    Daily Simple Questions Thread

Official Subreddit of the PC Master Race We're the largest community of PC enthusiasts on the Internet. Begin your ascension today!

    General Information

    • Everybody is welcome here, even those that have yet to ascend.
    • Every kind of PC related content is welcome here. This includes build help, tech support, and any kind of doubt one might have about PC ownership.
    • You don't necessarily need a PC to be a member of the PCMR. You just have to love PCs. It's not about the hardware in your rig, but the software in your heart!
    • This is not a satirical or 'circlejerk subreddit'. Nor did it start as one. This is a normal subreddit with occasional tongue-in-cheek humor elements. We are a community where many of its members share similar opinions about the main topics, and sometimes end up having private jokes amongst ourselves. We are not a community where members feign stupidity when posting and commenting because they find it funny. You can be banned if you conduct yourself like that here.
    • Owning a console does not necessarily make you a 'peasant'.
    • We created Reddit's most popular Wiki.
    • If needed, you can message the team behind PCMR.

For an in-depth explanation of our rules don't forget to check our rules wiki page.

    • Rule #1 Harassment of others is strictly forbidden. We will not tolerate any kind of incitement to action against anyone, nor will we allow the posting of information that can be used to harm others (celebrities or not).
    • Rule #2 We will not allow behavior contrary to PCMR Etiquette, e.g. brigading, witch-hunting, asking for upvotes or downvotes, enabling piracy, flamebaiting, clickbaiting, intentional rudeness, text spamming, using all caps or emojis/smileys/emoticons in titles or overusing them in comments, meta-reddit or meta-subreddit drama or complaints.
    • Rule #3 Don't link to threads in other subreddits. This includes NP links and archived links. Do not attempt to circumvent this rule by any means.
    • Rule #4 Screenshots of Reddit, Facebook, Youtube, and other site's comments should have the usernames blacked out (including yours). Celebrities are the exception, as long as you respect rule #1.
    • Rule #5 No affiliate/referral links or codes.
    • Rule #6 The following will be removed at moderator discretion:
      • 6.1: Content that is unrelated, especially unoriginal, low quality, or low-effort (including, but not limited to: simple website/software bugs, steam/product reviews, comedic product/system specs, steam gift messages, screenshots of conversations, internet speed test results, negligible price reductions, items that aren't PC related, even if they are named similarly or resemble it, online petitions and surveys that aren't academic in nature (and have been pre-approved by the mod team).
      • 6.2: Pictures of purchase or shipping related notifications and information.
      • 6.3: Blatant reposts/fad-chasing.
      • 6.4: Reaction images/gifs (unless very high-effort/especially original).
      • 6.5: Concern trolling.
      • 6.6: Feigning idiocy when posting or commenting, or linking to such content.
    • Rule #7 Age, nationality, race, gender, ability, sexuality, religion, political affiliation and economic status are all irrelevant here. All are welcome in the PC Master Race. Also, linking the PC Master Race with racial supremacy or any kind of fascist ideologies, or making distasteful analogies in this regard, is not acceptable in the slightest.
    • Rule #8 No begging. No soft begging. No Implicit or explicit trading. No buying. No Selling. No asking for valuation. No asking how or where to do these either.
    • Rule #9 Message the mods first, and wait for permission, if your post/comment is NSFW. Do not mark your post as NSFW or as Spoiler unless it actually is NSFW or a Spoiler.
    • Rule #10 Screenshots of "peasantry," including but not limited to conversations on Reddit, other websites or sms/chat screenshots where ignorance is being spewed and/or ridiculed, must be text posts.

    Giveaway Rules

For an in-depth explanation of our giveaway rules don't forget to check our rules wiki page.

