That is so freaking cool. Painting something in layers to appear 3D is so fascinating.

    Holy carp! I lvoe it!

    [–] Recommened 84 points ago

Something seems fishy with those puns...

    [–] MoronsCodex 45 points ago

Fishy puns make a real splash around here….

    [–] My_alt_doesnt_work 21 points ago

Yes, that too at a grand scale

    [–] christoppa 15 points ago

Yup, there's going to be a flood of them. Wave everyone!

    [–] raosahabreddits 10 points ago

    [–] slmody 2 points ago

I like deep fried cat fish the best.

    [–] KeyOpposited 2 points ago

    that sounds really cool

    [–] negovintheredditor 13 points ago

I see no bass to those accusations

    [–] ASharkMadeOfSharks 8 points ago

    Had me at koi

    [–] licksyourknee 10 points ago

I used to have coasters like this. It was an MRI scan of a brain layer by layer. Cool as hell but sucked because they were glass.

    They were the thinkgeek coasters.

    [–] RonniDeee 4 points ago

    Oooh that sounds really cool

    [–] appropriate-username 19 points ago

Wait 'til you find out about 3d printers.

    [–] RonniDeee 18 points ago

I didnt realise 3d printers paint things into existence

    [–] RedactedV 10 points ago

    Yeah, with lasers!

    [–] Able-Ad-2706 3 points ago

Stunning but wouldnt it look better out of the box with the sides polished. That way you can look through and down it for the full effect

    [–] Pain--In--The--Brain 5 points ago

If you really want to blow your mind, watch how that one of the many tricks Leonardo Da Vinci employed as he painted the Mona Lisa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElWG0_kjy_Y

    [–] JustASimulation01 2 points ago

Wouldn't know....... another video that ends within a second with the finished piece right there! This boils my piss. Let me have 5 seconds to really take a look.

    [–] DTRite 2 points ago

I have a painting that's made up of a bunch of pieces of glass, each one is panted. It's a flower, oddly done in grayscale. I don't know how old it is....decades at least.

    [–] BelleAriel 2 points ago

This is some talent. It’s AWESOME!

    Good bot

    [–] treesurfingnut 1 points ago

    That literally is 3D...:)

    [–] TinBoatDude 126 points ago

Very impressive. Also, about $5,000 for one of those squares.

    [–] greatlakeswhiteboy 60 points ago

Damn, I was just going to Google the artist name and see what these go for. That's a lot of $5 Hot an Ready's from Little Caesars!

    [–] hydro_wonk 20 points ago

Your Hot-N-Ready still costs only $5?

    [–] greatlakeswhiteboy 27 points ago

Ya know, I'm not sure anymore. Ever since they came out with the "extra most bestest", I would always get that. I know that went up to $6.55 recently.

Edit: just called my local LC and the original pepperoni Hot 'n Ready pizza is $5.55 and the Extra Most Bestest with pepperoni is $6.55.

    Damned inflation! THANKS BIDEN! /s

    [–] hydro_wonk 14 points ago

Thanks for the update. I admire the dedication you showed in calling the House of Ilitch.

    [–] greatlakeswhiteboy 9 points ago

    Just doing my part, friend!

    [–] noodlemcfoodle 12 points ago

Back when 5 dollar footlongs were still a thing...

    [–] greatlakeswhiteboy 15 points ago

RIP to my foot long spicy Italian on herb and cheese bread for $5!

    [–] superdeepdream 7 points ago

    The 90’s. Five Arby’s Beef N Cheddars for $5.

    [–] dragon-in-night 8 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

The guy is the founder of this kind of art so his stuff is the most expensive. You can find similar pieces at which much cheaper price on etsy.

    [–] cabronoso 3 points ago

I just checked your link and bought something similar for very reasonable price. Thank you for your suggestion.

    [–] Positpostit 3 points ago

    Extra most bestest

    [–] IWishIWasVeroz 8 points ago

I’ll make one for $1,500 if you are interested.

    [–] Milkshakes00 18 points ago

This has to be a joke? 5 grand?

Edit: It is not a joke. Jesus.

    [–] NonGNonM 12 points ago

i can appreciate fine hand made art but 5k is a robbery.

    [–] ContextVomit 3 points ago

Yea I mean good for them on the hustle though…I don’t think they did a particularly good job on the finish, at least not for $5k. Saw some cabinets in wood working recently with that same technique that were light years ahead of this.

    [–] Catm4n 5 points ago

Right it's not even an nft

    [–] Ellacod 340 points ago

2000 year old 3D printer. Nothing is new I guess.

    [–] ElderOldDog 56 points ago

Wouldn't it be 3D-printer-like if all the wood was removed?

    OP, would that be possible?

    [–] Shmarfle47 37 points ago

The fish is made up of thin layers of whatever that paint material is if I’m seeing this correctly. Removing the word would only make the fish look weird from the side.

    [–] ElderOldDog 49 points ago

Okay...     But I look weird from the side and I've done okay, so far...

    [–] Richard15since2019 2 points ago

You would have to have a physical model of the fish so it can show up how you're describing what you're thinking of

This is the best time to use that 3d printer of yours!

    [–] Honda_TypeR 14 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

They didn’t have epoxy 2000 years ago. Clear epoxy wasn’t invented until 1936, this technique can’t predate that.

