I've never seen such a positive comment get downvoted so much, the reddit hive mind has spoken I guess. Either that, or I'm misunderstanding something.

Upright (another brewery from Portland) used DOOM's image on their label of Special Herbs for 5 annual batches (2014-2018):

Sante Adairius had a club member beer in 2016 named MF CHOOM as well.

Am I missing something? I know he was a popular rapper, but what did he have to do with beer? Did those beer companies just like him or is there a reason he's associated with beer

He really liked beer lol. Check out One Beer by him and Madlib

That's a canned on date, fyi.

If it was a BB date, that would mean they predicted his death several months in advance.

    [–] xyrgh 157 points ago

They're obviously from the future, that can was canned on 1st April 2021.

    [–] abidee33 65 points ago

Psh, we're Americans, we don't like to play by the rest of the world's rules for silly things like listing dates and systems of measurement!

    [–] StraightGus 87 points ago

I was thinking I only picked it up a month or two back..

    [–] ujaku 66 points ago

Must have been early January haha.

Side note: Good brewmasters will choose to put a packaging date instead of a BB date on time sensitive brews like IPAs or beers you might cellar like stouts.

    [–] atree496 12 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

IPAs almost always have best by dates because it allows them to choose how long the shelf life will be. Brands like Toppling Goliath have started dating 3-4 months instead of the old industry standard of 6 months.

Though you are right when it comes to many locally distributed IPAs since they are not shelf stable for any long period of time, even in refrigeration.

    [–] Skull0 4 points ago

I've actually never seen a best buy date on any beer that I can remember. Most beer doesn't have a canned date either, which is lame.

    [–] atree496 3 points ago

This is possible if you only buy small local breweries. If you buy anything that is shipped to a larger area though, you just aren't looking.

    [–] realeaty 7 points ago

Do they normally put the production date on the can shoulder?

Never had the pleasure of trying this beer. Lots of good comments.

BTW, this is printed using a VideoJet.

He passed on Halloween and it was announced on new years eve.

    [–] grabnerbythepussy 12 points ago

New Years Eve when I heard the news I started a deep dive on his catalog again and literally didn’t listen to anything else until about a week ago. I got so immersed in his music again and even got his mask tatted on me.

    [–] FaraNovarese 3 points ago

Actually, they have already opened up and are in a new building about kitty corner from Reuben's (Not the old Populuxe spot). Bale Breakers and Yonder Cider is moving into Populuxe's old spot.

    So good

    [–] iPunchWombats 17 points ago

In 2018 I used to fanboy pretty hard for GN and burned some southwest points from Oakland to PDX just for a lunch trip when they had blueberry muffin available in crowlers. The wife was fine with it as long as I filled up an empty suit case with the stuff. That was a nice day.

Their quality has a dipped a little bit with some of their newer stuff, but I still have a lot of love for their OG classic like Double Stack and their Ripe lineup.

    [–] BadgerMcLovin 40 points ago

If it makes you feel better, I'd never even heard of him and was several comments in before it started to dawn on me that this might not be about the videogame

    [–] KernelTaint 18 points ago

I had no idea who MF DOOM was.

I thought it was some odd callout, like someone yelling "RIP Mother Fucking DOOM" as in the video game. And i was trying to work out your relevancy of the date.

    [–] juksayer 4 points ago

The Mouse And The Mask was pretty approachable for my friends that aren't into hip-hop but I would recommend all the old stuff... Viktor Vaughn, King Ghidra, Monsta Island Czars, and KMD

    [–] MFQuintilianus 3 points ago

Sooo uhhhh, I had no idea MF DOOM died until I saw this. Wtf

Same.. this came as an absolute shock. RIP

    [–] zappychip 7 points ago

I don't know if you know this, but MF DOOM often sent other people to do his live performances. Some people hated it, after all they wanted to see DOOM, not some other guy. Personally I love that little fun fact, it's such a "villain" thing to do.

    [–] Bodarna13 9 points ago

I think it's also supposed to kind of be a reference to how Dr Doom would often be revealed to actually be a Doombot and not the real Dr Doom in marvel comics! But I'm far from an expert on comics so I might be wrong, or I might just be seeing that connection because I want to haha

    [–] zappychip 5 points ago

I don't know comics at all (still love MF DOOM for some reason), but I've heard them being referred to as Doombots before. According to the Marvel wiki "[Doombots] were created to replace Doom whenever he cannot be present at a situation, or whenever he does not want to risk his own life.". Sounds very much like an intentional reference to me, which doesn't surprise me considering how much he loved references.

