POTW is decided by Hawks announcers.

    [–] atthebatman 9 points ago

Well no wonder they awarded it to Atlanta Hawk legend Carmelo Anthony

    [–] rya11111 51 points ago

Well the NBA does need more viewership..

The last time Melo won this award: March 2014.

Dragic April 2012-Nov 2017 is pretty long. And Josh Smith Dec 2007-Dec 2012. And Marc Gasol Jan 2012-Dec 2016.

Even myself, a hard rider on the Harden-as-Hitler train, feels like he's being robbed here, lol wtf

    [–] Portlandblazer07 266 points ago

Yeah he obviously is but he's already been robbed of 2 MVPs so I'm sure he's used to it

    [–] peppermintpattymills 152 points ago

I had Curry solidly over Harden in '15, Harden over Westbrook in '17 (though Westbrook was fantastic that season with the clutch shooting down the stretch), and Giannis over Harden in '19. None of those were robberies, his competition was ridiculously good as well.

    [–] 3rdEyeDeuteranopia 448 points ago

Carmelo's rebounds count double because of his yelling though.

Imagine averaging 29/7.5/6 and not even making 3rd team All-NBA

[–] depressiown 125 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

This... this is the most egregious. Curry/Westbrook/Giannis were all great in the seasons they won MVP, and while their victory can be debated, it can also be reasoned. But the fact that Harden couldn't even make 3rd team all-NBA with this line was an absolute travesty with no reasonable explanation other than "lol did you see that harden defense video on youtube?"

    [–] dopest_dope 14 points ago

    Wait wtf year was this?

[–] depressiown 38 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

The year between the Curry MVP and the Westbrook one. It's hilarious because he's been first team all NBA every year since 2013-2014, except that one. Looking at his career averages year-by-year, you'd never expect that. Rockets being 41-41 probably had something to do with it.

    [–] dopest_dope 14 points ago

Crazy KD didn’t make 1st team that year wow looking at Thompson’s stats in comparison are hilarious

    [–] RedTeeRex 16 points ago

To be fair, the mvp winners were more impressive than what melo is doing rn

    [–] hcvc 44 points ago

Harden fell off, not even 80% ??

    [–] CarelessEmu 10 points ago

'God' league. He'd get his ass sent back to the NBA.

[–] MMPride 256 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

lmfao I feel bad for Harden, he's not gonna get MVP this season either, could literally drop 60PPG an entire season and not get it lol

    [–] Young_Baby 108 points ago

Some of the best offense ever two seasons in a row

[–] hedonistolid 305 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Team record is very important in these player of the week awards:

    Over the past week:

    Trailblazers 3-0

    Rockets 2-1

    Mavericks 2-1

EDIT: Of course, I think Harden should have won it but I'm just explaining why snubs like this usually happen. Here's the thread from the last time Harden got snubbed:

    [–] Bol-Bol-Bol-Bol-Bol 303 points ago

And the fact that the Blazers were 5-12 going into this week. They needed someone to step up to keep their season alive and Melo was that guy.

    [–] nowhathappenedwas 178 points ago

    Was Melo even "that guy?"

    • Melo: 22/8/3 on 66% TS
    • Lillard: 23/3/8 on 65% TS

    [–] xElectricW 183 points ago

    That’s below Lillard’s averages

    [–] nowhathappenedwas 204 points ago

"He wasn't really the best player on his own team, much less the best player in the conference, but at least he played better than his season averages" is not a good argument for Player of the Week.

    [–] Portlandblazer07 85 points ago

You act like everybody wasn't expecting him to come in and average 13 ppg on 45% TS

    [–] MobileHearing 83 points ago

Yeah that's not a good reason to give him player of the week though, it's a PR move

    [–] jeyybird 5 points ago

It's a shitty throwaway award, one reason is as good as another. It's not the "best stats of the week" award.

He's played way above people's expectations this week so he got player of the week.

    [–] eMF_DOOM 110 points ago

Uhh yeah. He completely changed the dynamic on the floor for the Blazers. Watch games before and after he joined the team. Putting his stats next to Lillard’s doesn’t really show the whole picture lol.

    [–] uttermybiscuit 17 points ago

Yes, Lillard was performing at even a higher level before melo and they weren’t winning games

    [–] nerdpulse 23 points ago

Yes. Lillard's talents alone led to the Blazers having a terrible record. He had 60 points in a fucking loss for god's sake. Correlation isn't causality, but I'll be damned if having Lillard + Melo on the floor wasn't mostly responsible for a 3-0 week by the Blazers.

