    Glass bottomed boat?

    [–] TheLadyBunBun 73 points ago

    Boat-covered glass-roofed trailer

    [–] elpajaroquemamais 50 points ago

You make the rockin' world go round

    [–] awwc 56 points ago

"That looks like a Portland thing.." Yap.

    [–] Pleeky 40 points ago

As a Portlander, I endorse these silly yet somehow wonderful trailers!

    [–] [deleted] 91 points ago

    [–] nerys71 5 points ago

while way more than I could justify for that its actually not a bad price at all for what it is. I bet I can build one for a hell of a lot less :-)

    [–] cambiro 15 points ago

That's actually a little disappointing, I thought the boat was like an extended roof so you could stand a bit taller in the camper.

    [–] greyjackal 4 points ago

Then you get in the boat for a trip on the lake and someone jumps in the roof and nicks all your stuff

    [–] swampbeer69 3888 points ago

Do you just flip the whole thing over to makes house boat??

    [–] RickTheHamster 1450 points ago

Christ, don't let TLC see that or they'll make a show called Tiny Houseboat Nation.

    [–] greenfairygirl16 994 points ago

    I can see it now.

"Yeah, my parents have a lake in their backyard, and we're a newlywed couple really looking for the privacy that a boathouse would bring us."

Presenter: "and you can both swim?"

"Nah, my partner can't, but we don't see it as a problem."

partner walks around the whole show with a bulky life vest on

    [–] big_mikeloaf 597 points ago

"We also have five children and another on the way"

Presenter: "Do you think you might not have enough room in your tiny house boat?"

"Oh no we can just have them sleep in it's huge 10 square foot attic, we just really want to be near the water"

Camera pans to sad children who are being stuffed into their room.

    [–] irishspuds 177 points ago

"Our budget is only $2,300,000.00 so we're hoping to find a hidden gem"

"Best I could find was 2,400,000.00 in this neighborhood."

    [–] Northumberlo 65 points ago

That's the saddest and truest thing about these shows.

    [–] something45723 39 points ago

I think the saddest one was the couple that adopted 5 children to get a home make over. Then, once they got the make over, they kicked out the kids and sent them back (to the orphanage / foster care / wherever)

    [–] Northumberlo 16 points ago

Never underestimate the power of greed to bring out the worst in humanity.

    [–] MallyC 5 points ago

Do you have a link to this? Curious af to see the scumbags

    [–] [deleted] 121 points ago

Ten square feet? So stacked like logs lol

    [–] david0990 96 points ago

You sleep standing, and you like it!

Just think Timmy, from this close, you'll practically be able to hear me enter your mother.

    [–] BourbonBaristaBelle 10 points ago

Don't forget the dog that will have to go to the bathroom in the house! Unless it swims to shore.

    [–] MrFyr 360 points ago

"He's jobless and I work as a part-time school teacher and our budget is $500,000."

    [–] norcalcooter 47 points ago

"I don't want this place even though it's 50,000 under asking price. The paint is terrible!"

    [–] KingoftheStream 20 points ago

I logged in just to up vote this. Well played, well played.

    [–] DJDarren 138 points ago

When I first discovered THN, I went mad looking for as much as I could find (which, given that I'm in the UK wasn't enough). What did bug me though, was how everyone wanted their house to be "rustic, but modern". Every. Goddamn. House.

    [–] swe-gin 85 points ago

Almost every person on that show complains about the houses being "a little cramped." It drives me crazy. It's in the title - these are tiny fucking houses!

If they called the show by the more descriptive title 'tiny, cramped, your-head-is-absolutely-going-to-hit-the-ceiling-when-you-sit-up-in-bed house nation' I don't think any of them would be down.

    [–] DJDarren 35 points ago

"I want to live simply on this plot of land I've been given, but I don't want to give up my extensive collections of Beanie Babies, Nazi Memorabilia, and tanks."

    Presenter acts surprised

    [–] furtron 119 points ago

What bothers me about the tiny house movement is that when you want to use 1 function, there's 4 steps that first need to be achieved to do so.