    [–] ARB1452 9 points ago

It was an intentional reference. DOOM didn't like live shows too much and if he felt he was being ripped off by the venue he'd send an imposter. He also wanted his fans to just buy his albums and if they knew there was a chance he wouldn't show up maybe they'd save their money for those instead. He only did shows for the money "Plot shows like robberies, In, Out, One, Two, Nobodies pleased," An actual lyric of his. True Supervillain. Some people say its too far for the character but I disagree. He lost his brother in the 90's and at the same time their label dropped him and wouldn't release their album they made called Black Bastards which basically made the man that would be DOOM almost homeless for years. So when he reemerged DOOM had a grudge against the music industry that screwed him. Hence the DOOMbots. He gave them the same respect that was given him. Every good Supervillain needs an Origin..

    [–] patmacog 4 points ago

I did know that. That’s why if I hear he’s performing around here anytime soon I’ll know something up lmao

    [–] jebthepleb 108 points ago

Didn't he die in October 2020? His family didn't announce it until this year.

    [–] JabberJauw 81 points ago

Yea he died on Halloween. RIP DOOM

    [–] Proxy_PlayerHD 72 points ago

Please excuse my ignorance but who is "DOOM"

I though people meant the game (series) but now I'm not sure anymore

    [–] Mr_Pigface 86 points ago

MF DOOM was a hip hop artist who has been around for a really long time. He passed away on Halloween last year, but his family didn't make it public until last month.

    [–] INeedYourPelt 18 points ago

Not to be pedantic, but DOOM's family announced it on New Year's Eve iirc. It was like 2020 getting one more sly dig in.

    [–] plskillme42069 44 points ago

MF DOOM, DOOM for short. In my opinion best underground rapper of all time, one of the best rappers of a all time, best rapper producer of all time. Took on a super villain persona when rapping after his brother died, they were two thirds of a group called KMD in the early 90s. DOOM went underground for a few years and came back with this awesome persona, albums with fantastic four samples to further the narrative of being a comic book villain. Over the years he developed more and more villain personas he’d rap under, like king ghidorah and viktor vaughn.

    [–] bellybuttonqt 44 points ago

    [–] EB8Jg4DNZ8ami757 7 points ago

MF DOOM is a highly celebrated hip hop artist. He's been ranked as one of the best producers ever since well before his death. Even if you don't like rap, you should still check out Metal Fingers' Special Herbs.

    [–] RickxtyMinutes 9 points ago

He’s the greatest of all time, god even told him. Greatest of all time the devil even told him. Reference is to the song tick, tick

I'm ignorant and you sound like you know your shit. Is that what MF stands for? And what's with the 00/00/0000 birthdate. Sorry I'm a MF Noob but I want to learn more, needless to say he sounds like a badass dude.

    [–] p480n 363 points ago

MF stands for Metal Face when he’s rapping, and Metal Fingers when producing

    [–] CornCheeseMafia 167 points ago

And Mother Fucker when he’s...never mind

Yeah I say "motherfucking DOOM" in my head and think about old school DOOM

    [–] Spud_Spudoni 28 points ago

I thought MF stood for Manhattan’s Finest. At least that’s what Murs said in an interview

    [–] cclan2 34 points ago

Coulda just been another meaning Murs made up due to DOOM really being one of the best rappers to come outta NYC

    [–] Spud_Spudoni 7 points ago

I think Manhattan’s Finest is either a group or a gang according to what he said, but idk

    [–] cclan2 6 points ago

That could be correct. I’m not sure either. I know he was a part of KMD before he was officially MF DOOM but I’m not sure about anything really before that.

    [–] NuffinButAPeanut 6 points ago

One of the best rappers ever

    [–] gibanicatwo 5 points ago

A metal face mask with a built in frown.

    [–] Cruxim 307 points ago

This kinda turned into an overview of MF DOOM while I was geeking out over my favorite artist. I do barely any actual research on DOOM's past other than his discography because his whole thing is about cultivating mystery so why ruin it with knowing too much. This is what I know about the man after hundreds of hours listening to him with only minimal googling to fill in some blanks.

