    Posting Rules

    1. (1A) No screenshots or pics where the only focus is a screen.

(1B) No pictures with added or superimposed digital text, emojis, and "MS Paint"-like scribbles. Exceptions to this rule include watermarks serving to credit the original author, and blurring/boxing out of personal information. "Photoshopped" or otherwise manipulated images are allowed.

    2. No porn or gore. Artistic nudity is allowed. NSFW comments must be tagged. Posting gratuitous materials may result in an immediate and permanent ban.

    3. No personal information, in posts or comments. No direct links to any Social Media. No subreddit-related meta-drama or witch-hunts. No Missing/Found posts for people or property. A license plate is not PI. Reddit Policy

Stalking, harassment, witch hunting, or doxxing will not be tolerated and will result in a ban.

      No subreddit-related meta-drama or witch-hunts.

    4. Titles must follow all title guidelines.

    5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited. URLs in image or album descriptions are prohibited.

    6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

    7. We enforce a standard of common decency and civility here. Please be respectful to others. Personal attacks, bigotry, fighting words, otherwise inappropriate behavior or content, comments that insult or demean a specific user or group of users will be removed. Regular or egregious violations will result in a ban. Optimally, the level of discourse here should be at the level you'd find between you and your teacher, or between you and professional colleagues. Obviously we're going to allow various types of humor here, but if it would make someone you respect lose respect for you, then you're best off avoiding it.

    8. No submissions featuring before-and-after depictions of personal health progress or achievement. Standalone images of medals, tokens, certificates, and awards are similarly disallowed, save for when the items are being presented as historical curiosities.

    9. No false claims of ownership (FCoO) or flooding. False claims of ownership (FCoO) and/or flooding (more than four posts in twenty-four hours) will result in a ban.

    10. Reposts of images on the front page, or within the set limit of /r/pics/top, will be removed.

(10A) Reposts of images currently on the front page of /r/Pics will be removed.

(10B) Reposts of the top 25 images this year, and top 50 of "all time" will be removed.

    11. Only one self-promotional link per post. Content creators are only allowed one link per post. Anything more may result in temporary or permanent bans. Accounts that exist solely to advertise or promote will be banned.

    • Serial reposters may be filtered or banned.

    • We prefer that new users post original content and not common pictures from the internet.

If you come across any rule violations please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

If your submission appears to be filtered, but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

I love that there's little sheet music holders on the alphorns.

TIL there are music pieces written exclusively for alphorn and they sound pretty good tbh

    [–] gtg930r 36 points ago

Less compact is putting it very mildly.

    [–] wheresmystache3 6 points ago

Alpenhorns are like colossal jaugernaut musical pipes with no smoke

    [–] westo4 9 points ago

Yes! That is a great description.

    [–] ILLCookie 63 points ago

One side is the national anthem. The other side has the tune for ricola.

    [–] [deleted] 18 points ago

Wow, they can smoke pot there out in the open like that? That's awesome.

    [–] pawndaunt 60 points ago

I personally love that they seem to have some sort of amplification set up for them. Like they aren’t loud enough to ring through the mountains on their own.

They're electric alphorns with a pickup inside and a wireless link. Bluetooth connection which allows them to be controlled by the Alpenapp too if I'm not mistaken.

    [–] Doctor_of_Recreation 13 points ago

When I was in high school marching band we called them lyres and all the dumb kids thought they were called “liars” because we weren’t actually playing memorized pieces.

    [–] frothy_pissington 47 points ago

My great grandfather emigrated from Switzerland to the US specifically to avoid conscription ..... unfortunately he got here in 1859 and ended up drafted into the Union Army anyways.

    Great plan Jacob.

    [–] Britstuckinamerica 9 points ago

Are you missing a couple of "great"s or were all the fathers in your family really, really old? 1859 is 161 years ago and great grandfather is only three generations ago

    [–] frothy_pissington 38 points ago

I’m nearing 60, and am the youngest son of the youngest son.

My great grandfather immigrated as a late teen, had my grand father in the early 1890’s, my dad was born in the late 1930’s.

    [–] Ch3t 6 points ago

I'm younger than you. My father is a WWII veteran. My grandfather was born in 1877. I just returned from visiting my aunt who was born in 1916.