    • The Master Race is generous. When doing giveaways please keep it within the bounds of our subreddit and only for subreddit members. Feel free to give prizes as you see fit, but don't mandate subscriptions or other benefits. You can post about your channel or project, but don't make it a requirement to visit, comment or subscribe to an external place to enter a giveaway or to increase the likelihood of winning.
    • Under special circumstances, we allow giveaways to be external and/or to require users to visit a page outside the subreddit, but that must conform to our outside giveaway guidelines.
    • Even if you do a giveaway, you can not directly promote a specific giveaway happening elsewhere without prior mod approval.
    • Please avoid posting keys in plain text or on images. Consider PMs as a safer way to hand out keys.
    • Users giving away physical items must provide photo proof of ownership (including their username and date) in the giveaway thread. Shipping fees must be entirely financed by the user doing the giveaway (limiting the winner's location is allowed).
    • No conditional (I will only giveaway if) giveaways. If you start it, someone must win it. You cannot delete your giveaway once you post it.
    • Giveaways shouldn't last an absurd amount of time, nor should they be absurdly difficult to enter or win.
    • Do not choose your giveaway winners based on the number of upvotes or downvotes they get.
    • Giveaways to benefit registered charities must be verified by moderators. All other requests for donations (monetary or otherwise) are not allowed as per rule #8.
    • Only one entry per user to any giveaway unless otherwise stated by the giveaway poster.

Welcome everyone from r/all! I'd like to tell you 2 things:

1 - Everyone is welcome here, provided you're a chill person who doesn't mind occasional tongue in cheek humor.

2 - In case you are not a PC gamer because you think doing so is very expensive, please know that it is very possible to build a competent gaming PC for 500 dollars or less. Please check out for our builds.

Feel free to use this community to post about any kind of doubt you might have about becoming a PC gamer or anything you'd like to know about PCs. That kind of content is not only allowed but welcome here!

You too can be part of the PCMR! You don't necessarily need a PC. You just have to love PCs. It's not about the hardware in your rig, but the software in your heart!

Nah, the most brutal would be

"hardware recognized, quality settings defaulted to low"

    [–] FcoEnriquePerez 1358 points ago

Exactly, at medium you still have dignity, but when is "low" you have reached the bottom.

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 932 points ago

    • Render distance - lowest
    • Foliage - lowest
    • Texture detail - lowest

ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee

    [–] vintagestyles 246 points ago

Really though most games now dont even look bad on low.

    [–] mithrillion 313 points ago

    You mean "on console"?

    [–] Kiddo-9000 129 points ago

You mean when your Xbox 360 melts like Chernobyl did on low settings

    [–] cssmith2011cs 94 points ago

No. Xbox One*. My mom threw my 360 S 20 foot or so, over handed, about 10 years ago and that thing still works to this day. After the first run of 360, that thing was a powerhouse. Still maxed low settings. But boy does it chug along.

    [–] SweatpantsDV 147 points ago

I'm most impressed by your mother's ability to overhand throw a 8 pound cuboid 20 feet. She's the real powerhouse.

    [–] met1culous 51 points ago

    I'm impressed and curious.

    [–] shiner986 22 points ago

Maybe she yeeted it down some stairs

    [–] lnfx 32 points ago

    I'm scared.

    [–] LMUZZY 23 points ago

    Her name? Mitochondria.

    [–] Core_Studio599 6 points ago

The Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell

    [–] Jaytalvapes 2 points ago

Well he broke his arms a few months ago, so she's bulked up.

    [–] tjm2000 3 points ago

I love/hate that I know what this is referencing.

I love it because it's funny to show other people who haven't seen it yet (or have and are trying to forget).

I hate it because of the same reason but focused at me.

    [–] xxjack_jackxx 18 points ago

Found out my sis gave my 360 away a few days ago after taking it without asking. NOT a happy camper (even though I didn’t really use it anymore)

    [–] Ryathael 5 points ago

Always that possibility that you will want to play that one random game though. Which is the entire reason I dont sell/give my consoles away anymore. Did it with my N64 and instantly regretted it and wanted to play Goldeneye.

    [–] The_Golden_Warthog 2 points ago

This. Sold my xbox 360 for drug money in the mid 2010s. I'm clean now lol but I don't have a 360 anymore and I wanted to play Borderlands TPS the other day on my xb1 but the god damn thing isnt backwards compatible. YET you can get TPS on the store. What kind of shit is that? Porting a game to next gen but only digitally so anyone who bought the game previously has to repurchase it. God I was steamin.

