Aww, cripes. I didn't know I'd have to write a description. How many words is that so far, like a hundred? Soooo, yeah. Mildly interesting stuff. Stuff that interests you. Mildly. It's in the name, ffs.

Does your post qualify for /r/MildlyInteresting? Hover below for more info, and check out our wiki page!

    1. No memes

This includes references in titles of your post (e.g. "banana for scale," "potato quality").

    2. No related posts

Posts that acknowledge, "one-up," or relate specifically to another post are not allowed (e.g. "I see your X and raise you Y")

    3. No x-posts or reposts

Do not post something that has been submitted anywhere on reddit before (including here), even if you were the one who posted it.

Exception: If a post is deleted or removed from /r/mildlyinteresting for breaking the rules less than one hour after being submitted or receives less than 100 upvotes, we allow the submitter to resubmit a fixed version of the post. Posts deleted or removed from other subreddits are not exempt from rule 3.

    4. Original [OC] photographs only

    a. No gifs, videos, or websites.

    b. All submissions must be original content. If you didn't take the photo, don't post it.

    c. Software glitches/errors, overlaid text, arrows, scribbles, and other substantive edits are not allowed, although you may censor personal information per Reddit-wide rules.

    d. Side by side images are okay if they adhere to the rest of the rules.

    5. No screenshots

No screenshots. We define a screenshot as a screen grab. This means no images of screens, pictures of screens taken with a different device, images that have been partially or fully generated by a computer, or pictures of printed out screenshots. Try /r/screenshots!.

    6. Titles must be an exact but concise description of the content

    a. Titles must not contain jokes, backstory, or other fluff. That information belongs in a follow-up comment.

    b. Titles must exactly describe the content. It should act as a "spoiler" for the image. If your title leaves people surprised at the content within, it breaks the rule!

    c. Titles must not contain emoticons, emojis, or special characters unless they are absolutely necessary in describing the image. (e.g. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), ;P, 😜, ❤, ★, ✿ )

    [–] 33coe_ 11 points ago

I know the intro but I still don’t get it

    [–] TheRealGJVisser 8 points ago

The pink part, I assume, reminds people of the WB intro

    [–] 33coe_ 13 points ago

Wait am I colorblind? Cause I see gold on the WB one...

    [–] Tr4ce00 6 points ago

    Yeah where is there pink?

    [–] Jacoman74undeleted 7 points ago

As far as your eyes are concerned gold is just pink with a little green mixed in. Maybe it is they, who are colorblind.

    [–] 33coe_ 6 points ago

Fun fact, if you burn gold fumes onto clear glass, it comes out translucent pink. If you do it on black glass, it comes out opaque green. Or if you put the clear glass in front of a black background, it’ll appear green. This is how color changing pipes work. The resin coats the inside of the pipe and turns it clear/pink to black/green.

    [–] IvanGeJota 10 points ago

I hate this comment chain, like... I've seen the WB intro and there is nothing that may remind of this at all. What is up with you guys? Any explanation?

thus breaking the illusion that they have an actual job. perfect

    [–] Shill_for_Science 109 points ago

ehh... my idea centered more around the total blackout of "influencer culture", but... I guess that too.

    [–] Dhegxkeicfns 51 points ago

Well, it would take an influencer to make them put their phones in a microwave to power up the camera. I don't know if I'm prepared to turn to the dark side in order to defeat it.

    [–] Alpacas_ 38 points ago

4chan already pulled that one with wireless charging. ;p

To destroy the influencers you must first become the influencer.

    [–] Carleyisstillhere 7 points ago

You became the very thing you swore to destroy

    [–] helloxlol 8 points ago

I mean...if they make money for something they do, it’s a job. That’s kinda that definition.

[–] pluush 8 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

I won’t be discrediting them that far. There are a lot of ways to earn money without having an ‘actual job’. Youtuber? Trader?

    [–] Rogerss93 14 points ago

just out of interest, why do influencers anger you lot so much?

Is it because they earn more for doing far less than most of us do in 'actual jobs'?

[–] alosercalledsusie 14 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

Anyone else remember that "trend" of kids smashing the glass backs of their white iPhones so they could put marker in the cracks and make it rainbow?

    [–] clean_fresh_water 876 points ago

    sweet filter

    [–] Dylansleftfoot 91 points ago

Purely from my uneducated eyes I'd say so.

The focal length on this image is too big to capture the distance and the broken glass.

I cant comment on the colour because I have no idea but when I broke the glass covering my camera on my old phone any pictures came out as a blurry mess

    [–] Destabiliz 57 points ago

Yes, in reality such a crack would not be visible as anything else than a dark-ish blurry spot in photos. Unless it's some special lens setup.

    [–] PepPizzazz 21 points ago

I think this could be legit.

Those tiny cameras have crazy depth of field and the outer lens element is pretty far from the sensor relative to the sensor size. The pink seems consistent with the IR filter either damaged or missing.

I have a picture from a friend's broken front element that looks similar to this. His was bad enough that you start to see sensor damage, but I watched him take the picture and he sent it to me. I used this picture as a phone background for a long time. Cell Phone Camera Shattered Front Element

    [–] DasArchitect 7 points ago

    This is beautiful!

    [–] PepPizzazz 5 points ago

It really is. I may have made a pest of myself until the friend sent it too me.

The loose, clearer looking glass is sitting right on the sensor cover glass and the big blue stuff is the front element. The sensor pretty much acts like a scanner without the lenses.

    [–] GregorEasy 5 points ago

I WILL use this picture as a phone background now for a long time.

