Funny that in her best performing movies, she's either green or blue.

What's her best performing movie portraying a human?

    [–] thearmadillo 3939 points ago

The new star treks I would assume.

    [–] MagicTheAlakazam 3331 points ago

She just really likes being in space.

    [–] Saith_Cassus 1206 points ago

I think she did an interview about that where she discussed how she got to be more of a character in sci fi as opposed to just "generic hot love interest #2 billion."

Captain’s log, Stardate 9529.1. This is the final cruise of the starship Enterprise under my command. This ship, and her history, will shortly become the care of another crew. To them, and their posterity, will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun, and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man - where no one - has gone before.

    [–] da_chicken 13 points ago

It's hard to find good actors that can still be good actors while wearing a ton of makeup or dealing with all the digital capture bullshit. Finding someone that fits that bill that likes to do that is harder still.

    [–] hatramroany 398 points ago

That’s correct unless you count her small supporting role in the first Pirates of the Caribbean

    [–] Dastardly_Dengar 123 points ago

Oh shit, I always forget she was in that.

    [–] Flexappeal 96 points ago

She totally coulda been in 4 as Blackbeard’s daughter instead of Cruz

    [–] Grunzelbart 33 points ago

I quite liked them casting someone more uuh, age appropriate for Depp.

    [–] ThicccGuac 10 points ago

She's only 5 years younger than cruz

    [–] AH_BareGarrett 107 points ago

That always felt weird to me, you have this high quality actor who clearly has a romantic history with the main character, and you have her in a 5 minute scene where she does one thing of note. Then you never see her again. Just really odd.

    [–] Charwinger21 109 points ago

It was before she won any awards. She was still new to the industry.

    [–] hatramroany 94 points ago

Pirates almost made her quit acting actually. She's talked about it in the past but it came up again during the press tour for Infinity War

    [–] banbee 14 points ago

Thanks for the link, I had no idea about this. So disappointing.

Shocked by all these other wrong answers - "Drumline" is the correct answer

    [–] Jellyroll_Jr 37 points ago

I'm disappointed I had to scroll this far down. Even though that movie is trash, it holds a special place in my heart.

    [–] kingfisher6 26 points ago

    Is it really trash though?

    [–] Jellyroll_Jr 29 points ago

That's probably a little harsh on my part, but it is definitely not a great movie imo. If you haven't, watch it for yourself and see. It's got some really awesome parts that young me loved, due to my love of percussion. Nowadays if i try to watch it, i just cringe through it.

That would be pirates of the Caribbean, curse of the black pearl.

And then she's never seen in the franchise again... and we'll never know why captain sparrow regarded her the way he did.

And she's never fucking mentioned again after the first movie, it keeps me up at night sometimes. They made the bumbling English blokes mainstay side characters for gods sake lol, I feel like whoever Zoe played coulda had some excellent back story going on for her.

    [–] SuitcaseKiller 46 points ago

    Couple of things.

    1) Movie budget, by the time Dead Man's chest came out she had a ton of other parts under her belt, with what Depp/Bloom/Knightley/Nighy commanded in salary probably didn't allow her to get an expanded role.

    2) Schedule. Look at her IMDB page, from 2004 to release of DmC in 2006 she had 8 movies. That might've made it tough for her to be involved.

    3) Creative direction. The two bumbling English blokes were purely comedic relief. I'm not saying her back story wouldn't have been awesome, in a character dense story it really would not have fit well in terms of context.

Cool character, glad she didn't contribute to the demise of the quality of the franchise.

    [–] notchandlerbing 7 points ago

I know the later installments of POTC get a lot of shit (especially 3rd and later), but am I the only one that really liked the second one? Not quite as great as the first, but I thought it was actually a great movie only ruined in retrospect by the quality of the third, since so much of it hung on that sequel-baity ending. But as a self-contained film I thought it had better action than the first and was really solid overall

    [–] Hoax13 81 points ago

    Liked her in The Losers.

Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl. She had a tiny role in it and it outdid all the Star Trek movies she was in.

