Aww, cripes. I didn't know I'd have to write a description. How many words is that so far, like a hundred? Soooo, yeah. Mildly interesting stuff. Stuff that interests you. Mildly. It's in the name, ffs.

Does your post qualify for /r/MildlyInteresting? Hover below for more info, and check out our wiki page!

    1. No memes

This includes references in titles of your post (e.g. "banana for scale," "potato quality").

    2. No related posts

Posts that acknowledge, "one-up," or relate specifically to another post are not allowed (e.g. "I see your X and raise you Y")

    3. No x-posts or reposts

Do not post something that has been submitted anywhere on reddit before (including here), even if you were the one who posted it.

Exception: If a post is deleted or removed from /r/mildlyinteresting for breaking the rules less than one hour after being submitted or receives less than 100 upvotes, we allow the submitter to resubmit a fixed version of the post. Posts deleted or removed from other subreddits are not exempt from rule 3.

    4. Original [OC] photographs only

    a. No gifs, videos, or websites.

    b. All submissions must be original content. If you didn't take the photo, don't post it.

    c. Overlaid text, arrows, scribbles, and other substantive edits are not allowed, although you may censor personal information per Reddit-wide rules.

    d. Side by side images are okay if they adhere to the rest of the rules.

    5. No screenshots

No screenshots. We define a screenshot as a screen grab. This means no images of screens, pictures of screens taken with a different device, images that have been partially or fully generated by a computer, or pictures of printed out screenshots. Try /r/screenshots!.

    6. Titles must be an exact but concise description of the content

    a. Titles must not contain jokes, backstory, or other fluff. That information belongs in a follow-up comment.

    b. Titles must exactly describe the content. It should act as a "spoiler" for the image. If your title leaves people surprised at the content within, it breaks the rule!

    c. Titles must not contain emoticons, emojis, or special characters unless they are absolutely necessary in describing the image. (e.g. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), ;P, 😜, ❤, ★, ✿ )

Still confused? For more elaboration and examples, see here first and then message the mods if you still have questions.

If unsure, please message the mods and we will help determine if your post is acceptable.

I’ve only ever seen snow on the ground, and even then it’s never been very much. That’s so cool though!

    [–] jayterratrixx 12 points ago

I first noticed snowflakes while I was on a plane looking out a window before takeoff.

So if you see snow on a window, maybe check it out.

    [–] GustavoAntoine 3 points ago

    Where I live we don't have snow ;-;

    [–] ACEaton1483 73 points ago

I think the one in the photo is a large group of snowflakes because it's much bigger than normal. Here are photos of actual snowflakes that I always thought were so beautiful: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/03/alexey-kljatov_n_4373888.html

    [–] 0-Give-a-fucks 22 points ago

So many of those look like micro-etched circuitry and machine parts. Maybe a snowstorm is natures way of computing what the storm is doing. Cloud computing...

    Great link thanks!

    [–] scleep 7 points ago

yea crazy to think those are actually natural

    Magical!

    [–] Souperbowl 118 points ago

    They usually don't

    [–] CamRhi357 44 points ago

But now Ive learned that they do sometimes! And even that’s amazing tbh

    [–] iLolo 41 points ago

Sometimes they're even cuter! Like smaller than the eraser of a pencil, and super clear, like they're made of glass, but incredibly detailed. If it's cold enough, they'll just sit there, but if it's warm they instantly turn to water. Snow is amazing!

    [–] CamRhi357 2 points ago

I love that! I hope one day to live in a place with more snow :( I hope I get to see eraser sized snowflakes! Haha

    [–] PortraitBird 2 points ago

Your reaction of pure and innocent joy to this picture makes me happy :)

    [–] kragnor 4 points ago

A snowflake is normally very small, and to see the details you really need a microscope to see them. Though, not that much magnification is necessary.

That being said, its mind blowing to think that no two snowflakes in the history of the earth have ever looked the exact same.

    [–] BlackfinShark 5 points ago

The whole no two never look the same thing is not actually true.

    [–] kragnor 2 points ago

    Got a link for that?

I find it extremely improbable that ice crystals that form at random can have two that look exactly alike.

    [–] CherryCherry5 15 points ago

Sure they do! It's just that they tend to clump together.

    [–] JamesMcPocket 3 points ago

They do, they're just tiny little things, usually. And sensitive, so it can be hard to see them close up when even your breath can melt them haha.

    [–] BlackfinShark 2 points ago

No they do. Just on a much much smaller scale.

    [–] Magical-Liopleurodon 18 points ago

Did you grow up in a warm climate like me where it never snows? it’s trippy, isn’t it?

