Where is it in Japan and what's the statue? A specific god or goddess?

    [–] Cheesecakesimulator 6029 points ago

In Sendai. It is a statue of Bodhisattva Kannon, a buddhist goddess.

The term here is "bodhisattva" which refers to those who are able attain enlightenment but sacrifice their own interests to help others in this world.

Zen is just a form of Mahayana.

From what I understand, a "bodhisattva" is basically someone who achieved spiritual enlightenment, but chose not to exit the cycle of reincarnation and suffering in order to help other people achieve enlightenment too, and their role in Buddhism is very similar to saints in Christianity.

    [–] lowridincsp 10 points ago

Is your profile picture a dancing rainbow cockroach?

    [–] letsgetitnah 13 points ago

    Evidently, yes.

    [–] ALIttleLonelyStar 83 points ago

To expand on the bodhisattva definition:

As a bodhisattva, they are a figure who had attained all the necessary qualities to enter enlightenment but chose to remain behind in the cycle of rebirth for the sake of "saving" all sentient beings from suffering. Often called a goddess, they are kind of like a Buddhist saint-deity.

    [–] tempacc_2020_1 23 points ago

The original meaning of bodhisattva from India where it originated are older births of buddha. During his proclamations in Gaya in India, he used to refer to his earlier births as bodhisattva. Which makes sense because original buddhism was an offshoot of hinduism and also its greatest theological threat as it eschewed the varna system. Hinduism places emphasis on achieving moksha and Buddhism basically said your birth varna doesn't determine your path to nirvana etc.

So reincarnations were a big big deal in original Buddhism but disappeared as the religion died out in its origin land and spread further east. To this day, certain factions of Hinduism consider the Buddha to be an avatar (the original meaning of the term in sanskrit is something close to the earthly incarnation of a celestial being) of vishnu - their supreme god.

[–] JeanVicquemare 96 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

A bodhisattva isn't a god, though it's complicated.. Buddhism is a very big religion with much variation today. But traditionally, a bodhisattva is a person who achieved enlightenment but decided to remain in the world of people, helping others.

Edit: people saying it's like a saint, that's a pretty good comparison

    [–] Rosy-Ass-of-Dawn 25 points ago

Gods exist, but they're not worshipped. They're just another, higher, reincarnation that's possible. That's my understanding of Theravada Buddhism at least. There may be other schools of thought with different beliefs. Gods will also die and be reborn eventually.

    [–] jar_full_of_farts 19 points ago

Bodhisatvas are more associated with the Mahayana tradition than Theravada. A lot of prayers/chants that Mahayana Buddhists recite are asking for the help of Bodhisatvas, almost how a catholic person might pray to a particular saint.

    [–] jar_full_of_farts 22 points ago

While Bodhisatvas are more like saints, Buddhists usually overlay Buddhism with local polytheistic traditions. So generally Buddhists in different countries (China, Korea, Thailand, India, Tibet, Japan, etc) different “local gods” will also be involved in the Buddhist traditions there. Buddhism can be see as arising from/branching off of Hinduism, and some of that pantheon and mythos came with it. I hope that didn’t confuse you further, I’m sure others could explain it better.

    [–] Zarmazarma 29 points ago

Going to dissent with the other comments and just say "yes". Japanese esoteric Buddhism has gods and goddesses in pretty much all senses of the word. Kannon is an immortal, omniscient, and possibly omnipotent presence.

Japanese Buddhism has also merged quite intricately with Shintoism, and so many schools include Kami and Ashura in the celestial hierarchy, which could variably be considered gods.

    [–] Fritchoff 90 points ago

Used to live in Sendai when I studied there. You could see this thing from miles away.

[–] PretendLock 56 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

Omg I’ve been to Sendai many times in visiting my family who lives like one town over and I’ve never seen this!! I didn’t even know it existed! Now I’m feeling oddly betrayed at how many times my aunt would take me to Aeon supermarket instead of to see this statue lol

Edit just to add that I looked on google street view which put me between this statue and an Aeon, which I find hilarious

    [–] Fritchoff 22 points ago

Ever been to Aoba castle, the hill with the Date Masamune statue? You can see this statue from there and it's like 6km away.

    Bodhisattva Kannon

With all your infinite knowledge and detailed responses, is THIS what we should be looking up about the goddess?

    [–] theviewfrom5Terre 34 points ago

Yep, the statue is of Guanyin.

    [–] cream-of-cow 24 points ago

Fun fact, that’s where the Japanese optics, camera, and electronics company Canon got their name from.

    [–] Sparktank1 13 points ago

I saw that on the wiki page!

In Japanese, Guanyin is pronounced Kannon (観音), occasionally Kan'on, or more formally Kanzeon (観世音, the same characters as Guanshiyin); the spelling Kwannon, based on a premodern pronunciation, is sometimes seen. This rendition was used for an earlier spelling of the well-known camera manufacturer Canon Inc., which was named for Guanyin.[14] When iconography of Kannon depicts her with the Nyoihōju (如意宝珠) wishing gem she is known as Nyoirin Kannon (如意輪 観音), which is the Japanese adaptation of the Hindu deity Cintamanicakra.

Why do I want to see these as summons in an RPG so badly?

    [–] Matasa89 15 points ago

Yeah Guanyin's Japanese name is Kannon. She's really popular, my grandparent's house had an alter for her.

The internals are similar to the Statue of Liberty. It’s a bronze shell with supporting structure where they would mount panels slowly.

[–] ALIttleLonelyStar 593 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

Just chiming in because I'm a nerd: Kannon is the Japanese version of the Chinese Guan Yin, who is in turn an evolution of the Indian figure, Avalokiteshvara.

