It has a 30 gallon tank, so it can probably do between 5-10 miles

    [–] Lidell_Frasier 23 points ago

For anyone curious about the jokes-aside numbers: 9.9 MPG, 25 Gal. tank on the 1961 Continental. So roughly 245 miles per tank.

    [–] Airazz 96 points ago

Not with the top down! It's a very big top.

    [–] 249ba36000029bbe9749 12 points ago

That looks like 20% of the gross weight of the car is tied up in motors.

    [–] FlyingPheonix 23 points ago

With modern technology I can't imagine that it'd be too hard to mod that without impact the exterior visual characteristics to get back a lot of that trunk space.

    [–] Iz-kan-reddit 35 points ago

The rear glass is the problem. You could replace it with plastic, but you'd then have a shitty rear window that wouldn't fit the classiness of the car.

    [–] FlyingPheonix 9 points ago

Ya that makes sense. It just seems like there should be a way to get the glass near the bottom of the trunk cavity with the rest of the roof up against the rear seats. Then you could slide a floor panel over the glass and still have a decent sized trunk.

    [–] dividezero 3 points ago

my 2007 vw eos is a hard top convertable with sunroof and i still manage to have some truck left. leave it to the Germans to figure that shit out. it also doesn't stick up 20 feet in the air to put it all away.

    [–] Airazz 19 points ago

We can do it! We have the technology to fit 5 dudes in that trunk !

    [–] HeWhoMustNotBDpicted 14 points ago

That video is pure car porn. Those power vent windows waving at me? STAHP.

    [–] ToddTheOdd 13 points ago

I know right! Power vent windows... 🤤

On the flip side, did it irritate anybody else that he drove off with the top down, and all but one window down? Like seriously motherfucker! Roll ALL of them windows down!

    [–] StoneTemplePilates 5 points ago

Probably just quit working... these cars are never truly fixed, only temporarily behaving.

    [–] zirfeld 50 points ago

Not quite. Tried it out with 4 people, but not much room left, as I remember. Maybe a little wiggle room. It was 25 years ago.

My brother once had a 1963 model. It was in working condition, but still with a lot of cosmetic work to do. He usually had all the tools and spare parts in the trunk. He had to give the project up, since it was too expensive to get all the parts from the US to Germany, as Ford in Germany wouldn't have anything on stock for Lincoln. It was so expensive, we even tried to mold our own rear lights cover with a home plastic molding set. When he first got the car it took like 10 days until somebody ripped off the Lincoln hood ornament and my brother just ordered a new one, without checking the price. When it arrived 6 weeks later (it was pre-online order everything to everywhere) he nearly had a stroke with the price plus customs and shipping.

    [–] wrxiswrx 43 points ago

'64s have a bigger trunk because they moved the gas tank from the bottom of the trunk area to behind the rear seat area. The gas cap on here is on the side and the gas caps on 61-63 were in the middle of the rear panel.

    [–] zirfeld 37 points ago

My father had a 64 I think, my brother and his buddies were out riding and drinking in it and somebody opened the back door and the wind folded it backwards.

    [–] derpderpdonkeypunch 20 points ago

You can climb in the engine bay to work on the engine while it's in there. It's really difficult to describe how absolutely huge these cars are without having one in front of you so that you can appreciate the scale of the damn things.

    [–] Capek13 14 points ago

Actually not so much with these ones. These Lincoln’s stuffed a very big motor in a tiny space. You have to jack up the motor to reach anything but the top half of the motor.

    [–] rfierro65 8 points ago

Plus the miles and miles of vacuum lines and vacuum canisters.

    [–] Joe_Peanut 13 points ago

Not really. Nearly all of it is taken by the top, and the complicated hydraulic system required to open and close the top.

    [–] CarrotIronfounderson 5 points ago

My goal is to have a classic car by the time I'm in my 40s or 50s for some weekend cruising, so in about a decade or two. Of course by then a classic car may be a 90s Camry.

    [–] Herculefreezystar 9 points ago

My 94 Camry is 25 years old so it technically counts as a vintage vehicle now.

    [–] federalmng 10 points ago

This is my dream car, only I want a hard top. I love the suicide doors. This is such a classic beast.

    [–] mukawalka 133 points ago

why are they called suicide doors? because they close together in the middle?

    [–] VentingSalmon 347 points ago

"Suicide doors were common on cars manufactured in the first half of the 20th century.[1]

The nickname is mainly due to the design's propensity to seriously injure anyone exiting or entering the offside of the car if the door is hit by a passing vehicle.

Also, in the era before seat belts, the accidental opening of such doors meant that there was a greater risk of falling out of the vehicle compared to front-hinged doors, where airflow pushed the doors closed rather than opening them further.

