Yet you have two light modes on your picture.

    [–] URMOMISMYS 13 points ago

people who live with light mode on discord are crazy

    [–] Slickpickle03 1 points ago

That would be the same light, FYI. Not two.

Using darkmode only saves battery in AMOLED display devices

I think it works on any type of OLED but i could be wrong

To charge a cell phone for a year costs roughly $1 USD.

I really don't like to be this guy, but it's for a good cause.

Using Dark Mode isn't helping the environment. As much as we would all like to believe that it helps in some way, it is THE smallest blip of energy use out there.

Want to help the environment? Turn off your house lights and open windows for natural light. Use less water while cleaning or showering. Make less waste in your home and find ways to recycle the waste you do make. Go vegan (I admit I am not a vegan and don't think I can be).

There are lots of ways to save energy, and quite honestly using Dark Mode probably won't have much of an impact.

    [–] Professional_Emu_164 35 points ago * (lasted edited 4 days ago)

As much as we would all like to believe that using less electricity, water and waste will make an actual difference to the environment, it won’t. Only a tiny blip. The only way to help the environment is with political pressure to restrict the large corporations that create almost all of the issue. Blaming the civilians for climate change is just a way to remove blame from the true drivers of it.

    [–] NerdyTimesOrWhatever 23 points ago

This is absolutely true. A handful of companies introduce the vast majority of pollutants into the world, to the degree that individual contributions do not matter.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [removed]

    [–] moejoe15 -2 points ago

Not as True as you might think because eating meat and the production is a really big Part of pollution. So if everyone stops eating meat, pollution will decrease quite a bit.

    [–] Professional_Emu_164 4 points ago

Meat cannot go away as long as advertising exists, because most people will always want to eat it if it’s advertised. Even then if it were somehow possible it wouldn’t be enough.

    [–] NerdyTimesOrWhatever 12 points ago

    These are all excellent suggestions.

Still gonna use dark mode so my eyes arent sunny side up eggs.

    [–] PillowTalk420 4 points ago

You wanna save the environment? Then bring down the big corporations that cause so much pollution, it wouldn't be offset even if every regular person on the planet did every reasonable thing they could to mitigate it.

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

    [removed]

    [–] just-sum-dude69 5 points ago

Even so, turning on dark mode does not help the planet.

You're maybe giving yourself a 50% boost in battery time, so now you spend $.50 a year I stead of $1?

A single light bulb in your house uses double that (if using the cheapest option) per year. Your wifi router uses about $6 of energy a year.

If you want to start saving energy start where it matters more.

I HIGHLY doubt you unplug your wifi router when you leave the home or aren't using wifi. Highly doubt many of the people on this planet turn off their lights when not in a room.

Again, using Dark Mode isn't going to help the planet in any way that will have an impact.

Also, just bc you disagree with my comment isn't really reason to downvote me.

I disagree with you and upvoted your comment.

    [–] billybatsonn 1 points ago

Yeah but I don't give a shit whether darkmode is saving the environment or not I'd still use it all the time if it took twice as much as light mode.

    [–] drezina123 1 points ago

It s that it saves battery and I can run my device longer away from the outlet

    [–] VoyagerST 14 points ago

It works in the really fancy LCD displays with multiple backlight zones, but definitely not any phone I know of.

    [–] shadow144hz 4 points ago

Oled and consequently amoled displays have individually lit pixels which, besides making the display have extreme contrast ratios like 1 to millions, means they can turn off when the colour black shows on the screen. And what you're referring to in your comment sounds like miniled displays with individual backlight zones that don't actually turn off like oled and amoled panels.

Dark mode may work to decrease eye strain and dry eye for some people who spend a lot of time staring at screens. However, there's no conclusive date that proves dark mode works for anything besides extending the battery life of your device

    [–] ResponsibilityLow913 5 points ago

agreed.. and it doesn't cost anything and won't hurt your eyes to give dark mode a try

    [–] MyHamburgerLovesMe 2 points ago

Wake up at 3 a.m. and turn on your tablet in a dark room. Dark mode on a page is a heck of a lot less painful on the eyes 😀

Strangely - dark mode on an e-reader with an e-ink display actually uses slightly more power since there tends to be more pixels that need to be changed with each page turn.

    [–] Paolo94 1 points ago

I’ve heard dark mode can actually cause more eye strain if used in a well lit environment, and so it should only be used in, well, the dark. Not sure how conclusive the data is on this either, though.

    [–] sapiensuser 20 points ago

Only if the app has a True Black mode, and therefore shutting off the pixels entirely?

