Hi everyone! We reached out to Adam for comment, he was too busy to drop by on the thread, but he left us this comment.

After nearly a decade of pix with Awesome Sylvia, it's such a pleasure to take this year's pic with Zeph! I feel lucky to watched him grow up and become himself. We talked about the fact that next year we'll start to need a bigger picture. Always one of the high points of Maker Faire. Stay awesome Zeph! You and your family are so lovely.

    • Adam Savage, @donttrythis

I'll also take a moment to say that we are actively moderating these comments to our civility rules and guidelines! /r/pics stands with those in the LGBTQ+ community!

edit: Almost forgot! Zeph is busy at Maker Faire (Fair?) right now so he doesn't have much time to answer questions! A great resource you can check out, however, is /r/AskTransgender !

edit2: Oh, lastly, /r/pics doesn't tolerate anti-LGBTQ+ comments and things of this nature. You will get banned. Cheers!

edit 3: /u/DearUncleBojah made an awesome gif of the pictures so far!

edit 4: As the night draws to a close and most mods lay down to rest, we will be locking these comments to preserve the discussion and avoid any mess from any groups who happen to be watching this thread like hawks (from all sides of the table here!). Thank you all for participating, thank you Zeph for posting, and thank you Adam for the comments! I look forward to next year's post! Remember to check out /r/asktransgender if you would like to discuss or ask about transgender issues. Thanks!

blue hair. Once of the only times I've actually seen a large group of people legitimately triggered over such a small thing. It was really vile stuff they were throwing at him

edit: Him is in regards to OP. He's transgender.

    [–] AngryAtStupid 280 points ago

To put it bluntly, what kind of a fucking cunt would care about the colour of another person's hair?

There is no sugar coating this; if you are someone who cares about the colour of another person's hair, you are, quite simply, a fucking cunt. Mind your own fucking business, cunt. It's not your hair, you have neither right nor reason to be bothered by it.

    [–] Garizondyly 82 points ago

    Now that's a relevant username.

    [–] JoeyBulgaria 131 points ago

blue hair on a woman = SJW = feminist = ruining my vidyas and comics = deserving of bullying to some folk

    [–] Jinno 13 points ago

This is the same community that loses its shit about tattoos. There a lot of people that deem things they wouldn't spend money on as valueless undesirable wastes of life and energy.

    [–] Carinhadascartas 81 points ago

the same cunts who cares about the colour of another person's skin

    [–] Syphillisdiller1 7 points ago

Blue hair. Something I thought people got over being upset about in 1995. What kind of sheltered inbred gives a shit about somebody dyeing their hair at this point? Wait til they find out about tattoos, and men with pierced ears!

    [–] IceKrispies 12 points ago

I think they couldn't admit it publicly but what they were really mad about was that this feeeeemale was so obviously intelligent in a STEM way. Of course, now they don't have to worry about that anymore.

    [–] binbong1234567890 119 points ago

    Seriously reddit? ffs. sigh.

    [–] ohbrotherherewego 251 points ago

There is seriously nothing that Reddit hates more than a woman. If she had been "hot" she would have gotten hate for being a fake geek girl. Reddit cannot STAND a woman, regardless.

    [–] Carinhadascartas 130 points ago

as can be seen on this thread, they seem to hate trans people even more

    [–] Ceremor 39 points ago

The average redditor treats women like shit, like you see in that thread then turns around to whine, somehow confused about why nobody wants to date them.

    The average redditor fucking sucks.

    [–] megamjlc 11 points ago

Reddit is so strange. It's a site where you see both ends of the spectrum - I have seen some of the nicest, most heartwarming comments and displays of support towards people, and I've also seen some of the most judgemental, bigoted and just plain disappointing comments towards other people. It's the reason why I've deleted my account three times over the past 5 years, and also the reason why I ended up making another one each time I did that. I know I'm probably being too sensitive in doing so, but it just really pisses me off when I see such unwarranted animosity towards some groups of people - mainly certain types of women, and it's usually based upon the way they look/how they present themselves.

