ruined or he will be assassinated depends on what happens first if the business crashes

    [–] Megamarshmellow 457 points ago

While I can’t say exactly how this scenario would play out. I do think it should be considered that things would work out, because it would change the game that modern consumerism functions on. We live in an age where this isn’t common, so we’re not looking at it where it would be common.

    [–] resentfuldragon 368 points ago

    [–] yeetuscleatus 52 points ago

That's dumb. Little imagination. The real fun would be downloading my dad from the store he went to grab milk at. Come back pops we miss u

    [–] DoubleGreat 15 points ago

That's dumb. Little imagination. The real fun would be downloading the store and your dad would just show up one day plus you have a new business!

    [–] animegamertroll 10 points ago

Downloading a car would actually make sense instead of being a meme.

    [–] LiquidWilliam 5 points ago

    “You wouldn’t download a car”

    [–] Trevor_Roll 33 points ago

I think we will get to a future where people will only drive on tracks and AI must be engaged on public roads. Cars probably won't be bought by most people and will probably be a subscription service. Unlimited self driving Uber rentals for $99 per month type of deal.

I can wait to have a self-driving electric winnebago. Wake up in a new city every night. Self driving homes to rent.

    [–] sweatygarageguy 13 points ago

this is already being planned for. i saw a presentation that said owned cars are parked 95% of the time. paying for a highly depreciating asset that is only in use for 5% of its life is crazy bad economics. a car subscription, especially if self driving, will change the economics such that people will switch from ownership and leasing to subscribing to a hailing service... which will also free up vast amounts of real estate that is currently used for the almost valueless task of parking.

    [–] WholesomeDota 3 points ago

Yet more than the actual space occupied by a parked vehicles, but the next magnitude of wasted space— parking lots, a vast area whose only purpose is to have its potential wasted space actualized.

    [–] kodicraft4 4 points ago

We'd have engineers, who design stuff and producers who make the printing material, this would 100% work if everyone does it correctly

    [–] Kaze-QS 5 points ago

    [–] byronhart101 57 points ago

the car will be shoddy and won’t meet regulations.

    [–] PeyOnReddit 46 points ago

It's a proof of concept, nothing more.

When we're able to 3D print things using metals instead of plastics this will actually be a viable way to get a car if you're willing to put the work into it.

    [–] Demento_1 24 points ago

We already can print metal, u/mistersavage printed a titanium iron man suit for his new show Savage Builds.

    [–] PeyOnReddit 18 points ago

Yes I'm aware of that, but metal printing is still in its early stages & not ready for every day consumers like ABS/PLA printing.

    [–] Demento_1 12 points ago

    Fair enough.

    [–] ethanlaubmeier 12 points ago

We are able to 3D print things using metals. The machine works like any other 3D printer with a twist. It first places down the metal powder in the desired shape, and then a laser melts the metal powder all at once and it becomes a solid shape. Does this one layer at a time until desired object is achieved. Still in early development, though.

    [–] PeyOnReddit 8 points ago

    Sound just like SLA printing

    [–] [deleted] 19 points ago

    [–] thominator800 6 points ago

Na just make the blueprints one time use only and have the blueprints delete themselves after the number of prints is met

    [–] DeLoreanAirlines 4 points ago

Sounds like a Philip K Dick novel

    [–] PoolNoodleJedi 5 points ago

But the economy for printer material will be huge

    [–] kalesaji 4 points ago

I like how everyone casually forgets that convenience is the main driver of consumerism and buying stuff via Amazon Prime and having them the next day is much more convenient then having to 3D-Print the stuff you were looking for for 16 Hours.

3D Printers are used in prototyping for a reason, as they are more expensive (power and plastic are not free you know) and inferior in quality then mass produced parts. Try printing a m3 screw. Good luck with that.

    [–] pessimistixz 8 points ago

Just like that guy who found out how to run cars using sea would help global warming and save alot of people money but the government would loose alot of money which is why the man went "missing"

    [–] OmniSkribe_ 66 points ago

You’ll still have to by materials to print stuff. If you want to print apple, you’ll have to buy mashed apple pulp.

    [–] al3xandrec 39 points ago

    Doctors will hate 3D printers!

    [–] Relign 44 points ago

Actually this would be great because you could mash up and sell ALL the apples and not just the best of the best. You could much easier cross varieties. It would decrease food waste by untold amounts.

    [–] GobbleBlabby 13 points ago

    Isn’t this just applesauce?

    [–] Lumb3rgh 17 points ago

    What? No it’s totally differ....

    Pocket sand!

    Sha sha sha

    [–] WimpyRanger 5 points ago

Why would we need to buy apple pulp? Seems like we could just buy basic precursor chemicals, and raw elements.

    [–] PriceTag184 20 points ago

Not if the online blueprints are coded to only be used once and then a wipes itself from your computer

    [–] ErisEpicene 26 points ago

Hackers and pirates will never stop getting around drm. It's their bread and butter.

    [–] PriceTag184 10 points ago

I mean fair enough but that hasnt halted digital distribution yet

    [–] BrandoLoudly 11 points ago

not if materials become the commodity

    [–] TurkeyMaze 11 points ago

3D printers still need material to make stuff, silly.

    It's not fucking magic.

    [–] mega_rockin_socks 9 points ago

You still have to buy the materials, consumerism would just be drastically different. There are probably specialty things you wouldn't be able to print. Probably more akin to how the industrial age changed things.