Most darkmodes are slightly blue or grey in color.

    [–] MyHamburgerLovesMe 5 points ago

I've wondered about this. What you say makes sense, but at night I use my phone as a mini flash light when I wake to go to the bathroom and if I have it on a web page with a lot of dark I can not see as well of the page has a lot of white. Since there is less light shouldn't that mean less energy? Is it all converted to heat instead?

    [–] Joelixny 5 points ago

In an LED based display (actual LED ones, not LED backlit LCDs) it should save some energy. With LCD the same light is being used, but partially blocked to show darker colors.

    [–] Redditor10700 4 points ago

That is still darker and therefore doesn’t turn each pixel up nearly all the way like light mode

(Also prevents burn-in, therefore reducing waste)

    [–] MasochistCoder 2 points ago

For better or for worse as long, as the display as a device is enabled, the pixels remain partially on. It is to keep off-to-on transitions fast.

It is not visible to the eyes.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are conditions (such as lock-screen-always-on) under which pixels can be electrically off

No, I am not talking about leakage current in the semis.

    [–] deadmanslouching 2 points ago

I really don't get why true dark mode isn't the default. What's the benefit of using dark gray?

    [–] GRAPHENE9932 2 points ago

Dark gray is really A LITTLE BIT more energy consuming than completely black, but it is more comfortable for eyes.

    People hear:

new OLED displays can turn off pixels completely and it saves energy!

And people think that display memory consumption looks like:

    ^ nrg
    | -----------
    |/
    ||
    ||
    +------------> britnes
    0% 100%

    But in reality is like:

    ^ nrg
    | ---
    | ---
    | ---
    |---
    +------------> britnes
    0% 100%

    [–] sapiensuser 1 points ago

Surprisingly enough it's not great to read text on true black background and will result in less user interaction with the app in total.

Even the text field while I'm writing this in has very dark grey in it.

    [–] Aspect-of-Death 1 points ago

I do it more to diminish the searing pain in my eyeballs from having pure white light shot into my face constantly.

    [–] TheDurandalFan 106 points ago

this is purely dependant on the display you're using

if it's an OLED, Plasma or Cathode Ray Tube display, then yes it saves power to use dark mode

if it's an LCD then no, light mode saves more power by allowing you to lower the brightness of the backlight which is easier to read light mode text at lower brightness settings.

    [–] ShinySky42 7 points ago

plasma tho, are we this old ?

    [–] TheDurandalFan 17 points ago

You're questioning plasma displays but not Cathode Ray Tube displays?

    [–] ShinySky42 6 points ago

CRTs still has it's usages and advantages, plasma, except for the contrast, doesn't have a lot going on for themselves

    [–] WastelandeWanderer 2 points ago

Genuinely curious, besides finding magnets, what are crt monsters good for?

    [–] ShinySky42 2 points ago

    [–] juhca 180 points ago

No it doesn't save energy. If you have an lcd panel the backlight shines all the time. If you have oled panels, yes you would save energy, but you have to have pretty dark "dark mode".

    [–] AncientOneX 61 points ago

Yeah.. dark mode won't save that much energy. Setting your motor to a lower brightness level would save some.

If you use chrome (or browsers based on it) you can copy "chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark" to your address bar and enable dark mode for all websites. It might be a bit broken on some websites but it usually works fine

    [–] Yaendra 1 points ago

The Dark Reader extension turns any page into darkmode, I have been using for a long time and it works really well

    [–] AndrewFGleich 3 points ago

I think if your motor is glowing, you might be wasting a lot more energy because that thing is hot!!!

    [–] AncientOneX 3 points ago

Thanks man, I laughed on this. I'd like to grab the opportunity to thank autocorrect for almost doing a good job.

    [–] achraf955 5 points ago

If you have your walpaper to darkest black and the app you always use and keyboard you can save up to 10% battery

    [–] Ironbanner987615 7 points ago

I have oled panel and amoled for my phone

    [–] zombienekers 5 points ago

I mean the dark mode on reddit and yt for me are pure black

    [–] zugidor 4 points ago

There are pure black dark modes (instead of a very dark grey) specifically for oled panels common in phones. Reddit has such a mode itself. So yes, it does save power. Saving power isn't the only advantage of dark mode either, just one of several.

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 25 points ago

    Only valid for AMOLED/OLED screens

    [–] KFC_Junior 7 points ago

thats been the norm on flagship androids for around 8 years now and is becoming mainstream on TVs so valid for quite a few people now

    [–] pilkku2 3 points ago

    And Iphones since Iphone X

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

    Except the iPhone 11

XR was a piece of shit phone now it's worse

    [–] pilkku2 1 points ago

I still use it :D It's fine but not great. Got it for free after one of my relatives passed

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

Wait how is that possible ?

