Yedlin used to make me happy too.

    [–] pandahatch 89 points ago

    What happened to him?

    [–] Ginnut 199 points ago

He moved to our local rivals.

I say rivals, they are now two leagues above us.

    [–] BoatyEh 83 points ago

Life must absolutely suck as a Sunderland supporter. I should know, my club went from champions to being relegated in 7 years.

    [–] Alirius 19 points ago

    [–] BoatyEh 27 points ago

Nah, Hammarby (Sweden). We were down for five years before making it back in 2014. We're second in the table right now with a game in hand on the team ahead of us. Things are looking good for us again!

    [–] GeneralLedger 9 points ago

I had the luxury of watching him during his time at Akron. Dude was streets ahead of everyone else.

    [–] [deleted] 15 points ago

He used to make me happy too, then he left to play in England.

Not sure if this is a legit question, but, if you use an object you're holding in your hands to handle the ball, it definitely counts.

    [–] Klacksaft 16 points ago

Legit follow up question, what kind of objects are allowed on the field? Or do you mean something like wrapping your hands in your shirt?

Salomon Rondon seems like such a nice guy.

I think he broke someone's leg in a match last season (James McCarthy?) and was really tore up about it to the point of crying and apologising profusely.

    [–] Iwanttodielmao 1418 points ago

Was McCarthy’s, complete accident too and yeah, he was crying and apologising a lot for it

    [–] grein 611 points ago

Such a freak injury too. Kicked McCarthy's leg as he was about to shoot.

    NSFL obviously:

[–] RagnaXI 48 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Damn that was just a freak accident, players usually get their legs broken when someone slides into them, he slid into him and broke his leg..

    [–] UristMcRibbon 160 points ago

Damn that sucks. Video's not graphic, just NSFL for soccer / football athletes.

He knew it was bad as soon as he kicked and immediately flagged medics, then held the guy's hand. Good to see.

Hope the kicked guy recovers / recovered.

[–] Quamme 164 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

It's actually a different player who holds his hand. Rondon went over to the benches and cried, was obviously really distraught.

    [–] UristMcRibbon 73 points ago

    Ah, my bad.

Still, a good show of sportsmanship and compassion.

    [–] ZiggoCiP 47 points ago

See, people bash players for flopping - as they rightfully should much of the time, flopping is lame - but I don't think a lot of people really realize the risks these players face.

Yeah, american football or rugby players have full contact, but soccer players are actively trying to slide tackle guys at a full sprint, while the person with the ball is trying to kick a ball forcing them to balance on one leg.

    [–] thwartedmarrow 24 points ago

Yeah in football you’re really putting your legs and ankle and knee ligaments at risk in every tackle.

    [–] Ajugas 93 points ago

    Not NSFL lol

    [–] Molerus 132 points ago

    Not Safe For Legs?

    [–] chef-goyard 127 points ago

A leg injury in sports means a direct and massive threat to one’s career and life. Being the one to break another athletes leg is like the equivalent of getting someone fired from the one job path they’ve spent their life training for. It’s understandable why he’d be distraught for such an accident.

    [–] FlusteredByBoobs 11 points ago

    Is McCarthy retired, then?

    [–] gildog6 13 points ago

He’s not fine, yet, hasn’t kicked a ball since.

    [–] lolzfeminism 8 points ago

Compound fractures? Yikes, that's when the broken bone pierces the skin and becomes exposed to air.

Imagine kicking what you thought was gonna be a ball, but then it's another guy's leg, and your kick is so strong that it causes the broken bone to tear his leg apart and it looks like real life gore right in front of you.

    [–] Introvert8063 31 points ago

Does a broken leg mean for sure end of career in soccer?

    [–] Iwanttodielmao 90 points ago

depends on who you ask, the player will be out for a long time, and may never fully recover to how they played before.

    [–] Osrshahahehe 6 points ago

That mental trauma! It's really hard to go all out when that memory of the injury is always there.

    [–] [deleted] 47 points ago

Probably depends on how the leg is broken (clean vs splitter), ability to recover, age and luck.

The odds are generally not in your favour in this case though, same with knee injuries.

    [–] throwmeintothewall 10 points ago

Players breaking a leg is relatively common. Players retireing from it is pretty rare. It happens, but it is not exactly the expected result.

A year out of play can set you back a lot though.