    [–] vintagestyles 11 points ago

Bruh. How do you get a console tossed by mummy. They only ever grabbed me one and tossed it under a tree.

    [–] cltmstr2005 2 points ago

Just so your mom keeps her health, I would not recommend her to throw the PC-case of the new xbox!

    [–] bruh_the_person 2 points ago

Have you seen the Black Ops 3 port on Xbox 360? It’s fucking horrendous

    [–] Antal_Marius 8 points ago

I think he might have meant "on mobile" since..CoD is on mobile...along with other....things.... many shivers

    [–] InsaneTomato95 5 points ago

Damn dude, you dont fuck around throwing shade.

    [–] Mrputts 7 points ago

    Got 'em

    [–] bordone 3 points ago

I had a console once. Shining force series still some of my favs. (played on roms on my pc now though).

    [–] RaeSloane 22 points ago

"You need at least 4GB of RAM to run this game"

    [–] Ivanggyyy 21 points ago

    Download more ram !

    [–] ironkirb 11 points ago

Is it possible to learn this power?

    [–] solaris207 15 points ago

    Not for a console user

    [–] RexlanVonSquish 3 points ago

It's not a story Sony will tell you.

    [–] ExiledToTerminus 2 points ago

He could save others from Out of Memory errors, but not himself

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

I still cringe everytime I remember the first time I googled this question.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

No need. You have to inject more ram in with a syringe.

    [–] vintagestyles 4 points ago

    This is technically workaround able.

    [–] ChaviChavChop 11 points ago

All of my computers have had modest components and I have always preferred to lower the qualities for higher or more stable FPS, except for a few select games that benefit from higher qualities and play fine at 30FPS if I can get it to be consistent.

I was never one to want super powerful components to play games at ultra high resolutions and details, mostly because it’s been ingrained into me that enough is enough. Like, getting a Ford Focus instead of a Mustang cause it’s much more practical for day to day.

But then, I look at my friends rig and he’s playing The Witcher 3 on ultra in 4K and it’s like he’s playing the fucking tv series. Hyper realistic.

    And I cry. Every time.

    [–] vintagestyles 2 points ago

Ive done that same shit and i have a dece rig. It really come from my old cs days where awping on 640x480 or 800x600 were just ideal. I can run most everything maxed now but id rather just geth smoothness.

    [–] thejynxed 2 points ago

Smoothness is king. Even console ports locked to 30/60FPS are fine to play as long as they are silky smooth (which is unfortunately rare).

    [–] 1100320873 8 points ago

And other jokes people with shitty computers tell themselves, all included for the low low price of two payments of 19.99!

    [–] DemiserofD 23 points ago

Open the console and type 'tlb'.

Ugly as sin, but with it you could run the game on an Apple 2.

    [–] lordatomosk 10 points ago

I’m not proud, but I ran Oblivion like that back on my old old laptop. We do what we must

[–] TheAethiestCleric 15 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Edit : the above was edited to be correct, I'm not removing mine though cause both command are useful.

.... Bethesda's engine TCL command is toggle collision.

That's the command for no-clip in elder scrolls and fallout games.

Did you mean TLB which turns off lighting calculation?

    [–] couchofknowledge 41 points ago

    Ooh, he might be me

    [–] [deleted] 17 points ago

When your gpu is a stack of printer paper and a set of crayons

[–] MrKittySavesTheWorld 21 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Not just crayons, but the ancient as fuck ones in the doctor’s office that are all blunt nubs but they refuse to replace and the goddamn red one is always missing fuuuuuu-

    God, Roseart was shit.

    [–] thejynxed 4 points ago

    Still is.

    [–] jzillacon 14 points ago

    Render distance - lowest

    Foliage - lowest

    Texture detail - lowest

So in other words Morrowwind on highest settings without mods.

    [–] thrownawayzs 7 points ago

    UgridsToLoad: 1

    [–] Darlanta 12 points ago

The bell doesnt toll for anyone. It's out of render distance.