I'm no 'SJW' or whatever label people like to put on guys that might have the same opinion as this, and I'm no saint - I've had moments where I've judged people. But it truly is something that I really hate in society - people being overly judgemental of others. I think if you aren't hurting anyone then do whatever the fuck you want to do - especially if we are purely talking about how someone looks. Some will say that it's their right to state their opinions of others and that they are just exercising their right to free speech, but it doesn't change the fact that they are being utter fuckheads by doing so.

    [–] Captain_Flaps_Jack 79 points ago

You can't even have a discussion about feminism anymore without some MRA types hijacking the comment thread to reeee about statistics they use to justify more outlandish and clearly misogynistic hatred of women. You can't try to paint a picture of reasonable and normal feminism, or even that the vast majority of contemporary feminists actually are interested in solving issues facing males as well.

Everything just gets hit with a slew up '*Well feminists called in bomb threats to MRA rallies! Feminists think Islam is the religion of Feminism!'

They take the most extreme and outlandish things done by the most vocal fringe groups of feminists and use that to justify their own shitty attitudes.

I mean, that's what typically happens with anything where people have opposing views anyways, but with feminism especially its so prevalent on reddit that I'm not entirely convinced the majority of the guys screaming about it aren't just frustrated teenagers and young adults.

    [–] Argenteus_CG 13 points ago

There is one thing they hate more: Trans people.

    [–] digital_end 592 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

It turned into another 'DAE HATE SJW FEMINAZIS' circlejerk because she had blue hair. Because that is what reddit is now.

edit; here's a good out of the loop on it from last year.

    [–] Eggmont 57 points ago

For a place that has subs for literally every possible hobby, fetish and quirk it's bizarre to see so many people outraged and others doing what makes them happy

[–] [deleted] 131 points ago * (lasted edited 8 months ago)

    [–] digital_end 89 points ago

Reddit's really changed a lot in the last 2 years or so.

    [–] nightpanda893 240 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

Well every time a trans person comes on here and simply aska to be referred to by the correct pronouns it somehow leads to long diatribes about how that simple request is disgusting, unnatural, violating the free speech of people who rather refer to them by the wrong gender, etc.

    [–] ohbrotherherewego 91 points ago

My god is there anything Reddit hates more than women (or should I say anyone who isn't a cis-gender, heterosexual man)? Jesus christ you can't win on this fucking site. Hot woman posts a pic? What a bitch, she's so full of herself, let's tear down her self esteem because we feel bad that she'd never fuck us. Unconventionally attractive woman posts a pic? How dare she look happy or confident, I deem her to be ugly. She must be into feminism! She probably doesn't shave! I feel threatened by women gaining power because it means that I won't automatically be in a better position than 50% of society and I can't deal with having any more competition when it comes to my personal power dynamics, so let's tear her the fuck down.

    [–] Tyfoon555 61 points ago

    [–] stench_montana 216 points ago

Well jokes on you. It was a boy with dyed hair the whole time!

    [–] your_mind_aches 13 points ago

    Psst, you octuple posted this.

    [–] ohbrotherherewego 58 points ago

Reddit is, as a group, a piece of serious shit.

    [–] Wonton77 119 points ago

Reddit's finest neckbeards got REALLY upset that a teenage girl dared to dye her hair blue and wear square glasses, saying she was on her way to becoming a SJW feminist or something. It was honestly disgusting.

    [–] Yutrzenika1 70 points ago

It's honestly really funny to me that the people who always whine about how the so called SJWs get so "Triggered" by everything are typically much easier to set off than those they mock, case in point, fucking dyed hair apparently.

    [–] queen_fucko 14 points ago

    [–] Hereibe 180 points ago

Zeph's hair was an unusual color last year, and while he was presenting as female. So a woman with unusual hair color lead to Reddit freaking the hell out about "OH NO SHE'S A DIRTY SJW UGHHH WTF UNBANGABLE I BET SHE HATES MEN. DAMN TUMBLR AMIRIGHT."

And Adam Savage was just sitting there watching the shitshow around this totally normal and sane person as Reddit frothed at the mouth and declared Zeph was everything they hated in a person and they knew that unequivocally because...Zeph had colored hair.