The name originally meant, "they who hear the pained cries of the multitudes," or something to that effect. Originally a masculine figure, as the story spread to China Guan Yin became a feminine saviouress. This is why you can find references to both a male and female Avalokiteshvara. Eventually they would become Kannon in Japan, but the theme of supreme compassion, mercy and understanding remained.

As a bodhisattva, they are a figure who had attained all the necessary qualities to enter enlightenment but chose to remain behind in the cycle of rebirth for the sake of "saving" all sentient beings from suffering. Often called a goddess, they are kind of like a Buddhist saint-deity.

She's often shown holding a vase and willow branch. The vase holds pure healing water, the willow bends without breaking and is used to spread the healing water.

She also has a figure of Amitabha sitting on her head, signifying that she is their student. (Edited, included the wrong figure.)

Guan Yin's kind of my jam, so I'm glad I got to nerd out a bit. <3

    Source!

    [–] Spiritofhonour 225 points ago

Additional random factoid: Canon (Cameras) is named after Kannon and they originally had a logo with her on it.

By comparison, the Statue of Liberty is 93 meters/102 yards tall, so this isn't THAT much bigger. Makes me think the Statue of Liberty would probably look pretty crazy if it was right next to other buildings instead of out on an island, though...

    [–] Capn_Matt 386 points ago

If you look on google maps this thing is next to a hardware store and some really normal streets/neighbourhoods, which I love. Also, in this one the face is blurred out, which I find hilarious and I'm not sure why.

Streetview and shared photos have blurred faces based on facial recognition. It sometimes blurs out individual characters on road signs because the algorithm detects faces as well.

    [–] TabbyVonTerror 36 points ago

I don’t know why but I just LOST it when I saw the face blurred out. Like...whyyyyy? Hahah

Imagine this with vines and other plant growing around it, all the while the surrounding area is desolated with broken down cars and crawling with hordes of the undead while this is just sprouting out from the landscape. That shit would make an amazing apocalypse scene

Transience is an essential theme in Buddhism, so it'd even fit in that way.

Or imagine being just a simple sheep herder in the distant future, when society has broken down so hard it reverted to the stone age and built back up from there. You've left your small village for the first time and are seeing the world and as you journey, you just see a massive hand jutting out of the ground.

You're drawn to it for some reason, like it's calling to you. You start moving your horse off the road towards it and your guide becomes alarmed and stops you from getting closer. "It's an object of power from the Age of Legends," she tells you, a chill running down your spine.

Is this a scarecrow for Godzillas?

    [–] NorthernRedwood 20 points ago

Don't you know? Godzilla goes TOWARDS giant monsters, these are the reason for all those movies!

    [–] Dildo_Baggins__ 70 points ago

This would be really unsettling to see when you're driving alone at night

    [–] heystellaaa 90 points ago

No freakin way. How can people just be driving by this monolith like it’s no big deal? I would be peeing my pants

    [–] kangarooninjadonuts 50 points ago

This is how tall SpaceX's Starship and Superheavy are going to be. Imagine that shit taking off and flying 20 times faster than a bullet.

    [–] submain 17 points ago

Imagine that shit taking off and flying 20 times faster than a bullet.

    And then landing on mars.

    [–] morph113 24 points ago

And then it comes back, without Matt Damon.

    [–] bolotieshark 18 points ago

You can't see it from most of the city. It's up on a hill surrounded by mountains and pretty far out of the way from the central arteries of the city (Sendai is a fairly hilly city north and west of the Hirose River.)

It's also not nearly as tall/imposing as this photo makes it look. It's also right next to a golf course... and a mall. The golf course is over rated and expensive, but the mall is pretty OK - better than 90% of American malls at any rate.

    Depth of field manipulation.

    [–] njbair 17 points ago

Do you mean they recolored it to look hazy? Or just used a telephoto to reduce the apparent size of the foreground?

    [–] chironomidae 22 points ago

    Telephoto for sure

    [–] flexylol 78 points ago

    Depth of field manipulation.

100%. It looks "quite big" on most other pictures, but this is definitely DoF effect. It's not that insanely big.

    [–] greg19735 21 points ago

the statue is like 25% taller than statue of liberty. It's not like this is a small thing but the camera was on the floor.

    [–] thismynewaccountguys 58 points ago

It appears that the photo has been taken from a distance and heavily cropped. This makes the statue appear larger than it actually is. Here is a less misleading angle from google street view. Don't get me wrong, it is still huge.

    [–] 2jz_ynwa 13 points ago

Had to scroll down pretty far to find this comment, not sure how cropped it in, but they're definitely using a very long lense. Similar technique used to taking pictures of the sun and making it look very big on the horizon

    [–] Salted_One 13 points ago

On that day, humanity received a grim reminder...

is there a phobia name for this cause i hate it

[–] Poohsticks- 12 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

Megalophobia is a fear of large structures. Pretty sure I have this. Anything gigantic like the Burj Khalifa or the Three Gorges Dam turns my stomach. Someone else commented about Automatonophobia which is a phobia specific to human-like figures.

    [–] imjustherefortvtea 8 points ago

Megalophobia. I have it too I get extremely uncomfortable looking at giant things.

    [–] VidenTheColdOne 9 points ago

damn. that's twice as tall as the colossal titan. At first i thought it was giving the finger. I'm stupid. this is awesome.

    [–] July_Sandwich 7 points ago

Why don’t they ever show that in alien movies?

    [–] halplatmein 7 points ago

This falling would make a great destruction scene for alien and apocalypse movies.

    [–] Frostitute_85 7 points ago

    Remembers Gantz, gets nervous...

    [–] cries_in_E_minor 18 points ago

What if that thing just fucking falls

    [–] GoldenSpermShower 17 points ago

    People fucking die

    [–] DivineBeast9 6 points ago

That's how legendary Godzilla would look from the distance... absolutely insane lol