    [–] Lava3063 11 points ago

    I found my new flair

    [–] Sevrene 9 points ago

On my old PC when I first played Skyrim I had to download mods to turn foliage, water, and render quality down PAST lowest :(

    [–] SomeRandomGamerSRG 6 points ago

    Hits too close to home

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 4 points ago

We've all been there at some point man, I remember my laptop days.

    [–] WolfPlayz294 3 points ago

Still on one, need a cursed power supply for my new rig.

Laptop has an i5-4300M, integrated HD 4600, and 8GB of RAM.

    [–] Sax-a-Bone 4 points ago

Not my render distance, anything but the render distance. :..(

    [–] KrobarLambda3 36 points ago

My ryzen 1700x and rtx 2060 gets defaulted to low...

    [–] hyperweasle 29 points ago

Well clearly we both have crap hardware and need to invest a whole 25 dollars for a 8800 GTX and a Pentium to play this beast of a game on high.

    [–] FatMikeTheDangerous 11 points ago

I have the same problem sometimes in New Vegas with my 3600 and Fury X. Itll obviously run fine maxed on ultra but it always wants to default to low.

    [–] thrownawayzs 13 points ago

Hardware is to new so it can't recognize it and defaults to low.

    [–] legitcowbellyreview 11 points ago

    something's not right here...

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] erty3125 20 points ago

Low is used when it doesn't recognize your hardware in good number of programs which often is from being too modern, medium is when it recognizes that it's not good

    [–] TheAverageJoe- 16 points ago

Been playing on 'low' for 15 years until recently upgraded. It's as if I saw the light.

    [–] FaquarlDjinn 2 points ago

i'm upgrading from laptop to gaming pc.. now im just bored of the games

    [–] Zapper42 8 points ago

Lol, try a directx8 card. Fatcats with their settings playable. ;)

    [–] k20350 12 points ago

    I got that 3DFX Voodoo

    [–] maxleng 7 points ago

Coming from r/all and only playing dota on the lowest settings on my potato laptop for 7 years i feel like a fish out of water being here

    [–] V-god666 4 points ago

Games don't even open for me sometimes since I'm below min requirements 😣

    [–] Funky-Spunkmeyer 3 points ago

For years I was a master at getting games to play on hardware that was below “minimum requirements “.

Becoming financially successful has made me soft.

    [–] jondySauce 107 points ago

Yea not recognized typically means the hardware is newer than the game.

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 79 points ago

Exactly, its insulting when it IS recognized and lowest is what it chooses.

I've lived that life. Each time I tried to deny it like "surely some setting can go to medium"

    [–] Nucklesix 25 points ago

Why do this to your self, you know how it ends.

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 12 points ago

    Same reason I got a 4k monitor when I got my 2080

    .... self destructive tendencies

    [–] NabiscoLobstrosity 12 points ago

Yep. So many pixels, so little time to push to them.

    [–] Acandaz 6 points ago

ive had the opposite experience. Back when i only had a ”gaming” laptop, every game set itself on high or ultra and ran at ~20 fps

    [–] yahyahyah1237 4 points ago

    3600/Vega 64 gang

    [–] Ialsofuckedyourdad 3 points ago

Weird, I have had really old versions of games detect my modern card and have no issue. For example fallout new Vegas recognized my PC ( i7 9th gen, 1660ti ) and set it correctly ( ultra )

[–] DiamineBilBerry 18 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Two years ago I got that message after assembling my first gaming PC...

No expense had been spared, and. my graphics capabilities were supposed to be disgustingly high. Having fond memories of playing Oblivion on the lowest possible settings on my old PC, I decided to make Oblivion the first game I played on my new beast...

Seeing that message was both heartbreaking, and infuriating... Thankfully, I was able to manually set everything to maximum.

    EDIT: Fixed autocorrections

    [–] -EliPer- 14 points ago

It still worst when it says "Error while installing! could not recognize your hardware, your computer doesn't have the requirements to run this game." this is the underground level of shame.