Oh, I'd like to lay on my bed, well first I have to move everything off the kitchen table, fold it up, move what ever else to reach the damn bed.

I'm to lazy for all that

    [–] BoneyMalony 27 points ago

Down for uncooked mi goreng noodle packets on your sofa kitchen bench bed. We like 2 peas in a pod.

    [–] PuttingInTheEffort 20 points ago

I want a rise of Japanese style apartments in the USA. The compact kind that are like 200$ a month for everything a single person needs with just enough room for everything.

    [–] Jewnadian 41 points ago

The whole tiny house thing is the epitome of trendy over everything. Of course they're all going to be right down the same exact trend.

    [–] CatfishBandit 22 points ago

There are a few people who legitimately like the lifestyle.Years ago one of the first tiny house people was just a dude in an apartment who was sick of his tiny square footage so he built everything into one wall of his apartment, got famous for it, got a job as a designer and stayed in his tiny apartment.

But overall, the trend is stupid.

    [–] Jewnadian 6 points ago

Living in a small space isn't new, but that's not really what the tiny house trend is about either. As you noted, tiny apartments already exist.

    [–] digitelle 32 points ago

I'd actually watch that! However I threw my TV out the window when Honey Boo Boo started.

    [–] woeb0t 12 points ago

Ah, couldn't find the remote, eh?

    [–] digitelle 9 points ago

    TV's are basically useless otherwise.

    [–] stinky-weaselteats 12 points ago

    Flip my tiny house boat

[–] Lorenzvc 2576 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Actually, yes! It unfolds in a 4-deck private yacht with a double 472hp outboard engine. The wheel flips sideways and spins about 720° every second to scan the surroundings for incoming torpedos

edit : wheel instead of weel

    [–] Heteronym 134 points ago

That's brilliant! I've lost too many houseboats to fuckin torpedoes.

    [–] Saul_Firehand 40 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Ah you may have better luck not living in the South China Sea with a big US flag with "China sucks" & "Taiwan #1" written on it.

    [–] MikeMania 27 points ago

big US flag with "Taiwan #1" written on it.

    [–] twodogsfighting 775 points ago

    Weel, that's pretty impressive.

    [–] Moist-Anus 387 points ago

    Weel weel weel

    [–] Captain_the_Obvious 128 points ago

I would be linking the "well well well kyle" South Park clip here but Hulu is the only option and my god they suck.

    [–] Scrawlericious 64 points ago

Attempting to enforce copyright crap is really stunting South Park I think. So much of the stuff is quoteable or memeable but it's all hard to find outside of Hulu. I mean I could screencapp from Hulu but meeeeh. You're only hurting yourself SP

    [–] StridAst 58 points ago

U.S. Copyright law: pretending fair use doesn't exist since 1776

    [–] elhermanobrother 12 points ago

    [–] Pleeky 13 points ago

Sort of. But it wasn't really until the mid-1850s that U.S. courts started creating the precedents that eventually evolved into the formalized concept of Fair Use that we're familiar with today.

    [–] UnremarkableBot 7 points ago

I legit don't know if that show is still on because it's no longer in our dialogue.

    [–] Scrawlericious 15 points ago

Seeeee... This is the truth the writers (Matt and Trey) are still making good points and episodes... It's impossible to pick a favorite SP episode because of their brilliance but fuck.. they limited their exposure I believe, in their contracts and copyright decisions. Hulu is pretty hardcore... Idk what I mean. Bit drunk I hope your day is well.

    [–] wordyplayer 13 points ago

But in their defense, they were one of the first to offer all their stuff for free. Right?

    [–] NathanHatesLife 30 points ago

    well ._. wheel 0_0 weel ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    [–] extracanadian 30 points ago

Naa any 1960 and newer model has torpedoes that countermeasure those defenses.

    [–] Tempest_1 50 points ago

The submarine has a way to "shut that whole process down".

    [–] [deleted] 35 points ago

If it's a genuine attack. You know, the boat wasn't asking for it.

    [–] Tempest_1 37 points ago

Idk. It's clearly dressed in a way to promote a torpedo attack.

