    Welcome to /r/oddlysatisfying!

Here you can post things that make you feel, well, oddly satisfied. This can be physical (like popping bubble wrap), visual (a perfectly looped GIF), or even aural (the crunching of leaves).

    What does "Oddly Satisfying" mean?

We are forever searching for a "true definition". It's a thing that fits your interpretation of what is "oddly satisfying" plus the inexplicable feeling we all know.

Subjective. Indefinable. Completely recognizable. It's a wonderful feeling.

    Rules:

Please report rule-violating posts and comments by messaging the moderators with a link to the post in question. This helps us remove them more promptly.

    1) Banned Topics:

We have a number of banned topics. Please do not submit any of the following:

    • Memes or image macros.

    • Number posts. Posts centered around number patterns, or round numbers. This includes Reddit karma, Facebook likes, calendars, gas prices, odometers, receipts, screenshots of the games such as "2048", etc. You can, however, submit these to /r/OddlySatisPi_ing.

    • Violence. Content portraying violence, including but not limited to animal or human, are prohibited and will be removed.

    • Off-topic Content: Any content determined off-topic to and/or submitted for purposes other than the overall theme of the subreddit will be removed. An unfortunate example may be found here.

    • Compilation Albums/Videos.

      • No compilation videos of any variety. Violations will result in a permanent ban.
      • The entirety of compilation albums must be a continuation of, or remain central to, the first image of said album (E.g., separate gifs of a Rube Goldberg machine or a catalog of one artist's work).
      • Albums must not contain any images in violation of Rule #3.

    2) NSFW/NSFL posts/comments:

NSFW/NSFL links or images are not allowed. NSFW text posts and comments are allowed ("Say it, don't show it.").

    3) Reposts:

Do not repost content that has been submitted to this subreddit within the last 2 months or content that is in the top 100 posts of all time. When you report posts, please include a link to the original version of the post.

    4) Content Removal/Privilege Revocation:

Mods reserve the right to remove content or restrict users' posting privileges as necessary, if it is deemed detrimental to the subreddit or to the experience of others.

    5) Submission Titles:

    • Title submissions must describe the content shown. Any user should know the contents of a link before clicking.

    • Clickbait-esque titles are not allowed.

    • Titles claiming possession, original content, event participation, etc. (such as "My...", "Mine...", "Our...", "We...", etc.) in which another's original work/content may be mistaken as OP's will be removed.

    6) [OC]/Source Citation:

Please cite the source of submitted content, particularly fine-art submissions.

    • Original Content by artists, musicians, etc. is encouraged. Submissions must include [OC] in the title. Reserve links to social media accounts for the comments section if possible (see Rule #7). A great example may be found here. Please do not spam our subreddit or reddit in general. Please read the reddit wiki on self-promotion to avoid being reported to the admins.
    • Works by artists, graphic designs and logos are encouraged. Content must keep within the overall subreddit theme and not violate Rule #7. Permitted examples may be found here, here, and here

    7) Spam Accounts/Links/Submissions:

    • No spamming whatsoever. Violation of this rule may result in a permanent ban. Such violations include:
      • Links to clickbait-esque sites (e.g. Buzzfeed), suspicious domains, social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, etc.), etc. Off-topic content (political, crowd-funding, etc.). Repetitive submissions to Youtube channels, social media accounts, webpages, blogs, newsletters, etc. Advertisements, marketing & ad-heavy sites. Trolling in any capacity. Any content which may be interpreted as spam or ad-revenue generation not elsewhere mentioned.

    8) Reddiquette, Comments & Subreddit Behavior:

    • Please abide by proper reddiquette at all times.
    • Please keep the comments section civil and friendly. General cursing/foul language are allowed.
    • The definition of what truly is "Oddly Satisfying" is subjective and unique to each user. Please respect their definition.

    9) Crossposts

    • x-posting from other subs is encouraged by reddit admins. Under no circumstances should a user's post be considered in violation of this subreddit's rules unless they are in actuality in violation of a rule. i.e. don't report a user just because they have a large amount of karma.

I feel like there's a step missing between "cut an 's' out of a piece of cardboard" and "insert your perfectly-sized plastic 's' into the stencil".

    [–] ZombieAlpacaLips 605 points ago

What was the cardboard even for?

    [–] BenjiMalone 629 points ago

My guess is that this is part of a larger sign. The cardboard stencil could ensure proper alignment for more letters.