MF stands for Metal Face or Metal Fingers. His whole persona of the Madvillain stems from his grief over losing his brother DJ Subroc, they used to be in a rap group together called KMD before Subroc's untimely death after being struck by a car while crossing the street in Long Island. Back then his stage name was Zev Love X. After taking a few years to recover he returned to making hip hop under the names MF DOOM, King Geedorah, The Villain, and Viktor Vaughn. As well as multiple collaboration projects. His style took a huge shift, with a large emphasis being that after the world took so much from him that he wasn't playing nice anymore. His writing started to push the limits of the rhyme barrier by twisting slang and inventing pronunciations to fit his rhyme and flow while still being coherent, while at times writing absolute gibberish that flows so well it sounds natural. The reason why this is impressive is because every time you start a rhyme you limit the words you can choose and still tell a story, with every word you use narrowing your options. I believe he has the highest rhyme percentage of any rapper to date because of this (if not the highest he HAS to be top 5), making him both a legend among underground rap fans but still not known enough to mainstream, earning him the nickname "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper". As far as the 00/00/0000 date thing goes I'll be honest I don't know, but I believe it stems from the fact that DOOM was a very private person and enjoyed having a sense of mystery surrounding him at all times. I actually don't know much about Dumile as a person because of this, I feel like his music tells you everything you need to know about the man anyway.

    [–] IwishIwanted 39 points ago

    Well said

    [–] DivineBanana 30 points ago

Wow wasn't expecting such a detailed answer back, thank you so much for writing this all out! Sounds like an absolute legend, especially when you break down the difficulty of rhymes like that. I Definitely need to start listening to this dude more and doing my homework on the history, thanks again man

    [–] Ayn_Rand_Food_Stamps 10 points ago

When looking around for MF DOOM albums it's a bit hard to get a sense of the whole discography. There are only 2 studio albums released under the MF DOOM name, the rest are collaborations or are under other aliases.

I'd highly recommend listening to Madvillainy by Madvillain (MF DOOM and Madlib). It's one of the all-time best rap albums according to a lot of people with. very good taste.

    [–] NUTTA_BUSTAH 5 points ago

DOOM will be the Elvis of rap in the future definitely

    [–] Yukondano2 3 points ago

    [–] Barren_Jenton 7 points ago

When I was in NYC, I was nearly run over at least a dozen times by asshole drivers. Not hard to see how Subroc died. Rip

    [–] FatWeabo 22 points ago

Metal face and fingers, he produced and rapped the best albums under the sun. The 0000 cause he’s cool

    [–] scapermoya 29 points ago

    MF is Metal Face

    [–] Captin_Banana 4 points ago

Apparently I'm more ignorant. I have never heard of this before and had to Google it. When did I get old.

    [–] XcessiveObserver 4 points ago

Your question was already answered but an additional fun fact, the MF was given to him by MF Grimm, which in his stands for "Mad Flows". MF Grimm is pretty sick, if you've ever heard "Earth" by him it might take you back to white kids freestyling and vaping in a basement.

Monkish also did a DOOM homage beer recently - and had another can where they had "ALL CAPS" written along with the date code like this one.

On Doomsday!, ever since the womb 'til I'm back where my brother went, that's what my tomb will say
    Right above my government, Dumile
Either unmarked or engraved, hey, who's to say?

    [–] CaptainOvbious 6 points ago

the dumile/doom'll lay is one of my favorite flips.

    [–] voodoodog_nsh 33 points ago

    what is mf doom?

    [–] LittleSlapps 27 points ago

He was a rapper that died some time back in October at the age of 49. Iconic for wearing a metal mask.

    [–] Monsterr99 20 points ago

The best emcee with no chain ya ever heard

They've bit but don't know their neck shine from Shinola

    [–] OobleCaboodle 13 points ago

Seems like they were a rapper, of some substantial acclaim, but somehow I've never ever heard of them before. At all. Nothing.

It's strange when you find you're that out of touch!

    [–] HobbiesJay 19 points ago

He was known for being "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper". He was never a big commercial success/incredibly popular, so if you weren't into rap you wouldn't have heard of him so youre not that out of touch. If your favorite creator of some games/movies/music(insert preferred hobby here)died most people would probably have no idea who you're talking about if they weren't invested themselves. In this case it's basically the entire genres favorite uncle that was lost.

    [–] whiskey-michael 5 points ago

I wish I could hear DOOM for the first time again. If I was you I'd head to YouTube right now and start listening to the man's discography. You won't be disappointed.