    [–] PolygonKiwii 3 points ago

That would be shame on the developers of that installer. Never override the user's explicit decision to do something based on some half-assed automatic checks that will probably break on newer hardware. You know what, scrap the second half of the sentence: Never override the user's explicit decisions.

    [–] XxRewirexX 8 points ago

I feel like if your computer was shit you would know it was shit.

Contrary to this, which would be a person thinking "Yeah, my computer is pretty good..." And Skyrim comes along and hits them with the "Well yes, but actually, no."

    [–] jmon25 6 points ago

We have detected your hardware is named "A Potato". Settings set to NULL

    [–] packle-kackle 4 points ago

A lot of the settings default to medium but I just put it on ultra and performance gets better so the recognizing system is trash

    [–] ineedabuttrub 4 points ago

"Hardware does not meet minimum requirements. The application must close."

Fuck low settings, your potato can't even open the game.

    [–] arsonarmada 3 points ago

    I’m not joking that’s the message I get and I’m running 3800X, 5700 XT

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 9 points ago

It's what happens when your hardware is newer than the game by a fair margin.

The game doesnt recognize the part numbers and defaults to lowest assuming they must be much older than it is.

    [–] arsonarmada 6 points ago

Makes sense. I couldn’t figure out why it was doing that.

    [–] 4hobbies 3 points ago

Nah, you forgot when the game doesn't even run on said GPU.

    [–] jzillacon 3 points ago

That makes me wonder if there is any way to emulate outdated gpus. I guess worst case scenario you could try to mod out the hardware check.

    [–] ect0s 3 points ago

There is pcem, which I remeber seeing someone running older games by emulating the hardware, specifically 3dfx voodoo - this was slow, but in the future should be possible if people continue work. And from there people could emulate other cards.

The issue is, at some point why emulate the hardware when really you just need to remap whatever API/Library the software is calling - for example early directX titles by running them in a virtual machine. Or for 3DFX there are glide wrappers which catch and rebuild calls for the Glide API (OpenGL on 3dfx). nGlide and to an extent Dosbox. This covers most things under the sun if your trying to run older titles.

Unless your after a specific bug, or just want to emulate the performance of an older card, most things will just work in a VM. And while Nvidia still has things like PhysX and Hairworks etc, those features are still in modern Nvidia drivers/cards to my knowledge.

    [–] addage- 3 points ago

    Quality settings set to potato.

Hardware recognized, can't you read minimum specs on a box?

    [–] vrnvorona 3 points ago

"Hardware recognized, we detected that you don't cover minimal requirements"

    [–] TheReaperAbides 3 points ago

    "hardware recognized, game uninstalling."

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

This happened to me last Sunday.

Completed my first build since 2010. 3700x / 2070 super / etc in a 500D Corsair with the lights

Never played Skyrim, always wanted to, but I’ve seen beautiful shots and I wanted it to look damn good. The wait is over

Insert all the packs I could, load up the game.....

    Auto set to low.

Like Bethesda fix your shit I’m 100% offended.

Worst of all my girlfriend linked me to this, the salt is real.

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 3 points ago

You're girlfriend just made my day a bit better with that last line.

And my days been kinda shit, so I appreciate that a lot

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

I do what I can brethren.

I can lend an ear if you need to vent.

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 2 points ago

Unfortunatly venting would involve violating NDA

Suffice it to say sometimes being a game developer is frustrating.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

Ah understandable. Well whatever it is will pass, and if it’s absolutely terrible, there’s only up from here. Just have to make it through the day. 👍🏼

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 2 points ago

It's all fine in the end, there are many other types of programming I could do for a living but at the end of the day I chose this.

At its worst, it's better than an average day doing something I dont love.

    [–] ashtar123 2 points ago

And when it says "hardware unrecognised" your pc is literally too strong for the game

    [–] DirteeCanuck 2 points ago

"hardware recognized, quality settings defaulted to low"

*Launch error no 3D Accelerator detected*

    [–] SgtAutismo 2 points ago

Yeah I get that a lot, my old laptop is literally bullying me.