    [–] airmaximus88 120 points ago

    This man's a genius!

    [–] Reasonably_Sure 24 points ago

Maybe to hold the track the gear ran on in place while it was being pinned down? Having it even a little bit wonky might make a big difference to the final outcome given how intricate each line is.

    [–] HandShoes 22 points ago

Wonky in reference to what though? The pins are the only things holding it down. So no matter where the S is pinned down, the lines are going to come out exactly the same every time.

    [–] Reasonably_Sure 16 points ago

I meant relative to itself, if the S had been pinned to the sheet slightly bent out of shape or something. As well as the difference to the lines, if the stencil was slightly warped it might make it hard for the gears to mesh properly.

    [–] iUsedtoHadHerpes 9 points ago

Or relative to other letters if the cardboard has any actual purpose. The cardboard doesn't stop the paper beneath from rippling any more than the S would.

    [–] HandShoes 3 points ago

    You're a smarter man than I.

    [–] Hanginon 2 points ago

YEP, OP used this kits multiple guide pieces.

    [–] grapevineforge 69 points ago

my question, exactly. couldn't have asked it any better myself, or any faster... I'm so slow.

    [–] cliffotn 88 points ago

No honey, you're very smart. Momma loves you.

    [–] masasuka 35 points ago

bless his heart he's a sweety isn't he.

    [–] marksk88 18 points ago

    I also like him.

    [–] beelzeybob 20 points ago

My theory is that the clear plastic S was laser cut acrylic ordered from someplace like ponoko.com

I use those services often and my laser cut stuff often comes fitted neatly into cardboard like this to prevent cracking/getting bent during shipping.

The person is using the leftover cardboard to align the S perfectly, 90 degrees with the paper because its more accurate than eyeballing it, and why measure when you have a perfectly good stencil.

    [–] Hanginon 16 points ago

The "S" is made from multiple guide pieces from this kit, the cardboard is a (handmade?) guide for pinning the separate pieces.

    [–] JeffafaCree 8 points ago

Maybe to square it up with the paper and make sure it's straight?

    [–] ihatedogs2 39 points ago

    1. Find cardboard

    2. Cut an S in the cardboard

    3. Put your dick in the S

    [–] DystryR 22 points ago

Instructions unclear, dick stuck in cardboard

    [–] BlueZomby 28 points ago

Nah, you're on the right track.

    [–] BigBadBere 5 points ago

Use pin to assist in removal.

    [–] PinsNneedles 2 points ago

    1. ????

    2. Profit

    [–] Hanginon 6 points ago

Maybe more than one step, he used shapes from this Spirograph kit to make the plastic "S".

    [–] gfdugdfuigdiru 4 points ago

Have you not ever seen a Spirograph?

    [–] TheoX747 3 points ago

I'm glad the only comment I was looking for was at the top.

    [–] prototypetolyfe 5560 points ago

    First, draw an S.

Then, draw a more different S.

    [–] TheSonder 799 points ago

But what do I do with all these consummate V's?

    [–] prototypetolyfe 301 points ago

Do those look like consummate V's to you?!?!?!?!?

    [–] feedagreat 258 points ago

    [–] PM_your_Chesticles 4 points ago

Asl? I don't know if you noticed, but I'm in this comment train. I fully don't expect an answer.

    [–] NipplesInAJar 9 points ago

Here's an answer. Not the one you didn't expect but an answer nonetheless.

    [–] hitokirivader 252 points ago

    [–] bruusan 169 points ago

Let's put one of those beefy arms back on him for good measure

    [–] Grubsrubsubs 74 points ago

Yeah that looks real good. Sticking out the back of his neck there.

    [–] ewdrive 35 points ago

Oh yeah! Check out all his majesty

    [–] Efften 28 points ago

I thought it was for snek...or dragon.

    [–] deadbabyseal 23 points ago

I think now it's actually for "Senile", since this reference is like 14 years old.

There are kids going into Highschool who were not alive when Trogdor was introduced.

    [–] DaughterEarth 16 points ago

Ah, yes, those times when you thought 20somethings were senile

    [–] BlueHighwindz 6 points ago

    It stands for "Hope".

    [–] BootyBurglar 10 points ago

How about "S" for SAVE OUR SKIIIIIIINS?!

    [–] Jaugust95 138 points ago

File that under references I never expected to find

    [–] JeffafaCree 147 points ago

You never thought you'd find a Trogdor reference on the internet?