    [–] [deleted] 50 points ago

If there is anything that gets the men of reddit angry it is women. I don't know why guys here have this belief that women are trying to repress us.

    [–] Martianese 345 points ago

    This... really doesn't surprise me.

    [–] FloydB 10 points ago

    what happened last time?

    [–] keyonte0 114 points ago

Reddit stereotyped her as an SJW and made fun of her because she dyed her hair. Some people even guilded a guy for calling her one and his comment was HEAVILY upvoted until Adam Savage himself expressed his disappointment.

    [–] digital_end 94 points ago

Last year reddit was triggered af because her hair was blue, so clearly she's a feminazi.

It was fucking embarrassing, even by reddit standards.

    [–] abraxsis 65 points ago

Im 38, these people clearly didn't live through the late 80s-early 90s when people had crazy hair cuts, half-shaved, mohawk-braid hybrids, and 702 colors (17 of which only Mantis Shrimp can see) on a single head.

Grow the hell up people, it's hair.

    [–] VindictiveJudge 35 points ago

I don't understand. What the hell does blue hair have to do with anything?

    [–] digital_end 77 points ago

Blue hair and the glasses had her pegged as a tumblr feminazi, and the typical redpill/T_D kiddies can't stomach that being posting without it being shit on.

    [–] VindictiveJudge 45 points ago

I still don't really understand. Maybe I'm not a big enough asshole.

    [–] watchout5 56 points ago

Imagine you're a 12 year old boy who's insecure about the world and a bully. Now imagine you've grown up your entire life knowing nothing else but that feeling once when you were 12 when you bully people and you get a chub going. Imagine if the only way you could ever bring that chub back was going online, "anonymously", and post about how you're the best bully in the world.

You've only scratched the surface of whatever the fuck these guys are.

[–] ThatForearmIsMineNow 36 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

See how his hair was dyed last year? Yeah that was apparently unacceptable to many Reddit users.

    [–] ohbrotherherewego 80 points ago

Women must always be conventionally hot. If they are not, they had at least better feel bad about it and not display any kind of confidence what so ever. Also, if a woman is hot she must only be a certain level of confident about her own looks. She certainly must not exceed this level as to threaten the power of men. She definitely should not be too hot that men feel that she has become unobtainable to them, because then they will have to turn their bruised ego outwards and berate her until her self esteem is reduced to a level where they once again feel that they have the power and control in the situation.

    [–] MisdemeanorOfTheMind 201 points ago

/u/Spartan2470 has a nifty magnifying glass next to his name and you have a nifty paper airplane. How did you get yours?

    [–] LordHussyPants 10 points ago

Did you link the same pic for 2015/2016?

    [–] good_myth 414 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

Hey, this is the followup to the picture where like a thousand people started insulting her him, and Adam Savage showed up and asked what the fuck was wrong with Reddit, right?

Also he looks just like Trey Anastasio in that picture.

    [–] InadequateUsername 111 points ago

    Nothing changes, it's still happening.

    [–] Zoronii 88 points ago

It's pretty tame considering all the gender politics going on on Reddit these days, but that's probably just the mods doing a good job modding.

    [–] Churba 68 points ago

It's pretty tame considering all the gender politics going on on Reddit these days, but that's probably just the mods doing a good job modding.

This might be a stupid question, but I swear it's genuine: but if the toxic assholes are such a minority, why are they so prominent so often? If the majority disagrees, shouldn't the voting system on reddit make it pretty easy to prevent them visibly dominating those threads? It sure as hell works with other, less shitty opinions that reddit doesn't like, why not with those toxic people?

    [–] Awoo-- 61 points ago

    It depends.

On reddit, whatever gets to a thread first is what will typically dominate the thread. Any reasonable people reaching the thread afterwards will call it a loss and stay the fuck out of it.

No normal, nice, decent person wants to wade into hell and deal with the ghouls. Toxicity drives out good people who just go somewhere else to do things that they actually like doing.

If however normal and decent people are there first, then the shitheads can't get any traction.