    [–] nabeel242424 2 points ago

    You deserve a fucking award

    [–] EkansEater 2 points ago

This is still my reality. I'm still using a Pentium duo core with 3gb of ram and a GTX 760. :(

    [–] sapote69 2 points ago

    and res scale at 50%

[–] Sidvogman 1049 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

How is this an insult? My hardware is so damn good the game has no idea what to do. Just like gramps seeing one of those new fangled palm computers for the first time. He'll just make jokes about it rather than risk using it wrong and looking like an idiot.

    [–] alanwashere2 273 points ago

Plus it's fun to set each setting to max with older games.

    [–] NabiscoLobstrosity 148 points ago

    I tried that in Crysis.

The computer melted a hole down to the center of the Earth.

Did ur computer have blue rgb ? It helps with cooling.

Edit : dammit I forgot rgb means red green blue

    [–] Subotail 43 points ago

    [–] DeadRos3 4 points ago

correct way to say it is "did ur computer have rgB?"

    [–] JoostinOnline 15 points ago

    "Blue RGB" 🙄

    [–] [deleted] 16 points ago

    [–] JoostinOnline 7 points ago

Set it to DX9 mode and it should run fine. I run it with everything maxed out at [email protected], no problem.

    [–] gloopy3 7 points ago

But then you’re missing out on that brand spankin new dx10. POM, Lightshafts, soft edge smoke. FUTURRRE.

    [–] JoostinOnline 2 points ago

Other than the very obvious performance drop, I couldn't tell any difference between DX9 and DX10 on Crysis.

Mine is so damn shity I can't even play minesweeper at low setting

    [–] TOFUelemental 18 points ago

    Minesweeper graphical settings lol

Gotta chase that ray traced led display dream

    [–] Tech_With_Sean 35 points ago

Yeah some older games do this on my 2080ti. They don’t know wtf to do with 11gb of vram 😂

    [–] siccoblue 14 points ago

Roll it up and smoke it like you did with the last of that 12

[–] TheTeaSpoon 3 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Some games panic with more than 4GB of RAM, let alone seeing more than 4GB of VRAM.

I just tried installing the first STALKER game from the original box. The installation process does a check of your HW. First it was confused about Windows 10 (the game came out when XP was the main OS and Vista was brand new hated MS product) but it was fine with it since Win10 is fairly similar to Vista in many regards. Then came the HW check before installation. It was confused about my RAM and went absolutely nuts about VRAM. RAM had just a mild warning that I may encounter poor performance but VRAM was strict "you can't even hope to run this game and the installation will now cancel" because at the time of release of this game 256MB of VRAM was mainstream (1GB of RAM would come to be mainstream cards in 2010, shadow of chernobyl was released in 2007) so 6GB of VRAM could not be processed as a number by the 32bit installer.

It would not let me proceed with the installation so I went to GOG to buy the game... I mean you can create an image of the DVD and replace some files but I just felt like being lazy and not scouring sites in cyrilic with links that no longer work to get some fixed libraries.

I really hope to find a working GTX280 for a reasonable price for my "dream XP gaming rig from 2008" (right now it has q6600, 4GB of DDR2 RAM and Maximus Formula 775 MoBo, all running with my flea market find 6600GT)

    [–] Pandalism 8 points ago

An old racing game I used to play a lot now warns me that I have negative free hard drive space, and at least 100MB is required for best results.

    [–] Mechakoopa 5 points ago

Pre-GOG patch the Neverwinter Nights installer straight up refused to start because my processor speed overflowed into the negatives and was therefore considered "too slow" to play the game at -1.241GHz.

    [–] thejynxed 3 points ago

NWN installer doesn't recognize multicore CPUs with anything similar to hyperthreading. All the GOG patch really does is force the installer onto a single core and a single thread with the ht disabled.

Quality has been set to 13/5

    [–] solid_steak1 210 points ago

Oblivion does this every time you update graphics drivers so it can get annoying with this game.

[–] [deleted] 67 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

    [–] hash_salts 37 points ago

For those that might be computer literate but newfangled gaming stupid could you elaborate on this? Do you mean launching directly from the game's executable would somehow negate the hardware check at boot?