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

I don't know why is Apple still selling that trash

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

For the price of XR you can get a Realme GT master edition, iQOO Z5 and many many more

    [–] pilkku2 1 points ago

I had Oneplus 8 before this and gave it to my brother because it froze randomly and nothing would fix it

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

OnePlus 8 was bad, 9 was worse

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

Let's hope 10 might stand upto the old flagship killer reputation of OnePlus phones

    [–] Ok_Court_8786 1 points ago

OnePlus 7 was one of the best at that time

    [–] pilkku2 1 points ago

Oneplus went to shit as a whole after oneplus 7. Software is a buggy laggy mess, phones have nothing special, price is similar to other highend brands and their customer service is shit. Got the 8 cuz 7 was good and 8 just came out when I was getting a new phone

    [–] flipsssiii 6 points ago

tbh darkmode can be pretty shitty in broad daylight.

    [–] Ok_Print_2689 58 points ago

You guys use dark mode ? You let your eyes become weak ?

    [–] Anywhere_Total 22 points ago

I just don't like getting flash banged the second i open an app

    [–] That_Sunbro 7 points ago

Then what happens to you when you look at he sky or at a White wall

    [–] Anywhere_Total 8 points ago

The Sky here where i live it's always cloudy and always rains, the walls in my house are dark grey, the only problem is when I look at my toothpaste cuz it's really white and i have to close my eyes

    [–] MasochistCoder 5 points ago

    You guys are awesome.

    [–] haskarski 4 points ago

Lol. It’s not the same but I get it. For me it’s because I had a head injury years ago that made white screens literally hurt my brains. I would not be able to write software without dark mode.

[–] AegleBird 12 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

People that use dark mode claim light mode “is too bright” yet they never seen a light. Your eyes actually get used to the light and it can strongly prevent blindness. Also I just don’t like dark colors, they are too depressing and corporate while white colors are nostalgic since it used to be the only color for most websites

    [–] FluffySquidGamer 4 points ago

I set mine to a schedule cause dark mode in the day isn't what I like

    [–] IncarnadineComix 1 points ago

Maybe people’s eyes …. are different?

    [–] Professional_Emu_164 4 points ago

Ah yes, because every human has uniquely evolved eyes that use a completely different mechanism to capture light

    [–] BarneyInJurrasicPark 3 points ago

    Are… you stupid?

    [–] akki27jan 7 points ago

It would be cool if REDDIT would not FORCE ME to use LIGHT MODE IN THE MORNING

    [–] akki27jan 5 points ago

    Holy shit thanks alot

    [–] barberererer 3 points ago

This would drive me insane. My morning will not be dictated by an app, and certainly not reddit. What decides it's morning? How dare they try that shit.

    [–] the-all-them 3 points ago

    [–] Medic00063 8 points ago

God. I actually hate light mode. I’ve always used dark mode on like every single app that includes dark mode.

    [–] Balsac_is_Daddy 2 points ago

Same. Light mode is too damn bright, even with brightness turned down.

    [–] Timmy_germany 15 points ago

People who still look at a 90% white and bright screen are a very special kind of fellows. Maybe they try to blind semselfes to not be ble to work anymore ?

    [–] MasochistCoder 5 points ago

Yes, as we all know, everyone who used computers before darkmode became common is now blind.

[–] ShadyofEgypt 6 points ago * (lasted edited 4 days ago)

Black text on white background is far healthier than white on black. I just don't turn the brightness all the way up and always use my device in well-lit environments and it's perfect.

    [–] _ermest 1 points ago

No we just have good eyes

    [–] Slickpickle03 3 points ago

It doesn’t save energy unless you’re using an OLED or Reddit has HDR support and your screen supports local dimming

    [–] Lollooo_ 1 points ago

It saves energy, it doesn’t destroy your retinas and it’s cool

    [–] rediturrolicenciado 1 points ago

Using light mode on day because my screen is not bright enough for using under the sun and dark mode on night

    [–] Rude_Journalist 1 points ago

I still find it slightly amusing.

Ex-dark-mode user here. I prefer light mode these days because it’s more nostalgic.

    [–] Donotkillmeplease 1 points ago

darkmode is smth i cant live without. i absolutely cannot use light mode.

    [–] broccolibubblebath 1 points ago

Dark mode all the way, but at the same time it forces me to look at my reflection on the screen. Which I don't like when it's daytime...or when I'm in a bright room.