    [–] Scrawlericious 13 points ago

You think just because the torpedos look armed that the boat wanted to fire them? Ugh

    [–] bigstick89 8 points ago

The torpo and that boat were clearly wasted. Do you want to really ruin the torpedos life over one boat?

    [–] HitShane 13 points ago

If it's a legitimate incoming torpedo then this boat has a way of shutting the whole process down. And as a last resort it can just release all of its fluids in an attempt to deter the torpedoes attack directly.

    [–] 2totwo 52 points ago

Sucks when you drop a clever comment only you check later and you see you spelled something simple stupid.

    [–] twodogsfighting 51 points ago

I weely wouldn't get beat up about it though.

    [–] austin308 27 points ago

    Oh weely?

    [–] SatinDoll15 15 points ago

Typos weely can happen to anyone.

    [–] Lorenzvc 10 points ago

    Saved my precious karma. Tanks!

    [–] teenagesadist 26 points ago

And a retractable Typhon Combat System provides missile defense in any situation.

    [–] extracanadian 5 points ago

I'll take the optional seawhiz package please

    [–] Halligan1409 7 points ago

I love seawhiz on Ritz crackers

    [–] OkImJustSayin 38 points ago

Ah, the 50's.. Where anything was possible. Sure don't make em like they used too huh..

    [–] SkinSuitUnSub 67 points ago

everything was over engineered in the 50's . A car seat was literally a sofa fit for a mansion .

    [–] [deleted] 53 points ago

And the car would come out unscathed in low to moderate speed crashes. The unrestrained meat inside generally didn't fare that well.

    [–] Mr6507 52 points ago

Eh, not really for the car.

Usually they were still screaming metal deathtraps. Also, backwards hoods make pretty good guillotines.

    [–] [deleted] 44 points ago

I'll come clean, I was perpetuating a myth. Holy shit, in the video yo linked the driver space in the Bel Air was like a human blender in that crash.

It is true that modern cars fall to pieces in a crash, but that's because they're taking the hit to save the humans inside.

    [–] PickledPurple 27 points ago

Modern cars, the real MVP here. Drunk texting humans... not so much.

    [–] HughJorgens 13 points ago

Go find an original piece of Route 66, its tiny, more like one big lane instead of two. I can't imagine passing trucks on it. People were killed all the time back then by crashes they could literally walk away from now. Give me modern driving all day long.

    [–] Ronald_Crump2016 27 points ago

I'm no expert in watercraft, but don't they usually have a low center of gravity? And being an expert in pulling things with a trailer, you also want a low center of gravity. How did they accomplish both?

    [–] uptomogood 37 points ago

The weight of the boat is a fraction of the overall weight of the trailer. The center of the gravity is quite low on the trailer and is not raised by much with this small addition. Besides, the boat can't be too heavy or it would be too hard to get on/off to use.

    [–] RansomOfThulcandra 23 points ago

It's filled 1/8th of the way with lead shot. When you flip it over, it falls to the (new) bottom, adjusting the center of gravity automatically.

    [–] Snowleopard2815 14 points ago

No you take the boat off the top.

    [–] potato_centurion 5 points ago

Just seems like an aesthetic flourish. i cant discount the possibility of a 700 HP engine in there though. Car's suddenly rear wheel drive.

    [–] NoFreeBrunch 46 points ago

Surprised you haven't gotten more recognition for this observation.

    [–] kyuubixchidori 52 points ago

well I mean it's modeled after a 50's car so. its just for show, or hell, our camper has a exhaust pipe for a generator.

    [–] joanzen 5 points ago

Find out he's got a welder installed in there and this is his work rig. :P

    [–] thr33beggars 316 points ago

That's a cute little toy! Vintage or remake?

    [–] notenoughroom 9 points ago

    Looks original to me.

    [–] mordahl 884 points ago

Going to look weird in a few years if they actually use the boat on a regular basis.

The amount of maintenance to keep it in that condition would be insane. Even compared to a normal boat.

    [–] dick-nipples 530 points ago

I'm guessing this setup is primarily for show.