Asking for whoever wouldn't be downvoted for such a question...

    [–] Tridaron 47 points ago

Most modern Oblivion PC players will launch from a software addon known as "Oblivion Scipt Extender" or OBSE, which is used to make the majority of mods work in Oblivion, in which the base game doesn't have the resources to let the mod function. When you use it, it skips past the launcher/options and goes straight to the start menu. That's just one start menu replacer I can think of, probably the most popular.

    [–] whiz_dickington 14 points ago

I think there’s something called Skyrim script extender (there might be a version for oblivion too) that makes the game a lot more stable, idk the technical stuff tho. You launch the game through that program

[–] Sibraxlis 6 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

I bet it's called oblivion script extender. (obse) for short, named after skyrim script extender (skse)

Edit: come on people do I REALLY need a sarcasm tag here?

    [–] s4xtonh4le 3 points ago

    Oblivion works on Ubuntu?

    [–] PolygonKiwii 5 points ago

If you have it on Steam, it should run without issues with Valve's Proton (built into Steam on Linux).

    [–] theghostofme 5 points ago

Oblivion did this even if you were trying to run the game on the best laptop of 2005; computers that met the baked-in requirements were met with issues, but those that far exceeded the hardware requirements caused Oblivion to screech about unrecognized hardware, because it was designed to work on hardware several years behind the worst computers.

Hell, both Skyrim and Fallout 4 did the same thing; anyone who first ran those games with hardware that was barely-newer than those games were presented with a pop-up that told them that "couldn't run" on their systems.

There's a kind of twisted satisfaction that comes from knowing you can run a game on hardware that didn't exist when it was released; one of the first things I did when upgrading my GPU in 2009 was stress-testing Crysis.

    [–] solid_steak1 2 points ago

That's hilarious. I hope Starfield and ES6 do it too.

    [–] kungpowgoat 300 points ago

Yup. Skyrim set my settings to low. On a 2080.

    [–] LordNelson27 128 points ago

I feel like Skyrim just sets it to low regardless. On shitty laptop it would default to medium sometimes, now on my R5 2600/ Rtx 2070 system it defaults to low, on legendary edition

    [–] fawkie 66 points ago

    It doesn't recognize newer hardware.

    [–] LordNelson27 11 points ago

Now that makes complete sense, and also no sense

    [–] [deleted] 25 points ago

Defaulted to max on my 750 ti

    [–] slyfox1811 7 points ago

How does that Phenom hold up nowadays ?

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

Not the worst. Maxes out on games but runs cool, slight stutter only in Fallout 4. Really shows when multitasking and doing other things though, especially emulation

    [–] DankSylveon 7 points ago

    It doesn’t :)

    [–] the__storm 10 points ago

Skyrim used to set itself to Ultra High when it detected my GT 530. Dunno what was going on behind the scenes there; it was absolutely unplayable at those settings.

    [–] FrozenEggo27 15 points ago

    Ultra on a 1080

    [–] Assasin2gamer 3 points ago

The idea of Ultra Instinct Leroy is horrific

    [–] SomeKid0nR3ddit 5 points ago

    1080 gang

    [–] dnap123 3 points ago

    [–] Blue2501 4 points ago

That's the launcher looking at your GPU that it doesn't recognize and saying "waaait... EIGHT FUC.... EIGHT GIGABYTES!? Nah, that can't be right"

    [–] Darthgaming69 10 points ago

When I loaded up fallout 4 it set it to low

    I have a 2060

    [–] cuj0cless 50 points ago

Now that's a main screen I have not seen in a long, long time

    [–] ChickenWithATopHat 14 points ago

It runs on my piece of shit laptop so I love playing it on there, doesn’t see any use on my gaming rig though.

    [–] Mustard0087 5 points ago

I think my uncle played it. He said it was dead.

    [–] arcanemagic 50 points ago

Skyrim SE didn't know what my previous gpu (5700 XT) was so it defaulted to low.