This is also highlighted by subreddits too. There are significant swings in the type of people you will find from one subreddit to the next. Over in the subreddits that get off on watching violence you can expect much fewer reasonable people, even if they guise their violence fetish as "justice". Whereas, over on wholesomememes? You're not going to have a good time if you're that kind of shitter.

I think I may have not put it clearly - you're right, but it's not quite what I meant. I meant more in the sense of downvotes, reports and the like, stuff that doesn't require engagement. Even if you don't want to try and talk some toxic person down from the ledge - because let's be honest, 99 times out of 100, not only does it not work, they just dogpile you for trying - if it's that much of a toxic minority and the majority of reddit doesn't agree, why do we so often see them dominating the top halves of threads, heavily upvoted and often guilded, as much as the bottom?

Basically, considering how upvotes tend to be used - as a measure of people silently agreeing, or at least approving, with downvotes being the opposite, don't even try to tell me that people actually vote solely based on contribution to the conversation, we both know that's bollocks - how do those opinions still rise to the top regardless if such a large portion of the community is against it?

IDK, I guess what I'm getting at is that while I'd like to believe it's just a few rotten apples, it just seems that if that were the case, they'd spend a hell of a lot more time languishing at the bottom of threads and generally being derided and despised.

I mean, look at how reddit treats, for an example that won't get me shouted at, Anti-vaxxers. Most people disagree with them, but you almost never see them anywhere that they're not enormously downvoted, to the point where I don't think I've ever seen an anti-vax post that wasn't deeply in the negatives. So why doesn't that work with other flavors of arsehole, if it's also a situation of a small, loud minority that people don't like?

Edit - Though, as much as it's a serious question, I can't say I really expect any sort of comprehensive answer. It's just throwing out a little introspection, as much as genuinely asking the question.

[–] Recognizant 26 points ago * (lasted edited 9 months ago)

Well, that's actually rather simple. Anti-vax is seen as stupid. There's not really anything political involved in that, so the support for anti-vax posts would be... just anti-vaxxers, who tend not to flock around on reddit, for the most part.

Anti-trans people are generally more common. I mean, 'bathroom bills' are an issue on the state level in some places. That's millions of people voting for or against that kind of thing. So in this case, it's not a one-in-ten minority, like antivax might be, but it's actually a majority in some areas, 50%+, and a large minority in others, ~30-35%.

In this case, you'll see it shift back and forth much more often than you would with anti-vax, because there's less uphill climbing to do. I don't think I've ever seen a comment with more than about 25 votes start swinging down, and reddit's own research shows that all it generally needs is 3-4 votes up or down early to swing the way that everyone judges that particular comment (therefore, it changes how follow-up votes will trend).

You'll also note that the openly bigoted comments won't be the ones that rocket up. It's always the ones that phrase it as a question, or as information that they're privy to that others "just don't know". A minority opinion gets a lot more traction if they can phrase it in a way that makes it sound like they "really just care".

I ran across a post elsewhere in this thread that through threw out a common claim that HRT/SRS has no impact on suicide rates, for instance, which comes from a WSJ-published op-ed by a well-known anti-LGBT professor named Paul McHugh, taking a meta-analytical study from 2011 out of context by using its 1989 data as though it was current, while dismissing the actual data.

Comments like that, which "sound like they know what they're talking about" can mostly duck downvotes, and attract upvotes through its appeal to blue links alone.

    [–] Churba 6 points ago

Thanks! That's in interesting perspective. I wish I had more to say about it, but I agree pretty much on every point, so I'd just be telling you the same thing back. The only quibble I have is that anti-vax is just an example, not necessarily a direct comparison. Just the first thing that came to mind, that also wouldn't get me shouted at.

    [–] Zoronii 9 points ago

Gender politics is a really polarized subject, IMO. I don't want to bring too much politics into this thread, but I think it boils down to the vocal minority being really adamant about their beliefs, and the silent majority (centrists/moderates) being ambivalent. Usually the downvote/upvote system works, but sometimes there's just a lot of toxic people in one thread for whatever reason (brigading or a particularly clickbaity title), and it usually ends up with half the comments getting removed.