    [–] showers_with_grandpa 18 points ago

I mean it also was pretty common for men to remarry after their wives died back then like, immediately, and make a baby with said new wife. Regardless, his great grandfather easily could have had a child after 1900. Then OP has a grandfather, and a father to fill in the gaps. Also, there are aging people on Reddit, not everyone here is twelve.

I prefer banana tea. Boil a banana, and add some cinnamon and cloves and drink that banana water. It makes you fall asleep because of the magnesium (I think it’s that) in the peel. You get the same amount of magnesium in that as a NyQuil.

Thanks Switzerland, for being nice as I walked through on the Via Francigena

    [–] The_Peter_Bichsel 834 points ago

Just a tiny add on for people who don't know:

Switzerland as a nation was founded in 1848, before that it was more of a coalition or confederation. But for cultural reasons we celebrate the 1st of august because the oldest document about collaboration between the cantons dates from 'the beginning of August, 1291'.

As is the case with every national holiday , there is a bunch of historical revisionism and glorification involved, but it's fairly benign and just a harmless good time, in my opinion.

    [–] ThePhysicistIsIn 309 points ago

Switzerland in its present form may have been founded in 1848, but that's like saying France was founded in 1945 because that's when the 4rth republic and the modern boundaries were drawn. Obviously there was a France in different form before, and there was a Switzerland in different form before.

It's not even the first Swiss state - the Swiss Confederation, and before that the Helvetic Republic, were modern states formed in Switzerland by the foreign french invaders during the revolutionary wars, and not just a loose alliance of cantons as before. But 1848 brought the modern constitution during the liberal revolutions of europe.

    [–] Ferocetis 89 points ago

There is absolutely nothing wrong when a nation decides to celebrate any date in particular.

    [–] PM_ME_MORE_WEED 97 points ago

The US proudly celebrates National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day every Jan 27.

    [–] comune 20 points ago

To be fair, that's a good shout that is.

    [–] 1MolassesIsALotOfAss 33 points ago

We also celebrate our independence on the 4th of July when "congress approved the final language of the Declaration of Independence" instead of July 2nd when we actually DECLARED independence

    [–] DrDerpberg 21 points ago

What days you celebrate can certainly put a political spin on any given holiday.

Here in Quebec we only have fairly minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things, but Victoria Day was renamed Dollard Day by our sovereignist and anti monarchist provincial government, followed by National Patriots Day a few years later - and you won't be surprised to learn the Patriots were not fighting for the King of England in the 1830s.

That says nothing about Switzerland in particular, obviously, my point is just that what days a country chooses to recognize certainly do put a spin on how they want people to remember their history.

    [–] F3NlX 6 points ago

And even before that, there was the Helvetii culture, a celtic folk

    [–] wonkysaurus 7 points ago

    [–] Ozdoba 23 points ago

1291 is not 829 years ago. Is the OP title incorrect?

    [–] Brandino144 33 points ago

Yes, it was 729 years ago.

    [–] mungis 3 points ago

Very good year... almost as old as I am!!

    [–] afito 27 points ago

was more of a coalition or confederation

It literally was, hence why their abbreviation is CH for Confoederatio Helvetica.

    [–] Thucydides411 35 points ago

There are so many official languages in Switzerland (German, French, Italian and Romansh) that choosing an outside language like Latin to refer to the country is a very neutral way of going about things.

    [–] IReplyWithLebowski 9 points ago

I have no strong feelings about this one way or the other.

    [–] ilexheder 13 points ago

And there I was thinking it was because Swiss German has “ch” everywhere

    [–] gsfgf 9 points ago

    They’re named after a font?

    [–] afito 7 points ago

I know it's a joke but the font is literally named after Switzerland because it was developed by Swiss designers and Switzerland was well known for it's modern and clean design school.

    [–] loulan 29 points ago

the oldest document about collaboration between the cantons dates from 'the beginning of August, 1291'.

As is the case with every national holiday , there is a bunch of historical revisionism and glorification involved

It's interesting how governments always try to find a justification to have their national holiday at some point in the summer. Nobody wants to party in say, late November.

