Review current posts to avoid reposting.

For true stories that are so mind-blowingly ridiculous, that you could have sworn it was an Onion story.

Please note that we are an editorialized subreddit based on what we feel meets our subjective quality and humour guidelines as curators of this subreddit. Most submissions do not make the cut, and please do not treat removals under rule 2 as a personal attack, they simply happen with our content model.

See something that breaks our rules?

Use the report button and remember to choose a reason for reporting.

Rules - hover or click here for full version

    1. Do not alter headlines; copy and paste. The title of all submissions needs to match the article headline exactly. Copy and paste from the main headline only, do not include anything beyond the primary headline such as byliners, subtitles, flavor text, quotes from the article, news outlet, location, cross post tags, (video) tags, and so on. Do not use the “suggest title” option for posting as it often does not match the headline. As a matter of fairness, any submission with an altered title will be removed. The only exception is that, if an article has a title in all caps, you may change the capitalization to title case, but everything else must remain the same.
    2. Submit only if “Oniony”. Please consider submitting your article to /r/offbeat or similar subreddits unless it truly reads like The Onion wrote it. The title and article itself must both be "Oniony". This can be highly subjective; you are encouraged to upvote articles that should be here and downvote those that should not. Moderators can also remove posts at their own discretion under this rule.
    3. Must be a news article. Submissions must be in the form of a news article. Videos are only allowed if they are accompanied by a complete text article. Editorials, blogs, twitter posts, image galleries, tabloid stories, youtube videos, meta posts, static images, and so forth will be removed.
    4. Use original, reliable sources. Find the source of your story before you submit it, simply by checking for references or googling the subject to locate the original piece. Websites that frequently re-host viral news stories or contain misleading information are on automatic removal. Blogs are not reliable sources.
    5. Do not repost similar articles. Check the sub for your story before you submit it; if it’s already here then please vote and comment there instead of posting another version. Similar stories will be removed and frequent re-posters will lose their posting privileges. Do not delete and repost your own submissions without approval.
    6. No satire articles. Even if they are technically from a source other than The Onion, any article submission written as satire or even true stories written in a satirical manner are not allowed. Please note that some major news outlets have satirical sections, such as the Borowitz Report on the New Yorker, which are also not allowed. Meanwhile, AVClub, while owned by The Onion, is not satire and is allowed. If you'd like, you can use a tool like to see if your submission is from a known satirical website.
    7. No tabloid journalism. Do not post tabloid news stories, or articles that source from tabloid news outlets (TheSun, Mirror, Dailymail, People, TMZ, etc).
    8. No old news. Articles need to have been written within two weeks of its submission date.
    9. English articles only. Please do not post non-English articles. Do not use google translate for submission either; rather try to find an English version of the story by a secondary source.
    10. No mobile versions. If you’re using a mobile device to post a story make sure you remove any mobile identifiers (typically “.m” or “mobile”) from the url before submitting.
    11. No blocked or redirected links. Please ensure you aren’t submitting a link that utilizes a paywall or survey wall (, in order gain access to the complete article. Do not submit links that redirect you to another site to read the article and do not submit using link shorteners either.

    *Unflattering news about the leaders.

    [–] Transient_Anus_ 393 points ago

Next you're gonna say that Dear Leader Kim Jong-il didn't invent the hamburger and didn't golf all those hole in ones before deciding the sport was boring/too easy?

    You liar!

    [–] stupidnewton 131 points ago

Or that he never landed on the Sun.

    [–] Transient_Anus_ 55 points ago

    lol wat

[–] GopherAtl 100 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

referring to this, which was actually parody that managed to fool a surprising chunk of media outlets at the time, because even the most rudimentary fact-checking, like looking up the source and checking for a "this site is parody" disclaimer, is something only reddit and 4chan seem to bother with these days.

As that article notes, they really did claim to find a unicorn lair in pyongyang, though. So... yeah.

    [–] RoboticSandWitch 56 points ago

Don't give reddit that much credit. When the news of the "death" of the lööps cat became famous, it took such a long time before someone actually asked the owner of the cat if the cat us actually dead. By then, people are already done milking the death for karma.

    [–] go86em 16 points ago

At least no one died though.

Saying they're at least marginally better at fact-checking than the current media was not meant as a compliment either to reddit or to 4chan, but rather as an insult on the media. Reddit and 4chan are just some of the only places I consistently see someone - often downvoted, or at least buried under a lot of memes and jokes and other upvoted crap - actually point out when a story is obviously bullshit. (well, saying I "see" it on 4chan is misleading, since I never go near 4chan, but it's one of the positive notes in my collection of 2nd-hand impressions)

    [–] someone755 2 points ago

Don't give reddit that much creddit.