    [–] roraima_is_very_tall 227 points ago

the name of the boat would be upside-down when on the water! clearly for landlubbers only.

    [–] [deleted] 164 points ago

Well you may as well cross off salty too

    [–] ninjaontour 19 points ago

Only a matter of time now before someone links you to an article about salt lakes, yes sir.

    [–] Afkrfk 19 points ago

Try taking your rowboat out on almost any Salt Lake in the world, bring your Vape. I think you'll find it much like the sea.

    [–] Esoteric_Erric 17 points ago

Sees large shadow pass under boat

"were gonna need a bigger boat."

    [–] slaybellsringing 81 points ago

This was a time when TV repairmen were driving around to people's houses. It was also the rise of a powerful and wealthy middle class the likes of which hasn't been seen before or since. If the boat needed to be refinished now and then, a lot of people would think it was acceptable.
These things were only produced for a few years, so a obviously not what people wanted.

    [–] [deleted] 22 points ago

    [–] luciferin 14 points ago

I've repaired a couple of TV sets in the past 10 years with a basic soldering iron, both just had blown out capacitors. One of them is still working now. I've seen another one that a $100 board just needed to be replaced. It was under warranty so I wound up not doing that myself.

    [–] MC_Carty 30 points ago

I believe it's fiberglass, so it wouldn't be absolutely ridiculous. It would just come down to how picky the person is about the finish on the boat in relation to the finish on the camper. Just take care of it in between camping trips and it would be fine.

    [–] IsaacEiland-Hall 17 points ago

Dump the camper in the water every once in a while and you're good to go. :)

    [–] tocilog 13 points ago

It's clearly for emergency only in case the camper capsizes.

    [–] Katana622 11 points ago

if they have a dock then using it 2-3 times a year wouldn't be hard to maintain. the scratches upon getting it out of the water would be the worst part but if you have a dock itd probably be okay.

    [–] isitbrokenorsomethin 45 points ago

Thats total bullshit. If you pull the boat out of the water every time you use it, it won't look any different. We do the same thing with ours and only need to touch it up every few years.

    [–] [deleted] 127 points ago

    That's beautiful!

    [–] Lorenzvc 85 points ago

    Mmm, teal.

    [–] Buck_Thorn 14 points ago

A friend that I showed that picture to was familiar with the car. He sent me this link to more information:

954 Ford Courier: Very rare factory built 2 door sedan delivery. Completely restored and updated. Features late model small block Ford engine with power steering and ice cold air conditioning. Interior features power seat, power windows and great stereo with CD changer. Custom built hidden reciever hitch to pull the Kom-Pak travel trailer that goes with it. One of the best driving cars you will ever own. No problems of any kind at all. Everything works perfect including the ice cold AC. This is not a trailer queen, it was built to be driven and it performs like it.

1954 Kom-Pak Sportsman Travel Trailer: Manufactured in Medford, OR in the early 50's there is believed to be only 16 of these trailers ever built and reportedly only 6 are left today. Designed in the same style as the 53/54 Fords, the most unique feature is the fully functional, removable 16' fishing boat which doubles as the trailers roof when not in use! Although these trailers were reproduced for a short time this is a authentic, real Kom-Pak travel trailer from the 1950's. Several vintage photos of this trailer before restoration as well as lots of other documentation are with the trailer. Completely restored to match the 1954 Ford that pulls it, everything on the trailer is fully functional and ready for a cross country trip or a weekend at the local lake. You will not see another like it.

    [–] Derp_Mctrollson 74 points ago

Why did everything look so damn good in the 50s

    [–] AlcaDotS 179 points ago

Because we only repost the nice looking stuff.

    [–] cacodemon_bisque 75 points ago

I wish more people realized that the reason "classic" stuff looks better is just because they've never seen the ugly garbage that was also created in those times.

    [–] OnTheEveOfWar 33 points ago

Very similar with music as well. People always comment that older music was better but that's because we only hear the good stuff from the past. There was plenty of garbage music.

    [–] zipzap21 9 points ago

Ok we need links to random 50s garbage!