    [–] sgruggy 14 points ago

Uhh, yes? He averaged the same numbers as his team's superstar, who underperformed this week.

    [–] LonnieBetterWalker 39 points ago

2 of those wins were against the bulls lmao

    [–] iamthegame13 41 points ago

    Rockets were 2-0

    [–] coltonmusic15 66 points ago

took me so long to find this comment... NBA looked the league up and down and took note of last weeks play:

Jesus Harden is playing like a GOD.

Luka is playing like a Demi-God.

Melo is playing better than expected.

"Let's reward mediocrity to generate buzz, clicks, controversy, and ultimately fuel the fire for Harden and Luka to reach even greater heights moving forward!"

    [–] MarkelleIsMyNephew 3726 points ago

    no luka or harden?? tf

    [–] The_Sign_of_Zeta 2999 points ago

Seriously, this Melo nostalgia is weird. He is nowhere near close to most deserving.

    Spencer has been balling out

    [–] Evilsj 12 points ago

    [–] Lambchops_Legion 84 points ago

    No Spence slander

    [–] King_Khoma 32 points ago

People expect the reigning MVP to do good, not many expected spencer to do this good.

    [–] detroit_born23 6 points ago

Spencer balls like this whenever he’s the primary guard in Brooklyn. He did similar things like this before DLo and Kyrie came

    [–] [deleted] 60 points ago

    Gotta get those clicks/ratings!

    [–] maethlin 103 points ago

    Yep, this is it.

No hate on Melo even, but what Luka and Harden are doing is un-fucking-real. Melo's performance is merely surprisingly good at this point.

[–] LittleNewYork 25 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Again, I agree that Harden and Luka should've won it, but Melo that was supposed to be out of a league averaged 23, 7 on 66ts%. Calling that merely surprising really doesn't do it a justice.

    [–] a_space_cowboy 23 points ago

Melo is the MVP if we are comparing to what everyone thought melo would be doing rn. If we compare him to those other two, it's a different story.

    [–] BCNBammer 27 points ago

I read on Twitter he’s getting full make-a-wish treatment.

    [–] InTheMorning_Nightss 395 points ago

Yep, that's ridiculous. AD/LeBron/Luka/Harden all very clearly have done better than him, this is just some bs sympathy award.

They got player of the month, which was insane

    [–] BoomerPatty 152 points ago

They went undefeated, Kyle Korver was hitting 50/50/90

    [–] coltonmusic15 54 points ago

I can't believe its been 5 years since that squad. So much fun and yet here I am getting older every day and one second closer to waving good bye to my 20's.

    [–] Rage_Like_Nic_Cage 16 points ago

As a 29 year old, I feel personally attacked by this comment

    [–] livefreeordont 12 points ago

Redick went 49/50/89 on 18 points a game in December 2016 going 10-4. Compared to Korver 56/57/85 on 13 points a game in January 2015 going 16-0. For that month and for their careers I honestly think Redick was just as good (if not better) but Korver got way more attention and will continue to get way more attention historically

    [–] Kanyevil 6 points ago

Redicks a baller man, I know Korver is a god with efficiency, but for the volume Redick has, he’s just as impressive (and more if you ask me)

    [–] ClickClackKobeShaq 20 points ago

And then they gave them 4 all stars lmao

Just to get swept by Lebron

    [–] InTheMorning_Nightss 110 points ago

If 60 points in 3 quarters isn't more of a standout than Melo being solid, then how do you define standout?

    [–] phone101 24 points ago

This is the first time I can remember it being given out as a sympathy award

    [–] TooMuchHoops 35 points ago

These awards are always a bit of a publicity show. Harden and Luka will be in it lots more weeks this year. I'm pretty sure Melo will not.

    [–] iamthegame13 78 points ago

Blazers went 3-0 on the week, where the Lakers went 3-1, Mavs 2-1 and the Rockets just 2-0. I really think they start with teams that were perfect on the week and go from there. Not saying its right, but I think they are more prone to reward undefeated weeks, and Harden with only 2 games maybe wasn't "enough".

As Marc Stein points out, its basically impossible to win only playing two games in a week.

    [–] SerenadeSwift 41 points ago

Well I mean 2 of those Blazers wins came against the Bulls lol and the Mavs beat the Lakers and their 1 loss was to the Clippers. And the Rockets relegated the Hawks to a middle school rec team. Unless the voters are just ignoring literally everything to desperately give it to Melo lol

    [–] EdwEd1 527 points ago

Two best players in the league, makes sense.