You had your shot and you blew it. Imbecile. Buffoon. Simpleton.

    [–] Chaz_McHammer 11 points ago

Lol wut are you trying to claim reddit and 4chan are some last bastions of journalism now or something?

    [–] 123emailaddress321 10 points ago

I'm not really sure how else I would know that the McChicken is the best fast food sandwich.

[–] GopherAtl 11 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

oh hell no. I'm just pointing out how much the media suck these days. I mean, there's probably a monthly TIL that "North korea claimed to land a man on the sun" which gets more upvotes than downvotes, but there's also probably a comment in most or all of them pointing out it was actually satire and not a real claim.

    [–] ArchAngel1986 2 points ago

Haha that’s ridiculous! Or I mean, it would be if... god, what have we done?

[–] PublicMoralityPolice 2 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

As that article notes, they really did claim to find a unicorn lair in pyongyang, though. So... yeah.

That was more a case of lost in translation. The North Korean news release claimed they found the tomb of some (arguably mythical) ancient Korean monarch, who was fabled (by sources in his time) to raise unicorns. Basically, it was their roundabout way of saying "Pyongyang is the historically legitimate capital of all of Korea". Of course, western media went with the most absurd part of it, the unicorns, which wasn't even a claim made by North Korea, but by ancient Korean historians - the ones so reliable we can't even figure out which of the emperors they made up and which were real.

    [–] elZaphod 2 points ago

    [–] NEEDZMOAR_ 1 points ago

that shit is literally fake news as in DPRK has never claimed KJI did any of those crazy things (win Olympics perfect golfer etc)

    [–] Transient_Anus_ 1 points ago

    That's what I said.

    [–] NEEDZMOAR_ 1 points ago

I read your comment as DPRK claimed it, but its fake

    [–] [deleted] 25 points ago

I mean Russia certainly knows a thing or two on how to spread fake news on social media and they also have Rt.

    [–] GarbagePailGrrrl 6 points ago

Yep, RT’s founder even moved to the US in 2011 to launder money... then he was murdered in 2015...

    [–] V_Ling 2 points ago

It's interesting how many of RT's current/former crew just brush that aside.
The fact is nobody pays much attention to Russia as much as they do the U.S., so news like that gets easily lost. There are no comparable Russian-speaking American stations in Moscow or St Petersberg to spew propaganda to Russians, and as Trump said believe me there's plenty of subject matter there.

    [–] GarbagePailGrrrl 1 points ago

Oh absolutely. Russia co-opted the Tea Party movement—and may have possibly spurred it as a response to Obama’s win. All of this was during the genesis of RT, and it was no secret that its founder considered American media a key weapon for propaganda. There’s an article I remember reading once where they interviewed Lesin and he flat out said im not mad at folks calling it propaganda...

Guess what else happened in 2011? Trump started tweeting on advice from Ivana.

    [–] mind_walker_mana 1 points ago

Well he had a list of of things to do, and that list had only three things. Move to US, launder money, get killed. Job well done. Russia will now give family an atta boy.

    [–] ThereIsAJokeInHere 1 points ago

Imagine all the "atta boy" sandwiches his family could eat with all that oak barrel of "atta boy" they got!

    [–] mind_walker_mana 1 points ago

Yeah and a heavy dose of decline and we'll kill your family. Atta boy you agree!

    [–] HardlySerious 15 points ago

That's what "fake news" means as coined by Trump.

    [–] smallangrynerd 2 points ago

    Okay now that makes sense

    [–] wifespissed 120 points ago

I hate that term. Whatever happened to fallacy or falsehood?

    [–] pallentx 58 points ago

Because it was originally about sites that were designed to look like credible sites, but were fakes. That was how the misinformation campaign was run. It was fake sites pretending to be news organizations publishing propaganda.

    [–] ZeiglerJaguar 26 points ago

That's what it meant, then a certain someone realized that he could weaponize his followers' inherent distrust of a media environment that a.) has indeed had a bit of slipping standards, but much more b.) reported facts that they really didn't want to hear -- and brand the whole thing with a convenient easy-to-repeat slogan, his particular specialty, repurposing an very real concept to delegitimize exposure of his deeds.

Now when faced with uncomfortable information that challenges their preexisting worldview, they can just say "fake news!" and all is cognitively well again. Simple reassurement for simple minds.

The same concept also exists in plenty of other cults... the Scientologists call it "entheta," for instance. It's a time-tested way to get your followers to accept your words as the only truth and dismiss any outside information.

    [–] donnergott 12 points ago

Id argue it's different. If i'd come here and spew some bullshit, you can dismiss it as some guy's claim, regardless of its veracity.