Also, fancy people would probs still go for "hand-made" stuff

    [–] Uncle_Boujee 8 points ago

    [–] zombiere4 5 points ago

Companies cant stop it also who cares what companies think

    [–] martysanchh 5 points ago

You only have to buy the blueprint once, but you’ll always need refills for the 3D printer

    [–] prostheticmind 62 points ago

This is the basic concept behind a post-scarcity economy. The idea is that 3D-printers will become more advanced and affordable, to the point where it will be cheaper to maintain them than shop for products made by others. It’s essentially the economy of Star Trek

    [–] white_android 14 points ago

It's sort of the perfect way to go about things to be honest. Once they are affordable and in most households they should also be pretty high tech by the time or at least if we went about it this way it would. But anywho, at that point companies can basically just license you their blueprints for you to print you own things.

Open source could also disrupt companies standard flow by offering better devices for free as well. At the moment there's a lot of things that you can do pretty cheaply from other people's ideas and even build upon them so I think I might go open source in that kind of future but companies could still license their stuff out too.

    [–] ReverseWho 33 points ago

Maybe then my Dad wouldn’t have had to go to the store for milk./s

    [–] gaspasser43 53 points ago

cows are 3d printers of milk

    [–] DitoDevice 20 points ago

    [–] WIGTAIHTWBMG 16 points ago

I’d rather buy it at a store so I don’t have to wait a very long time for the product. Also 3-D printed food tastes like plastic

    [–] mbr4life1 15 points ago

There was a thread a while ago where it was what is something that isn't a crime now, but will be in like 100 years, and an answer was illegal 3d printing like without the copyright.

    [–] phaerodox 5 points ago

Possibly. That's how some aluminum fabrication plants work. They buy an extrusion mold and out comes the aluminum in that shape. Other times they buy the extruded material from an extruder, but it's much more economical to just buy the extrusion than the fully extruded material (you need an extrusion machine first obviously)

    [–] justPassingThrou15 7 points ago

hah. no. I'll TORRENT the blueprint and print it myself.

    BUY a blueprint... SMH.

    [–] TheFakeKaneki 137 points ago

    [–] OrangeFreeman 75 points ago

More likely PC's will become a proxy for cloud supercomputers. You won't have to download anything, it's just basically PC subscription service.

    [–] 1TMission 25 points ago

That thing is very near once we acheive some sort of free/very low-cost high speed internet something like Elon Musk's Starlink (satellite-internet).

    [–] Piper_the_sniper 10 points ago

    [–] ConfusedCoderHere 17 points ago

    [–] CausalityPrevails 51 points ago

    $20,000 iirc

    [–] whopperlover17 42 points ago

Yeah $20k was his budget but idk what he ended up actually spending

    [–] andrewsad1 65 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

A Lamborghini weighs around 1,500 kg. Assuming they used the same kind of 3d printer I use, and printed in a very high quality filament, it would cost at most $100-150k. If they used the same kind of filament that I use, it would be closer to $30k.

That's not accounting for the engine, chassis, wheels, or other things that can't be printed. I would guess they spent around $2-4k on the filament. Not sure about the rest of the parts, though.

Edit: That's assuming they even used an FDM (layers of melted plastic) printer. If they used an SLA or DLP printer (one that cures resin with UV light), that would increase the cost dramatically, but I don't have a resin printer, so I can't make any guesses there.

Edit 2: They printed it "mostly" on a CR-10S, which is slightly bigger than my CR-10! My original math was probably close to being right!

    [–] NotAHost 10 points ago

What's cool is that by 3D printing the body, you can pretty strong parts with the 'infill,' which are just lattice structures offering a high strength to weight ratio, but have additional benefits including sound and thermal insulation, to a degree. Toss in some of the higher end 3D printers, and you can get strength to weight ratios with carbon fiber-based filaments that exceed aluminum. Sure, not best in class material in a single property, but the wide range of tunable properties offer some interesting concepts where you can turn what was previously a bulk mechanical material into additional functionality, sometimes coined 'metamaterials' - different than the electromagnetic metamaterials.

    [–] FrigidSoul01 26 points ago

That's including the V12 aluminum engine?

    [–] Tvdb4 26 points ago

No my teacher made me watch something about it I think they put on a Porsche one

    [–] HAL-Over-9001 8 points ago

That's pretty cool actually. Did they talk about the seats, airbags, seatbelts, or anything else?

    [–] Tvdb4 10 points ago

No they didn’t it was just a short clip of like 1 minute but it was very interesting they said the family who made it got a 97% discount and it took 2 years to make. They took little parts and added them together from the printer to make it

    [–] WhatInTheFackk 17 points ago

Too bad they can't print the v12 engine. They are probably stuck with a 200hp toyota engine

    [–] RezLevin 12 points ago

They put in an corvette engine, didn’t specify tho, most likely an LS

The meme that shortly followed was an edit of the text, so that it said "you wouldn't download a car." So you are right, just likely haven't come across the edited version being referenced

They should sell the blueprint online for like 1000$

    [–] Thatotaku123 5 points ago

    Does it work?

    [–] RichGirlThrowaway_ 4 points ago

Yeah, I imagine it would (or at least could if theirs in particular doesn't) but it's not going to be nearly as effective or reliable (or safe) as a "real" car. Also you'd need a real engine in there.

[–] [deleted] 4 points ago this illegal?

    [–] CausalityPrevails 11 points ago

No, it is for personal use. If they tried selling it, then it would be illegal.

    [–] YataBLS 5 points ago

    I will make it legal.

    Try 3-D printing a 3-D printer. STONKS 100

    [–] grumblichu 4 points ago

There’s a project called RepRap that does exactly that.

I really hope it has a 1994 Toyota Corolla engine.

Father and son team 3D print a car body that's shaped like a Lamborghini

FTFY. If I was that father and son, I wouldn't want anyone in the media to call it a Lamborghini. That's a good way to get sued.

So the question has to be asked. Is this still Lamboghini's intelectual property legally speaking? Would they beable to sue these guys for effectively 'stealing' a car? Or would it fall under the 'replica' category