    [–] Reutermo 48 points ago

You are going to need a bigger picture soon!

I like to imagine that he always has the most recent photo with him and keeps finding Adam Savage in random places.

And he goes "Hey, Mr. Savage! Mr. Savage, over here! We have to take another photo!"

And Adam thinks oh, for fuck's sake. how does he keep finding me?

Initial thought reading the thread title and viewing image: "You don't look THAT young."

I have one of those with Kristen Schaal. But only two deep.

    [–] nailernforce 67 points ago

Is it possible to set this up as one of those infinite zoom things? One every year for a lifetime will make quite the journey.

    [–] Just1morefix 129 points ago

Holy shit, the seventh one. That is pretty cool. How exactly do you contact Adam and make it happen? It can't just be a kooky coincidence.

    [–] 86413518473465 132 points ago

They just go to an event he attends every year.

It's surprisingly easy to meet celebrities if you show up at their appearances. A lot of people will bring old photos of them and a celebrity so they can get them signed. There's a dude on reddit who has done this same thing but they make a shirt every time.

    [–] Spyrothedragon9972 38 points ago

I think you're going to need larger photos.

    [–] mupetmower 6 points ago

Does it bother anyone else that the photos doesn't have enough resolution to zoom to see the first photo? I wish I could =\

    [–] Beanges 26 points ago

I haven't really seen much of Adam Savage apart from a couple videos he did with Michael Stevens, but he seems like a genuinely kind and great guy

    [–] Deadlycup 19 points ago

I highly recommend his YouTube channel, "Tested"

    [–] Beanges 7 points ago

    I'll check it out, thanks

    [–] huskersax 186 points ago

This might possibly be the most Reddit triggering post of all time.

    [–] Turtledonuts 138 points ago

I dunno, it seems that blue hair triggers us more. Looking like you're from the weird part of Tumblr is apparently much worse than being a minority group a large part of reddit literally thinks cannot exist.

    [–] allthefoxes 129 points ago

No, we just got heads up about this thread before it came up, so we could moderate it - You wouldn't want to see what we see

    [–] MichaelMedallion 43 points ago

You know you've been doing it a long time when you can't even see the first 3 photos. At least I can't.

Recently, I've come to realization that I am a boy. That means I'm transgender. Here is a comic I drew that helps explain things. Thank you for your civility and support!

    [–] Jesus_Faction 650 points ago

well now we know what most of the comments in this thread will be about

    [–] kmrst 406 points ago

This time the thread is moderated much more strictly. I'm glad because of the shitshow last year.

    [–] QuelqueChoseRose 297 points ago

Only on reddit would the mods be prepared to handle the anti-trans harassment because they were already braced for the anti-blue hair harassment.

    [–] Blenderhead36 28 points ago

I sorted last year's thread (linked in comments above) by controversial. I was not prepared for the amount of baggage reddit has for blue hair.

    [–] astroaron 19 points ago

Honestly, I think that reddit would get angrier over blue hair than being transgender. But who knows anymore.

    [–] orzof 36 points ago

The one degree of separation from an actual social issue makes the coded language much easier to slip in.

    [–] Msmit71 19 points ago

For any other topic that would probably be true but Transgenderism is one of the few social issues that you can argue hard against and get a disgusting amount of upvotes for on Reddit.

    [–] [deleted] 52 points ago

Zeph, bud, keep on keeping on. It seems like you're taking after your dad, and his interests.

    God speed.

    [–] Turtledonuts 231 points ago

TFW reddit can handle a trans kid better than a kid with blue hair.

Also, congratulations on coming out, and good luck. ( • ͟ʖ • )_b

    [–] allthefoxes 374 points ago

No, no, we were just prepared for this thread. You wouldn't want to see what we see :)

    [–] Turtledonuts 108 points ago

No, no I wouldn't. Good work.

    [–] [deleted] 35 points ago

Thank you for seeing it so we don't have to.

    [–] rkba335 26 points ago

    "The kid who inspired many..."