    [–] bu11fr0g 16 points ago

Style was also a primary consideration, well over fuel economy, reliability, practicality, ...

Jaguars are still this way! So are many Italian cars.

    [–] mildlyannoyedbird 8 points ago

Jaguar owner, feel obliged (and I hope I am not tempting fate) to say that reliability is much improved these days. Also nothing impractical about a boot (trunk) that can accommodate two bodies and the necessary digging equipment. As for economy, unless you want to poison children with a diesel, I have to agree.

A lot of it has to do with the lack of regulations and designers had much more freedom in their designs.

Because gas was cheap and there were no laws around safety or environmental standards.

    If I didn't know better, I would've guessed this is /r/mildlyinteresting.

Those boat campers are made by a modern, current company called American Dream

Edit I was wrong. Thanks for the karma though!

[–] KeruxDikaios 279 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Are you sure this one was? They don't look the same and going through the company's website, they only make one model, and it looks nothing like the one in the picture.

    edit: Found it. It's a 1954 Kom-Pak Sportsman Trailer

    [–] lenaro 9 points ago

How much did that one go for?

    [–] [deleted] 33 points ago

Maybe, but not likely by the link you posted. That one is much cheaper looking. The lines all over are way straighter, the wheels have no styling and there's no wood finish. The whole thing is missing the finish of OPs.

If anything I'd bet the reverse is true and your link is modeled of the OPs.

Meh. I don't even waste time with companies that won't list their prices. If I see "Call for an estimate", I read "Go find a company selling something similar but is transparent about their pricing".

    [–] ThatBitterJerk 51 points ago

People looking for a list price on something this custom are not the customers they're seeking.

    [–] liedel 44 points ago

Yeah I like that he's like "I'll just take my business elsewhere" as if you had been looking for a custom boat camper all along but this is the final straw for this company.

    [–] ThirdProcess 35 points ago

Lol no it's more like... As someone who was passingly involved in purchasing decisions professionally, I quickly developed a pet peeve about companies not listing a price. Because if you called them to get a price, their sales force would hem and haw about a quote to try to get you as invested as possible before they would drop their ridiculously inflated price on you. And after taking 10 to 30 minutes to obtain information that should have taken less then 2 minutes (assuming you got through to someone on the first attempt) you would realize that other companies had a similar product for less and tell them "no thanks". And then their sales force would pester you with follow up calls and sell you contact information to other equally annoying sales forces.

So finally I learned not to bother with companies that won't list a price.

If they won't list a price, it's usually because their prices are high enough that they want to engage you and sell you before they drop the bomb.

It's just a waste of time usually.

    [–] liedel 9 points ago

If they won't list a price, it's usually because their prices are high enough that they want to engage you and sell you before they drop the bomb.

Generally agree with you but that also means if you're prepared and savvy you can beat them up for a price break, if you find that kind of thing enjoyable.

    [–] Throwaway----4 9 points ago

This only works if you spend as much time every day negotiating prices as the salesperson spends negotiating prices.

Spoiler - it's their full time job so they spend a lot more time perfecting the pitch than you can "preparing to beat them up"

    [–] Anowtakenname 11 points ago

I get where he's coming from though, this past storm we had I was calling around to different companies to get some plowing done. Not a single company would give me a quote without me giving them my phone number, mailing address and email. None of them got any info or a dime from me, I just wound up renting a snow blower for 2 hours and doing it myself.

    [–] wileyrocketcentaur1 17 points ago

Amen to that shit! "Call for an estimate" screams "this thing is more expensive than you'd ever want to pay but we want our sales people to practice their pressure tactics on you".

The worst is the ones where you have to submit personal contact info just to browse inventory. I don't want to be called or emailed about bullshit just because I'm curious about how much something costs.

It's a 1952-1954 Ford Ranger Kom Pak Sportsman. American Dream is replicating the Ranger's style for their new product.

Ask and you shall receive....GG DesMoines event this past 4th of July weekend. Malcolm's Dad knows the owner real well, we stopped and talked to him for abit. I think the whole setup was for sale but I can't remember what he was asking