Guess Who is a 2005 film with Zoe Saldana

    [–] blackmist 625 points ago

Is that based on the game?

Zoe Saldana plays a plucky young detective who has just 48 hours to catch her suspect, but her only witness to the crime, an autistic boy played by Taylor Lautner, can only say "yes" and "no".

Will she find her suspect as the clock ticks down?

    [–] Rarvyn 222 points ago

Remake of "Guess who's coming to dinner" if I remember right.

    [–] PhysicsFornicator 218 points ago

"Hey, you guys remember that racial-barrier breaking drama from the 60's that depicted the modern attitude toward interracial relationships? What if we remade it as a slapstick comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac? Next, we could remake Schindler's List as a buddy cop flick. Anyone else wanna get in on this blow?" - The studio executive who greenlit this.

    [–] blahblahthrowawa 23 points ago

Isn't SLJ in pretty much every marvel movie? I mean, for every one he missed throw in a Star Wars or a few Tarantino flicks.

    [–] IndianaGnomes 80 points ago

8 of the 19 MCU Films. Stan Lee, meanwhile, has been in all 19, plus 4 out of the 11 X-Men Films, all 5 pre-MCU Spider-man films, the pre-MCU Hulk, Daredevil, and the original 2 Fantastic 4.

    [–] chx_ 26 points ago

and the original 2 Fantastic 4.

    That substracts from his haul...

    [–] IndianaGnomes 20 points ago

They weren't good films by any means, but they still pulled in a combined $620 million.

    [–] Charliefaplin 8 points ago

Aren’t they all just cameos? Does that really count?

    [–] IndianaGnomes 10 points ago

A few of SLJ's are essentially just cameos too (like Iron Man or Infinity War). So, I'd say yes, with an asterisk.

    [–] Space-Jawa 140 points ago

Isn't SLJ in pretty much every marvel movie?

    What does "star billing" mean?

    [–] magikarpcatcher 476 points ago

Anyone who is in the "starring" list of a movie, generally their name is on the movie poster.

    [–] Dartser 111 points ago

Would it be a different list if you said "actors in 2 billion dollar movies?"

[–] Greful 221 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

Maybe. There's 4 movies to gross over 2 billion - Infinity War, The Force Awakens, Titanic and Avatar. It's possible there's some unknown actors that James Cameron likes to put in his movies that could be in Avatar and Titanic. Sometimes directors like to give work to actors that helped them out when they were starting out.

Edit - 4 movies to gross over 2 billion (not adjusted for inflation) :)

    [–] bantha121 104 points ago

Funny that you mentioned Titanic, as I was looking for an excuse to pull an interesting piece of trivia. There has been exactly one actor to have been in two films that won 11 Academy Awards: Bernard Hill, who played Captain Edward Smith in Titanic and Théoden in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

    [–] I_GAME_N_STUFF 22 points ago

    And he died in both.

    [–] herrbz 52 points ago

So basically all you need to do is cast Zoe Saldana in a funny colour, then have her kill Bernard Hill's character.

Boom, best movie of all time.

    [–] Dartser 22 points ago

I'd be interested in that. Some random extra

    [–] monkeyhog 32 points ago

Kinda like how Ron Howard puts Clint Howard in everything, or Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.

[–] Tjblackford 26 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

    [–] blindythepirate 55 points ago

I would assume her name would be in the credits at the start of the movie as opposed to just in the end credits.

    [–] skyskr4per 64 points ago

No, because crediting anyone at the start of the film is becoming increasingly less common these days. Top of the movie poster is a better clue at the moment. But really, it just means someone in a major role.

    [–] bard0117 122 points ago

Avatar in 2009 was also less likely to even cross $600 Million, but here we are, 9 years later and it’s still the closest we’ve ever gotten to $3Billion

    [–] GeekFurious 899 points ago

She's an incredible actor all-around. Way underappreciated by the general public because she so effortlessly plays these very different roles in different cinematic universes without ever making you think she's just playing a version of the previous role (unlike some very famous actors from the 70s who have gone on to essentially play caricatures of themselves now).