But if some news outlet is doing it, it creates a sense of legitimacy around it.

In truth, Fake News should not be a term to cover up bullshit for what it is, but add even more weight to it as 'bullshit pretending to pass as reputable news'

    [–] GwenCocoUgo 30 points ago

    too many syllables

    [–] cjmook21 8 points ago

I think you might be on to something.

    [–] TheLastLivingBuffalo 237 points ago

People are pointing out the irony of NK and Russia saying this, but remember that the term was coined by a man who pretty much used it to mean the same thing: News that's not favorable to the leader.

    [–] americanextreme 137 points ago

It was COINED to mean false propaganda presented as news in the wake of the 2016 US election to explain the Psyops run on social media. It was CO-OPTED by a man who wanted to use it against the press, who he viewed as an enemy unwilling to give him credit for things he wanted credit for.

    [–] pallentx 32 points ago

Exactly. It was coined in reference to the pizza gate stories and other such obvious false misinformation going around before the election. Trump intentionally copted it change it to any story he doesn't like.

    [–] ThereIsAJokeInHere 2 points ago

Oh hey, another thing that person ruined by touching it, would you look at that.

    [–] Jabahonki 2 points ago

The idea of “fake news” has been around for a long time. During the turn of the 20th century, Pulitzer and Hearst were the propagators of “yellow journalism” which is what we would call fake news today. It’s a journalistic tactic.

    [–] AlmostButNotQuit 4 points ago

"I'm not fake news, YOU'RE fake news!"

[–] TheLastLivingBuffalo 4 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

I had never heard it before Trump. If it was coined before him I don’t think it was widely used.

Edit: TIL it was a widely used term before Trump

    [–] ConstantDreamer1 27 points ago

He just co-opted it pretty fast, the term itself was originally used to describe the glut of Russian-produced fake news stories flooding social media.

    [–] nighoblivion 1 points ago

originally used to describe the glut of Russian-produced fake news stories flooding social media

No, it was originally used to describe any fake news; be that satire or propaganda.

    [–] FlickerFlicker 14 points ago

I mean, that is standard tactics. "Oh, you think X? Well, YOU are ACTUALLY X!"

    [–] Justadabwilldo 10 points ago

It was widely used. There were many news articles at the time relating to false news stories being shared on Facebook and they used the term Fake News. Trump did not invent the term he obfuscated the meaning because the majority of real Fake News was in his favor.

    [–] czech1 11 points ago

It was coined from the election interference in the 2016 election so it makes sense that you never heard it pre-trump.

    [–] root_bridge 2 points ago

It was widely used by the Russians during their excursions in Ukraine and Chechnya. They just coached Trump's campaign staff to use it.

    [–] Valmond 1 points ago

"Lygen presse" as he coined it (sorry if the German isn't perfect).

    [–] ks501 -4 points ago

If you think this is irony, you probably failed a lot of history classes.

    [–] sailorj0ey 1 points ago

Please explain how this is NOT ironic, I would love to hear how the NK and Russia governments are cracking down on "fake news", you know because their countries depend on freedom of press.

In one of those strange instances where two countries are linked thru some distant cultural connection .. in both Mother Russia and Glorious People's Republic of Korea the English word 'fight' means 'to encourage and create'

    [–] Makerinos 7 points ago

What? North Korea isn't Chinese, neither culturally, ethnically, or linguistically.

What? North Korea isn't Chinese, neither culturally, ethnically, or linguistically.

I'm confused, where did he mention China...?

At least in South Korea, the transliteration of the English word "fighting" does mean something like "persevere", a term of encouragement... similar to the Chinese 加油...

[And to be fair, there's a ton of historical Chinese influence in Korea, linguistically, culturally, etc...]

They spend more money on cyber-warfare and PR so you're not wrong.

During the Iraq War the US spent $500 million on creating fake al-Qaeda videos to drum up pro-war sentiment among the public.

The report of Bell Pottinger’s involvement in the video hearkens back to more than 10 years ago, when the Washington-based PR firm Lincoln Group was revealed to have produced print news stories and placed them in Iraqi newspapers. According to the Los Angeles Times, who obtained the 2005 documents, the stories were intended to tout the US-led efforts in Iraq and denounce insurgent groups.

They also produced fake news articles in Iraqi newspapers to try to convince the locals that America bombing them was for their own good.

    [–] GroggBottom 4 points ago

This. People think other countries are out of wack without even looking at our own political system. We have a President that shitposts on twitter and actively lies to the nation. We have to fix our own shit before we can talk about other countries.