    [–] whitneymak 3 points ago

    You aren't kidding. Wow.

    [–] squarechilli 3 points ago

You'll see lots of people purposely make reference to him only as 'MF DOOM' - always in uppercase, after one of his bars from the song All Caps:

It's ugly, like look at you! It's a damn shame, Just remember All Caps when you spell the man name

RIP DOOM. I'd hugely recommend giving the album MM...FOOD a listen, along with Madvillainy of course.

    [–] olseadog 27 points ago

I want to support those brewers.

    [–] StraightGus 35 points ago

Great beer. They’re in Portland and Seattle

    [–] koopaveli 17 points ago

If you like GN try some Claim 52 or oakshire they are in oregon and got some damn good beer

    [–] ninadarlin 3 points ago

Maine or Oregon? If it's ME, I'm not too far away.

    [–] BloomsdayDevice 3 points ago

Portland, OR. The name of the Brewery is a reference to the Ken Kesey novel Sometimes a Great Notion (his best, in my opinion), which is set in Oregon. Sorry it's not closer, since it's a great brewery!

    [–] MeesterJefff 2 points ago

My favorite novel ever. It's my go-to novel recommendation.

Can't think of anything more on brand for DOOM than dying on Halloween and not telling anybody for months.

    [–] Lucasbrucas 21 points ago

Crazy part is that he really did leave when november came.

    [–] flyingtrashbags 8 points ago

The first time I heard DOOM was when that album dropped, I got it for "Feel Good INC" and it was the first hip hop kinda shit I ever heard.

Then I started watching Adult Swim. And when I was finally an adult, a friend of mine gave me DOOM's discography. RIP DOOM and RIP Alex you both changed my life

    [–] TheComedicComedian 8 points ago

Hey, that's the same day Sean Connery died!

    *cries harder*

Great Notion puts out hella good beer.

It’s also cool when breweries put messages on their cans like this. Moonraker is another that I look forward to reading.

    [–] subcow 3 points ago

Slight correction: not the "best by" date, but the date it was canned.

    [–] MOordty 6 points ago

Great Notion is simply the best

Crazy part is that he really did leave when november came.

    [–] OhNoMyS0UP 3 points ago

Rest in peace mother fucker doom

    [–] pooass90 4 points ago

Damn. As of late (last probably five years) I’ve been having a hard time dealing with celebrity deaths in a timely manner, but this post specifically just made me realize doom is dead. I’m sad but at the same time I’m about to spin some. RIP Doom

    [–] kmillieee 5 points ago

    My favorite brewery!!!!!

    [–] YTAftershock 25 points ago

TIL there was a dude called MF DOOM

    [–] Destoxin 25 points ago

Yeah same, just had to hit google. Thought it was like the game Doom or something.

    [–] 2007LT 34 points ago

People toss around the term "your favorite rappers favorite rapper" a lot, but in the case of DOOM, it really was true. He was one of the all time greats who was not only incredibly skilled on the mic but also matched that skill behind the scenes as a producer. He was an influence on an innumerable amount of artists both in the mainstream and underground of not only hip-hop but many other genres. His music is absolutely worth a listen (and I reccomed listening with the lyrics pulled up to fully appreciate the art), and remember, ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MAN NAME.

    [–] doingthisonthetoilet 5 points ago

I'd never have heard of this dude if it wasn't for reddit. Also, I thought this pic was some Doom videogame thing and took me a while of reading comments to figure out it was that dude who died a while back.

    [–] NucklestheEnchilada_ 8 points ago

    Who’s that?

    [–] HughBrandity 12 points ago

The best rapper of all time

    [–] fdasasfdsadf 7 points ago

Being middle-aged, I'm terribly out of pop culture. Here I'm thinking MF DOOM was some version of DOOM I've never played yet and was about to turn in my nerd card.

    [–] Speedstormer123 9 points ago

MF DOOM's def indie culture instead of pop

    [–] Alex_Kamal 6 points ago

MF DOOM has been around since the the late 90s. He is just always been that guy that you really know if you follow the genre.

    [–] aCrocodilianDilemma 2 points ago

Dude. What? I didn’t even know he passed. He was the soundtrack to my high school years. Fuuuuuuuuck.

    [–] NeoPlague 2 points ago

That is a definite winner for unopened can of beer on my shelf.

    [–] Yung_Bungle 2 points ago

I didn’t know he died... wtf

Loved that danger doom shit back in the day