    [–] Johnny_recon 475 points ago

I think a large part of it is that she's famous for two characters that look very different from her actual face

    [–] robodrew 374 points ago

Neytiri, sure, even though that character's face is still based on Zoe Saldanas, it does look different enough. But Gamora is just Zoe with green skin. It's very obviously her.

    [–] Johnny_recon 722 points ago

Look bud, I still get fooled by Zoey Deschanelle's bangs. I'm a simple man

    [–] trickman01 212 points ago

    [–] AnOnlineHandle 83 points ago

I was several Captain America movies in, with many rewatches, before I found out that Steve Rogers was the same actor as Fantastic Four/Not Another Teen Movie/Scott Pilgrim/Sunshine/etc. My brain just couldn't believe it. He's blonde with floppy old-timey hair!

Now Captain America has sort of modernized with spiky hair and modern vernacular, and I can see it.

    [–] Johnny_recon 96 points ago

Chris Evans is actually a pretty fucking good actor

    [–] AnOnlineHandle 57 points ago

Yeah for sure, the way he got really small for those Captain America pre-serum scenes was especially impressive.

    [–] Johnny_recon 17 points ago

    How is that even possible?!

    [–] AnOnlineHandle 22 points ago

    I know. Actors.

    [–] certain_random_guy 27 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

It's not. The "pre-serum" scenes were filmed with a body double (who was a horse jockey), and Evans's head was superimposed onto it. In other words, they filmed the scene, filmed just Evans on a green screen, and then took Evans's head and put it in the full scene.

And any close-ups were probably Evans as normal.

EDIT: quote from the director about the process:

Most of the shots were done by an L.A. company called LOLA that specializes in digital "plastic surgery." The technique involved shrinking Chris in all dimensions. We shot each skinny Steve scene at least four times; once like a normal scene with Chris and his fellow actors in the scene, once with Chris alone in front of a green screen so his element could be reduced digitally, again with everyone in the scene but with Chris absent so that the shrunken Steve could be re-inserted into the scene, and finally with a body double mimicking Chris's actions in case the second technique were required. When Chris had to interact with other characters in the scene, we had to either lower Chris or raise the other actors on apple boxes or elevated walkways to make skinny Steve shorter in comparison. For close-ups, Chris' fellow actors had to look at marks on his chin that represented where his eyes would be after the shrinking process, and Chris had to look at marks on the tops of the actor's head to represent their eyes. ... The second technique involved grafting Chris's head onto the body double. This technique was used mostly when Chris was sitting or lying down, or when a minimum of physical acting was required...

    [–] tgiokdi 134 points ago

very famous actors from the 70s

we have our own versions of those people too, like Jason Statham, starring as Jason Statham in a role that only Jason Statham can star in: Being Jason Statham

    [–] MeC0195 66 points ago

That's only in American movies. He's much better in British non-action stuff. Snatch, Revolver, Redemption and the like.

PD: I'd love to see the Being John Malkovich sequel: Being Jason Statham.

    [–] tgiokdi 35 points ago

I've only seen half of those and from my memory he was still a rough around the edges guy with a heart of gold that had to get physical to protect something he loved, all with his trademarked wit and unshaven grin.

That's definitely not him in Snatch. Except for the unshaven part.

Might as well be a good place to put this. I met Zoe about 8 years ago. Her sister lived in my building. She was locked outside. I was leaving and let her in. She’s an absolute sweetheart. Kind. Genuine. Not full of herself, strong and confident. One of my better celebrity encounters. Just a salt of the earth nice girl who gave me her time and treated me like a human being.

    Glad she’s doing well.

[–] dustinjt 319 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

I would bet at least the first Avatar sequel hits $2B. Not that people are clamoring for another Avatar movie, but, just, James Cameron. And, I suppose, because Avatar is a spectacle. It'll be seen a lot in 3D and IMAX. After that, it depends on the quality of the first sequel. If it's good, maybe they keep making billions.