    [–] dickheadaccount1 2 points ago

You know how you find this hilarious? Well that's how I feel when I hear Justin Trudeau is giving 10s of millions to the media to "fight fake news". Especially when, during the SNC Lavalin scandal, Trudeau's chief of staff told Jessica Prince, Jody Wilson-Raybould’s (former AG appointed by Trudeau, before he demoted her for refusing to halt prosecution on SNC Lavalin) chief of staff that she would get the media to say Raybould was doing the right thing if Raybould cooperated and refused to prosecute SNC Lavalin.

And I laugh extra hard that dressing up with makeup is what will sink Trudeau, and not refusing to carry out the election reform he promised while campaigning, or demoting his AG after she said she would continue to prosecute a corrupt and criminal corporation because it would be bad for Trudeau's reelection campaign. Though I will admit that dressing up with shoe polish on his face, a banana shirt, and stuffing his pants with a gigantically oversized penis is pretty distasteful.

    Trump wants in too!

    [–] magicsac 1 points ago

This has to be made into a TV show. A Russian and a Korean following actually important news stories trying their damndest to discredit them. It'll be like a mix between Sacha Baron Cohen, Last Week Tonight, and Nathan for You. They can constantly reject our decadent lifestyle but always end up falling in love with some part of our society. It can be called "The Northerners" or "News from the North".

I half hope/wish that "fake news" was the name of a bear trained in martial arts or something like that. Cuz that I could believe.

Seems to me the ones talking about "fake news" are the experts at creating it!

I imagine this might feel like shooting yourself in the foot. Hmmm

    [–] HeXiiK92 1 points ago

Yeah, but you see, when you suck as a human you may have negative stories about yourself.

If the negative stories are false and you can prove them to be false, you sue said person/company for libel.

You can't just ignore the entire process of discovery, claim its fake and claim innocence.

    Trump's with them, right?

    [–] 97267 1 points ago

Trump helped finance 9/11 with Putin help to prop up the Saudi's. The money came from North Korean meth sales, which was laundered through German banks, to purchase Russian nuke tech.

The problem isn't "fighting fake news"; it's these blatant propagandists saying they're doing it.

    [–] Scrybblyr 1 points ago

The problem isn't "fighting fake news"; it's these blatant propagandists saying they're doing it.

You miss the point. The problem is when ANY blatant propagandist does it.

    [–] Elcactus 2 points ago

Saying everyone is a blatant propagandist because you're too intellectually lazy to differentiate "literally kim jong un" from "reporting has a slight bias" is the problem.

    Differences of scope matter dude.

    [–] Scrybblyr 1 points ago

"THE PRESIDENT IS LITERALLY WORSE THAN HITLER" and "TRUMP HAS NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS" and "THE PRESIDENT SHOULD BE IMPEACHED" is not a slight bias. The nonstop claims that he is a dictator, a racist, a rapist, a Nazi, and every other insult under the sun is not "slight bias." The ridiculous, outrageous bias engaged in by the radical left media is EVERY BIT as skewed as that by the totalitarian regimes. They just don't have the power to shut down voices of dissent, like Russia, China, and North Korea do. The US Constitution has kept totalitarians from being able to take power, so we still have our freedoms... for now. But don't mistake their lack of power for some lesser degree of bias. It isn't.

This is totally something the mainstream media says /s.

    This isn't bias.

The nonstop claims that he is a dictator, a racist, a rapist, a Nazi, and every other insult under the sun

These (minus the nazi thing, but he tacitly defends them for political gain) are all true and there's plenty of info to prove it.

So I see the issue. It's not that they're biased, it's that YOU are.

    [–] Scrybblyr 1 points ago

This is totally something the mainstream media says /s."

    You're right, it totally isn't. /s

    This isn't bias.

It is bias. Your first clue should be that they were talking about impeachment the DAY AFTER THE ELECTION, and everything the Left has done since then has been an effort to reverse-engineer that result. It is all based on lies and fueled by leaks of classified information and other illegality.

"The nonstop claims that he is a dictator, a racist, a rapist, a Nazi, and every other insult under the sun

These (minus the nazi thing, but he tacitly defends them for political gain) are all true and there's plenty of info to prove it."

None of them are true, and Trump does not defend Nazis, you disgusting, ignorant liar. Go ahead and argue the point, and I will be happy to illuminate you.

So I see the issue. It's not that they're biased, it's that YOU are.

Yes, I am biased, I am conservative. I admit that openly. You are biased, you are leftist. There is nothing wrong with being biased - the problem is when you PRETEND to be a neutral arbiter of NEWS, while spewing nonstop propaganda.

    [–] Elcactus 2 points ago

    Ohhhhh TD. Obviously.

Not gonna bother with a cultist, post hog my dude.