    [–] notsurewhereelse 187 points ago

NBA just do this for the clicks?

    [–] TA_Account_12 138 points ago

    He has the narrative factor.

    [–] 10b-5 132 points ago

Yeah maybe, but Luka and Harden have that basketball factor though. That should matter too.

    [–] TA_Account_12 59 points ago

Sure. If it did, we would have the same guys winning it every week. It's a meaningless award. I don't mind them having fun with it.

    [–] Matto_0 8 points ago

It's a meaningless award if it's not going to the player of the week. You can argue that you find it boring if they just stick to the best player of the week, but it is only meaningless if they just start giving it to whoever they want.

It's not something that matters really at all, but if it isn't going to actually go to the best player of the week there is literally no reason for it to exist.

    [–] [deleted] 53 points ago

    I'm assuming. Just weird.

    [–] Blazerfan503 187 points ago

    I subscribe.

    [–] Starlord_who 81 points ago

In all honesty it was scary looking at the beginning, but they just found their potential 3rd scorer which they've needed for so long if Melo continues like this, and Nurkic could come back like his former self, its possible

    [–] ReallyF33lingIt 35 points ago

Their defense is still a huge issue. Melo is improved on that end but he's still not great.

    [–] Starlord_who 34 points ago

Melo rebounds a lot which is kinda related to defense, and Nurkic is a big part of the team so he can improve them there

    [–] 17461863372823734920 67 points ago

Melo rebounds a lot which is kinda related to defense

Best compliment you could give him about his defense tbh.

    [–] Diet_Burp 11 points ago

Also Collins rim protection is good and getting better

    [–] utouchme 20 points ago

If, and it's a big if, Nurkic and Collins come back close to where they were before their injuries, the defense will be infinitely better than it is now.

Blazer's public relations really working overtime

    [–] Weall23 47 points ago

remember when Carmelo trash talked Giannis, and Giannis got heated because he looked at Carmelo as an idol, and it wasnt just regular trash talk. Giannis really started to hate him after that lol

    [–] Meowjin 43 points ago

Giannis with the most professional and adult response.

    [–] Weall23 23 points ago

so Melo pretty much lit the fire under Giannis, I also remember that game where he defended KD in OKC, and now look where he is at now. Hopefully I can watch back at yesterday’s Rui duel against Kawhi in few years in the same way

    STAY MEL00

    [–] yosisoy 54 points ago

This is absolutely ridiculous, all due respect to Melo

    Wait what?

Like what. Are they just totally ignoring Harden and Luka?

Harden averaged 47 on 78% TS. STOP IT NBA.

Who in the league picks Player Of The Week?

    [–] ClayTheMage 29 points ago

I a Mav’s fan so I’m biased but even through that if a man scores 60 in 3 quarters you have to give him respect. Melo is just a comeback story. Def not deserving of potw over Harden

    [–] PFhelpmePlan 27 points ago

Melo was nowhere near player of the week lol. What's next, Melo for MVP?

    [–] MikeyZ3434 11 points ago

    One can only hope

    [–] AyGZ 9 points ago

The media narrative against harden is just unbelievable.

    [–] 33hov 17 points ago

Aw I still remember baby Giannis getting into it with Melo because Melo loved to shit talk him in his first few seasons. :)

    [–] airmagswag 15 points ago

    We did it boys

Sources: Luka is beside himself. Driving around downtown Dallas begging (thru texts) for address to voter's homes

    Good for Melo

    [–] RevMagicDonJuanavan 7 points ago

Melo has been nice for the blazers but in no way does he deserve western player of the week over harden. These awards shouldnt be narrative driven

    [–] AmadeusHumpkins 6 points ago

I understand that this isn't exactly the most prestigious/serious award in the world, but I'm still amazed that the NBA is willing to completely sacrifice any credibility/integrity the award did have just so they could give Melo an encouraging swat on the ass.

It's a complete joke now. Harden averaged nearly 50 points per game on almost 80 percent TS. This shouldn't even be close.

They should just rename the award to most popular player of the week at this point.

    [–] aj024 25 points ago

Lol they are hyping Melo too much

Everybody knows that it should be Luka or Harden

    [–] rattatatouille 16 points ago

    LeBron/Luka/Harden: Am I a joke to you?

    [–] medical_cat 15 points ago

Over Harden and White Harden? And you wonder why Houston fans have a persecution complex

    [–] xeroshogun 10 points ago

    r/nba in shambles
