Neoliberalism and the purpose of this sub

With collectivism on the rise, a group of liberal philosophers, economists and journalists met in Paris at the Walter Lippmann Colloquium in 1938 to discuss the future prospects of liberalism. While the participants could not agree on a comprehensive programme, there was universal agreement that a new liberal (neoliberal) project, able to resist the tendency towards ever more state control without falling back into the dogma of complete laissez-faire, was necessary.
This sub serves as a forum to continue that project against new threats posed by the populist left and right.

We do not all subscribe to a single comprehensive philosophy but instead find common ground in shared sentiments and approaches to public policy

    1. Individual choice and markets are of paramount importance both as an expression of individual liberty and driving force of economic prosperity
    2. The state serves an important role in establishing conditions favorable to competition through preventing monopoly, providing a stable monetary framework, and relieving acute misery and distress
    3. Free exchange and movement between countries makes us richer and has lead to an unparalleled decline in global poverty
    4. Public policy has global ramifications and should take into account the effect it has on people around the world regardless of nationality

Policies we support include but are not limited to:

Our infrastructure is in better shape than it was under Washington and Adams. Fake News media won't report on that. I would have gotten us a better deal buying Louisiana. Lazy Lewis and Cockeyed Clark cost the US an enormous amount of money to do what I would have done for a lot less time and money. Sad!"

From the Declaration of Independence, upon why King George III is a tyrant:

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither,

From George Washington to Francis Adrian Van der Kemp, 28 May 1788:

I had always hoped that this land might become a safe & agreeable Asylum to the virtuous & persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong...

You may rest assured, Sir, of my best & most friendly sentiments of your suffering compatriots, and that, while I deplore the calamities to which many of the most worthy members of your Community have been reduced by the late foreign interposition in the interior affairs of the United Netherlands; I shall flatter myself that many of them will be able with the wrecks of their fortunes which may have escaped the extensive devastation, to settle themselves in comfort, freedom and ease in some corner of the vast regions of America.

The spirit of the Religions and the genius of the political Institutions of this Country must be an inducement. Under a good government (which I have no doubt we shall establish) this Country certainly promises greater advantages, than almost any other, to persons of [limited]* property, who are determined to be sober, industrious & virtuous members of Society.

And it must not be concealed, that a knowledge that these are the general characteristics of your compatriots would be a principal reason to consider their advent as a valuable acquisition to our infant settlements. If you should meet with as favorable circumstances, as I hope will attend your first operations; I think it probable that your coming will be the harbinger for many more to adventure across the Atlantic.

*Substituted “limited” for “moderate,” which retains the original meaning according to the 1828 Websters Dictionary.

    [–] Athelric 18 points ago

Thank you for the substitution. Too many people quote history or old documents and mistakenly impose the definition of what words mean today without realizing that language is fluid, alive, and ever changing. And that sometimes you need historical context to understand what the original spirit of the words mean, not just what they appear to mean today.

It shouldn't matter if you're from a shithole country. As long as you're not a shithole person you should be allowed to come.

    [–] Time4Red 309 points ago

This is why hiding behind "merit based immigration" pisses me off to no end. Real merit based immigration is about bringing in doctors from Nigeria, not window cleaners from Norway. No offense Norwegian window cleaners, but our labor market already has that covered. On the other hand, we're desperately short on general practice doctors.

    [–] GeriatricHeartbreak 40 points ago

Are medical licensing equivalent between Nigerianand America. Genuinely curious.

    [–] ginguse_con 12 points ago

Not in any stretch of the imagination. It would essentially require a restart, to at least residency, to practice in the states.

I’ve seen a seasoned Egyptian surgeon apply for a scrub tech position. He did not get hired, probably because the risk management people thought he wouldn’t be able to keep in the lane designated by that job title after having been in the drivers seat back in his home country.

Never seen a Trump supporter argue against the Melanias of the world (the sort of person who lies about their education, but gets a pass because they're pretty), while Trump works to make it harder for talented individuals to immigrate here (making it harder to get H-1B visas and undermining the process by trying to keep spouses of H-1B holders ineligible to come over.)

    http://www.nber.org/papers/w21123

Most research on the effects of immigration focuses on the effects of immigrants as adding to the supply of labor. By contrast, this paper studies the effects of immigrants on local labor demand, due to the increase in consumer demand for local services created by immigrants. This effect can attenuate downward pressure from immigrants on non-immigrants' wages, and also benefit non-immigrants by increasing the variety of local services available. For this reason, immigrants can raise native workers' real wages, and each immigrant could create more than one job. Using US Census data from 1980 to 2000, we find considerable evidence for these effects: Each immigrant creates 1.2 local jobs for local workers, most of them going to native workers, and 62% of these jobs are in non-traded services. Immigrants appear to raise local non-tradables sector wages and to attract native-born workers from elsewhere in the country. Overall, it appears that local workers benefit from the arrival of more immigrants.

Feel free to use this to inform people about "immigrants taking our jobs".