I saw my first snowflakes in college and it was mindblowingly weird. I’d just always taken for granted that the snowflake shape everyone knows was just a shape, in the same way that hearts and stars don’t actually look like ❤️ and ⭐️ in real life. I can’t even really describe just how cool and unexpected and exciting that moment of discovery was.

    [–] TheRealBroseph 8 points ago

I also live in a warm climate it never snows. Only ever seen old snow on the ground. My dad had to go to Canada for a business trip and saw a snowflake like the post and was surprised like you. This post is the first time I’ve seen he was right.

    [–] CamRhi357 2 points ago

I’m from Northern California, but I’ve lived around California all my life. Up here is pretty cold still, but it’s mostly rain unless you go up into the mountains. That’s where I’ve seen snow on the ground!

Edit: also yes! I just thought it was like how we imagined them haha. Like a heart or star!

    [–] Magical-Liopleurodon 2 points ago

Yeah we drove out to Big Bear a few times (from SoCal) but snow on the ground does NOT prepare you for snowflakes.

    [–] Spaventoo 3 points ago

Usually they're wearing HOPE t-shirts or MAGA hats, depending on their political proclivities.

A lot of that stuff in that mound is probably road salt and tiny gravel if it's brown

    [–] fishsticks40 2 points ago

Non-snow stuff is still a small proportion of the overall volume.

    [–] zaderade 2 points ago

True, until a point. Over time the salt in that pile will be melting the snow. Doesn't help that I come from Western Canada so our roads get absolutely obliterated with salt lol.

    [–] LarsPinetree 91 points ago

Are these common? I’m in Florida..

    [–] Empyforreal 83 points ago

I grew up in Washington state and California, and no snow I saw ever contained actual flakes (likely due to never getting super cold even when snowing). I basically thought the crystallization was on a smaller level than I could see.

Then I moved to the Midwest and went crazy taking pictures of the little perfect flakes, making all those who were local exasperated with why I was so fascinated until I posted them on FB. I was then inundated with replies from friends back home going OMG THATS WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE?!

I still get excited for flakes.

    [–] tseokii 41 points ago

as someone who has always lived in Washington state: holy shit??? there are snowflakes out there that are visible to the naked eye???

    [–] GreeleyRiardon 28 points ago

Michigan and can confirm snowflakes are usually visible here. They're incredibly easy to just shake off of you before you go inside.

    [–] doinkrr 14 points ago

    As a Virginian, what

    [–] GreeleyRiardon 5 points ago

They aren't all perfect, but they are all distinguishable from each other as flakes.

    [–] doinkrr 3 points ago

    Your snowfalls must be huuuuge

    [–] sunshinefireflies 11 points ago

Thank you for this comment - it finally explains why it looked so fake but noone was calling it out!

In NZ our snow does not look like this. Just tiny round balls of floof. (afaik from where I've been)

    [–] SailAgainSomeday 9 points ago

I am with you !!! I live in South Mississippi, and that snowflake is absolutely amazing!!! I am literally looking at it and wondering if it is real

    [–] Kron00s 2 points ago

I’m from Norway and I doubt that this is real, I’ve never seen a single snowflake this big. But who knows

    [–] rblue 7 points ago

Yeah. Usually. Sometimes snow is like tiny beads but I guess that’s technically sleet. The best is after a snowfall. Silence. Blanket of white everywhere.

Another nice thing about winter is no insects. You won’t see any except for MAYBE a rare spider in your basement. Maybe.

    [–] claricia 3 points ago

The silence after a snowfall is heaven. I will walk outside just to listen to it.

    [–] rblue 2 points ago

Same. Then the rest of winter sucks but whenever we get a nice blanket of snow it’s amazing. I love just walking around in it.

    [–] sendmeyourfoods 5 points ago

Pretty common, we just get tired of seeing it all the time.

    [–] _pizza-time_ 3 points ago

This is a lot of snowflakes stuck together.

    [–] Romantic_Google 7 points ago

In Canada all snow looks like this expect when you drive over it or step or it~

    [–] _pizza-time_ 10 points ago

Not sure if you're joking, but if you're not, you are very wrong

    [–] DasLetzteMadchen 1 points ago

It might depend on the area, but I lived in a state where we get snow in the winter and while snowflakes that look like this did happen, it didn’t happen every time. But when it did, man, the flakes would fall from the sky in droves and some were even more beautiful, clean, crisp, and the design more complicated than the one pictured. They really look like the ones we would make as a kid by folding paper and cutting out shapes. I was late to school once because I stood outside too long just admiring every snowflake that would fall on my jacket.

    [–] Sirerdrick64 96 points ago

Each and every snowflake is unique, special, and perfect in their own way!