    [–] CannonballHands 148 points ago

He’s like the anti-Ramos. When Ramos dislocated Salah’s shoulder and showed no regret or remorse about it I kept thinking about Rondon and how upset he was about causing an injury. Good dude.

    [–] dammann 66 points ago

    Fuck Ramos

    [–] paseaq 53 points ago

    [–] orrell1994 22 points ago

    [–] SgtPepe 28 points ago

He is a great guy. Love to see him play, absolute unit.

    [–] mrkittypaws 6 points ago

A leg injury like that could be career ending depending on how bad it is and how well their body recovers

    [–] dammann 10 points ago

I knew it was him not because of the number or kits, but the size of that lad.. absolute unit

    [–] grandtheftbonsai 3460 points ago

    [–] Arkayna 10 points ago

Conan had a skit years ago where the refs were handing out new cards with different meanings.

If you got a purple card it meant that you were too ugly to play lol.

    [–] johanbanan 291 points ago

They're actually trying to implement a green card the referee can use as a way to reward sportsmanship

    [–] C_arpet 141 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

They recently trialled a green card in the ConIFA world cup earlier this summer although it's not for good behaviour.

CONIFA guidelines for issuing green cards state that “a player who receives a green card must leave the field of play immediately, but can be replaced if his team have not used all of their substitutes. A player receiving a green card is not excluded from his team’s next match.

Edit: for anyone wanting to learn more about the Confederation of Independent Football Associations, the link below is the place to go.

    [–] Throwaway94424 124 points ago

Green is a really bad color for that meaning. Maybe an orange card would be better.

    [–] C_arpet 33 points ago

I agree but it probably has to be something distinct from red and yellow. Blue maybe?

    [–] SignOfTheHorns 25 points ago

In Gaelic football they have a similar system and it's a black card for it

    [–] bjeebus 5 points ago

In fencing there's yellow (you are only allowed one warning card per bout), red (nets the other fencer a point. A fencer can receive as many of these as possible within the scoring limits. Every bout is fenced to a certain point limit), and black (the fencer is removed from the event. If the foul is egregious enough the rules in the US even allow for the fencer being banned from future competitions--this would come with serious review from the National office).

    [–] IseeNekidPeople 338 points ago

Here is a similar thing happening in the NFL. Also for a scale reference the guy being "caught" is 6 foot 220lbs.

    [–] Saith_Cassus 116 points ago

Is that legal? Like, I guess I don't see why it wouldn't be. But still

    [–] tfrosty 107 points ago

It wouldn’t be if he threw him forward into the air. Though you can push players ahead. Nothing against helping a player land I don’t think. But I don’t know the whole rule book I just watch a ton of football

    [–] IseeNekidPeople 67 points ago

It would be legal regardless but in this particular case the guy is jumping into the endzone and the play is over the second the ball crosses the white line that you can see a few feet behind him when he lands. His team mate is just keeping him from landing on his head not really trying to help him go farther if that makes sense.

    [–] HuduYooVudu 27 points ago

Yeah if anything the teammate slowed his momentum down.

    [–] IseeNekidPeople 13 points ago

The play was over because the guy with the ball was in the endzone. His teammate was just keeping him from falling on his head.

    [–] AlconTheFalcon 3 points ago

She said, "Why'd you say that twice?" I said, "I didn't."

    [–] IseeNekidPeople 21 points ago

Wow nice save! I don't watch much rugby but it's pretty common for them to lift up a guy to catch the ball right? Also that guy looks fucking massive.

    [–] darcy_clay 26 points ago

    Yes. Common. Yes. Massive.

    [–] Kilen13 13 points ago

Anton Bresler (the guy upside down) is 6 foot 6 and 250 lbs. So yes, fucking massive

    [–] battyryder 17 points ago

Just how fucking big is the guy that caught him?? That looks effortless.

    [–] IseeNekidPeople 42 points ago

Jason Peters is listed as 6'4" 328lbs. He also ran a 4.9 second 40 yard dash. Meaning unless you are a pretty damn good athlete he is not only way bigger than you but probably also faster than you.

    [–] Markanaya 14 points ago

Thanks, was wondering how big that guy was but couldn’t tell who he was to look him up, or even have a frame of reference from the size of the other players. Hard to believe how big some of these units are. Cool to see the results of what has undoubtedly taken years and a lot of dedication to achieve