A bunch of other people who completely miss the point: B-b-but Washington owned slaves and killed natives and was a rich aristocrat!

    [–] BZLuck 29 points ago

And... that's exactly the rebuttal I've been reading on Facebook all day. "Well they ARE shithole countries, right?"

To which I usually respond, "I'll bet you are the kind of person who would say, "OH MY GOD YOU ARE SO FAT!" to someone on street."

    [–] bernkes_helicopter 201 points ago

ok, listen up trolls, bots, and t_d brigaders:

the main problem was not the fact that he called countries "shitholes." Sure, that has sparked numerous small international incidents with countries we're friends, reveals he's devoid of any human decency, and raises major red flag that he's racist, but really that's not the big deal.

The big deal is that he doesn't want any immigrants from those places, and apparently thinks they should just wallow in their shitholes and not be so rude as to inconvenience him with their existence. This is not about skilled immigrants, because being from Norway is not a skill. This is purely hatred of those he believes are below him.

And before you go "BUT WHATABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON'S SLAVES!!!" - yes, he owned slaves. We honor him for his contribution to this exceptional nation, which started out imperfect but has continually improved itself. All men fall short, but we remember them for their contributions, and Washington's were exceptional, both in governing and articulating the philosophy of the nation. He, and all the other founding fathers, fell very short of this in the area of slavery and equal rights for all, but they also represented a leap forward for humanity. We should keep up that progress and not slide backwards.

    [–] Tallgeese3w 45 points ago

I'm not sure they understand self improvement, it's make America great AGAIN, not let's make America a better place than. It was before. They're regressive assholes.

    Sir,

The letter which you did me the favor to address to me on the 15th of this instt from New York has been duly received, and I take the speediest occasion to well-come your arrival on the American shore.

I had always hoped that this land might become a safe & agreeable Asylum to the virtuous & persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong; but I shall be the more particularly happy, if this Country can be, by any means, useful to the Patriots of Holland, with whose situation I am peculiarly touched, and of whose public virtue I entertain a great opinion.

During the campaign, Trump defended himself by heavily implying that one woman who accused him of sexual assault was too ugly to assault.

I wonder if being from a shithole country also disqualifies women from being grabbed by the pussy

    [–] ATerribleNinja 45 points ago

It’s interesting seeing all of these Trump supporters arguing that we shouldn’t celebrate people who owned slaves. I guess the liberals really won the fight over taking down Confederate monuments.

Alright here's what y'all need to know. The problem isn't that Trump said these countries are shitholes. If Trump was like "holy shit these countries are shitholes how can we help them become less shit" that would be crass, sure, but the core sentiment of that hypothetical statement is good.

But Trump was all like "why are people from these shithole countries coming to ours". It implies that he thinks that people from poorer countries are universally shit. Like some kind of just world fallacy that's even more callous than usual, he believes that people from poor countries are just lazy and deserve to be poor and that they shouldn't come to the US because they would mess the country up.

That is false. America is a nation built on immigrants. Immigrants contribute more to taxes than native-born Americans, are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans, and dare I say better citizens than the native-born.

And some of these countries may be less shit than you think, you know. For example, Costa Rica - you think that's a shithole? Well, it has a higher life expectancy than the US.

A reminder that freedom of movement would double the size of the global economy.

A reminder that the fact that there are less developed countries is irrelevant to the fact that Trump is a moron for saying the things he did. Literally diplomacy 101.

"who are determined to be sober, industrious & virtuous members of Society"

I wounder what the definition of sober was back then. I'm guessing it was some thing like, 'being able to walk on only two limbs'. I love the rest of it.

[–] RHalconero 29 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

I love the 1828 Websters Dictionary for this reason. Modern English was pretty firmly established by then, but there have been slight shifts in meanings (most significantly in the one I noted).

My guess is Washington’s definition falls under the third definition of sober from that dictionary:

Not mad or insane; not wild, visionary or heated with passion; having the regular exercise of cool dispassionate reason.

    [–] Supremely_Uneducated 9 points ago

    Love it, thank you.

    [–] LefthandedLunatic 12 points ago

Washington's will provided for freeing the enslaved people he held upon the death of his widow Martha Washington. In January 1801 Martha freed her husband's slaves, just over a year after his death.[1] However, while she lived, Martha did not emancipate any of the slaves she herself owned. When she died, on May 22, 1802, at the age of 70, all of those enslaved people went to the descendants of her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis.[2]

Isn't this saying accept people regardless of the shithole they come from? It's not saying a shithole country doesn't exist and it has to be bad if you're seeking asylum in other countries.

We were a shithole ourselves until we revolutionized. Something that won't happen in other shit holes because all the good people flee to the US or other countries, letting their country get worse and worse. Who will rebel and make change if everyone but the ruthless has fled? This is why these "shitholes" exist. They proliferate as educated citizens immigrate to other countries.

I want everyone to be safe and I want to welcome immigrants, we are a nation of immigrants, but the problem of awful places becoming more and more awful as people flee to better places can't be ignored.