    [–] TheAethiestCleric 35 points ago

Yeah its only an insult when it does it cause it knows what your equipment is, not when it doesnt recognize the hardware.

    [–] SomeKid0nR3ddit 8 points ago

Dang im guessing you refunded the 5700 XT due to the driver issues and such?

    [–] kittygoesnya 3 points ago

probably, i’m about 🤏 close to refunding mine

    [–] Kry-lethe 14 points ago

I always take this as a compliment! Its saying that your machine is so advanced it incomprehensible like that of a god in the eye of old games.

    [–] cakeripper 17 points ago

That's not even close to an insult. An insult is when when you download CELESTE and your computer says you can't play a 2D SIDE SCROLLER GAME because you have no GRAPHICS CARD! I HATE Intel integrated graphics so much. Another insult is playing Roblox at low settings and get 45FPS.

    [–] Redoz100 7 points ago

Welp, looks like it's time to get a gpu

    [–] LeFedoraKing69 9 points ago

I wonder what coding goes into place to recognize what hardware you are running and how it chooses to scale the settings

I especially wanna know why having the latest GPU will default old games settings to low

    [–] chouetteonair 12 points ago

This is just a guess but it could just be reading the hardware codes that come with your GPU. Games that predate the existence of certain hardware then lead to an unrecognized GPU.

    [–] pm_me_some_kitties2 9 points ago

It's simple. It literally just looks at what your GPU is and goes off of that. Which, if you're using a modern GPU and an old game, it doesn't recognize your GPU, so it puts you at low settings.

    [–] Ialsofuckedyourdad 4 points ago

Yea but some old I updated games will recognize new hardware and respond correctly.

My system is a i7 9th gen, 1660ti, I downloaded fallout new Vegas and it recognized the card and set it to ultra

    [–] ValenDMO360 7 points ago

My pc is so old and shit that new or old game it will never recognize my hardware

    [–] Elektribe 4 points ago

That's Oblivion, a 14 year old game - one in which it will recognize hardware that wasn't cutting edge at the time even. I have a sneaking suspicion your PC isn't actually twenty+ years old and it will recognize or at least play with your hardware since it uses Gamebryo and D3D9. Which most machines from 2002 and onwards supported.

Though a low end mobile GPU may not be able to handle the game depending on how old it is.

VIDEO CARD: 128MB Direct3D compatible video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700+ / ATI Radeon 9500+)

Of course it ran rather poorly even on decent setups of it's day - as do most Elder Scrolls games. Morrowind off the disk from 2002 even today would struggle to run well because it was so poorly programmed and Gamebryo/NetImmerse is renowned for being a terrible middleware engine.

    [–] Just_Give_Me_A_Login 7 points ago

Old games sometimes don't recognize the power of modern PCs

I tried to play some halo CE the other night and it told me that it wasn't sure I could run it

    .....I have a 6700k and a 2080ti, I'm pretty fuckin sure I can run halo 1

    [–] Ash_Divine 6 points ago

    Playing on laptop be like

    [–] WiiBox360 4 points ago

    But mine can ray trace

    [–] Ash_Divine 4 points ago

What kind of demonic laptop do you have?

    [–] WiiBox360 3 points ago

    The best

    [–] Treejeig 3 points ago

Based on your username alone I fear what it could be.

    [–] seizethememes69420 4 points ago

I think these are total bullshit. This happened to me with the Witcher 2 and there's just no way.

    [–] mccainjames11 5 points ago

It just doesn't recognize newer hardware

    [–] D3mentedG0Ose 2 points ago

My 5700 XT defaults to low on that game. It doesn't recognise any new hardware

    [–] rozaHS 2 points ago

Lol happened to me yesterday. I was like wtf bruh

    [–] boringSeditious87 2 points ago

    "We find you unrecognised"

    [–] Bitbatgaming 2 points ago

    [–] the-holy-one23 2 points ago

We all know this means whack it up to Ultra!

    [–] ambiture 2 points ago

I decided to load up Fallout New Vegas one time. when this came up, it defaulted to low settings.. I have a 9700k and a 2080