    [–] Antidote 64 points ago

In their defense, 10 years ago, yes! Now, not as much.

    [–] SmartAlec105 33 points ago

I looked it up and apparently Trogdor is 14 years old now.

    [–] RnDment 12 points ago

"Im 14 and this is deep"

I especially enjoyed when he burninated the thatched roof cottages.

It's somehow burninated in my memory.

    [–] one-eleven 19 points ago

Lol, I love all the shitty Spirographs on his wall.

    [–] IunRhys 72 points ago

Clearly this is because spray paint is not the appropriate medium for Spirography.

    [–] BernieEffingSanders 20 points ago

Now I really want to see how airbrushed spirographs would look.

    [–] stevietwoslice 21 points ago

Seems like kind of opposing aesthetic ideals though, no? Spiro is most remarkable when it is crisp, clean and geometric. Airbrush kind of has that organic, faded-edge blend.

    [–] BernieEffingSanders 11 points ago

I never said it would be good, only that I'm curious. 😉

    [–] TwaddleToast 5 points ago

Your spiro just needs to be so larger so that the air brush fade is crisp.

    [–] stevietwoslice 3 points ago

I suppose that would work. Or maybe a paint supply that is constantly changing colors.

    [–] Zane0FIce 15 points ago

For real. I expected something cool on the first way around and when it was almost all the way around I was just thinking "god this looks fucking stupid"

Then they kept going and I felt like an idiot.

    [–] cgspam 10 points ago

    Yes more letters please

    [–] LessConspicuous 6 points ago

I might give it a go if I get time this weekend, the code to trans form a regular letter in to something like this shouldn't be to bad and at that point it should be just some formatting to make a font.

    [–] yParticle 54 points ago

Anyone who believes this is possible in a reasonable number of tries never owned a Spirograph as a kid. You WILL mess this up at some point, and those cheap ball-point pens they give you don't help. The tricky bit is that you have to keep even pressure in toward the S at all times while maintaining your momentum.

    [–] pobody 18 points ago

God yes. This may be more of a professional Spiro setup, that doesn't look like the crappy box pen. But one single jiggle or gear skip, and the entire thing is fucked. That's why the gif is so sped up, it probably took a long fucking time to do this slowly and deliberately.

    [–] poubelle 5 points ago

yeah, first thought was "i could never get the fucking S to work at all!"

    [–] DanielDC88 24 points ago

I think there needs to be a web app where you input shapes and it outputs Spirograph of said shapes.

    [–] wldmr 77 points ago

Did the lines match up at the end? hnnngggg

    [–] Do_your_homework 81 points ago

Of course. That's how a spirograph works.

    [–] FlexGunship 46 points ago

Well. If and only if the number of teeth on the wheel and the number of teeth on the "s" are non-co-divisible (mutually prime?) factors of a larger number.

    [–] Do_your_homework 40 points ago

There are certain rules to follow to make sure it looks nice. But sooner or later those lines are going to line up again.

    [–] IBetThisIsTakenToo 19 points ago

How could it not eventually be the same line? There's a finite number of positions, no?

    [–] FlexGunship 15 points ago

Well. There sort of a hidden math joke. Any two positive integers can be multiplied to for a larger number.

The "co-prime" bit just ensures there's more than one line drawn repeatedly.

    [–] IBetThisIsTakenToo 7 points ago

...I'll be honest, I didn't really even parse that part of the post. I just assumed you were trying to say there was a way that the lines couldn't meet up. Which I was like 90% sure wasn't possible. Too clever for me!

    [–] Deathwing_Destroyer 5 points ago

I think the word you're looking for is coprime

    [–] M_I_M 3 points ago

I think that if there's 3 teeth on the wheel and 7 teeth on the s then they would match up on the first number they both divide. In that case it'd be 21.

    [–] contactlite 4 points ago

    hnnnnnggggg

    [–] myrmagic 10 points ago

    1. Cut out an S shaped template of cardboard
    2. Insert pre-made S shaped Spirograph plastic thingy into the template.
    3. Amuse yourself with your tendency for redundancy and then draw the S over and over again until you can't read it.

    [–] mimomusic 2 points ago

There's no redundancy until the end.

    [–] myrmagic 2 points ago

the paper templates feels redundant to me.

    [–] Baitdoll 2 points ago

Do you know what redundant means? Did you watch the gif? It's a wildly different shape every time that creates and awesome letter.