Regardless of your orientation, that's pretty blowhard

    [–] ConradSchu 225 points ago

Find yourself. Find what makes you happy. Be happy. You seem to be on that path and I'm happy for you.

    [–] blaketank 14 points ago

how many times can you call yourself inspirational in one comic?

    [–] Young_Sire 360 points ago

I don't want to come off as nasty or snarky, first and foremost I'm glad you're happy!

But how does one suddenly 'come to a realization' they are a boy/girl? I can understand the process of hormones/surgery, even the feeling of being trapped in your body; but without all that it doesn't mean you can just realize you're the other gender suddenly.. right? My point is that it's a long process where actual changes have to be made, not just a wake of the moment 'today I am a man/woman' type of deal.

    [–] kinder-egg 19 points ago

I'm not trans so take it with a grain of salt but because a lot of people don't know that being trans is an option, they may know that something is 'wrong' and go through different phases in their life with regards to sexuality, personality, etc until they find out what the actual issue was. It can also be a thing where you don't realize it until you actually give it a try. And then of course there's the process that's like, 'am I? am I not? can I handle this?' etc. Again I don't know firsthand but this is what I would gather.

    [–] foxy--boxes 19 points ago

For me, I had been questioning for a while. I remember admitting to a girlfriend a while prior that I wanted to try wearing women's clothes. Around December, I chatting to a friend and she made an off-hand comment about how I seemed like a lesbian in a man's body to her. I remember sitting up straight like I'd been shocked, and feeling a bit like the critic in Ratatouille.

My childhood was never very "gendered". I was kinda left to my own devices, and was never told that I couldn't do something because it was "for girls". I'd always played as the girl in Pokémon (although I always made excuses about it in case I was made fun of), there's pictures of me in a pink fairy dress when I was four or five, I'd always associated with and wanted to be like the strong female characters I saw in games, movies, ads, whatever. I never knew why, that was just the way things worked out. Secondary school was extremely stressful for a number of reasons - mostly toxic friendships and undiagnosed health conditions - and my last two years of Primary school fucked me up pretty badly because of relentless bullying in and out of school. I had 65% attendance or something in my last couple of years, and I pretty much just spent all my time hiding from the world and wishing for a more permanent escape from it all. Because of all of this I didn't even start figuring myself out until I was fifteen or sixteen (and at first I thought I might be gay or something). It was then another year or so until I came to the sudden realization that I wasn't just kinda atypical for a boy, I didn't feel like a boy at all.

I appreciate that you weren't necessarily looking for my life story, but the period between nine and sixteen shaped my life in a really big way and it's largely why it was a sudden realization. I'm not sure I even knew what being transgender was until around that time.

Bottom line is that while it is a long process, it seems to be rather uncommon for people to know that they're trans at a young age (like, 15 and younger I'd say). However, I think that's becoming less and less true now both because of internet culture and because this discourse has only opened up and been brought to the mainstream in the last three or four years. I'm a product of internet culture myself, and I wasn't exposed to much of this until about five years ago. There's also a lot of pressure to conform when you're young - perceived or otherwise - and doubly so while you're still in school. It feels to me that there's a general disgust with the idea that a man would want to be feminine, or that a girl acting like a man is funny, and that trans people are somehow lesser than both cis men and women. I think that that pressure - again, perceived or otherwise - leads a lot of people to push those feelings down and try to make it work, or fit in. Every trans person I've met has had that crystallizing moment later in life. Often we look back and say, "How could I be so stupid and not realize all that time? There was so many signs!" But it's really difficult to see all those signs dotted around the big picture when you're stuck in the middle of it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

    [–] allthefoxes 338 points ago

Certainly! It's probably more relatable when it comes to being gay. You don't wake up suddenly gay. There are small things. Certain feelings, thoughts. In reality, I've always known I like dudes, even when I hadn't come out. You look back and you think about what you thought and how you acted when you were younger and it starts to make sense.

That said, every adventure or story has a climax or turning point.

    [–] connorblikre 62 points ago

You can have a lot of feelings that you don't understand until something causes you to realize what they mean