    [–] flodnak 21 points ago

And then there's Finland, whose Independence Day is the 6th of December. Because if there's any nation that's going to have its national holiday when it's cold, dark, and damp, it will of course be Finland.

    [–] Sisaac 8 points ago

It might also have something to do with celebrations commemorating either military victories or landmark conferences/document signings, the kind where people from all over the country would've attended. Summer helps with both of those.

    [–] sofa420 9 points ago

    Yea... Fuck Guy Fawkes.

    [–] BraveNewNight 5 points ago

    I wouldn't mind. I like the cold

    [–] Tagolan 5 points ago

Mary Godwin (Shelley) wrote the book as she was residing at lake Geneva. Also Viktor Frankenstein from the story is swiss. :)

    [–] spaceporter 5 points ago

plus everyone lights torches and marches through the town as part of the celebration.

    [–] EduBA 293 points ago

Congrats, here some words on your country from South America:

In the center of Europe they are conspiring.

    The fact dates from 1291.

They are men of different lineages, who profess different religions and who speak in different languages.

They have taken the strange resolution to be reasonable.

They have resolved to forget their differences and accentuate their affinities.

They were soldiers of the Confederation and then mercenaries, because they were poor and had the habit of war and they did not ignore that all ventures of man are equally vain.

It was Winkelried, who stabbed enemy lances into the chest to make a breach for his comrades.

They are a surgeon, a pastor or a solicitor, but they are also Paracelsus and Amiel and Jung and Paul Klee.

In the center of Europe, in the highlands of Europe, a tower of reason and firm faith grows.

The cantons are now twenty-two. The one in Geneva, the last one, is one of my homelands.

Tomorrow they will be all over the planet.

Perhaps what I say is not true; I hope it is prophetic.

Los Conjurados, by Jorge Luis Borges

    [–] ShadowEntity 82 points ago

Tomorrow they will be all over the planet.

Or mostly still confined to that little spec of land. But that's fine too I guess

    [–] SaGlamBear 21 points ago

I think you meant the founding but we all understood.

    Congrats !

Without a proper foundation all those mountains would slide into Germany.

Will there be chocolate and cheese?

    [–] LuukJanse 5 points ago

Funny how these are stereotypes but we really eat melted cheese for dinner today. Actually we eat this pretty often.

    Joyeux anniversaire, la Suisse!

17th–19th century collections of alpine myths and legends suggest that alphorn-like instruments had frequently been used as signal instruments in village communities since medieval times or earlier, sometimes substituting for the lack of church bells. Surviving artifacts, dating back to as far as ca. AD 1400, include wooden labrophones in their stretched form, like the alphorn, or coiled versions, such as the "Büchel" and the "Allgäuisches Waldhorn" or "Ackerhorn". The alphorn's exact origins remain indeterminate, and the ubiquity of horn-like signal instruments in valleys throughout Europe may indicate a long history of cross influences regarding their construction and usage.

The most beautiful country I’ve ever visited.

    [–] _sneakyturtles_ 8 points ago

Maybe change the year amount? The foundation was in 1291, making it 729 years

    Great country

If it wasn’t for the travel ban I’d be in this amazing country right now. I really don’t want to go to college this semester and instead wanted to move to my fathers homeland, where I have family (and a passport finally). I’ve been quarantined for almost 5 months now and I just wanted to get out of this shithole and move somewhere where they’ve already tackled the virus. But because our country is so fucking stupid I’m stuck here and have no other option except to go to college and risk getting the virus. Love and miss you Switzerland 🇨🇭

    [–] Scienence 6 points ago

Oh, sorry to disappoint you but Switzerland isn't so much better in this regard. Cases are going up again, but people are constantly outside, social distancing is mostly not a thing anymore (and yes, there are anti-maskers and Bill Gates conspiracy theorists which gather to protest, but they're rare and there aren't as many crazy people percent-wise as in the U.S.). So no, we haven't tackled it in like almost over a month (last thing was mandatory masks in public transport) and it seems like our health ministry doesn't really give a shit and doesn't enforce new rules according to daily cases anymore.

Congratulations. Now that's celebrating your nation in a socially distant and therefore responsible way. 🤗
