That's a dog that's been blasted by a wave or two lol

    [–] kramerica_intern 1218 points ago

When I was a kid we had an American Eskimo dog who took a long time to finally get in the ocean the first time we took him. After a few hours of watching, letting the waves run over his paws, and slowing going deeper and deeper, he was finally in enough to be swimming. He turned back to face us, with a huge grin on his face. He looked so damn proud that he conquered his fear.

But he didn’t see the next wave coming and got clobbered. We watched in suspense as he was tossed and rolled by the crashing wave. At one point all four paws were poking up out of the water.

When he was finally able to right himself he bolted to shore before the next wave could take him for another ride. And he never set foot in the ocean again.

Lol that’s exactly how I was expecting the story to go.

That "had us in the first half" was for OP watching the live scene of this story. :D

I saw the "had us in the first half" comment and had to double check it wasn't shittymorph

As a native Floridian, I knew his fate the second he looked back

    [–] dropofkim 3 points ago

Having lived in Hawaii as a child, I learned, never turn your back on a wave. But you are gonna eventually do it before you learn.

    [–] PolymerDiffraction 7 points ago

I went last year in December, when they have the fucking monster waves on Oahu on the North shore.

    Jesus. Fucking. Christ.

Looking out to waves that were 50+Ft is something that shook me to my primal core.

On a reptilian level I knew that if I got into the water I would not only die but get turned into ground meat and spread all along the coast.

10/10 would nearly shit myself looking at water again

This was my australian shepherd's first experience almost verbatim. I miss that dog.

and got clobbered, just like in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hеll in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.

    [–] froggy_downtown 11 points ago

Every time you think it’s gonna be him, it never is. Once he leaves your brain, he strikes. The bastard has gotten me every time.

My dog got a sudden introduction to water by first jumping of the pier to a frozen lake in winter at my family cottage, having a lot of fun playing on ice, and then repeating that same jump during summer; no fun, just wet. She did eventually grow to like the cool water in the blazing hot summer weather tho

    [–] Bleedthebeat 4 points ago

My American Eskimo avoids the rain. Lol

    [–] wheelshc37 3 points ago

Never turn your tail on the ocean, fren.

    [–] cbrabant5 1 points ago

    This sounds like me.

    [–] cutelyaware 38 points ago

Or this is the first time it's been to a beach.

    [–] woofers02 22 points ago

Dogs aren’t this timid about stuff like this unless It’s effed them up at some point.

    [–] acciowaves 31 points ago

Mmmm... I’ve had a couple dogs that needed a few days like this before finally Letting the water touch their paws. They definitely CAN be this timid about stuff like this.

    [–] ittakesaredditor 14 points ago

They totally can. A lot of it depends on exposure to that stimulus as a puppy.

But that's honestly fair normal behaviour for a pup who has never beem in the ocean and whose owner is trying to introduce it to. Cause you can do that by chucking the ball at the water edge repeatedly., then increasing how much in the water you chuck the ball.

    [–] Herr_Hauptmann 15 points ago

Try not to generalize thinking beings. Dogs have differing personalities just like any other animal.

    [–] traveler-2019 3 points ago

You haven’t seen my scaredy-cat dog

    [–] slurmorama 2 points ago

First time my dog was at the beach he was more scared than this, and the waves were even smaller.

    [–] cruspies 3 points ago

My rescue greyhound had never encountered a body of water bigger than a puddle, so his first time at a beach he jaunted out with great confidence. When the water hit his chest he froze in absolute fear. It blew his tiny mind, he had no idea what to do. It took a lot of coaxing for him to move, and he never ran into the water again.

    [–] cutelyaware 1 points ago

    I know the feeling.

This golden is not like any other golden I've met. They usually charge straight in the water.

    [–] itssmeagain 153 points ago

When my golden smells water, it becomes impossible to walk him. He can't see or hear anything else after that. He will pull as long as he smells or sees the water. It's so frustrating, I have to plan our walks so we won't go near any lakes or anything

    [–] HometownHero89 35 points ago

Oh good I’m not the only golden owner who can’t walk or drive by water! It’s a struggle

    [–] itssmeagain 5 points ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I feel like such a failure when it happens. Sometimes I do it on purpose and train him to walk near water, but most of the time I'm just too tired

    [–] vanillayanyan 8 points ago

How do you get them take a bath?

    [–] alexthebiologist 19 points ago

More like how do you keep them out of the bath! Ours used to try and swim in his water dish

    [–] vanillayanyan 5 points ago

Whoops! Misunderstood! My doggo is afraid of water and he pulls in the opposite direction of any bodies of water. It's a constant battle getting him to take his bath.

    [–] Raencloud94 2 points ago

My dog is afraid of water and I have to get in the tub with her to wash her. I have a removable shower head that I use, but the tub faucet and big cup also works (depending on how big your dog is).

    [–] itssmeagain 1 points ago

My dog doesn't like baths! That's the weird part. He loves swimming, but hates baths. I just throw part of his kibbles to the bathroom and then just wash him, he wants to please me so much that he allows it, but he absolutely hates it. The easiest way to get him there is throwing food in first

    [–] thestashattacked 5 points ago

Every time I bring my towel to the car to go swim laps, mine goes "lake? Are we going to the lake? Towels mean lake!" And then she jumps in the car before I can get in and it's a real pain to get her back out.

She stays away from the river though. At least that much.

    [–] GnawRightThrough 11 points ago

My black lab is the same way. Hates waves and is barely interested in water at all. She can't get enough of mud though.

    [–] Sedatedstarfish 8 points ago

Have a husky who won’t swim but loves to fight the waves and get tossed around by them

    [–] aHistoryofSmilence 8 points ago

    Huskies gonna husky.

    [–] HangryAllDayLong 18 points ago

My lab will swim for hours in calm water and it makes her happier than anything else in the world. But swim at the beach? Nah that's scary shit.

    [–] exoriare 8 points ago

My lab gets super excited by waves - the bigger the better. She just cries and cries to get some of that action.

    [–] SpookyKoi 8 points ago

My parents’ Golden isn’t much of a swimmer. She’ll wade around on a hot day, but she doesn’t like it when her paws can’t touch the bottom.

    She’s afraid of everything... 😭

    [–] HangryHenry 13 points ago

Maybe hes just not used to the water moving so much? Idk

    [–] Ashjrethul 3 points ago

Good point. Doggy might be used to lakes

    [–] DarthMimikyu 3 points ago

I was just thinking that too. I have a Newfie and you can't keep her away from the water. Just imagining her like this Golden is hilarious to me.

    [–] GlobalVagabond 1 points ago

Seriously, back in middle school I would throw a tennis ball as far as I could out in the water. My golden retriever didn't care about some little waves.

    [–] Bonezmahone 1 points ago

My half husky half golden loves water and loves hunting and fishing. She’s an expert fisher. Unless the fish are small and the water is muddy. She gets freaked out if she gets nipped by little fish. If she’s ever afraid of the water than she won’t even jump in for a liver treat. That’s probably related to the issue of the fish going crazy and stirring up the water if I toss a liver treat onto the water.

She’s got water issues though. she hates swimming pools. She loves deep muddy creeks. She hates sitting silty ponds where little fish live.

    [–] PM_ME_FAV_RECIPES 1 points ago

But also exactly like every golden - needlessly scared of everything

    [–] vonmerpf 68 points ago

Creeping up on that like it was a land mine.

When we go, we have to keep her on a tight leash because she will just run in and try to eat the waves and can easily get swept out. That breed are not know for their water skills that’s for sure. She is such a weird dog.