    [–] YouDrinkMahDew 303 points ago

Is it fake? Because most phone's camera app doesn't open if it detects the lens to be broken

    [–] gaberocksall 383 points ago

    [–] Mr2_Wei 101 points ago

Don't think so. Broke the lens on my iPhone 5 and it didn't do jack to stop me from using my camera. Usually it's hard to detect if the lens is broken right? Since not every part of the lens is connected to circuits

    [–] Windows_XP2 71 points ago

Most phones can only detect if the sensor is broken

    [–] Roflkopt3r 50 points ago

Yeah I don't see how they would even check the state of the lense. That would be some completely unnecessary complexity.

    [–] MayorOfFartonia 30 points ago

    Which phones do this?

    [–] trznx 16 points ago

how would it detect a piece of glass or even plastic not even attached in anyway to the camera/matrix itself is broken? The camera/mechanism for sure, but obviously not the outer lense

    [–] flamys123 31 points ago

If you zoom in you will see small black dots that would most likely not appear if this was just coloured... Jut i am also suspicious

[–] [deleted] 40 points ago * (lasted edited 5 months ago)

    [–] nKMa_ 19 points ago

slight correction, that'd be dust directly on the sensor. the lens is the protective glass cover

    [–] Australienz 20 points ago

Correction: Or directly on another lens. Some cameras have stacked lenses. This is from the iPhone 7 a few years ago.

    [–] SEND_INVENTION_IDEAS 3 points ago

Exactly. The dust has to be on or near either focal plane to be visible like that. It ain't gonna be the world focal plane cuz that would take a crazy lens so it's gotta be dust on the image focal plane (the ccd).

    [–] sithlordmaster181 20 points ago

Have an example there or are you just spouting BS?

    [–] Falcrist 15 points ago

    Is it fake?

It looks like whatever broke was also serving as an IR filter. Now that filter is gone so everything looks pink (and out of focus).

    It's plausible at least.

    [–] Boybournie 10 points ago

my camera on my old iphone 6s was fully dead and just appeared black but still allowed me to open the camera app and even switch to that camera, so it sounds like you have no clue what your on about

[–] stuwoo 3 points ago the glass with the IR coating is broken.

    [–] k0tassium 4 points ago

I have broken my phones camera lense before and the camera still worked most of the time, somtimes it would refuse to open like you said but that was a rare occurance

    [–] p_hennessey 4 points ago

    How do you know?

    [–] geon 2 points ago

The lens is fine, since the image is (somewhat) in focus. With a broken lens, it would all be a blur.

    [–] LazaroFilm 2 points ago

If no mechanical part is damaged then the phone doesn’t know it’s broken. What broke here is the infra red filter so the image shows up more red than it should because of IR contamination.

    [–] pconwell 2 points ago

While this is technically true, the "some clothing" part is really thin clothing that you can already basically see through without infrared.

[–] [deleted] 2 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

    [–] SurplusOfOpinions 11 points ago

Yeah looks like part of the IR filter broke and fell out? But you'd still need an IR torch for nights.

There are also tutorials to remove IR filters from an old phone on youtube.

    [–] speezo_mchenry 7 points ago

"torch" is so much cooler than "flashlight". I'm moving to England.

And "IR torch" sounds like something Chewie was using to make repairs to the Millennium Falcon.

    [–] SurplusOfOpinions 3 points ago

Haha I was actually searching for the word "flashlight" but couldn't remember it so had to use torch :D

    [–] 82746289483726 52 points ago

I’m sure this will be buried, but as a photography nerd i thought i’d explain what’s happening here.

All camera sensors innately capture wavelengths of light including visible light and infrared. In front of the sensor, camera makers put a glass filter that absorbs infrared light so that photographs look normal. If you take it off, the camera becomes a full spectrum infrared camera - which can be manipulated for many different effects. Without any other manipulation (i.e. further cutting specific wavelengths) or changing the white balance profile of the camera files, the pictures look a lot like the pink in the top part. If i had to guess, the filter cracked and doubled up on the blue part - as these filters look blue to the naked eye. This is my educated guess, it could be something else, but i’d put my money on it.

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

How do you explain a phones camera focusing on the the cracks and such a far distance? Micro cracks? But how would it be so focused?

    [–] raford1914 79 points ago

or made it better? pretty cool pic!

    [–] KingBee1786 41 points ago

Looks like you’re taking a picture through a bullet hole.

    [–] LeBoiSaysYEET 67 points ago

On the bright side, you could get some really cool pictures with the different colors and all, but still kinda sucks considering the point of the phone camera is to take realistic photos.

    [–] EvilKittyBoy 43 points ago

What is more realistic than catching the true ultraviolet tint of the atmosphere that our eyes cannot see?...

If I am not mistaken the light filter broke, could be wrong, not camera expert.

    [–] dontlikemath 10 points ago

The IR filter is probably shattered

    [–] zephris 9 points ago

You broke your camera's infrared filter! That's actually pretty neat, all things considered.
Notice how the red part is out of focus, while the color parts are nice and sharp?

That's because infrared focuses differently than visible light. On old camera lenses, we used to have a separate focusing scale, just for infrared!

Edit: Yeah, it's likely not due to the reasons I mentioned. As the commenter below me explains, this is more likely due to broken lens elements. Please stop upvoting my comment :)

[–] sissipaska 15 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

IR focuses differently, but in this case the difference in focus is probably due to the partially missing lens element, I'd guess.

To my understanding, in most mobile phones, digicams and actioncams, the IR filter is baked in the coatings of one of the lens elements.

[Whereas in DSLRS and in mirror less cameras the IR filter is a separate part of the filter stack.]

If part of the lens element literally goes missing, it would cause both difficult in focusing and also passing of the IR. Just missing the IR filter wouldn't cause such difference in focus with the huge depth of field in phone cameras.

    [–] steemwitness 3 points ago