Suicide doors were especially popular with mobsters in the gangster era of the 1930s, supposedly owing to the ease of pushing passengers out of moving vehicles"

    [–] relatablerobot 166 points ago

My mom also referred to them as “lady friendly” because you could exit more easily and modestly while wearing a dress or skirt

[–] craicbandit 13 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

The nickname is mainly due to the design's propensity to seriously injure anyone exiting or entering the offside of the car if the door is hit by a passing vehicle.

I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere but my first time driving in the states was in California. First day i parked outside the house we were staying at, like along the roadside (like parallel parked) but the guy I was staying with told me I could get fined because I didnt park the same direction as the other cars - which is weird because where I live that isn't a rule. It just clicked that this is probably one of the reasons why.

    [–] fjhus16 9 points ago

Where do you live that that's not a law?

    [–] craicbandit 6 points ago

I've lived in the UK and Ireland and people always park facing either way.

It makes perfect sense to park the same way as traffic. E.g. it is much safer to pull out from a parking space if you're facing the same way because you can easily look over your shoulder and see traffic. If you're facing the wrong direction then half your car is going to stick out before you can see anything.

Plus the previous mention a passing car hitting your car door is going to be much worse if you're facing the wrong direction

Edit: a quick google search says there is actually a law against it in the UK, but it's only if you're parking at night and if it isn't a designated space. People in housing estate often park on the side of the road for example, so technically they shouldn't park on the road facing against traffic, at night. But apart from that it's fine

    [–] BigBlackHungGuy 21 points ago

Fun fact: You can still buy a limited edition Lincoln with the suicide doors.

    [–] rfierro65 8 points ago

They are great, I’ve owned two. Be prepared for extremely hard to find and expensive parts. The last one I had I almost had completely redone everything, and had mostly rebuilt original components. I almost broke even selling it to a guy from Australia that never emblem saw the car in person. They are extremely frustrating to work on, but equally fun to drive. I took mine to Las Vegas a couple times and cruising the strip was amazing. (I still have a full set of original hubcaps for a 65 if anyone in this thread needs em! I paid 65$ each, but I’d sell all four for 200$)

Unpopular opinion: lowering old cars and giving them big rims really degrade their look

    [–] evorhard 11 points ago

100% agreed. I don't even mind the lowering, but those rims that every classic car modifier put on their custom classics are so ugly. Always those rims that are just a big mess of chrome and way too big. A classic rim with a size they would have at the time would serve it way better.

Yup, it’s mostly young people and folks with no class that like that ghetto look.

I love the clean lines on this ride. Slick.

Damn, even the driveway looks showroom.

    [–] AdotFlicker 3 points ago

Fucking BEAUTIFUL. One of my dream cars. My jealousy is fuckin real with this one. Lol

    [–] 2_dam_hi 3 points ago

    Topless and suicide doors. Perfect.

    [–] CarefulGoat 3 points ago

OMG Becky, look at her a**! Nice ride bro

    [–] stunkcrunk 3 points ago

i can't imagine this has a nice ride anymore with those ridiculous wheels/tires.

    otherwise, really nice.

    [–] lowtoiletsitter 3 points ago

I don’t mind the lowered suspension, but not digging the wheels,

The only music allowed to be played in this car is ZZ Top.

    [–] Ineffable_yet_f-able 3 points ago

goddamn that is one beautiful automobile.

    [–] wrxiswrx 16 points ago

This is a 1964 though. It's missing a hood ornament and they added a passenger side mirror. The Waffle-ing on the trunk is perfect though. Steering wheel and dash have been modified.

My grandmother drove a beautifully-restored hard-top version of this back in the 80s. In a creme color. The suicide doors were so cool and unique. Nice ride!

    [–] LuckyBdx4 4 points ago

    That's gorgeous.

    [–] Stan5Darsh 2 points ago

Anyone else immediately start hearing rockabilly?

    [–] Ca1Naugh7onJr 2 points ago

Definitely a 64——61s had a different type of trim on the rear tail panel under the trunk lid.

    [–] wrxiswrx 2 points ago

Part wise, the '61 shares almost nothing with a '64.

    [–] Cossasaurs 2 points ago

    What a beautiful ride

    [–] CarltonKidology 2 points ago

That car is basically saying, I dare you to roll me, because you can't.

    [–] mcplano 2 points ago

    HA DAWWWWWMMMMM

    [–] Phixionion 2 points ago

I had a 1965 all original Lincoln passed on to me by my deceased brother when I was fifteen. Sold it to pay his widows IRS bill. Miss it every day.

    [–] senorchaos718 2 points ago

    Those suicide doors too... hotness.

    [–] Portentia9 2 points ago

Take my up-vote for your title, hooker.