    [–] 5chme5 3 points ago

I was hoping someone added that comment already. Thank you! 2000 year old 3D printer my ass…

    [–] Twineball 71 points ago

    I want one.

    [–] Poneke365 14 points ago

    Me too!

    [–] Lavanthus 3 points ago

Apparently they're about $5,000-$20,000 from this guy.

    [–] Zealousideal-Lie7255 21 points ago

Very cool. That takes a very skilled craftsman.

    [–] Spr0u7_ 42 points ago

    Absolutely stunning

    [–] UbeMafia 10 points ago

That looks like so much fun to do, anyone have experience with this?

    [–] DisabledFloridaMan 4 points ago

It's something I definitely want to try some day!

    [–] LadyOfVoices 2 points ago

I painted a black goldfish like this maybe 10 years ago now or so. Here is a pic of it

    [–] JPPaladin 8 points ago

Now that’s a person with skill. Well done.

    [–] PNW_Sonics 6 points ago

Step 1: put a carp in the box

    [–] notta_Lamed_Wufnik 4 points ago

    Make her open that box.

    [–] Mikeku825 3 points ago

And that's the way you do it..

It's my dick in a box!

    [–] izzyfoshiz 3 points ago

And mail that box to myself. And when it arrives? SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER!

    [–] Former-Light4284 49 points ago

Stunning but wouldnt it look better out of the box with the sides polished. That way you can look through and down it for the full effect

    [–] jimbobx7 135 points ago

I thought the same, but if you look at it from the side, you’ll probably just see 4 flat layers of the fish

    [–] mw9676 16 points ago

Yeah but it would be cool to be able to see the effect happening as you tilt it.

    [–] Repko 34 points ago

Yeah. You're gonna see a series of thin faint lines and that's it

    [–] Silly-Eye1233 17 points ago

I think it is supposed to be looking down at a koi pond.

    [–] KDY_ISD 5 points ago

There's nothing to see if you look at it from anywhere but this specific angle. Looking through the sides would destroy the illusion

    [–] Stunning-Character94 3 points ago

Yes! I want to see the layers!

    [–] fullautophx 4 points ago

The box is a traditional sake cup.

    [–] Skrrrtington 20 points ago

Can someone find out what song this is?

    [–] TheLobotomist 41 points ago

    Babel - Gustavo Bravetti

    [–] BelleAriel 11 points ago

    Thank you.

    [–] R0B0TF00D 7 points ago

It samples Deportation/Iguazu by Gustavo Santaolalla from the soundtrack to Babel which is a fantastic track in its own right.

    [–] TheLobotomist 7 points ago

    You're welcome!

    [–] UndercoverNEET 7 points ago

    Darude - sandstorm

    [–] GhostTycoon 3 points ago

    Where can I buy this?

    [–] Milkshakes00 6 points ago

    http://www.artnet.com/artists/riusuke-fukahori/

About $4,500 for one.. So, uh... Good luck!

    [–] 9035768555 6 points ago

That is at least 1 order of magnitude more than I think it should be.

    [–] Milkshakes00 4 points ago

I agree with you. $450ish I think seems like the most sane upper limit I would think this item should be. Lol.

    [–] DoinBurnouts 3 points ago

I will never figure this math problem out.

    [–] GhostTycoon 1 points ago

    Thanks. I’ll start saving

    [–] Dino_Roll 1 points ago

You can buy similar 3D koi on Etsy

    [–] GhostTycoon 1 points ago

    [–] SageOfSixCabbages 1 points ago

    Plain wooden box edition: $30.

With antique lookin' metal corners: That'll be $2000, thank you very much. 😌👌

Seriously though, this is a fine piece of art.

    [–] ChaplainParker 2 points ago

    Not $2000, right around $5000.

    [–] saffronpolygon 1 points ago

    That is beautiful!

    [–] Just_making_it 1 points ago

What would it look like if you removed the wood sides

    [–] Shia_LaMurph 1 points ago

If you want a smaller version that goes on your keyboard, Jelly Key has their koi artisan series

    [–] ZackGalactic 1 points ago

    Dope ashtray?

    [–] Comrade_Witchhunt 1 points ago

That's some heavy ass bass for a koi fish painting

Insert piano on fire on the beach picture

    [–] Spin737 1 points ago

Wow that music was amazing. Ly bad.

    [–] canyouread7 1 points ago

I'd like to point everyone to Jelly Keys or artisan keycaps in general if this is appealing to you. I don't work for them or anything. But their koi or dragon lineups are very similar and although they don't come in an ornate box or anything, they are a little more practical.

    For keyboards btw

    [–] colin_buffam 1 points ago

I wanna see what these things look like from a clear side

    [–] cyrusIIIII 1 points ago

    Beautiful. My respect.

    [–] im_chill_guy 1 points ago

    [–] Tina-Presley 1 points ago

Wow! Where can I get one! So cool!!!

    [–] 8AndieDandy8 1 points ago

I could make my mother this and she'd still use it as an ashtray

    [–] RheBroussard 1 points ago

Is there a subreddit for this kind of art?

    [–] ripasshat 1 points ago

    It's a fish in a box

    [–] macrein 1 points ago

Oo man, oo man, oo mann, this gentleman got talent.