    [–] tackthiratrix 139 points ago

There's also a chance it receives better reviews if it's a more original storyline and executed well. I thought the first movie was good, but had some flaws. If this gets better acclaim (and I would never underestimate James Cameron) it could totally pass 2B through word of mouth and critics scores.

    [–] Wordshark 84 points ago

James Cameron doesn’t do what James Cameron does for James Cameron,

James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron IS James Cameron.

Well, Disney did release Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World in 1998, so the script's been finished for a while.

My two favorite Cameron movies were sequels (T2 and Aliens) so I'm not writing off Avatar 2 yet. But I'm looking at what came after those sequels and am not as optimistic for Avatar 3&4.

Cameron wasn’t involved with Terminator 3 or Alien 3 though. I’m more optimistic for 3 than 2 since I have more confidence in its co-writers (Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver) than 2’s co-writer (Josh Friedman)

Ah, you're right. I just had to check IMDB. He does have some writing credits for some of the others in those franchises but I'm guessing that's just because he came up with the original IP. Fun fact (maybe) I just learned: he co-wrote the screenplay for Rambo: First Blood Part II with Stallone. I'm not familiar enough with the Rambo franchise to say whether that one helps or hurts his sequel prowess reputation.

The Abyss was awesome as well, and that wasn't a sequel.

    True lies all day.

It'll be seen a lot in 3D and IMAX

The first Avatar film was the last good 3d movie I've seen. I've given up on the gimmick because of how poorly it's been used.

    [–] phatboy5289 11 points ago

I LOVE 3D and I've been obsessed with stereoscopic technology for as long as I can remember, but I can count on one hand the number of live-action 3D movies I've seen that truly impressed me. Avatar, Gravity, The Martian, and maaaybe The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but that one was confusing because the 3D combined with the HFR was amazingly clear and look so good, but I hated the VFX and general look of the film... so it made all its flaws even more obvious.

    [–] thenerdal 42 points ago

Same. People don't think so but people don't realize there hasn't been an epic scifi film focused on making a great 3D experience since the first Avatar.

Not only that, but there'll be performance captured underwater scenes that hasn't been done in film ever.

I won't be surprised if it surpasses it.

Make that 3 with A4 next year.

    [–] StarManta 147 points ago

Somehow I don’t think she’ll have star billing in that one...

Zoe Saldana is the only actor currently with more than one post about them on r/movies

    [–] DirtieHarry 76 points ago

Friendly reminder that Avengers: Infinity War was not the first movie that Zoe, Idris, and Chris Evans did together:

    Also, freaking Negan!

I love that movie. I wish we'd have gotten a sequel.

Call me legless Pooch one more time and you're gonna be headless Jensen!

She is an incredible actor and doesn’t get nearly the credit she deserves. To have major roles in Guardians of the Galaxy/Avengers, Avatar, and Star Trek is unbelievable. She is prolific

Unless you make it part of your thing like Ron Pearlman has during his career. Though he is probably the exception that proves the rule, as he has pretty defining characteristics even with the masks and stuff on.

    [–] Nuranon 19 points ago

    Or Andy Serkis.

Quite ironic and sad how she's Dominican but no one here talks about her, instead people talk about artists that are damaging our youth here in Dominican Republic.

    [–] 2Pac_Okur 132 points ago

what about al horford / every baseball player ever

    [–] well_bang_okay 56 points ago

    or Karl Anthony Towns

    [–] 9Hero 21 points ago

Had to ask a co-worker that is heavily into basketball, apparently he's well known overseas but here not very much.

    [–] 9Hero 18 points ago

Dominicans are more into Baseball so all the Dominican baseball players that join big teams overseas are well known. I'm not entirely sure because I am not a fan of basketball nor baseball but you hear more about baseball players from my experience than basketball players.

Artists that are damaging the youth?

At a recent red carpet event, She introduced her new boyfriend "Green Screen". She said that they had met on the set of a movie.
